Greg Beale has a great article on The Gospel Coalition Blog about Why Is the Number of the Beast 666 in Revelation 13:18. I wholeheartedly agree with everything he says there but think that there is a layer that's missing.
Whenever you are interpreting a text, you should always look to the closest connections first. The number "666" occurs with three people: Solomon (1 Kings 10:14 and 2 Chronicles 9:13), the returned exiles (Ezra 2:13), and the beast (Rev. 13:18).
Given how specific and rare this number is, it seems that John is alluding to one of the two of these OT references and I believe the allusion is to Solomon's 666.
1 Kings 10:14 states,
Now the weight of gold that came to Solomon in one year was 666 talents of gold
This may seem unconnected to the beast in Revelation, but when you discover the purpose and the placement of this text in the book of Kings, layers are opened up in Revelation.
Up to 1 Kings 10:14, Solomon has been a paradigmatic king: he built God's temple, he prayed for wisdom instead of wealth, and he included gentiles in both the construction of the temple and in the teaching of wisdom.
But 1 Kings 10:14 starts a sequence of three paragraphs that detail Solomon's violation of the three laws of kingship given in Deuteronomy 17:14-20: don't accumulate much gold, horses (for warfare), or many wives. Thus 666 is the pivot between the man of the highest wisdom and deepest folly; indeed the deepest folly because he had the highest wisdom. Solomon, the son of David, embodies the best and the worst of humanity.
666 in Revelation
When we look at the beast in Revelation, along with those who are aligned with the beast (those who follow the beast of earth, the other beast, the harlot, etc.) commit the same three sins. As evil kings, the beast the woman and false prophet, multiply horses for warfare (Rev. 19:19), committing sexual immorality with the kings of the earth (Rev. 18:3), and make themselves wealthy on gold (Rev. 19:19).
But the point of John's identification of the beast's number as 666 is not just that they commit the same sins as a paradigmatic fallen king, Solomon, but that evil is so evil because it is the corruption of the good.
As one interpretation of Babylon holds, Babylon the harlot is Jerusalem, not (or not just) Rome. Much like Matthew's characterization of Israel as Egypt (The Art of Genius), John is communicating that the holiest city has become the harlot city, killing God's king.
This Calls for Wisdom
Now before John tells us that the number of the beast is 666 he says, "This calls for wisdom: let the one who has understanding calculate the number of the beast..." Why do we need wisdom and understanding for this number?
Perhaps because the identification is so counter intuitive. If Hitler was the beast, that would not need wisdom. But if the beast were compared to a man of the highest reputation and righteousness, that would require wisdom. Nero would make sense, Solomon needs wisdom.
This is John's warning that the beast is not a foreign, nefarious creature, but could be us.

I figured this out myself years ago, brought it up in a men's bible study, and also found few people bought into it. But this explanation is outstanding. Solomon served as King of Israel, and himself led Israel at it's apex. He himself planted the seeds for Israel's fall while leading it to it's highest heights.

I didn't just stop at Solomon. I kept going. Solomon has his weight of gold in 666. But he also worship Babylon gods. On the back of some ancient Babylonian amulets was a man with numbers adding to 666. Since we are looking for a mark of a beast, there is a mark that was worshiped in the new testament. It was a star of ramphan. This star has 6 points, 6 triangles and 6 sides of a center. This same star I believe is the star on the popes helmet.

And his fame spread to all the surrounding nations. 32 He spoke three thousand proverbs and his songs numbered a thousand and five. 33 He spoke about plant life, from the cedar of Lebanon to the hyssop that grows out of walls. He also spoke about animals and birds, reptiles and fish. 34 From all nations people came to listen to Solomon’s wisdom, sent by all the kings of the world, who had heard of his wisdom.[a]
Therefore the 666 in Rev 13 is a reference back to king Solomon from the OT, and the prophecy is saying a "beast" (king or kingdom) would arise in the future from when Revelation was written (60-69 AD) that would have properties of king Solomon. King Solomon- ruled on Palestine, built a temple, Davids offspring, went apostate which is why the kingdom split in two, and was the greatest person in the OT according to Jesus "behold one greater than Solomon is here".
The religion of modern rabbinic Judaism- people that call themselves Jews but lie they are the synagogue of satan believes they have a messiah figure coming that will rule from Palestine, build a temple (God miraculously stopped Julian the apostate building a temple in Jerusalem so a temple will probably never be built there), set up sanhedrin law courts everywhere, and force everyone to convert to the "noahide laws" (from the talmud - not from the OT), and if they don't they will get their head chopped off. One of he laws is no idolatary, and they consider it idolatrous to belive a human being can be God aka Jesus/Christianity. Symbols represent things like the cross represents Jesus/Christianity, and the 6 pointed star on their flag is called the "star of David" by themselves because it represents their messiah they think will be a star of David just like Solomon was. Christians have a different star of David. Rev 22 16 “I, Jesus, have sent my angel to give you this testimony for the churches. I am the Root and the Offspring of David, and the bright Morning Star.” The 6 pointed star is on the Leningrad codex from 1000 AD, and on early Christian era synagogues also so they have been using it for a 1700 years or so.
The word Jew in the OT does not occur until 10 books in in 2 kings 16 6. It means Judean- living in the southern kingdom of Judah or of the religion of the Judeans which was Moses religion.The Persians converted at one point " they became Jews" but they were not necessarily living in Judah so in that context it means of the religion of the Judeans. In NT it means living in Judea/ of the religion of those people with the different sects at the time. Peter was a Galilean but a "Jew" so again in that context it means of the religion of the Judeans. Paul was a "Jew" but from the tribe of Benjamin so no it does not mean geanologically descended from Judah although a lot of the Judeans would of been. Peter followed the actual OT while Paul followed the pharasiac form of it. The oral tradition on which the talmud is based on is mentioned in Mark 7 (traditions of the elders that make the word of God aka the law of Moses at the time of none effect therefore modern rabbinic Judaism is not based on Moses), and mentioned by Josephus about 130 BC. Jesus is called a Jew/Judean three times once by the wise men, once the Samaratin woman, once on the cross. He was a "Jew" meaning he followed the letter of the law of Moses but also gave the correct spiritual letter of the law interpretation of it which the pharisees did not like, born in Judea, killed in Judea, rose from the dead in Judea, but he did not have the same religion as the pharisees which the religion of modern rabbinic Judaism traces back to.
The word Jew is only used in the NT in reference to the OT religion. It lost all meaning 2000 years ago. Same with gentile/Israel/Judaism. Romans 2 28 is to help the old covenant Jews adapt to the new covenant. The last book of the NT written- Revelation- explains there are people using the old covenant identity- but they are lying- they are the synagogue of satan- this is rabbinic Judaism/ the oral torah. There is no evidence of an oral torah in the OT except sometimes when the israelites went evil, and started their own religions someone could argue their was an oral tradition passed on then but the righteous Israelites that wrote the OT did not follow an oral torah. The problem comes when using the word "Jew" to refer to both the OT people/religion but also the people/religion in the Christian era that self identify as such because they are two different things one being the synagogue of satan.
The remnant in Romans was alive "at this time" aka first century AD. It makes sense it was the first 144 000 in Revelation 7 as that focuses on genealogy.
Ephesians 1, romans 8, and another time predestination appears it says "first fruits" or "we who were the first to put our faith in him" or " first fruits of the holy spirit" so that's why it was only them. Calvinism appeals to someone's pride. The bible says "do not think to highly of yourselves", and that was written to the first century AD Christians some of which had seen Jesus risen from the dead, all his miracles, and even done miracles themselves!
Revelation 1-12, Mathew 24-25 (great tribulation, rapture, seconding but not final judgement coming) all happened in the first century AD. Revelation 13 has not happened yet. There is a 2000 year gap between Rev 12, and 13.

@@yeahyeahyeah2935 Within Judaism itself, there are strong rabbinic critics of Solomon. He left the people deeply deeply taxed and the son he supposedly should have well prepared for the kingship was a terrible king who clearly didn’t care about the burdens he and his father had laid on the citizenship. Immense success like Solomon had early in his reign is a dangerous thing we should not envy in others, nor desire for ourselves.

Everyone racks their brains trying to figure out the specific individual tied to the number of the beast. Since a very early age, I've always translated it as being about the 'nature' of the "beast"; which, as the Bible points out way back in Genesis 6:5, is "only evil continually". That's just me, though.
Thank you for sharing. I agree completely. You left out the 6 lions on each side of the 6 steps leading up to the throne. I think the key is the three 6`s leading to Solomon`s throne. It is in the throne of Solomon and God`s promises concerning that throne that reveal the mystery. The beast that once was, now is not and will rise up out of hell and go to perdition, That`s my humble view.

Yes! 666 IS a reference to King Solomon. The Bible says it is the "number of man" or a "human number" The Greek word is the general word for "mankind" (anthropos) and not the word used for a particular man (andros) , so we shouldn't go look for a specific identity I don't think. "Man" in Revelation always means "Jewish". Hence it is a Jewish number, as you pointed out, from 1 Kings 10:14. Deuteronomy 17 is the Law against multiplying gold,woman,horses and Solomon violated this . Later on he lost his kingdom due to his sin. Just so, the High Priest in the 1st century lost their rule as the "kings of the land" when the apostatized, hence are connected with Solomon's sin. As Solomon lost his kingdom when the northern tribes rebelled after his death, so the Land Beast (Rome) lost his kingdom permanently when Jerusalem was destroyed.

Wow! I never saw it this way. This makes a lot of sense. A lot of names can add up to 666. I don't think God in all his wisdom would just give us a clue that easy to find and still say we need wisdom 🤔. But this... Yes! This needs wisdom. The Beast could actually be us. Look at how the world is exalting self. When this matures and humanity has reached the pick of self love, there is no evil he won't do. 🤯

The second beast of Revelation, often referred to as the antichrist, is Lucifer himself. The analogy between Solomon and Lucifer is obvious. Both were given the highest level of wisdom and both fell to corruption. The wisdom of the number 666 is that it tells when the antichrist arrives (which is before the true Christ, there is no rapture). The antichrist comes on the 6th trump, the 6th seal, and the 6th vial,. The true Christ will return on the 7th trump, the 7th seal, and the 7th vial.
Antichrist is an order, "Do that, which you want and can do."
Christ is an order, "Do only that, which would be acceptable to all mankind."
If you'll calculate 666 using the Greek letters, you get "tradition" or, in other words, order.

To count or calculate the number of the beast Is to add, subtract, multiple, devide, or to add up to the number you are looking for.. Years ago I worked summers on a farm in Michigan, near a fundamentalist Christian community. I didn’t know much about them other than that you didn’t want to get behind one of their members in a checkout line, because if their total had the number six in it, they would keep buying things until the sixes disappeared. This behavior came from a fear of having anything to do with the number 666, which some Christians have connected to Satan and see as a symbol of evil.
The whole issue goes back to the New Testament’s Book of Revelation, particularly the verse which says, “One who understands can calculate the number of the beast, for it is a number that stands for a person. His number is six hundred and sixty-six” (Rev. 13:18).
One wonders where all the fear about the sinister 666 comes from, because the author provided some pretty good clues about its meaning right in the passage. First, the number is a definite product of a numerical process which an attentive reader-“one who understands”-could arrive at. Second, it stands for a real person, a specific historical figure.
In the biblical world, the number seven stood for wholeness and completeness, so to be called a “666” was an insult implying that you were short of being the real thing. Also, if you take the Greek form of the name of the Emperor Nero, the Roman emperor around the time of Revelation, and write it in Hebrew, the letters, which can also have numeric values, “add up” to-you guessed it-666.
For its original audience, the number symbolized the repressive Roman Empire personified in its “beastly” emperor, which, though it claimed divine authority and had seemingly absolute power, would always be a “six,” never a “seven,” and thus would not prevail in the long run.
Unfortunately some Christians have forgotten the original historical context of the number. Over the centuries many have come to see the numbers and other symbols in the Book of Revelation as a secret code by which they could predict the future or connect the dots between the Bible and the contemporary world to show how God’s apocalyptic plans are unfolding in current events.
This secret-code school of reading Revelation and other biblical prophetic books does get one thing right. The vivid images in the book are symbolic, but symbolic to a particular time and place, not shapeable to whatever someone wants them to mean. Like any passage of scripture, you first have to look at the original meaning. In the case of Revelation, the book was encouraging an embattled Christian community to remain faithful and be wary of conforming too closely to the ways of the hostile world. The number 666 has never had magical powers, good or bad. That’s superstition, not religion.

The Bible states in First Kings, chapter 10, verse 14 that 666 was the number of talents of gold collected annually while Solomon was King. I believe the Bible is art, and there can be multiple layers of symbolism in the number 666. And while I appreciate this video, I believe the first and most important interpretation of the number of the beast is that it is referring to Nero. We can’t just say Nero would make sense and therefore it cant be Nero because we need wisdom. The truth is that Nero was referred to as a beast in the first century because he was incredibly wicked and persecuted the Christians. The sum of his name in numeric value comes out to be 666. John is writing during Nero’s reign and he is warning Christians of what is to come very soon in the destruction of Jerusalem.

I think this is interesting and today I was reading in 2 chronicles 9 when I first saw the relation to 666 and Solomon the gold Wright however doesn't say elsewhere maybe in revelation or Daniel something relating to fact that when the beast is on earth and present something relating to believers will be taken or some say as the rapture. I need to dig out verses or passages I'm relating too yet I think anyone in old or new testament couldn't be Satan or known as the Beast/ Antichrist. There's some hints of similar in bible but nothing close to this digital currency being introduced and the 7 uniting through united nations sounds more like end times generation is now.

Yes, but that was only a sign that points to a deeper truth. The second beast of Revelation, often referred to as the antichrist, is Lucifer himself. The analogy between Solomon and Lucifer is obvious. Both were given the highest level of wisdom and both fell to corruption. While I understand the point you are trying to make, the Bible does not support your arguments. The "great city" of Jerusalem is not Babylon. Babylon is the Antichrist's kingdom. Your references to multiplying horses, women, and gold are not in Revelation 18 and/or 19. In fact, it's not there at all. The gold you refer to is of the merchants who get rich off the people (18:5) and not of the Antichrist. The horses are not actual horses; they are the plagues that God will send to the earth in the last days (except the white horse, see ch6). And there is nothing at all about multiplying women, especially in ch19. I do agree that references to 666 in the stories of Solomon and Adonikam have relevance to the future Antichrist. However, we can only humanly conclude that it refers to his nature. Yes, he will be very wise in every way possible way like Solomon (political, economical, spiritual, etc). And, yes, he will be very rich. He will be so charismatic and interesting that everyone will want to follow him. That is, until they figure out who he is and finally acknowledge that Jesus is King (Isaiah 45:23). I appreciate you trying to help people understand the Bible, but you really must review your facts and be sure the Scriptures support it. Because if it doesn't, it's just not true. And neither is the content in this video. The Bible would call this false teaching.
