How to Blackout Your Headlight Housing

  • In this video, I show you how to paint your headlight housing. On the VW, it comes stock chrome, and I want to black it out to give it a bit more contrast.
    So if you have a set of reflector bowls that are chrome, you should leave them chrome so you don’t distort your light output. The only time you can paint them is if you are doing a headlight retrofit and you are installing a projector lens in that bowl, similar to the lens I have on my Accord.
    It isn’t a bad idea to look into an additional set of headlights to do this procedure to, so that if you damage your headlights for whatever reason, your daily driver is not out of commission. You can usually find a set at your local scrap yard, eBay, or even amazon for pretty cheap.
    If you have any questions regarding the video, you know where to throw them!! Thanks for watching :)

    I'm not even joking when i say this but the oven partially melted the inside of my corner/turning headlamps and warped the inside of them and i wasn't even able to get it apart. On top of that once it cooled the hole where my turning light goes into was not too small to even fit the light through it....so now i have to buy new corner/turning headlamps.

    • @nonsenseverses6033

      Mike Redding It’d take a heck of a long time. If you have a Harbor Freight in or near your town you can pick up a heat gun for about $8 with coupon. Otherwise, you could definitely order one online. I’d HIGHLY recommend you either pick up a heat gun or just use the oven.

    220 deg for 8-10 mins... Do not do 250... also make sure that you put the light on a piece of wood... any metal will cause hot spots and melt plastic... (I have done this to many head lights also 3 different VW GTI’s which have the same head lights... also if any one has any questions I have pictures of the light I did and can give you step by step Correctly... do NOT touch any of the reflective bowls or you will always regret it..

  • @markakamjg
    @markakamjg 4 роки тому

    Also it’s not A chrome plastic coating it’s actually aluminum that is on there yes in a very thin coating but wearing it off is not what you’re concerned about the concern is any fingerprints or anything will cause scratches that will always be visible and will be magnified when light hits them... when it comes to opening lights check out Chris’s Chanel from “FlyRyde he is by far the best for this kind of thing... for golf got lights I have pictures and am happy to help

    I don't think the LED inside headlight will last long. The heat from Halogen bulb would eventually kill them.

    • @milanmastracci
      @milanmastracci  7 років тому +2

      Halogens aren't the biggest problem. Halogen bulbs won't generate enough heat to kill surrounding LED's. On the other hand, HID's generate a lot more heat, which could definitely kill LED's.

    • @PrasadGavhane
      @PrasadGavhane 7 років тому +1

      I had LEDs inside my bikes headlight which has 35W halogens and the distance from halogen to LED was more than 15cm but still some leds on the bulb burned out and all the burned out leds are facing the halogen side. The problem was that the heat is trapped inside headlight housing and the inside temperature increases which eventually kills LEDs. Anyway, that was my experience. Do let us know how long those LEDs last for you :-)
