I think the humor with Stilgar was meant to make the audience let their guard down about the Fremen’s religious devotion to their Messiah. They make it seem like it’s just some old guys being silly so that it hits you like a truck when you see Stilgar bleeding in the sand and begging Paul to kill him and become his Messiah. And as soon as the audience realizes the weight of the Fremen’s religion, you see just how much Jessica has twisted it to suit her own ends.

The way I interpret it, is that it shows the absurdism of messianic faith by taking a guy like Stilgar (who is completely competent, I don't think he fails at anything he does - fuck he's not even wrong to think Paul is the prophecied saviour) and reducing him to saying shit like "he says he is not Lissan Al Gaib - but that just shows he is humble and PROVES he is!"
Then we see the scary side of messianic faith later.
It does diminish the character somewhat I will say, but the tradeoff is enhancing the film's subtext and making him standout from the crowd of rather dour characters.
A worthwhile choice, as I'm sure Denis concluded too.

He’s afraid of his fate in the book too. He doesn’t actively tell the firemen he’s not a messiah like he does at the begging of this film, but he doesn’t want his “terrible purpose” that has been thrust upon him. I think his characterization in this movie was a way of showing that to the audience without voice over. A lot of the changes seem to be there for the sole purpose of explaining something that would otherwise be fleshed out in the book without dialogue etc.

I understood why _Dune: Part One_ was more expository, because it needed as much time as possible for world-building. After all, most of the book is just a bunch or world-building. But it's obvious that _Part Two_ is the movie that went "Okay, we've set up what we need to at the moment. It's time to have some fun".
And I agree that both movies need to be watched back-to-back; that they're very much inseparable.

I didn’t find Stilgar’s comedic relief particularly distracting, but I do think you’re right that it’s influenced a lot by the crowd you see it with. The only time I remember people legit laughing in my theatre was the hard cut to “he’s so *humble*! Just like the lisan al gaib would be!” Everything else was just mild chuckles, so it wasn’t too overbearing.

They already cut the whole betrayal subplot, so Thufir wasn't really necessary to the narrative.
Although now that I think about it: they didn't really bring Thufir back in the David Lynch version either. They just had the weird-ass scene where the Baron tells Thufir he needs to drink cat milk to cure the long-lasting poison he was given. After that, they never mentioned him again.

I feel like his absence from the movie and the dinner scene being cut from part 1 shows that Denis is less interested in the political machinations of dunes setting and is more into the epic scale and messianic figure deconstruction. The dinner scene was one of the most thrilling parts of the book for me. I found that Herbert’s writing shines when he’s just having two characters have a biting back and forth instead of a big space battle. Based on what Denis has said regarding his stance on movie dialogue, I can see why that’s probably not his cup of tea.

    • @CGray44
      @CGray44 3 місяці тому +113

I think that Denis traded the political and conversational sparring of the book (which would probably always have been better in the book anyway due to the ability to have a character's internal dialogue) for an increased focus on visual spectacle and character-driven action scenes, which obviously a film is able to do better than a book (especially a book like Dune). I think that in this way, both the films and the book serve as complements to one another and I'm really happy that they both are as great as they are :)

I think it's because part 1 pretty much ends in the middle of the story, where the archs of the characters are not fully realized, and also because part 1 has to spend a lot of time world building and introducing everyone. So when part 2 begins and you get to focus more on the charcaters' motivations and finally see where their developments lead (at least for this initial part of the story) you feel like you can finally understand them better and that the time spent with them in the second movie is more significant

@@anacarla6888 I can't really agree. The time the MC spends with the sand people is largely skipped over in the movie aside from the big plot moments so it feels cheap that he is already bonding with them as much as he does. The story sort of makes this irrelevant since he is taken in by most of them for religious reasons. I also think the main character is far more bland in this movie because I don't think he really has struggles or has doubt in meaningful ways. The only time I really like was when he rode the worm. Right before that he was panicking but showed resolve and still went through with it. Everything else he just did without any problems. Even the final sword fight was just a fight and he wins even though he should have died and we don't really know why. Nothing was set up prior that he used here like special footwork, he just won because he's the MC.

@@upg5147 Wdym skiped over? The entire movie is Paul spending time with the fremen. Of course there are time skips, but this takes almost the entire plot. And I don't think the story makes his bonding with them irrelevant considering that only some of the fremen (the most religious ones) can accept him as the messiah, and even then they don't immeadiately accept him as they have to witness him fullfiling their prophecies to believe. In the end, the fact that Paul is very charismatic and manages to bond with the fremen is the reason he is integrated in their culture so well and is accepted even by non believers, so that's a very relevant part of the movie as well. I also disagree with Paul having no doubts in the movie. His very character arch is about him initially struggling with the possibility of being the messiah and being afraid of what it might cause for the ones he loves and everybody else. I particularly find him more compelling here because he stops being a passive protagonist, where he just experiences the consequences of choices of others and goes wherever it leads him, and starts actively making his own decisions. There's not much to say about his fight with feyd, they were both skilled fighters and Paul ended up winning. I think they wanted to tease an almost death in order to make it more thrilling and maybe to make him fit even better the figure of a legendary hero. He became quite powerful after drinking the water of life so it wasn't really that shocking. But I guess we can agree to disagree.

The themes of people using religious zealotry as a means of control. The futility of it all, whatever Paul way chooses, he looses.

I thought that was a bit serious and my theater thought it was the funniest damn thing the ever heard. You undersell chani’s character in the book as well. While I think her rejecting Paul as the messiah is interesting, I enjoyed her characterization in the book. She accepts Paul and helps him learn the ways of the fremen but she also has a lot of say in his decisions. Jessica hates chani at first but grows to like her and even teaches her some Bene gesserit skills.
The end of the book is great, and incredibly interesting. Chani knows Paul is going to have to propose to irulan, and she fears Paul will fall out of love with her, but Jessica reassured her that real love is more powerful and important than titles. And the fate of the universe is at stake.
I think the changes to her character in this movie is going to make it near impossible to adapt dune messiah, seeing as her fertility and ongoing relationship with Paul is one of the main conflicts in that book.

I agree that most of the changes made are good changes for a film adaptation. It was very clever and works quite well to use Chani as sort of an audience surrogate who loves Paul but is very much against his Messiah role. That gives the character a lot more depth than the book, creates more interpersonal drama, and helps drive home the themes more efficiently.
I was however looking forward to seeing some things from the book (namely Alia) and didn’t quite get that. That change probably makes the story neater but I just really wanted to see what they do with the tiny witch child thing, and they pretty much just avoid it by keeping her a fetus.
I too also prefer the more grim, anxious tone of the first movie. The sequel does feel a bit more conventional in tone. Overall though it’s kind of amazing that a Dune adaptation turned out this good.
And I really want Dune Messiah!!
Messiah is my favorite book in the series so far.
