I met her in Miami when she was staying with a neighbor. She sat by the pool drinking and smoking with a big hat and sunglasses. When I told my mum Veronica Lake was the name of old lady visiting next door Mum got all excited and made an excuse to go vist. I had no idea who she was. I was 8 yo.Never saw Mum so excited.
My mother was a fan of hers. Mum had a peakaboo hair style trying to look like Lake. She captured the heart of my dad with her peakaboo. In a strange twist of fate, without Lake’s screen presence I may never have been.

She actually left because her husband had ruined her career by turning down movie roles for her without telling her. She had a pilots license and used the plane she had bought for him to fly from LA to NY. Despite what you are hearing she says she was happy with her life in NY and was paying $1900 a month rent which is like $4,000 in today’s money.

I’m impressed that she was able to fly from California to NY on her own. That shows there was more to Veronica Lake than Hollywood. Maybe without fame she would have had a more fulfilling life.
I was thinking the same thing, rather impressive she had a valid license to fly, but to do it solo. She was def a go getter in her time.
Flying planes back then were difficult. So many controls, instruments, many many parameters to manage! My respect to her. She was born 100 years too early. A lot of intelligent, ambitious women were discouraged to attain career satisfaction.

She was beautiful. And her mother had the looks, that she inherited. But the mother seemed to push her into the acting. It's a pity she chose lifestyle over her husband and young baby. Motherhood is a real blessing. Losing the second baby very tough. It would highlight the importance of Motherhood to most women.

But I understand your viewpoint and your lucky that you have never been through the hell of it. I have and died from an overdose which showed me the best high ever…. Spiritually awakening! After 3 days in a coma it was hell being back in my body and the doctors were telling me that I would loose my legs from injecting and I knew differently but I had been healed during my time in the light but it took all the strength I had to go through cold turkey bc I was too ill for methadone to stay in my system and I was in hospital for a year but a year after coming out of hospital I had gotten away from the pimp that had injected me in my sleep and I had a beautiful Japanese spitz dog and was jogging with her on the leg’s that needed 17 surgeries to get all the infection out of my bones so I would like to say to anyone with a serious diagnosis that they shouldn’t take the white coat’s of the doctor as the big part we are brought up to take so seriously when it comes to our attitude’s about whether or not we are going to live or die and I recommend a ted talk by a doctor on whether the mind can heal the body from terminal illness here on UA-cam! In my early teens (during the early sixties) my Mom asked me who my favorite Hollywood starlit was and I answered "Veronica Lake". She asked me how I came to that opinion and I told her that the first time I saw a facial profile of her I was "in love". Ah, such are the fantasies of a prepubescent lad. She was a beauty with such a voice ... melted my soul. I hope that Ms. Lake is peacefully at rest.

So she would have only had radio navigation, visual cues, and celestial navigation while flying solo. You probably can't even make your way across your own state without a phone/Google maps lol.

No one knows the inner working of a family. It sounds far more plausible that her very cruel mother inflicted so much psychological trauma that she literally drove her mad. This is re-enforced by the mother discussing her mental state as though she herself had nothing to do with it.
Exactly. Veronica’s mother sounds like a narcissist that left Veronica damaged. Veronica’s behavior doesn’t sound “schizophrenic” it sounds more like complex PTSD/personality disorder (and alcoholism of course) which can both be induced by severe childhood trauma.

would come in, almost nightly, to drink alone! She would then walk back home, to her hotel! He said that she

Everyone putting such harsh veiws on her social life, however being a 16 year old being forced into very adult situations- acting, marriage, children-when other girls her age- then as well as now- would be at clibs, parties, or at least their friends house, enjoying the youth she apparently never was allowed to take part in.

This reminds me of Dorothy Lamore. She was one of the most famous actresses in the world and helped raise $millions in War Bonds.
While Hope & Crosby and the studio got rich, she was paid a few thousand a film, and when the Road series was ended she wound up working as a waitress. Hope saw her there one day and said, "Dottie, what are you doing here?" She told him she had to eat. Hope was enraged and supported her for the rest of her life.

Veronica was talented and Stunningly Beautiful. Good actress that was versatile, able to do Drama and Comedic roles. I had a great crush on her and was always keen to see her movies. By the time I started watching them her career was already over. I didn't know that as a kid. But it explained why I didn't see her any longer in newer movies. Her Face, Hair and Physique was awesome. She was one of the Hollywood Female Stars that demonstrated to me the image of what a Woman truly was. Absolutely Loved her. So sorry to hear of her challenges in life. May She Rest In Peace.

It reminds me of a movie with Ginger Rogers where the lead character pretends to be a teenager and winds up under the protection of the main male character at a military school. At one point there is a dance between the students of the Academy and a nearby girls school. EVERY ONE OF THE GIRLS is sporting the VERONICA LAKE HAIRDO. The movie is called "The Major and the Minor." I am truly sorry this lovely woman faced so much unhappiness. But she was a survivor. She was able to live a simple life.

This omits one even more bizarre turn. She moved to the UK and settled in Ipswich. She married a naval captain there in 1972 but the marriage barely lasted a year. She moved back to the US in 1973 and died the same year.

If she was schizophrenic, it was a very mild case. Possibly bipolar though I’d say she coped well in the male dominated cinema world.
Yes, I don't know if a schizophrenia diagnosis then meant the same thing as it would today. Being schizophrenic she'd hear voices speaking to her loud and clear that no one else would, and believe them to be real people. It would have been too distracting, interupting her concentration, preventing her working in films.
Schizophrenic/bipolar can fake moods and sometimes they act very normal and other times they fly of the handle so to speak!

According to her mother, she was diagnosed as schizophrenic when she was 15 y.o. People with that condition usually show symptoms in mid to late teens so it sounds about right.

This doco did not mention her metal illness until the last minute or so, which is a massive oversight. She was diagnosed with schizophrenia in 1938 at age 15. There was very little effective treatment for the condition until about the 1960s. Severe cases were instituionalised, but less severe cases like VL's were left to get through life as best they could.
Her mother was the one to level that accusation that I personally don’t believe. She was continually manipulated and controlled by her mother. I suspect there was much more going on that what we will ever know.

Even if she really was schizophrenic, that doesn't absolve her mother from her actions. I don't think Veronica wanted to be an actress. She even told her parents that at a young age. She did get a pilot's license. Maybe she would have been much happier being employed that way. But her mother pushed her into it and Veronica got sucked into the great cesspool that is Hollywood.
And like the rest of the beautiful stars of that era, she probably had to warm the casting couch.

Mental/emotional neglect, and having a schizotypal diagnosis and a sister who abandoned me and is helping my Father's 5th wife steal my inheritance from him. And all my health issues. I think I would like to know more about Veronica Lake. I'll check out her book if it's still in publication. She was beautiful & tragic. Great video as always. You made me cry. This biography really hurt. I totally find disgust for her mother who knew that she was schizophrenic yet pushed her into one of the worst occupations for someone with that diagnosis. She pushed her to be a star in Hollywood. One of the most shaky grounds to put anyone in. I feel so sorry for her.
I also hate the reporter who tracked her down when she fled Hollywood. It was as if she didn't have a right to a life outside of that place. She might have led a happy life being a waitress with no pressure of being somebody else. That reporter should be damned.
Great video! A tragic, sad, yet fascinating story. Seeing the photos from early in Veronica Lake's acting career you can see that she's very young, maybe too young. I saw her interview with Dick Cavett which is also on You Tube and Miss Lake came across as an intelligent, articulate woman. Too I think that in most of the photos from her later years she was quite attractive. --- The way Veronica Lake was found working in a hotel reminds me of Frances Farmer who went into obscurity after Hollywood. As I recall she worked in a hotel laundry and also worked in a small-town photography studio as an assistant. Eventually she was recognized and was back in the public eye, spending her final years work at an Indianapolis TV station and having her own show.
I seem to remember that her pinup photo was very popular among American servicemen during WWII. She was a “looker”.
My Dad said she was his favorite actor. He admired her craft. He would look on the tv (daily) and trying to see if the Steubenville channel was running one of her movies.

It's such a sad realization that this lovely woman was suffering at such an early age, from a later diagnosed medical condition/schitzophrenia! What an unfortunate ending for such a lovely, beautiful woman. Veronica Lake, RIP!💃🌹
She appeared to be so amazing. Such a shame Hollywood called her a bitch when there were male actors who behaved worse and were called commanding or ‘overbearing’ at worst. If she had received support and admiration that her male peers had received things would probably have been different.

I'm always surprised by how short so many of these actresses were! Many of them were so slight and well proportioned that, in the absence of other people around them for comparison, they appeared much taller.

I haven't seen to many Lake movies but what I have seen, she seemed way ahead of her time. She was a lot more contemporary in her acting than other actresses of the time.

It’s so easy to insult someone. Out of jealousy or spite. But we don’t really know what’s inside that person. What THEY are going through. Like in her situation she had a very bad psychotic ailment called Schizophrenia! If only people knew. Then no wonder. I have to give her a lot of credit for her extreme level of tenacity. To go through all of that when she did. I think she was smart to leave Hollywood. Even though she also left her family. It must have been SO severe for her to then do that. I hope she is at peace in heaven. No one is perfect. No one. God judges from our hearts. Not what comes out of our mouths. Thank GOD for that!

So sad a story. People are quick to judge people with mental health issues. They tell them "just get over it." Would you tell someone with cancer to "just get over it?" Surely not. Cancer can be seen and treated. Mental health issues can't be seen with an MRI or xray and treated, they are hidden and very hard to find the roots and treated. My we have mercy on those with mental health issues.

The only thing I ever really knew about her was she was the actress with the great long hair often covering one eye in a sexy way. I loved that she had a different look compared to other actresses of her day - her hair was great and could be considered modern and up to today’s standards.

It's just a reflection of the ludicrous expectations of the time. For a woman who went through the stress of two divorced, a serious breakdown and above all the death of a child, years of heavy alcohol use, and who was no longer wealthy and thus had to really work for a living, she looks very good.

I have a close friend who developed schizophrenia at age 19. He takes medication, but also drinks to deal with it. Lake was both talented and gorgeously beautiful.
It seems like alcohol ruined so many Hollywood stars lives. When you notice in the movies of the 40's and 50's alcohol is always offered no matter what time of day. What will ya have is the greeting at the door.

That’s no joke. My grandmother was a true society grand dame, and was born in 1896. She always wore a suit or dress - even at 98 years old - and cocktails always greeted guests at the door.
Heavy smoking too was the norm and so many were taken by heart attacks at an early age or lung cancer.
She had to change her hair when women were needed in the work force during WWII. The hair over one eye was dangerous so she created a new trend for a while.
I read her book and I love it. I remember reading she became a pilot. I have her picture in my office and since I grew up in SoCal I'd stop by Sunset BLVD and take a picture of her star - which I cut out and placed it in the picture in my office. I always thought she was pretty even later on in her years. 🤙
That's nice of you to do. I also read her book & took away that Hollywood held nothing for her & she had no regrets in her decision. What I found sad was when she passed her cremation remains went unclaimed for years at a funeral home in NY.

They over-diagnosed schizophrenia in the 30s-50s, and although I do not for a second doubt she had mental health issues, it don’t think it was schizophrenia, although her drinking could have easily been self medicating. I also would not trust her mother as a source.
