    Aussie Dave here, again great development , I had 4 poinciana seeds which germinate two years ago only 2 survived 😔. Mine are slowly growing. 🤗🤗

      I have always been amazed at how quickly everything grows here. But if I didn't do it myself, I'm not sure I'd believe these are only 5 months old.

    My boyfriend got me a starter kit for Christmas, I planted my seeds in January. These are my first bonsai’s the royal poinciana has taken off. I still have it in regular potting soil with perlite. Do you think I should repot into better soil or wait for next spring? The trunk is not as thick as yours yet, and for some reason the bottom leaves turned yellow and fell off this last week. Looking for videos to help, tips and tricks! Thank you

      I would wait until spring. This time of year it is common for the ones even here in florida to start a little yellowing.

    Wow, great job growing from seeds! Really impressive. 👍 Don’t let the students jokes get you down… keep on talking. You’re very interesting. And when they get to our age they will breathe heavier as well…. And the next generation will tease them…

      Thanks! Depending on where you are in the world would make a difference. I think early spring would be the best time. Now that these have recovered from Hurricane Ian they also seem ready for another repot but I will wait until late January which is basically early spring for us in South Florida.

    Mines over a year old but it's so much thinner than your plants although getting there. My plants bark though isn't so smooth but same coloring. But it's grown a lot this season. Have made a note though to fertilize with fish emulsion more. Repot it recently in more compost and vermicompost sandy soil mix and its responded really well. Didn't go through any shock. Just was like thank goodness a bigger pot more space carried on popping out leaves 😂 Maybe it's just down to genetics of the seeds the trees they came from. My tree has always made the longest leaflets, like it's already making such canopy for such a small plant. Mine germinated in a cotton wool and grew towards the light and it has an interesting shape so accentuated its natural shape. And rotate it to grow towards the sun in the direction i want it to grow to make it look more balanced. Not sure how to get branching. But i am just actually letting it grow and do its thing i do want to keep mine on the smaller side so i don't need to move it completely outside. Thanks for showing how you grow them, haven't seen many progression videos about them.

    I didn’t read all the comments but I believe the black stuff on the plant is from white fly.
    I live just north of Delray. Where are you? I’m having fun with my Royal Poinciana bonsai. When ever I see mature trees I look underneath and usually find some small trees that grew. The seeds are very hard to grow!!

      I am almost directly across the state in Cape Coral. I grew all of these from seed. They got beat up pretty good during the hurricane, got a bunch of new growth, the new growth got pretty damaged in the cold. But they've got buds and winter doesn't last long......

      I’m new at growing bonsai. I love it already. I took a class in January and we used a small leaf jade plant.
      I’ve been trying to grow R.P. from seed , but it’s hard!! I’ve boiled them, let them sit in water, a slow cooker was the best option for me. They sprouted to about 4 inches or so, then I went skiing and my son didn’t baby sit them and they died.
      Then, when I was collecting pods, I saw little trees growing-some about 5-6 inches. I’ve dealt with ghost gnats, both inside and outside the house. I’m determined to grow one. I think they are beautiful, but messy.
      I’ve got about 40+ pods. Let me know if you need any seeds.
      I’ve got about 7 going now. 1

    Hi, question… at 3:07 your plant had 2 thick leaves on the bottom. Are they important for growing stronger? I know it might be a dumb question but the leaves on mine got caught in the seed and started to blossom out with the thick leaves still stuck. I trimmed them off but now I’m freaking out and worried I may have harmed my bonsai 😕

    • @TropicalBonsai
      @TropicalBonsai  4 місяці тому

      Those are the seed leaves also known as cotyledon leaves. You can take them off or leave them on, doesn't matter much.

    Hi! How are your Poincianas doing? Mine has grown to 2 ft and I'm thinking of what to do with it so I can keep it in the pot. But the trunk is much thinner so I don't know if chopping will work.

    • @TropicalBonsai
      @TropicalBonsai  Рік тому

      I was hoping to post an update video by now. They were recovering nicely from the hurricane when we had a near freeze and all of the foliage was new so they didn't do well. They are all still alive but having a slow recovery, I'm hoping to do an update video in 2-3 weeks. If you plan to chop yours I would do it in early spring, especially if you do not live in the tropics.

    • @LaSnob711

      Thank you so much for your response.😃 I'm in the EU, northern Mediterranean where winters are very cold occasionally freezing so I couldn't leave my Ponci outside, that's why I'd like to keep it at 5 ft max to be able to keep it in the pot and move it in for Winter. Is that doable? It's been indoors so far because it's super hot and sunny on my West facing patio in the Summer. So as it is early spring I will proone it now. It also needs repotting as the pot is too small by now and roots are growing out of it. How long must I wait after prooning to repot and what kind of soil do you suggest? Thank you again and I hope your trees recover from the horrible weather. I'm not made for Winter either so I'm just recovering from the cold myself 😄

      I use a pre mixed soil from my local bonsai nursery. It is lava, pumice and some pine bark. I use osmocote for fertilizer, although I just read an article about switching up brands periodically so I may use miracle grow this season.

    Why do you want it to get an escape root? I'm new to bonsai.

    • @TropicalBonsai
      @TropicalBonsai  2 роки тому +1

      Roots will grow straight down if you let them. This allows quick growth but you can separate the pot from the ground and prune the roots without repotting if you want. I never did that with these trees but the other use is that they will anchor themselves to the ground and not keep blowing over. And these were doing that quite a bit until I put them directly on the ground and let the roots escape.

    Just found your channel and have been watching through your videos. I like your style and your videos are entertaining.
    I've watched a couple that you mentioned you think you talk too much in your videos and it bugs you. I personally think talking through videos is good and informative, especially for those new to bonsai looking to understand why certain things are done. I think maybe your talking speed might be what really bugs you - i also speed up when i have an audience or am talking to a screen instead of one on one. If you try slowing to a more conversational tempo, i don't think it would bug you as much. Pretty much all the bonsai channels i watch have the creator speaking throughout.

      Thanks so much for the feedback. I don't know exactly which videos you have watched but I have mentioned that I teach high school math. Both the kids and I laugh all day, while still accomplishing some math work. I am so much more comfortable in front of 35 teenagers than I am alone in a room with a camera. Something about not knowing who may watch one day. I am trying to improve though.
