What Happened To Shelley Duvall?

  • Shelley Duvall was the 1970s actress that audiences came to know and love for her distinctive look and odd, eccentric characters. Her most famous role as Wendy Torrance in The Shining however, might have pushed her right over the edge. But there’s no question about it: The wide-eyed girl was born to be a star. Albeit, a quirky one.

He's a complete jerk. I had a friend who worked in television who attended the Emmy's and sat next to him. She nodded in greeting and he proceeded to roll is eyes and turn away from her. A voice one seat in front of her said, "don't worry , he is an asshole to everyone" loudly so everyone could hear. That voice was Judge Judy's. I loved her from that day forward , and despised him. I love Shelley Duvall. When she first became famous for "The Shining", there was not much attention on her and on young women being thrust on movie sets. One of the last interviews Shelley Duvall gave, was when she was an older lady, seemingly living out of a car; she was very kind and wonderful. She was a fragile individual. Stanley Kubrick abused her fragility for a movie. Going back to "The Shining" today, there is so more credit to her as an actress. Her kindness and innocence as Jack Torrance's wife is an incredible performance. I am sad that Shelley Duvall had to experience so much hardship.

Jeez, I actually got a little misty at the end there, after he says "... the stuff of legend," and the violins come in (14:50). It's like you realize, wow, yeah, these performances (which my generation has grown up with, and which I've almost taken for granted) really *_are_* iconic! Even if some were over the top, there was always a good reason for playing it that way. And as a result, these scenes became so unique and unforgettable. May future generations indeed continue to discover her great, great work! Rest in peace, precious Shelley.

Kubrick wasn't just hard on Shelley. He was pretty much a nightmare for anyone he worked with. He would wear actors down and make actors do hundreds of takes of the same shot to push them to an emotional breaking point. The idea was to show a person who was broken, stressed out, and in an untenable situation and record that on a camera. I guess the best way to depict a tortured soul in a movie is to actually torture someone, at least in Kubrick's mind.

The AD is responsible for general conditions of safety / well being of actors on a film set.
On the set of The Shinning that would have been a Mr. Anthony Frewin who worked on a number of Stanley Kubrick's productions. He would have known Kubrick's narcissistic, OCD and abusive behavior and failed to step in to protect Shelly Duvall.
Ms. Duvall being Jewish was yah know like connected and didn't have to put up with it. Does anyone know of any actors contract that states they can be driven into a nervous break down with over a hundred scene takes to get the desired effect?

9:00 Nomination for worst actress for her role in The Shining???
That is evidence enough for the idea that Hollywood awards are PR contests.....political in nature.
There are individuals in Hollywood who understand acting but the majority do not. Its mostly actors/actresses who exist as promoted names due to knowing the right people....doing the right favors. They are there, mostly, because of things other than acting ability. Some of them have NO acting ability but they are 10/10 attractive and the casting couch is a thing.
Shelley Duvall's performance in The Shining is the breakout performance.
No... its not Jack Nichoson. He is a great actor....although he is a character actor. He plays Jack.
Compare his role in One Flew over the Cuckoos Nest to his role as Joker in Batman.........seemingly two completely different characters but they are estimations of the same character.
Less makeup, more lines.....but Jack plays Jack. Same with Samuel Jackson. People like him....I like him....But he plays Samuel Jackson in nearly every role. People just enjoy it.
However....Duvall does not play all her roles the same. She actually acts.
Yes, I am saying that she is a better actor than Jack Nicholson. I know, I know...he's great, and I agree. But judged on acting ability with BREADTH of performance as one of those variables...she is better.
And her role in The Shining displays more acting ability than any other character.

Wow, that was really interesting and sad. It made me cry a little toward the end.
I loved Pop-eye, and I still sing "He's tall, good-lookin' and large" sometimes around the house. The Shining was
scary good, but she may have been overshadowed by the very creepy and scary Jack Nicholson. I didn't know she had been tortured on set like that.
My Mom especially loved Shelly Duvall.
I was excited hearing about her children's fairytale productions, but never got to see them. She got Joan Collins to play the wicked witch in Hansel & Gretal and I always wanted to see that, and finally did see it online. Joan Collins was uncrecognizable, but the fact that the glamorous and gorgeous Joan Collins would play an ugly old hag was wonderful casting. Collins more recently played an older woman character and they had to rely on makeup and a little prosthetics to make her look old enough. Isn't that funny? Collins isn't known for having plastic surgery.
So, it is sad that Shelly DuVall's life wasn't a happy one, but at the same time she accomplished much. It is always difficult for those with unusual personalities to get through life, especially when they think they found a niche where they belong and are celebrated, only to have that outlet losee popularity and not being able to find another outlet that is just as well received. Child actors have similar situations in life, it seems. One can't be on top all the time.
    She is resting in peace.

Congratulations on a magnificent tribute to La Duvall. I was surprised at no reports on psychiatric evaluation and treatment.
There's no doubt she was a functioning schizophrenic. The wiring of the brain is different. The famous "Actors Studio" couldn't teach her anything because what came naturally to her in acting already is exactly what the school teaches to be.
What La Duvall had can't be taught in a school. That's why she appealed to Altman, La Duvall made his movies BETTER.
Her commanding performance in The Shining is a remarkable tour de force, and Svengali Kubrick got what the movie needed... It's a historic movie with a sensational and crafty Jack Nicholson who was a complicit player with Kubrick on set.
I think La Duvall made a great contribution to cinema. You can't buy or sell what she had.... CHARISMA!!!!
