- The Shinjuku Eisa Festival is a free, annual event in Tokyo that celebrates Okinawan culture through the traditional Eisa dance:
What it is: The festival features Eisa dancers, traditional music and costumes, and taiko drums. Eisa is a traditional dance from Okinawa that originated as a way to honor ancestors and pray for the well-being of families.
Where it is: The festival takes place around Shinjuku Station, with performances near the east exit during the day and near Yodobashi Camera, Odakyu Halc, and the Shinjuku Mitsui building in the evening.
When it is: The festival is held in late July.
What to expect: The festival attracts a large crowd, with previous years seeing over a million spectators. It's recommended to bring sunscreen and a handheld fan.
How to learn more: Check the event website for schedules.
The Eisa dance is thought to have evolved from nembutsu odori, a Buddhist folk dance that was performed to pacify the spirits of the deceased.

I remember when I was a little girl,
I would actually wait until there was an opening and the drummers had moved on to dance in the middle. I loved the Eisa parades that we went to when I lived there for three years.
The Eisa Parades and the Nago Pineapple farms were true gems in Okinawa.
