Mine shifted hard since I got it and a friend who has one told me about this issue. his was older and he said he had to take a cover off, thinking it something would be a bigger task I put it off, I found this video done in about 5mins amazing!
Was it hard to get it to shift up or down occasionally? This is what I'm going through right now. About 1/3 or 1/4 of the time it won't shift and I have to slow down and eventually it will shift.
Now that's what you call short sweet and to the point. And I just learned something new that I didn't know before so now I will be adjusting my clutch when I get my mud tires. Thanks bud.
@@MudPuppyOffroadI hope you get this message soon…adjusting the clutch now, but I can’t back the nut off the set screw. I’m starting to widen out the slot where I put the flat head screwdriver. I don’t know what to do. Please help. lol!
5000 miles on my Foreman 500 and I've never had to adjust it.. which is good since the screw is seized and for some reason Honda used a very soft metal
Not trying to roast you but saying you've never had to adjust it doesn't mean anything... unless youve actually been able to loosen the nut and check to make sure that you have one quarter turn of free play you don't know if you've had to adjust it. 99% chance it's not adjusted in the ideal range. You can unseize it with the double nut trick and I highly recommend doing it your machine will shift better
@@MudPuppyOffroad good idea with the double nut 👍. After some careful fuckaround the screw came loose. Really just needed to be cracked then was fine. Half turn out to resistance, one-quarter turn back - confirmed amount based on number of exposed threads when nut tightened. Rotella T6
Good short quick vid that's to the point and explains everything. I have a 2016 Honda 420 Rancher with the manual foot shifter and have had issues with it shifting properly especially during Winter when I use it to plow my driveway. It's been very stiff and hard to shift with the bigger tires so this vid should fix that issue. The only other issue I have is that I lost my left leg above the knee this past Winter and would love to find a manual hand shifter kit whcih would make it easier to shift instead of using my left hand whcih is dangerous. Thanks for the clutch tip.
Have 2023 520 Foreman and it sometimes wont let me go into 1st gear, I have to bend down and pull it up with my arm strength, Also while driving sometimes I try to shift into 3rd gear and it is sometimes difficult. Hopefully this video will solve that. I only have 35 hours on it, but Honda has a reputation for difficult foot shifters.
Honda does not have a reputation for difficult foot Shifters. Honda has reputation for idiot dealerships not knowing how to adjust the clutch properly during PDI. Try adjusting your clutch. It takes minutes
Great vid, thank you. What you did was decrease free play, you turned counter clockwise, correct? If you had not enough freeplay, you would turn to the right. My question, if you turn clockwise, will the set screw also meet resistance and then just 1/4 turn CCW?? Many thanks.
I wouldn't think about it as clockwise or counterclockwise because those words are stamped on the case so you can't mess it up. You should look at them. Per the manual, you turn all the way to the decrease arrow direction until resistance is felt. Then 1/4 turn in the opposite direction. After turning all the way to decrease, there is zero free play. If you left it in this condition, the clutches would eventually start to slip and wear out prematurely.
Ok, so regardless of either too much or too little freeplay, process is done as you describe. I think that’s right…? Just got the machine, all I have is the owner’s manual currently. Thank you for your time!
Is this the same for a 05 Honda Rancher ES? I adjusted my clutch exactly like this based off a different video and now when I put the bike in reverse it pulled on its own. To my recollection it’s never done this before. When riding it shifts smoothly through all 5 gears with no issues. I went to adjust again and it’s still doing it. I let it out about 3 full rotations and it still does it? I also gave it a full tube up oil change and new spark plug using all OEM parts.
I just adjusted mine and after about 1 minute of riding it, it won't move at all. Tires move when rear is lifted up and breaks are not locked up. Any suggestions? 2013 420 footshift
I have a 98 Honda foreman s 450. It's always shifted great until recently. Now it gets harder to shift after the engine gets hot. It will get so hard to shift that it sounds like it's slamming into the next gear! It shifts fine until the engine gets hot though! I've tried adjusting the clutch exactly as you show in the video. What's wrong with my clutch! Am I doing something wrong? Thank you for your videos and help!
That's a pretty old machine. probably need to pull the clutch cover and inspect everything. But that symptom can be caused by too much clutch free play. You could try tightening it up. Disk clutches could also be stuck
And when u say u turn it and u get resistance….. like should it free turn pretty much then come to a stop or get hard to turn? I’d man. Mine will turn now but it doesn’t go easily . I feel resistance the entire turn
Any suggestions for Honda foreman 2023 efo that’s hard to start when it’s just a little cold. Cranks 10-12 times before starting. Always did it. Dealer no help.
Thanks for the video! I notice that from a cold start when I begin to shift through the gears, that it sometimes gets hung up in 2, 3, or 4 gear and won’t shift. Once it’s warmed up the problem goes away. I only run 26 inch Terracross tires on 14 inch wheels (not big heavy mud tires). Do you think this could be the same clutch issue? I just found this video, but I’m going to check my free play tomorrow on the shift lever.
I was wondering the same thing, mine was seized and i finally have it moving freely, not sure the if tension that i felt when backing it off was from being gunked up with rust or the “slight tension” your supposed to feel. Hopefully it’s adjusted correctly
Probably because it seized up from never being greased or adjusted before LOL. The way to unseason is to put two nuts on there and break it loose spraying penetrating oil helps you can also heat up the cover a little bit in the local area with a small torch or heat gun
@Mud Puppy thank you for the heads. Up. It's a 2022 so I figured I was doing something wrong. I'll try the two nuts trick I like the way that sounds. I already sprayed it with wd40. I appreciate the quick response

Someone used to make a bolt-on suicide shifter They called it
We've always just welded on a piece of pipe and stuck a screwdriver in the top of it
You do want to keep it as light and short as possible. So the weight of the shifter extension doesn't knock it out of gear

Is this why my fourwheeler since day one has always been hard to shift and what happens if I decrease it too much

So what if when u loosen the nut and the r screw doesn’t want to turn at all?
You need to pull the cover remove the adjuster and properly grease it
Must be in a different place on my 05 foreman 500. Can't find it

Yes, not dct though
Is on Honda 300?
is this the same with the electric models
Yes this is the same for an electric shift model. But not a DCT. Aka ES yes FA nk

Back the nut off just past the adjustment screw, apply heat, then penetrating oil and tap that nut with a small hammer. It worked for me
Does it have to be in gear or in neutral when you do this or does it matter?
Neutral is a good idea it shouldn't matter if your system is working properly
does this go for honda 420 electric shift as well?
Yes
