There are many situations where you wouldn't want to hook up an XLR cable. But most production companies will opt for XLR. ENG cameras typically use a short XLR cable attached to a camera mounted shotgun microphone. This is pretty much standard industry practice. You can use wireless mics if you want. In fact, I often do as they are easy to set up and convenient. But wireless mics are susceptible to interferences, especially mics that use 2.5ghz like the Rode Wireless GO. Professional wireless mics typically use radio frequencies, but they too have a number of potential issues, including interference. Of course, it's all situationaly dependent. You could even use a mic straight into the 3.5mm jack and no doubt be fine 90% of the time, but a 3.5mm jack is not as rugged as an XLR cable and are prone to breaking. XLR cables provide better audio, are safer, and are built to a higher standard. 🙂
You've given great information twice from two different videos about the S5X. you got my Sub my guy. I have the x a couple months and just started posting here on UA-cam
No mention of the 3.5mm input. That’s the other two tracks of audio! I’d have also mentioned the way to switch between channel monitoring during record. Good tips on audio placement and that the XLR module is a must have.
Yeah, a very good solution for great in camera audio. I think all the GH cameras from the GH5 support the XLR1. What is that shell you have on your camera?
Thanks, it's a protective silicone case. I try my best to keep my cams in as good shape as possible should I ever want to trade up to a new cam. You can find them on Amazon and Ebay and they typically cost between £10-£20. 🙂
Hi, audio or field recorders absolutley have their place. I use the Zoom H4n. But my personal preference is to run the mic directly into camera to save syncing in post. It used to be that DSLR/ Mirrorless cameras either had bad pre-amps or simply couldn't accept audio. Now that many can, it makes life a bit simpler to a solo shooter to mic straight to camera. I then use a seperate mic for back up. :)

You'd still go for this vs the Zoom F3 which is over a £100 cheaper to save time on the sync in post?
what if i just want to capture 2 channels and have only 2 tracks appear in post?

It will indeed, you can also use it with the S1, S5, GH4, GH5, GH6 and I'd imagine the G9II too!
