    I just quit smoking cigarettes and can hardly sleep. It's knocked me out. I already have chronic illness, this was the worst ever. I almost went to the ER. I am so thankful to this video for informing me on valerian root. This should save me SOOOOO much money. I know if I can fix my sleep, I'll heal. I already fixed my diet, fruits and veg only now, all I need is good sleep. God bless you, thank you!!

    I bought valerian seeds from you a few years ago, and had no luck growing it the first year. This year, I started them indoors and planted it out in a pot. Yay! It's growing, though it's still small. I hope it comes back bigger and stronger next year so that I can use it. Valerian works great for me when I'm not sleeping well.

    was hesitant to try this root powder. It smells a bit different but I have trouble staying asleep and thought why not. Instructions read one tbsp, a cup of boiling water steep 5-10min, not sure if it would be bitter so added a small squeeze of lemon juice and a few drops of honey. Tastes like how how it smells, not bad. In about 30ish minutes i could feel my muscles getting "loose" and my eyelids getting heavy. I had a great nights sleep, best in a while. Plus for the first in forever time I had dreams. When I woke up I was a bit groggy (probably because I'm not used to good sleep) so i thought well... 5 more minutes, I went to sleep very easly and had another dream! It was great:) I feel super recharged. It worked for me and I'm really happy to have tried this.

    i bought 2 supplements and some valerian root tea, trying to find something my son would take. He said the stuff I bought from Walgreens smelled like feet. Can't really argue with him on that!
    i think i need to get me some valerian seeds. We have clay rich soil but we're in zone 8, and if we amend the soil with coarse sand and fluff it up a bit, most plants tend to do pretty good.
    Thank you for the info! God IS good, all the time!!!

    Arrggggh!! So aggravated that mine ended up being some kind of fancy celery. Next year!
    I do order the dried root and make tincture with vodka. It does really work well and you dont need much. I will usually fix myself up a blend of valerian and holy basil or catnip, lemonbalm, passionflower and put it in a dark dropper bottle to keep on my bedside table. A couple droppers full in a glass of water or sleepytime tea and goodnight! But if used just a few drops it's very helpful for my anxiety during the day. And I do totally agree that it needs to be used with caution and breaks.

    I love this plant. Thank you for some new ideas for how to use it. I am definitely gonna try valerian and lemon balm tea. Using it for animals I know that for cats valerians taste and smell works like a drug. They start behaving really weird like a bit drunk. I am not sure is it good for them. I have a small garden at the edge of a town and valerian grows naturally in this area. In nature valerian prefers to grow in damper and maybe cooler areas. It has a warming and a bit drying effect it brings to it's surroundings. About the difference in the size of the plants you mentioned. I had 2 plants that were approx 2-3 feet for some years. After I replanted them to a different location and added some compost to the soil they grew really big approx 6-7 feet.

    • @RainCountryHomestead
      @RainCountryHomestead  Рік тому

      The smaller plant is growing right next to others that get 6-8 feet tall so I doubt it is the soil, I think it is just a different variety as the flowers are only white with none of the pink in them that my others have

    I've been taking Valerian root capsules for a few years for the occasional headache. I have seeds to grow my own plants but haven't gotten them planted, hopefully this coming year I can find a good place for them to grow. I just recently found out that you can give them to cats. I have a male cat that likes to pee on random things and also attacks one of my other cats for no reason. I opened a capsule and poured a little out into his food bowl. He licked the bowl clean and is no longer peeing on things and not attacking the other cat. One of my other cats just smelled the Valerian root and tried three times to attack the cat the male cat was attacking so it has the opposite effect on her without ingesting it. I was not aware of some of the other things you mentioned so I need to get that information saved. Thank you for sharing this.

    Very good information! I'm going to try and grow it next year. Especially since you can use the flowers and leaves too and don't have to only use the root. I have used valerian tea for years to help with sleep occasionally, but I didn't realize it could be a muscle relaxant. I'm one of those people who deal with chronic pain from arthritis in my back and knees and have a lot of inflammation from that. I do know you can't take valerian every day so do you have any recommendations for herbs you can use on a daily basis to help with arthritis and inflammation? Turmeric seems to bother my stomach so looking for something else. Thanks!

    • @RainCountryHomestead
      @RainCountryHomestead  5 років тому +3

      Catnip is another good one to use that helps with pain through its sedative properties and feverfew works well for most for pain and inflammation. I believe either of these (I often taken them together) are safe to use daily but you can even mix it up, valerian for a few days, and the catnip and/or feverew for a few days. Also consider adding more ceylone cinnamon in the form of capsules or in your tea. I love cinnamon so I use it often in teas. Ginger is another that some find helpful for pain and inflammation.

      I had tried growing it a few years ago and none of it survived. I plan to try again. I do not have a video specific to licorice but to use the root from time to time in tea and in my deep sleep tincture:
      *NOTE- if you make it a true tincture with vodka or other such alcohol, it is reommended you take only up to a teaspoon. NOT a shot - I think that is what I said in this video but I only take full shots when it is made as an extract with vinegar and a little less than that when made with wine:

I didn't know it was good for sleep though, may order some root just to use once in a while for that. Love all the great info you put into your video's Heidi, really great! :)

    I wish I had heard this in the spring, I scarified the licorice but not the Valerian, and needless to say the licorice is popping and the Valerian has not germinated. I wish I had a picture to see what it looks like as it comes up so I don't weed it by accident. Also how is your big one doing after being harvested by Mr Rain with his wooden scythe from the roof.

    How many years should one wait to harvest the root? And which part is best for a salve? My husband cuts his fingers a lot at work.

    • @RainCountryHomestead
      @RainCountryHomestead  3 роки тому

      When it comes to herbs for their roots, it is best to wait three years.
      There are many great herbs for salve such as calendula, dandelion flower, plantain leaf, yarrow, and comfrey to name a few. Here is a healing salve recipe I make that works very well for us, it is actually in two parts, the first part is making the herb infused oil, the second is the salve itself:

      Catnip or catmint are excellent choices. I use them in tea when I get stressed and it works great for me but what works for one may not work as well for another. Also, if the valerian root is too strong and that is why you cannot take it, you can try the leaves and/or flowers, better flavor, not as potent but still very calming
