Walt Disney Studios: Disney's Worst Theme Park

  • Walt Disney Studios opened at Disneyland Paris in 2002. The park was originally intended to be MGM Studios Europe, a sister park of what is now Hollywood Studios at Walt Disney World in Florida. However, the failure of Euro Disneyland the decade prior, saw numerous cut backs restrict what the park was originally intended to be and when Walt Disney Studios finally opened, it was nowhere near what many had hoped it would be. In this video I look at the original design for Walt Disney Studios park, what went wrong, and the exciting future plans to relinquish its reputation as Disney's Worst Theme Park ever.

Yeah… I remember visiting it some months after it opened and I remember being disappointed by how little stuff to do there was, especially since some of them were basically “experiences” that didn’t justify the long lines. When I came back years later some of the issues were finally fixed, but ironically this exposed many of the original attractions’ flaws, especially the special effects ride which was still a relict of early 2000s cinema

I visited Disney Studios earlier this year. It's clearly small, and the attractions are seemingly scattered all over the place with no rhyme or reason, but it's still a lot of fun. It was also exciting to see the progress they've been making on the new Frozen land, and the mini-France section with the Ratatouille attraction was fun to walk through. It's obvious that the Imagineers in charge of the park are doing the best they can to make it as good as possible, even if it's just a little at a time.

The second park also had to be opened because of the contract that Disney had signed with the French State. If this area were not developed, the land would belong back to France. For example, there is another area waiting for development: the so-called 3rd theme park. It is located near the golf course. There is still some time before the French State will reclaim this area, but there may be some action around it. Until now, nothing is known about the theme, offer, etc, as far as the 3rd park is concerned.
I myself was in the Walt Disney Studio Park a few months ago and I still think it's a park that you did in half a day. The Crush'n Coaster has far too little capacity, the rebranding of the Studio Tram Tour is really low-budget and the Avengers Assemble: Flight Force rollercoaster is mainly a dark hall with some flashes of light. A mockery of what you used to get. In addition, you still have the feeling that there is no cohesion in the whole. The themed areas seem to have nothing to do with each other. And oh yes; if you want to catch a show, you should queue at least more than an hour in advance in an area where you can't sit anywhere (except on the floor).

The ground dug up for the Studios lake is being used for a berm on the far side of the resort, where there's room for the third (and even fourth) park. That's been a very curious development to me. It doesn't mean they'll announce the third gate anytime soon, but it makes you wonder.
Also, I agree capacity is a huge problem at Disneyland Paris. They really need more rides. I was there in October, outside vacations and during the week and the parks were packed! The nighttime castle show was even very uncomfortable to me, with all those people packed together like sardines.

I was at DLP last month and I had heard about the reputation of Disney Studios. After having gone there, I can say that you are absolutely right about it being a hybrid of the newer, higher-quality attractions and the original, low-budget ones. For example, there's the new show that they have at the theatre called Mickey and the Magician which is a must-see if you are ever going to go because the costumes and special effects are phenomenal! However, there's still Flying Carpets over Agrabah which is now randomly stuck in the middle of Pixar Pavillion; I think that they should move it to Adventureland. Two things that I think should be done as part of the expansion are build an actual, working Radiator Springs instead of the facades that are there now and in addition to improving Studio 1, give the park a version of the Great Movie Ride! It was my favorite ride at Hollywood Studios and I'm certain lots of fellow Disney fans miss it as much as I do! So, bringing back a defunct, beloved attraction would certainly give the park a lot of fanfare!

I know Euro Disneyland was initially a ton of money put in with comparably little returned, but I feel like too often they've swung too far the other way for too long and done damage to their parks brand. Rather than invest in their ideas, they cut the fudge out of their budgets - and then spent butt tons down the road to try and salvage them. California Adventure, Disney Studios, Galaxy's Edge, Avengers Campus - all originally much grander and more exciting in practice, all reduced heavily by budget cuts and in need of huge investments later on to redeem them. California Adventure seems to have turned things around. Disney Studio is trying. I just wish they would have matched their original visions out the gate and not needed scrambling to try and improve them.

    Little known fact:
The second generation ToT ride system was designed for WDS and to be themed to 'Who Framed Roger Rabbit'.
After the failure of Disney's California Adventure in 2001, it was quickly decided to make use of the ride system redesign, once again use 'The Twilight Zone' concept and open these in both parks. The WFRR drop ride was also to be sited roughly where Crush's Coaster stands today, rather than the Production Courtyard location.

I went when it was still newish in 2004. Me and my brother had just gone to the California Disneyland in 2003 so we were comparing the two. The vibe between America and Paris was like night and day. We enjoyed the visit but the Studios just seemed odd that they were trying to pretend that they made movies there. The backlot tour didn't show any hustle and bustle of a movie in progress. You go past a costume department and you're left wondering 'why do they keep pretending they make movies here?' I remember the tour said 'you never know who'll you bump into at Disneyland Studios' and my brother said 'no one famous that's for sure.'

The Moteurs stunt arena isn't were the Star Wars land is supposed to go. You can still see the arena on the concept art and it is very clear it's not in the same area if you look at the top down plans.
There is however something curious going on with the stunt arena. When you are in Avengers Campus and stand on the Avengers "A" and look behind the Quinjet, you will see scaffolding covered with tarps that is supposed to look like a Campus building. I have the hope this is supposed to be the multiverse darkride show building that's already announced for California.
The Cars Tram Tour also has me theorising. Looking from above it's a maybe surprisingly big piece of land between Frozen and Ratatouille. I think they could fit a copy of California's Cars land here. It also makes sense, as it would be part of Worlds of Pixar and the mountain range could be Cars themed on one side and Frozen themed on the other.
Now some interesting stuff I heard through the grapevine. The rumour is that in or around April some big announcements are going to be made and that 2028 is going to be a big year for the resort. Apparently America Imagineers have been spotted as well as film crews. There's been a lot of talk what will be next after Frozen. Star Wars land has gone from announced to maybe cancelled to being about certain again. An Avatar land is said to also be considered. And there are persistent rumours about a land based on The Lion King. There's room for all of them. Furthermore, the Flying Carpets are heavily rumoured to be demolished, rethemed or moved to Adventureland next door. It's clear something has to happen with it, as it's in the middle of Worlds of Pixar and the Aladdin theme doesn't make sense anymore. Crush's Coaster next to it is said to be getting an exterior rethemed into something similar like the Finding Nemo simulator ride at Tokyo DisneySea. Some say the Carpets will move to make room for extra queueing.
Entrance area Studio 1 is said to be closing for a Mickey Mouse based refurbishment in the coming months. It'll be very interesting what will happen here. The Cast Members recently had a diner party in Studio 1, which had the distinct feeling of a going away party.
Whatever happens, I hope the Disneyland Park will finally get a whole new, additional ride. Because in 2025 it will be 30 years since Space Mountain! Meanwhile, dare we hope for that third gate by 2036?

I agree that the best part of that park now is the Ratatouille area, I think that it is really well done, especially considering the location with it being based in Paris itself. It feels like they put the most effort into it to make the area itself attractive. I was there the other day for the first time (never been to any Disney park before) and am thankful I went there first before the main Disney park (we wanted to see the light show in the evening, so for us that made sense to do that first). The rides themselves I liked, just the outside areas felt a bit lacklustre. Crush’s Coaster, the Tower of Terror and Ratatouille were all great.
Now I am praying that they manage to sort out the Eurostar and Disneyland Paris. For those that don’t know, there used to be a direct train from England to Disneyland Paris but that has now been stopped. Excellent video! You have a new subscriber!
I'm wondering what's to become of Studios Park now that it's no longer focusing on the theme of movie-making or Hollywood. Although the changes will no doubt be overall positive, I'm worried that the park will run into the "Epcot Problem" of deviating too strongly from its original theme by becoming progressively more focused on IPs which don't serve the park's original vision.
Disney has run into a theming problem more generally over the years, as park areas and hotels which previously styled themselves around well-executed broad concepts (such as "The Wild West") become overlaid with brand names and merchandisable characters (such as Woody from Toy Story). These changes seem to have been met negatively by guests who find such overtly-branded theming tacky and immersion-breaking, and who miss the classic escapism and nostalgia of the original aesthetic.
I'm not sure quite how to end this ramble, but i hope anyone reading got something out of it. Either way, I'm eager to go back to Disneyland Paris for the first time in over a decade, so i very much invested in the changes being made to the entire campus. :)

Seriously!! It was one of the first “grown-up” movies that I remember watching, so on top of being freaking awesome, it has a lot of sentimental value for me. And since it was the first thing that I saw Christian Bale and Matthew McConaughey in, it was an epic first impression of McConaughey. 🔥

I was there two weeks ago. I totally agreed with your thoughts about the studio one walkway. I feel that you are supposed to have a bit of interests atound you, maybe stop for a food place. But in reality you just have a type of automatic tunnelvision moving through the entire area. They really need to do somethingwith it...

It may be a controversial opinion, but I actually LOVE Studio 1 and it's faux Hollywood facades. The first time I went, I didn't know that's what was inside, and I was amazed. I actually love facades and things that are "fake" and meant to be fake. When you walk behind the facades, you see the plywood they are made from, and that's completely on purpose. I really enjoy that. The biggest issue with Hollywood Studios (Orlando) and even DCA's Hollywood area, is if you are getting rid of the studio aspect and making things more "real" and immersive, then the areas that are obviously "fake on purpose" are now out of place.

if you want to see a real movie studio in europe... there is the Bavaria Filmstadt in Germany... it is not that big, but it has real movie set pieces and it belongs to the Bavaria Studios.
There are also famous set pieces, for example: "The NeverEnding Story" and "Das Boot"
It's nothing as glorious as a full blown disney amusement park, but it's still interesting to take a tour.
If you are more on the themepark track, there are also many themeparks, for example:
    "Gardaland"-Italy, "Alton Towers"-UK, "Phantasialand"-Germany, "Movie Park"-Germany, "Tivoli Gardens"-Denmark, "Europa-Park"-Germany, "Efteling"-Netherlands, "PortAventura"-Spain, "Tibidabo Amusement Park"-Spain, "LEGOLAND"-UK and many more...

Oh wow this is so interesting! I've only been to Disneyland once when i was 3, so around 2007, and as a result have VERY few memories of it.
But what i do remember was the "cul de sac" that you mentioned, thought i wrongly remembered the flying carpet ride as being dumbo instead. I remember thinking that the park looked pretty boring and not trying any ride, wrongly assuming that the studio was just a cinema. My parents and i assumed that it was pretty new and still in construction, learning that it's been like that since the 90s was really shocking lol
Learning that tower of terror, one of the attraction that i would really like to do one day, was added just a bit after we went is a bit frustrating thought
I hope i can go back one day and see all those additions in person

I've been to Disneyland Paris three times (2001, 2003 and 2005) and stopped twice at the Walt Disney Studios park. I would have to agree with the sentiment about it being the worst Disney park in the world. The Disneyland Paris park I found to be beautiful and charming. I loved the castle, Phantom Manor, Big Thunder, Pirates, all of Fantasyland, Space Mountain and Main Street. At the Studio during the times I was there it wasn't even worth a half a day. I enjoyed Cinemagic and perhaps Rockin' Rollercoaster, but nothing else was worth the time. I always told everyone who said they wanted to stop at Disneyland Paris, not to bother with the Studio park, it wasn't worth the time or money. I would like to visit though again after Arendale is done and see the changes.

The only thing I would argue against that the rides itself are fun, it is just the environments that are a bit boring. The Tower of Terror and Crush’s Coaster are fun, plus the Ratatouille area (the ride and the restaurant) is interesting. It feels like the Ratatouille area had the most put into it, if I’m honest. I’m not sure if it is because they had to due to it being based in Paris and so they had to make it look fairly authentic or what.

I grew up in Orlando + worked a bit for the parks, and now I live in Paris and whew... it is certainly something different. The last time I was there was to go to the Marne-La-Vallée Chessy train station (not doing that again, the advantage of train stations are that they're IN the city, but this felt like going to an airport with the long commute). I'm still not entirely sure who the park's even for... If you're a tourist with only x days in Paris - a city with a million things to do - do you really want to spend an entire day going to a theme park? If it's just for the roller coasters, then many visitors from countries like the U.K., U.S., and Germany already come from places with good theme parks that are much closer. And for the locals, I can maybe see it, but it kinda just feels tacky. If it's for the locals, then the Ratatouille pavilion's success is funny since its theming is essentially a mockup of the city you're in.
Why pay a bunch to walk through a fake version of Paris and spend 30 euros per meal at a fake nice restaurant when you can... do that in real life? Unless you live in the east close to an RER A station, it is almost always faster to just to go to the city center than to Disney

I think Cinémagique was the most interesting attraction in the park, not moteurs action. Cinémagique was so unique and well made, and it fitted the theme perfectly. I don't get why they removed it (esp to not really reolace it with anything) it could have just been updated with newer movies.) The best ride is definitly ToT, which has now several different storylines. The main issue the park has right now is the theming...we have marvel, frozen, pixar, it doesn't really make any sense. And there's barely any element of storyteling. And if you don't wait 2h at crush, you can still visit the park in like 4 hours.

The premise behind a Disney-branded movie studio theme park has always been inherently flawed.
They built their original theme parks around the idea of “making magic real” … in other words, of wrapping clever illusions in such great storytelling that participants willingly suspend their disbelief. The same premise as matinée moviemaking, basically.
So how does a movie studio theme park *premised around exposing the reality behind storytelling and illusion* fit into their other parks’ overarching idea of suspending our disbelief?
This history of Disney’s studio theme park in France is excellent! The company’s post’-70s focus on maximizing profits and pleasing shareholders, even when that means betraying their original mission, is what will finally undo them.
But I’d go further and say that, when it comes to studio-themed parks, regardless of how poorly the bean-counters executed the idea, it was the half-baked idea itself which doomed the French park - AND its Florida predecessor - to failure.

With those expansions they are getting a version of Smuggler's Run (instead of the better ride in Rise of the Resistance) and a Frozen ride that is going to be a copy of Epcot's version of the ride. Honestly they should have created a brand new ride for the Frozen themed area along the lines of the new Beauty and the Beast attraction that was added in Japan.

That was a great video and so accurate. I've been to Disneyland Paris 3 times but only went to Walt Disney Studios once in 2015. I was so disappointed and confused. It just felt so outdated and abandoned. Like you said the rides and attractions just seemed like the cheapest laziest stuff thrown together. There was no real theming for the most part. A ride based on Armageddon over a decade after that film came out. It wasn't even like Universal's Waterworld show because at least that was interesting and fun so you forget that it's based on a film mot people don't remember. And things like Reign of Fire and Dinotopia being the main attractions on the tram tour just meant I had a couple of things to google when I got off the ride.
There were a few good things like Animagique and Cinemagique. I'm sad that those 2 are gone now. But I was so happy to hear the Disney took over a big percentage of the park's ownership and announced they'd be investing that much money into it. I want to go back to see how it is but I also want to wait until all the new things have been added in like Frozen and Star Wars.

4:14 It actually was not the rebranding.
I remember as a European going to Disney World as a kid and being completely disappointed. I expected more exciting rides and more stuff to do - after all it was the biggest park in the world. However when I compared it to my local park in Europe the main difference was just more use of space, much more food and more shops. The whole concept of Disney in America - the houses from the European fairytales, the parades, the shops, simply did not sell well in Europe as Europeans liked the more ride focussed and more compact parks. Also the bad European weather usually only allows seasonal parks - with the excpetion of maybe Spain and Italy. Europeans are also far less accepting of wait times at attractions.
Disneyland Paris began to turn around exactly after trying to approach this concept. More rides, more adapted theming and generally less food and shop centric. More indoor rides (bad weather). They did that after visiting successful parks in Europe like Europapark, Efteling, Tivoli, etc. It's insane that they did not do this before. Even the decision for Paris was weird as very few tourists that go to Paris want to stay in hotels in Disneyland basically an hour away from Paris when you have such an interesting city nearby. I know they also considered England and the Ruhr-Valley in Germany. Both would have likely been better choices, not least of all because it was forseeable that the Parisians would dislike the park.

I've been there in 2019 and again in 2023. It's definitely better, but still a half day park. I figured the Avengers roller coaster would be yet another terrible IP overlay, but have to say, it's quite good. At this point I think it's better than the quite horrible overlay to Space Mountain next door. Space Mountain would be so much better w/o that out-of-place Star Wars overlay, so probably part of the reason I think the Avengers ride is better. It's genuinely good and well themed. It doesn't feel cheap and feels like it was built that way all along. Crush's coaster breaks often so two visits I couldn't experience it. The park has become better, but still not more than a half day experience. At some points of the year, it's open from 10-4 which is quite telling of the attendance.
