    This device works with your router's adapter of any voltage ranging from 5v to 15v. This device uses router's adaptor to charge the ups battery and power the router simultaneously. When electricity is not there, it uses battery to power the router. However, if you want to purchase a ready-made device contact starwatt.in or WhatsApp them @ +91-8971090763, Check their complete product list at instagram @starwatt.in

    I built my wifi router UPS following your instruction yesterday. Please accept my sincere thanks. The component description list in your video was very helpful and I got all the component online. As of now, it's working amazingly and working seamless with my jiofi router ( 12 V 2 A). I used my old Kent SMPS for the body with green led switch light and is looking complete product. Keep doing such DIY's and all the best wishes.

My question is I already have 12V rated powerbank and I want to make use of it as a UPS, I did a direct connection to router and it works, Now I want to turn on powerbank supply only when power goes off. Can u pls suggest a solution with a Relay switch ? (Assuming powerbank doesn't have pass thru feature) Thanks bro! I appreciate the quality of thr content. Those who are reading this comments, Got inspired by this video I bought all the components as mentioned in the video, I'm a novice in this area so had multiple failed attempts and mostly it was the tp5100 which will fail on me, what I learnt is when soldering the parts with tp5100 I was either burning something due to overheat from iron or some kind of short circuit, I lost around 3 tp5100 and 1 dc booster, i didn't make the battery pack bought a pack as is with BMS on which it was written no additional module required and can be directly connect to charger, so I skipped the tp5100 and have directly connected 9 volt charger to the battery pack and from that to the booster to boost to 12 volts and in booster out Schottky diode as in description then to router, this has been working for a week now and when power goes off the router works, but not sure if continuous charging going to cause damage to the battery, but considering the bms is the pack has overcharge protection hoping might help, but that is just my assumption. Posting this because I read many comments who have problem with the tp5100 not working or over heating or no proper output current, this all related to the module and also I could see many complaint on tp5100 online. Hope this helps someone 🙂

    • @TheSmarterThings
      @TheSmarterThings  3 роки тому

      If you are not using the tp5100 or any specific battery charger, there is a high chance of battery to burst due to over charging. BMS will never protect you form over charging.

    Hi Anish,
    Firstly Thank you for putting up simple DIY UPS with minimal components and detailed explanation. I have made the first UPS module using XL6009 converter & TP4056 charging module for my router with 12v & .5ma rating. I have used 2 batteries in parallel for better backup & power.
    However UPS v1 is relatively unstable and either doesn’t start/backup the router or restarts frequently. While heating up XL6009 & TP4056 while
    charging and off charging, Hence I had to drop off this UPS and was waiting for your new UPS 2 version.
    While looking up for similar UPS modules, came across xl4015 converter, can we replace this with the xl6009 in the version 2 UPS? Does the UPS
    v2 address the heating issues? Your view please.
    Thanks in advance, await for your response looking forward for v2 UPS build.

    • @TheSmarterThings
      @TheSmarterThings  4 роки тому

      Hello, Thank you for your feedback. You cannot replace xl6009 with Xl4015 as it is a buck converter not the boost converter. However, if you still want to go for better alternative to xl6009, please go for XL6019 booster converter. it is a new modules have greater output current and better stability. However it will be costly and you must use heat sink with that module as it is a high power module. You can find it here - www.amazon.in/dp/B0796817R6/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_9lTgFbDN0GN83
      In in this version, the heating issues are addressed by increasing the input voltage and providing a heatsink on top of IC. I have tested it for keep it running for 5 days with multiple mannual power cuts to this device and it is much stable than the previous one.

    Thanks for the video, today I finally got it connected and it worked fine, many thanks to you.
    But I have a concern when the battery is on the tp5100 shows purple color, where as when I switch off the battery it turns blue, guess it means battery charged.
    Hope connecting both power (input and after buck boost) via diode will not affect the parts?
    Or is it any specific voltage I have to set when using buck boost, which I guess shud be lower than the adapter voltage?
    Not sure so need your suggestions on this, hope tp5100 does not get affected.
    Thanks

    आपका वीडियो बहुत ज्ञानवर्धक होता है। कृपया अपने वीडियो में प्रोजेक्ट की अनुमानित लागत भी बताया करें।
    मैं चाहता हूं कि आप एक ऐसा 100 वाट के आस पास वाला ups या इन्वर्टर भी बनाना बताए जिसमे हम बिना wifi अडॉप्टर से इनपुट दिए मिलने वाली ac आउटपुट में ही wifi का अडॉप्टर लगाया जा सके इससे फायदा ये होगा कि अडॉप्टर के आउटपुट वोल्ट को एडजस्ट नही करना पड़ेगा और एक से ज्यादा wifi या अडॉप्टर, कैमरा इत्यादि लगा सकेंगे। पर वो छोटी बैटरी से चले, कम साइज में रहे। रेडीमेड ups में समस्या ये है कि वो 500 va से कम का नही होता और 20 मिनेट बैकअप ही देगा। इसलिए आप कम वाट बताएं ताकि कम वाट और छोटी बैटरी में ज्यादा देर बैकअप मिल जाएगा।

    Few queries
    1. What if lights never go off for 15 days, will there be any issues with batteries which will keep charging for 15 days without discharge?
    2. I have two routers, 1 is rated 12V 1.5A and the other is 9V 0.6A ... Will this router work for these?
    3. Can we use Lithium Polymer 18650 batteries?

    • @TheSmarterThings
      @TheSmarterThings  4 роки тому +1

      1: We are not constantly pushing the power to the battery as the BMS and TP5100 are acting as protective elements here. Tp5100 provides us safe charging and Overcharge protection. However, BMS provides overcharge, over-discharge and short circuit protection.
      2. YES, You have to make two no. of such device, one will be boosting voltage to 12v and other will be boosting voltage to 9v. I have this device in stock. If you need it Let me know on instagram -@thingsacademy and I'll ship it to your location in 1 day.
      3. You can, but you should not. 18650 cells are purely made for high energy density applications and have better stability on the high discharge current. This is the reason we use such cells in all-electric vehicles and polymer batteries in cell phone like devices only.

    Thanks for the wonderful video. I think you already said that you will be creating video for two routers using a single UPS. I would be interested in this because i have an airtel connection. It has one modem to which the optical cable is connected as input (from alcatel which is 12v 1.5 ampere) , this modem has connection going out to router and one to telephone , the router is dlink router (12v with 0.5 ampere). So a UPS with two output one for modem and one for router will be very helpful (Since you said you will be already making it it will be helpful). It would also be helpful if you can provide suggestions to lower cost on batteries and circuits as in my case i just need a backup for one min only as my apartment has generator backup which kicks in one min after power goes off. Also is it possible to boost voltage of single 3.7v lithium ion battery to 12v to charge router and modem in case if i require i t for just one min ?.. It would be helpful if you can discuss such option in your video which will help us to reduce the cost further. Also see if you can make ups in such a way that we can access the lithium ion battery with a small panel and just replace the batteries as we do in wall clock, you would need a battery holder similar to that is found in www.amazon.in/Electronicspices-18650-Battery-Holder-Leads/dp/B0863TC797/ref=asc_df_B0863TC797/?tag=googleshopdes-21&linkCode=df0&hvadid=396987099045&hvpos=&hvnetw=g&hvrand=16996308559751718721&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=&hvdev=c&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=1007768&hvtargid=pla-913540267139&psc=1&ext_vrnc=hi

      hello, the video will take time due to some technical issues. But looking at your use-case, I can offer you a device at a reasonable price which will do the JOB. Also using battery battery holders are not recommended for battery pack applications as putting a low-quality battery with two high-quality ones will degrade the battery life of two good quality battery. Hence, I will never recommend to go by that approach. You should never mix the batteries which are not identical. In worst cases, the battery may also blow up .

    Everything is working fine after building this circuit. when i checked TP5100 Light, light is flickering rather i can say it's toggling between red and blue. So is this normal behavior? Is it due to frequent charging discharging of battery as battery is used everytime to power router ?

    In my experience it is always better to use more battery voltage than required & step down it using DC to Dc Step down circuit. I am using 3 li ion 1500 mAh batteries reducing the voltage from 12.6 to 9 volt by using stepdown circuit for my TP link router. It gave me more than 5 hours backup & still it is able to give more than 2 hour backup. My need was long backup & not auto switch over. So I kept the circuit very simple & separate to avoid unwanted continuous battery charging. There are lot many protection circuits but either they are too costly if you go for good one or fail to work if low cost circuit is used. Lead acid battery has no problem in this respect but the circuit will be too bulky.

    • @TheSmarterThings

      Hello bimal. As it is an online ups so yes it will draw the power but that will be less. the most power will be drawn from the 5822 diode due to shortest path current can see with less resistance. However, i have tried to put a mosfer before xl6009, but i was not trigger it immediately as the power goes off. This caused th router to switch off for a second and switch on later. I understand sir you have made the right calculations but unfortunately the powerbanks and not made for instant switching. The ic inside the pcb of powerbank do this to make the battery charging efficient and reduce the output current of powerbank when it is charging. It is kind of safety feature which cannot br bypassed. Hence, we cannot use a powerbank to drive the load uninterrupted when the charging is removed and connected again. I do have circuit in my mind. However, I would have to test it. If it worked, I will make a video of it for sure.

    • @TheSmarterThings
      @TheSmarterThings  3 роки тому

      This is not a constant current board. This is just a BMS board. The BMS is not equal to the charger. I know there are lot of UA-cam videos where people show you connect these directly to adaptor which is dangerous. The setup may work fine and look easy. But every battery do have some internal resistance and have specific charging current. Over current will cause thermal runaway and will blow up the battery. A Li-Ion batt.has a peculiar charging characteristic that most people could not understand and follow. That is why these batteries have an internal circuit which does the “Dirty” work for you. All you have to do is connect the battery to the charger. If you do not have an internal circuit-you will have to do the “Dirty” work yourself. Here goes:
      Connect the battery to a suitable power supply, and adjust the current flowing into the battery to be between 10 and 70% of it’s rating(Say the battery is rated at 2 AH, than adjust to .2 to 1.4 amps.)That phase of the charge will be the “Constant current”step. As the battery voltage will increase, the current flowing into the battery will decrease. You must watch the current often, and adjust the power supply voltage up to restore the current to the value you started with.You do this until the battery voltage gets to 4.2 volts/cell(Namely, if you are charging two batteries connected in series, the total voltage you are looking for is 8.4 volts).At this point, the battery is about 70% charged.
      At this point, you switch to a constant voltage charge.You will notice that the battery voltage will increase beyond the 4.2 volts/cell.You need to watch the voltage often and keep lowering the power supply voltage to maintain the 4.2 volts/cell.
      Charging is complete when the current into the battery reaches 10% of the current you started with(If it was 1.4 amps-it should be 0.14 amps). At this point, the battery is 100% charged.
      One more important point. Li-Ion batteries do not like to reach zero volts. If you allow this to happen, EVEN ONCE-the battery capacity(It’s amp-hours) will drop to about 30% !!!! The built in battery circuit will turn the battery output off when it’s voltage reaches around 2 volts(Varies w/the manufacturer).You can notice that. Li-Ion batteries stop working abruptly. They do not dim out as they reach the end of discharge.
      This is the reason why we do have dedicated chargers for lithium ion battery. I will not recommend this to directly connect this. But to use a CC Cv module to charge it. By setting the max current to 1.2 A. You can read more information on this process here -

      Tp5100 does have any BMS features, it is just a charger. Battery pack is built using 2 battery in series with a partial balance BMS hence it is 2S configuration not parallel. Diodes are used to charge the battery and bypass the input power directly to output load.

      Hello, the 4A is the maximum output current of xl6009 at a certain voltage. However, the actual output current depends on the internal resistance of any device. Hence, xl6009 will the only provide the output current to a value your router asks. No need to worry, This device will work fine until the volatge is stable at 12v.

However if we build a off line ups, it will turn off the router and bring it back online. Such kind of thing can be easily built using a single component ie. Load Switch ic.
      But this kind of thing is not useful in most of the cases. however if you want to build it, i can help you to build it in a better way.
      Reason of switching behavior while using a power bank :
      1. Power bank charging - how the powerbank will be charge that is very critical otherwise it will be drained completely most of the time affecting battery swollen and battery life issue.
      2. Switching : Power bank never keeps delivering the power on the usb port. It will only turn on when it see some resistance (load) connected to it. Hence, until you actually put router to draw powrr from the power bank, it will remain.

    I done all correct but red light and blue light always glowing even when it is not connected to 12v adapter. When I disconnect the battery, both light stop glowing. When I supply 12v and turned on the battery pack, it again shows 2 lights glowing. Also I set the boost converter voltage to 12v. But my router doesn't work. When I set it to 10.5 Volts, router works, but only for 10 seconds even if I supply 12 Volts. It resets and starts again and again. My router is rated for 12volts 1 amp

      Only schottky diodes willl work. If you use any other Diodes, Voltage drop and pwerloss will be more. DEVICE WILL HAVE LESS BACKUP, as you will loose lot of battery energy to reach to breakdown potential.

    Very informative video. I haven't found anyone on UA-cam making such an elaborative video on LiPo UPS. I have a question for you. I read the datasheet and found TP5100 already comes with all protection features, and it already supports 2S (2 batteries in series). Right? So why do we still need the BMS? And the BMS you are using is a simple BMS with only charge-discharge protection. It doesn't come with a battery protection IC, such as "8254A" (i.imgur.com/gwRqByP.png), like this guy is explaining: ua-cam.com/video/kuEgZELszLk/v-deo.html. He uses almost same approach as yours, but with some tweak which I did not quite understand. What's you though on this? And do you really need a BMS if you are using TP5100?

    • @TheSmarterThings
      @TheSmarterThings  4 роки тому

      Two things you need to Google. 1. Are the 12v 2a adaptor is constant current source? well that is not. I don't know why these people make such videos with proper knowledge about the Li Ion batteries. People are not using the apparatus to charge the battery. You can also google why a Li ion battery needs a constant current constant voltage for charging. Simply connecting an adaptor to a balance connector 1. will make the adaptor to overheat 2. blow off the battery. The right approach would be to use Constant current, constant voltage buck module to limit the charging current to to safe limits which will let your battery to charge at safer current. Pushing high current will blow your battery no matter how good you use the bms. 3s Bms will only provide short circuit, over charge, over discharge and balance charging. But it will not protect your battery from high current charging. You can google it out more :).
      2. Tp5100 is a constant current constant voltage charge module, As your battery will be discharged from its terminal, not from tp5100, the 2s bms is used there. It also prevents your battery to discharge till the safer limits. If you don't use that battery will be drained completely and might lose its capacity from several thousand discharge cycles to seven discharges in just few days. 8254A is used for 1s configuration, 2s bms have different ic for 2s configuration, check this robu.in/product/2s-8a-18650-7-4v-8-4v-lithium-battery-protection-board/?pid=600732 . Also, if you want to study the bms and batteries, Kindly do some research and read some good research papers on this. This will help you to gain more in depth knowledge on this vast topic.

      if u are not using bms and using tp4056, everything fine but it cant sense when to cut off the voltage to stop battery charging as load is also connected to its output terminal in this case it is wifi router, till load is connected battery will be charge and might be get overcharge which can be dangerous, this schematic is much better than previous one. i will definitely
      try this.
