"You must tell people that they'll achieve a superior kind of happiness by giving up everything that makes them happy. That's the oldest one of all. It stands to reason that where there's sacrifice, there's someone collecting sacrificial offerings. Where there's service, there's someone being served. The man who speaks to you of sacrifice, speaks of slaves and masters. And intends to be the master. I said, 'It stands to reason.' Do you see? Men have a weapon against you. Reason. So you must be very sure to take it away from them. Cut the props from under it. But be careful. Never deny anything outright. Just say that reason is limited. That there's something above it. What? You don't have to be too clear about it. You tell him he must not try to think, he must feel. He must believe. Suspend reason and you play it deuces wild. Jesus died for our sins and shame, so that we may live! 5 “And when you pray, do not be like the hypocrites, for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the street corners to be seen by others. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward in full. 6 But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you. 7 And when you pray, do not keep on babbling like pagans, for they think they will be heard because of their many words. 8 Do not be like them, for your Father knows what you need before you ask him." Atlas Shrugged is Rand's central work. It is very long. It starts off somewhat slow taking a great deal of time to describe characters and circumstances. Then, it grows more compelling by the page. It works on many levels. If you have the time to read leisurely and ponder as you go, this will probably be the best book you ever read. Fountainhead is also a great one and much shorter.
Your inclinations are serving you well. You will be enriched for having investigated Ayn Rand further. No question about it. Also, one of her many nonfiction books, "The Virtue of Selfishness" used concrete reasoning to help connect many dots for me and to validate what I was already suspecting to be true.
Autojones so fighting against those who deny a raped woman the right to abortion; the freedom to birth control pills; and female foeticide, is "mind control"?
If you use those things to justify telling people what they can say ,Like in Canada "feminist" support the "government" in dictating what people can and can not say. like making laws about how you have to address male and female or trans.
Autojones fake feminists. Feminism is about protecting female rights not man trashing. Anyone who doesn't follow that isn't a feminist, don't believe them when they say they are one, they're just using it as a facade to their own means. In my country atrocities against women are a serious problem, female foeticide is so rampant there are entire districts that can't find wifes and daughter in law, and they then resort to kidnapping women from neighbouring districts to make them their wives. Women are forced to have children until they give birth to a male child. So marital rape is rampant. The constitution protects against these, but the culture of people doesn't, so any self respecting woman who raised her voice against these is considered characterless, if a raped woman wants to file charges the police questions her morality "she shouldn't have gone out at that time, she shouldn't have worn that dress, she shouldn't have existed, it's her duty to comply as a wife" (eyeroll)
Even though Rand would have probably have been appalled by this comparison, Toohey's advice is very similar in many ways to that of the devil-like character in C S. Lewis's Screwtape Letters, wherein the devil-like character writes to his nephew, a lesser, novice devil, on how to demoralize and weaken the religious faith of his human victims. I say Rand would have been appalled because of course she was an ostensible atheist, while Lewis was a prominent Christian. I say "Ostensible atheist" because there are places in Rand's writings that suggest some non-atheistic features of her thought. At one point in the Fountainhead someone says of Roark that though he will say he does not believe in God, he really does. Rand has also written somewhere that "God is a psychological reality". Isn't that a type of belief? There are differences between Screwtape and Toohey, however. Whereas Toohey is trying to destroy humankind's hope and spirit, Screwtape's aim is to corrupt human souls, and, ultimately, to lead them to damnation.
One thing wrong. You dont destroy happiness, or else they will look beyond you to find happiness. Overload them with happiness until they dont think or use their brains. This is something the Soviets never were able to achieve
We saw that in the 1980's, a time of comfort, ease, toys, lavish living, and false pride, delusion-city, and by the 1990's, many fewer were thinking critically, and by then, the downward-spiral could be felt and seen.
I can think of one historical individual who achieved that level of altruism, who so happens to be the inspiration of billions throughout the world. But altruism has always been, and can never not be but an individual endeavor, not a principle imposed upon one against his will. Any system that demands one be made poorer so others can be made richer is inherently evil, not altruistic by any means.

This is awesome
I need this book.
Sounds exactly how the current administration operates
every administration

FOR EXAMPLE?
@@michaelshapiro1543 He's talking about the Obama Administration.
I don't think i would've liked Ayn Rand the woman... but her philosophy is nothing short of astonishing!
Very good but :
Rand was well aware of the need to subdue the indulgent desires in oneself that considered to not be in the true interest of the individual. And that such understanding is part of true reason. Perhaps not all humans have this true reason and just indulge and their emotional addictions.
She was wrong about the main thing though ― the true system for progressives - isn't capitalism - it's Meritocracy -

That pretty well sums up religions and every other entrenched ideological position as well.
"Man realizes that he is incapable of altruism, this gives him guilt"
This summarizes whats wrong with altruism.
You are blaming rand. Try to prove her wrong if you can.
history proves ayn rand is wrong? how? give me example. Hitler? If he as selfish, he would become leader, made millions, bought an island and retired. Infact his political party was socialist. Stalin was not selfish, he killed 30 million people. Infact he was altruist.
lol..."you clowns"....i did not expect a matured response anyway. I gave you example, you did not. You talk about horrors of selfishness with such passion, but not real example. I gave example of altruists who committed crime on humanity, instead of acknowledging it, you still deny. This shows you have no argument against rand. You just deny the reality. good luck, look at your metal state, before pointing at my upbringing.
You are talking nonsense. You are what you blame rand for - Inflexible. I gave an example, you deny it without reason. and call me idiot. If randism is not practical and never applied anywhere what are you upset about? People like you only, pretend care about others, carry flag of altruism, but get upset with simple criticism. Selfish people only care about themselves, but dont necessarily hurt others. People like you want to hurt and demean, others to feel better.
There are several fallacies, if not entirely, in your sentences. Firstly, there is nothing like Randism. Sencondly Rand was not against democracy. Thirdly her whole philosophy was about dignity. And you started sentence with giving an excuse for being hurt, with simple argument. Can this get any pathetic?
The narrator reminds me of Lucien from Oblivion. Hail Sithis.
Seeing how guilty one is from just leaving his home. Buying his groceries. Wearing masks, not because you want to wear, but because you have to comply!
Postmodern Christianity explained in 4 minutes.
@JC S yes she does. The ones who only pay attn to the part of Jesus they could agree with or bothered to look up.
Yes, Real Christianity is a way of life, not a religion.
8 Do not be like them, for your Father knows what you need before you ask him."
Jesus knows the heart of man, because we see these very acts TODAY!!
Problem with modern Christianity is they cucked. Cucking is inevitable when women are empowered
@@savagetv6460 I* disagree because even in the OT, you have Deborah who helped in the finishing off of the Amorites, You have Ezra, and a few others. The problem with Christianity today is that they practice it one day a week, do not study scripture, and do not root out false doctrine. Laodicean Church Age has a dire warning by Jesus in the book of Revelation.
Plus, women have one of the most difficult job in the world, and that is raising children, keeping up the home, and putting up with men lol.
Edit: spelling mistake.
@@turtlewax3849 back in biblical times women were expected to be wives and mothers first. That is long dead and now we have broken families and mentally kids

Welcome to the theme of 2021.
Brilliant...
This is Literally, quite so, what is happening in 2020, and for the past 10 years specially, and truly since the liberal beginnings of the 1960's - And she wrote this 1943!!!! The WHOLE Section is Exactly what's going on! Almost sentence by Sentence! Got what a genius and philosopher.
I really like this reading. That opening soundtrack is so good, can you share the artist?
This is frighteningly astute. No wonder Rand is such a controversial figure; few can handle the seemingly terrible truths in her writings.
Elsworth Toohey's character is incredibly sinister...one of my favorites.

Sad fact of the matter is man chooses to be ruled in favour of comfort, man fears being free...
*"swimming upstream" might be putting it a better way (fear of disapproval). Freedom requires the ability to stand alone, and few can do that.
Thank you
Bravo!!!
This is just as much a condemnation of religion as it is a condemnation of statism.
Beautiful.
Would you believe me if I told you all religion is statism?
Anyone blaming feminism, patriarchy, leftists, or any group are a part of the problem and the kind Toohey would thrive amongst. Blame everyone, and remain the victim! If you're not trying to master yourself and your single craft all alone, like Howard Roark with architecture, like Steven Mallory with sculpting, like Gail Wynand with business or like Dominique Francon with rebellion, you are forever dependent on others
well put!
Edward sure knew how to narrate.
Wow!
We are the Priest of the Temples of Syrinx.
This reminds me of the movie Christmas With the Kranks.
She was very perceptive of what would happen and really how it would happen.
Truths.
Omg thanks you.
Also to remember...this is how Ann saw her experience of "Toohey" through her unique "lens". The story's undercurrent is love, betrayal and cheating spouses...
should i read atlas shrugged first or fountainhead?
Atlas Shrugged is Rand's central work. It is very long. It starts off somewhat slow taking a great deal of time to describe characters and circumstances. Then, it grows more compelling by the page. It works on many levels. If you have the time to read leisurely and ponder as you go, this will probably be the best book you ever read. Fountainhead is also a great one and much shorter.
fzqlcs thank you. I just discovered Ayn Rand and just wanted to know which book to read first.
Your inclinations are serving you well. You will be enriched for having investigated Ayn Rand further. No question about it. Also, one of her many nonfiction books, "The Virtue of Selfishness" used concrete reasoning to help connect many dots for me and to validate what I was already suspecting to be true.
Fountainhead
Chilling
I really dig the voice actor just as much as the author. He Sounds like Fountain from the Bioshock games.
White guilt in a nutshell.
This book is a shield and sword for today’s time.
Altruism is not helping your neighbor at your own expense that is called hyper altruism and must be avoided at all cost.
Toohey, Hooey, Phooey!
You know it's funny, sometimes Ellesworth Toohey seemed curiously similar to C.S. Lewis' conception of a demon. Gave me some _major_ Screwtape vibes!
Sounds like Mr. Tenpenny
Much of this reminds me of Gustav Le Bon's description of effect leaders of crowds- happiness is worthless (to incite revolution).
Wow
Watching this video made me think of religion. That's exactly how it operates!
Feminism in a nutshell
Feminism, multiculturalism, political correctness. ..all mind control weapons.
Autojones
fake feminists.
EVERY ism in a nutshell.
I think there are many politicians who think like that.
Boy did she call it!
The title of this video should really say ---- Ellsworth Toohy - How To Rule Mankind

Andrew Ryan :)
seems like i got way deep into bioshock
This above all. To thine own self be true. And it follows , as night follows day , thou canst not be false to any man.

These ideas are not acceptable in our culture, which is why I prefer to be uncultured.
Well said for that Kofi - Europeans white people in general seem to have lost their human souls, in most cases some time ago. I say that and I am white.
