    Edit: MAP 25 secs in has opposite colors for Sweden and Prussia :(
    Happy July 4th everyone! In this video I wanted to focus a little deeper on the causes of the revolution rather than just “taxation without representation” or “Freedom!” or “they where greedy or they where tyrants” those make great taglines and have some truth to them, but I believe that the financial strain (from bankers etc…) on both the colonial and British governments made war not quite inevitable but highly probable. Let me know what you think!

      Ahmed
      Even in the 1700's they knew they were incorrectly labeled as Indians, however, the term had become ubiquitous. Today in America...Indian reservations are still called Indian reservations(on official signs and labels)...they are referred to as Indian tribes...I know many and had never met one that refers to themselves as "indigenous American"...native American I have heard but that is rarely used outside of universities, evening news(maybe)
      ...Indian is a lot quicker and easy to say that the other labels
      History books still call it the "French and Indian war"
      I think the main group offended are white professors in New York and SF

    I like that you pointed out the issue of payment of taxes and currency. This is a factor that is generally overlooked by most people. Colonists didn't really have an issue paying taxes, but rather the Crown had a problem with what they did (or didn't) have to pay with.

    An important detail left out is that the spark that ignited the revolution was in April 19th 1775 when the British attempted to confiscate arms from the colonists at Concord.

    A good video but it does miss some key points. For example: the limiting of westward expansion or the concessions made to French Catholics.
    The question of whether it was a “just” war is tied up with the question of whether it was a “necessary” war.
    I appreciate it has become pretty central to the national mythos but I do not think it was necessary. I think the issues could have been resolved without that escalation and consequent waste of blood and treasure. So no, I don’t think it was a ‘just war’, no matter how valid some of the complaints were.

    • @baneofbanes
      @baneofbanes 6 років тому +1

      Scott Linsley By your definition there’s no such thing as a just war.

    • @scott2452
      @scott2452 6 років тому +3

      I wouldn’t describe myself as a ‘pacifist’ as I appreciate war is sometimes a necessary last resort.
      Take two wars from the last century: WW2 and the Korean War. In both cases diplomatic options were reasonably exhausted. In both, a totalitarian regime was aggressively expanding at the cost of millions of lives. The costs in lives, freedom and wealth of NOT going to war were pretty high.
      In the War of Independence on the other hand I think diplomatic options were not exhausted. The UK was not a totalitarian regime. Far more lives and and wealth was lost in gaining independence than continuing the status quo.
      There is always uncertainty when trying to work out ‘what might have been’. Judging from the experience of Canada, Australia and New Zealand though War wasn’t necessary to get the freedoms either.

    • @gregrobinette8620
      @gregrobinette8620 Рік тому

      @@baneofbanes believe it or not, necessary wars do exist. The War of Independence is not that, as it was people god did not place there, fighting the natives & their nation for protecting natives, & also fighting their nation for being taxed for a war they started. A necessary war would be the Allies in WW2, becuz Hitler was a mad man murdering many non-Deutsch ethnics while expanding to their lands.

  • @alanl.4252

    Looking back at history, I do feel the war was rather petty to begin with. Both sides were at fault to a degree, on one side Britain needed a way to minimize its debt and what better way than through taxes. After all they did fight a war to protect the colonies, a war that the colonists triggered themselves by trespassing French territory.
    On the other hand, the colonists who were subjects of the Crown should've had representation in the parliament, just seems like common sense.
    Also it's not like all of the colonists wanted freedom, a good chunk were still loyal to Britain, had Britain played her cards differently they might have been able to turn public opinion against the rebels, but instead of punishing only Boston they punished all of the colonies.
    Great video as always!

    • @AlexRodriguez-oo9yu
      @AlexRodriguez-oo9yu 6 років тому +5

      Very true. Only about 40% of colonists were actually patriot. The rest were loyalists or simply not dumb enough to fight the most powerful nation in (then) human history
      The British also failed to take advantage of the already divided colonies. Instead, they passed the Intolerable Acts and Stamp Act which unified the colonies. This was very important becuase the Middle Colonies were trading colonies which were reliant on the protection of the British navy, and the southern colonies relied to Britian as an importer of raw materials. Wouldve been quite easy to gain support from the southern/middle colonies against the patriot northeast

If not for the unorthodox Warefare used by the Militias which Britain was not used to and which buyed time to strike up a deal with France, Britain may very well have won the War! The British gambled on the South and no Crown Loving fan showed up!

    From the viewpoint of 3rd parties (i.e. not the English or Americans) was this a "just war"?
    Did the American first peoples consider this a just war? How about the Spanish?
    A "just war" is moreoft a relative concept, tied up with self identity more than some universal good.

    • @AlexRodriguez-oo9yu
      @AlexRodriguez-oo9yu 6 років тому +1

      Mark Bloom I personally believe there is universal good in the ideals the founders sought after. Life, liberty, and the freedom to pursue personal happiness seem so basic, so fundamental nowadays, but back then they were truly novel concepts that inspired other nations to revolt against unfair leadership. If it were just "self identity" I don't think the revolution would've brought forth such a incredible change in thinking among those subject to government's rule

      As a British Man I still see the War as just... but I am also not a Royalist in the Slightist! Thank God they have no real power left here! I have and always will be a Republicanist if you want to call me anything. However I understand the Monarch benefits the British Tourist Economy now so that is fine enough! However the US War of Independence imo was just after Britain started getting involved within their personal lives. Many had lived a life of happiness next thing they are having to house British Troops and in some cases made homeless because of it! America also were to blaim on some things but all in all... I think the power of a Nation will always lie with its People! If the People feel they are being oppressed... it is the People who should rise up and fight for one another and their Ideals... but only if those Ideals are to make Men Free and give liberties to all! Obviously the WoI gave no freedom to slaves but their was another conflict which took over 1 Million American lives to resolve the issue!

    The American Revolution was radical for its time in several aspects, especially in actions stemming from the lower classes of American society like Shays' Rebellion, but it was largely guided by the capitalist class in America who wanted to expand into Indian territory. Many atrocities were committed against Native Americans like the Gnadenhutten massacre and not to mention the vicious expansionism that happened right after the war and drafting of the US Constitution.

    • @gregrobinette8620

  • @sebastianmaharg
    @sebastianmaharg 6 років тому +1

    Nice summing up of things. Well done. I wonder, however, why some folks, such as yourself, still insist on using the term "Revolutionary War"? "Revolutionary" how? A more correct term would either be (as you have it in your title) the "American Revolution" or "American War of Independence."

    • @AlexRodriguez-oo9yu
      @AlexRodriguez-oo9yu 6 років тому +2

      Revolutionary as in a revolution. It was the only revolution in American history so we just refer to it as THE revolutionary war. It's the same reason we call the American Civil War of the 1860s just "the Civil War" since it was the only civil war in american history. When we refer to the French Revolution, we call it the french revolution. I would be curious to know what the french call it 🤔

    • @sebastianmaharg
      @sebastianmaharg 6 років тому

      Alex Rodriguez That's an amazingly US-centric response. If you just say "the civil war" to anyone around the world, they'll scratch their chin and ask "which one? The Spanish? The English? the American?" So that distinction doesn't hold up. The same goes for "Revolutionary war." It's a silly term because it's misleading. Revolutionary in what way exactly? Yes, it was a revolution, it was a war of Independence. So just call it that, like everyone else refers to their own revolutions or wars of independence. To answer your question, the French just refer to their revolution as "the revolution" as in Spain they refer to their civil war just as as "the civil war" or the war against Napoleon as "the war of Independence."

    • @AlexRodriguez-oo9yu
      @AlexRodriguez-oo9yu 6 років тому +3

      Sebastian Maharg It should be painfully *obvious* that if i was talking to a european I would call it the "american civil war." Im not dense. All im saying is that in the context of speaking to an american or about american history, its redundant (to the point of being insulting to the listener's intelligence) to call it the "american" civil war if we're already talking about america
      you said it yourself, the spanish refer to their own civil war as just "the civil war." we do the same thing.
      And don't give me this pompous "US centric" nonsense. Have some respect as I have given you. I'm not some dimwit, culturally deprived, provincial hick, so cut it with the arrogance

    • @sebastianmaharg
      @sebastianmaharg 6 років тому +1

      Alex, first of all, pardon me if I came across as pompous. I didn't mean to imply you're ignorant in the least about the subject matter. (I'm American too, incidentally). The only thing I'm trying to get a across is that the generic term "Revolutionary" seems kind of vague, by definition. That's why I go back to the "American Revolution" or "War of Independence" as being a bit more precise. That said, if people in the States start talking about "the Revolution", full stop, a lot of people would think it's about Prince's backing band. Joking aside, point taken. Have a good one!

    Why would a group of people an ocean away, culturally different from the overlord, need to pay taxes to pay for a war that they never asked for. They had no say in the government and were brutally shutdown when they wanted it. If that isn't tyranny then I don't know what is. Why should a poor quaker farmer in Pennsylvania who fled England because his family members were murdered and his community destroyed pay a tax for a war of conquest? Maybe if Colonials were treated like real citizens they wouldn't of wanted indpendence. Some of you British folk call it treason day. Its funny you say that because you are one of the great supressors of the world. It is hard not to find a part of the world you did not loot economically. The violence in the middle east is your fault because you thought straight lines were cool and ignored ethnic and religious groups locations. I can't see how any group would want to live in an empire where they are second class citizens. When the Americans broke away you did it to the Indians in India. You weren't a democracy or even a republic, you were an oligarch-monarchy. What group of people wants to be involved with a political system they don't have a say in. Right now, your government throws people in jail for saying something. Britian has a history of attacking democracy and empowered people. It is the real reason you went after Napoleon like he was Satan. Anyway, you shouldn't talk so much crap on the US becoming free. Because that is the same country that bankrolled you in both World Wars and came to your aid when when things were bleak. You should be acknowledging that we are reconcilled and its over. And most of all glad that the monarchy has no more power. Because when I eat my BBQ today, I'm going to remember the just cause to not be under the thumb of some german inbred who lost his mind every once in awhile.

      Lorem_64 What ridiculousness, it did not cost the British anything to fight in the Ohio River valley. They used colonials and natives to fight there and barely used any regulars. Furthermore dont try to write it off like the crown didnt want ohio. Everyone did, and there was other theatres of war during the conflict that tied up much more resources. Besides, the British wanted the French colonies and they took them AKA Quebec. It costs nothing to let poor farmers settle wilderness in ohio. British parliament never let them have representation and the King didn't treat them like regular subjects. Tell me this, would you want to participate in a political system you don't have a say or voice in? I sure wouldn't pay for a dinner I was forced to eat.
      One other thing, the British and French were constantly fighting one another. The ohio valley was just the excuse to continue the rivalry.

    • @asuka7309
      @asuka7309 6 років тому

      Asuka-san If your the "overlord" your responsibility is nearly total. Diplomacy was handled by Parliament and the King. Are you really going to say that the British and French weren't going to fight eventually during this time period? They had succession disputes, the race to India, competition in the Carribean. It's endless, I'm not blaming them like you blame a kid who stole a cookie but to imagine the coloinists had some kind of nucleus deciding war and to want to take the Ohio valley is far from reality.

      I disagree, it had more to do with the prohibition on colonial scrip than any taxation on paper sugar or tea...that is what led to high unemployment and a bad economy. Most colonials did not have access to the Spanish silver to pay the tax...and if you had your life savings in colonial scrip it became near worthless( all the veterans of the French and Indian war were paid in colonial scrip) many of them led the revolution.
      If they could have paid the tax in colonial scrip there would most likely not have been a war.

    We British were quite brutal to our colonies and frankly that caused the downfall of empire. Had measures been taken as history progressed that allowed self determination by colonies but with a central political authority (like federal and state law for example), elected together by the colonies, I genuinely believe the combined economic and political power would have created a great deal of benefit for all.

      British were a great Empire. You should be proud. Everyone does bad things, no one is perfect & no nation or Empire has ever done everything right. Part of being human is being flawed but the definition of flawed depends on those that define it. When your on top there will always be those that shame you to try & knock you off. They are just trying to be on top themselves. Show me what Britain did wring & ill show you things that every nation did wrong. Dont fall for that stuff.

      Nah, the US wouldve happened anyway, you cant appeal to crazy rebels, they want the power & the land for whatever, the British Empire trying its best wouldve ended the same.

      Conquest was pursued by all of the world. Ghenghis Khan may have been a threat had he been born in the 19th century. Ha ha. When you go back to BC leading up to this time period, it gives a little more understanding. What were they study about the history prior to them?

    If you waited another century or so, we would have GIVEN you your independence, just like Canada, Australia, New Zealand et al have now! You fought that war because some wealthy businessmen in the thirteen colonies riled the populace and pointed them at Britain. You fought that war not for freedom, but for wealthy people who wanted more power.

    • @gregrobinette8620

      Yes, the War for Independence was not a liberal one, but a radical one for oppressors to colonize. I thought that was obvious lol.

      In this hypothetical scenario, the us would have never expanded past the Appalachian mountains as Great Britain had a treaty with Native Americans.

    Puritan colonists wanted to build an empire in North America by whipping out all the Indians, the British prevented it because a Calvinist American empire will threat Anglican British Empire.

      It's not a white vs colored thing. The whole idea of race is a 19th century theory that's since been proven incorrect following the discovery of DNA, modern genome sequencing. We know race doesn't exist and we've known that for decades yet people on the far left (and others) continue to push a centuries old theory.
      The issue is cultural. The culture of many non western nations is inferior imo to that of western culture. Idgaf what clothes you wear or what language you speak, I'm talking more about intrinsic values such as liberty and freedom of expression.
      People on the right need to reform their arguement. The problem isn't skin color. Skin color is no more important than eye color or height. It's culture
