On this occasion, the members of the group provide us with invaluable information about the song and its lyrics. The lyrics for this piece are mainly taken from bracteates: golden, circular coins or amulets found in Northern Europe that date from the 4th to 7th centuries CE. They are often fitted with a decorated rim and loop, which indicates that they were meant to be worn and perhaps provide protection, fulfil wishes or for divination. The bracteates feature a very significant iconography influenced by Roman coinage. They were predominantly made from Roman gold, which was given to the North Germanic peoples as peace money. In Anoana, the listener has the chance to delve into a collection of likely encoded spells from the Migration Period and get a touch of magic from the Dark Ages. The intention of the piece is to playfully reconnect to an incantational language of a period where the North was richer in gold than any other region. Our forefathers presumably enjoyed a time of great prosperity and it may make us rethink how dark these ages real. I saw Heilung live at Tuska festival here in Helsinki little over a week ago, and I was not prepared! It was captivating and magical, not really a concert, but performance art with beautiful soundscapes. And the meanest and loudest bass drums of the entire 3 day metal festival - that's saying something, I think 😆
Heilung means healing Anoana mean spirit or guardian of the land. The language was proto norse very similar to gaelic, if your ears pick up on familiar bits. They speak for our mother and you hear mother earth calling out in their music, you feel her in your heart. You may cry because you have missed that feeling for a long time deep in your spirit and in your blood. Thx great reaction check our Norupo from Heilung
In scandinavian mythology, we have the Æsir which is the plural form of “âss”. This is a Norse word that derived from an earlier proto-Nordic word “*ansuR” which is derived from an older proto-Nordic word “*ansuz”. This can be traced back to the root words *and-/ans- which translate as “spirit.” Also seen in Norse as önd. Hope this helps in the translation and explaining the root words of old Norse language. There are many levels of Norse language and Heilung appears to be taking from an older proto-Indo-European scheme. ~200AD Roman Empire age
When I saw them live in Atlanta, I was blown away. I kept waiting for an intermission. They just kept going. It was beautiful and intense, and the drums were driving so hard I felt like they rearranged my soul. If you ever get the chance, go see them live, do it. An absolute experience. Absolute magic.
Came back because I forgot to mention that they performed at the Red Rocks Amphitheater in Colorado last year in partnership with the local Navajo tribe. After you experience Hamrer Hippyer via their Lifa ceremony, I HIGHLY recommend checking out the footage of them doing the same song at Red Rocks. THAT is a special type of emotional
Heilung is one of my favorite groups. They don't put on concerts, but ceremonies! I highly recommend checking out any song from their Lifa concert a few years ago. "In Maidjan," "Alfadhirhaiti," and "Hamrer Hippyer" are my favorites and move me the most
the language is a mix of ancient Germanic languages that mainly includes the old Scandinavian and partly old German languages, since the Germans and Scandinavians are closely related 🙂 they have/had a very similar culture and the same gods with small differences. the 3 Members of Heilung are from Norway, Denmark and Germany 👍 the best trio to create this wonderful music Greetings and great reaction! 😉
What a Song!!!! Thank you for this Catheryn 🥰 This gives me Shaman Monk vibes for sure. This was absolutely incredible and has given me another rabbit hole to explore. As usual Brother, great reaction. You react to music in much the same way as I do. I'm very empathetic when it comes to music, it just does something emotionally to me. I can tear up to Tatiana Shmayluk's vocals just because she is soooo damn talented, and I feel so grateful that she shares her talent with us despite her struggles with being an introvert and the pain and strife she deals with on a daily basis due to Ukraines constant state of war since 2014. I got the same type of feeling from this song and am looking forward to more reactions of this band.
The high pitched singing in the midpoint of the song is what is called Kulning which is an ancient herding call that was done by Nordic/Scandinavian women calling in the herds of cows and sheep and other livestock from distances to come in.
Loved your reaction! Thank you Chief for reacting to that! Yes it works great with a mead and fire pit! Definitely try their live version of Krigsgaldr!
This is my new favorite from Heilung. But there is not a song they have performed that has not moved me on a deep spiritual or perhaps primal level. It's hard to explain it, to me it reaches to and captivates the soul. I love how the base is like a heart beat that just calls to you. I wish I had better words to explain it. They draw me in making me wish I was born in a different time and place. They are incredible.
Beautiful... I once heard from a local that deer are very special in Scandinavia. They say that they have been cherished as a guardian god of children and prosperity. ・・・・ The spiritual culture that all people cherish and coexist together. I was fascinated by this spiritual culture. What we should cherish the most now...
I woulda recommended heilung in maidjan live ua-cam.com/users/results?search_query=heilung+in+maidjan tho its pretty long- its the type of music you loose yourself into- very primal and powerful.
It's not only meeee! Can't explain the emotions that come up when listening to this song?! Got so emotional and I don't even understand what they are saying, it's magical.
That last scene. To me the story culminates here. I myself no matter how many times I watch this video I get emotional. I feel my heart soar. I feel a swell of pride in my Nordic roots. My take on this final scene after watching for context and understanding she is the key protector of nature, this final scene tells me in that moment she is embracing her destiny. She has decided nothing will stop her from achieving her goal... even if it means she must charge head down, horns forward like an ox.
Not really sure exactly where the video was filmed, but would believe in Norway somewhere? My guess would be on Stadtlandet or in the Lofoten/Vesterålen archipelago, which has a few beautiful beaches. Next? The Lifa concert is really good, so maybe "Krigsgaldr" or "In Madijan"?
Other Heilung recommendation would be Norupo, other awesome recommendations in the same genre (and arguably as epic as this video specifically) would be Wardruna; "Kvitravn" and "Lyfjaberg". The last two have English translations in captions on the videos, hits awesome without them, but hits different when you know what they're saying and what the song is about.
For another Nordic experience and journey, both in video and song, check out Lyfjaberg by Wardruna. That video does have subtitles so you can follow the path as well. Cheers from Canada!
Ears are blessed by the group yet again. Could t be more glade for them. They are a relevant art that’s needed to reflect. Where we came from. What we are missing. The connections of life. Being in touch with our beautiful planet.
This is not my information but provided by the very knowledgeable Nidels a huge fan of Heilung, which I hope helps you understand where the "band" are coming from as it were and give you some insight into what they represent etc I am glad that you give this extremely exceptional Nordic group a chance. Ah ... if you want to hear the wonderful voice of Maria Franz, vocalist of Heilung, I recommend this video of her concert. @ Other interesting songs are: Fylgija Ear, Alfadhirhaiti, Othan, Hamrer Hippyer and the recent norupo music video.
I'm not new to Heilung at all, but every damned time I listen to this song it makes me sob like a child and I literally couldn't explain why. I get your reaction, totally ; )
So cute guy :) I recently started listening to Heilung and have about the same emotions. PS: I'd also like to see your reaction to Draconian Sorrow of Sophia.
Glad to see that you accepted the challenge on this one! I'm not seeing any folk metal so far, which I think would be complementary to much of what you've reacted to but different. Eluveitie, a Swiss band that often sings about Celtic themes could be interesting. They recently did a collab with German folk band Faun to sing about a Welsh prince Gwydion with Eluveitie singing in Welsh. But for something more challenging, their recent release from Nuclear Blast - Aidus? They put out a separate lyric video for the single on their own channel.
All of the sounds on Heilung recordings come from a combination of voices (Maria, and Kai primarily), instruments (as you said, which they make themselves, and only out of materials that would have been available to ancient, Bronze, and early mediaeval peoples), and natural sounds (i.e. Chris will record the sounds of a stream of water and process it until it sounds like something else). They use no "electric" instruments, and no synthesizers. The group find this to be very important to their process of transporting the listener to another time and place; both of which are ingrained in our DNA; as ALL peoples can trace their ancestry back to nomadic/tribal people from the end of the Younger Dryas (Ice Age). What you felt is a deeply ingrained emotional reaction, and is intentional on the part of Heillung, who call their music "amplified history". They also begin and end each of their "shows" (which they call "rituals") with these words... Remember, that we all are brothers All people, beasts, trees and stone and wind We all descend from the one great being That was always there Before people lived and named it Before the first seed sprouted
It’s so cute when the little girl pets the big animal then climbs onto its back and takes a nap. They were banned from some countries because some of their instruments are of human bones or painted with human blood.
Their first concert, LIFA, is amazing as several people have pointed out. Krigsgaldr is where most start, Maria sings the most on that. Alfadhirhaiti was my introduction to them, so is probably my favorite just for that reason. The whole concert gives me chills.
First time I heard them 2ish years ago, I fell in love and can't get enough. Their songs are stories and meant to make you feel emotions. Because you did means you totally got the song. Yes please look in them more and listen to their music. You won't be disappointed 👍🏻☺️
There's a part of the video that stood out to me and if anyone can help me out confirming or denying my initial though it be great, there's the section where Maria is at the beach and she makes a sound like a deer call, then, adult Anoana also makes the same or a very similar sound, it means they were calling each other? Heilung family, please, help!
I had wondered whether you'd enjoy this one tbf, bro lol! I love the whole.. I dunno.. it leaves me feeling very light in heart and spirit, I like it a lot haha. Great effort indeed, I agree lad!
Broken by The Scream, Telecide, miscast and Passcode. These are your introduction to metal idols from me. Except Telecide, they’re like a regular heavy metal band with a great female lead vocal
so difficult to collect my thoughts....I am amazed, frightened, hopeful, feeling mortal, wanting to pray to some deity........I believe these are the emotions Maria and the band hope to elicit from the audience.........I can imagine these are EXACTLY the sounds made by pre-Christian Norse shaman, priests and warriors......I believe the language is a proto-Germanic ( or Scandinavian ) dialect.....note that the ritual takes place under an eclipse in the sky.......I like to think the ending shows Anoana merging with the ox in a perpetuation of nature in the circle of life....they make their costumes and instruments.........Heilung call their music "Amplified History".........
Could you please react to HammerFall - Hammer of Dawn or Brotherhood, HammerFall is a Swedish Heavy Metal band formed in 1993, In Gothenburg! They are very old school! But all their songs is catchy and you have to headbang to their songs! I think you would like it
Really appreciate your reaction. I couldn't help but notice, but is that a holly ogham hanging down behind you? Holly keeps showing up recently. Be well. /l\ 🌞

It's a ancient, scandinavian form of herd calling named Kulning, Laling or Kauking. So I guess you could say they are calling each other.
It bring us to our Beginning💫
Why they haven't won a Grammy yet is beyond me they are so much better than 90% of the stuff out there
95% Plus.
If i'm not my usual cup of tea this one. But the imagery used in this is awesome. Good effort this song is.
Man, wait until you've heard the Lifa concert. Seriously life changing.
My exact feeling, it reached right in and grabbed my soul.
I'm not sure there is anyone else performing Bronze Age - Early Medieval Era music.
so difficult to collect my thoughts....I am amazed, frightened, hopeful, feeling mortal, wanting to pray to some deity........I believe these are the emotions Maria and the band hope to elicit from the audience.........I can imagine these are EXACTLY the sounds made by pre-Christian Norse shaman, priests and warriors......I believe the language is a proto-Germanic ( or Scandinavian ) dialect.....note that the ritual takes place under an eclipse in the sky.......I like to think the ending shows Anoana merging with the ox in a perpetuation of nature in the circle of life....they make their costumes and instruments.........Heilung call their music "Amplified History".........
Could you please react to HammerFall - Hammer of Dawn or Brotherhood, HammerFall is a Swedish Heavy Metal band formed in 1993, In Gothenburg! They are very old school! But all their songs is catchy and you have to headbang to their songs! I think you would like it
🔥🔥🔥
Be warned wimmin look at me funny when I suggest they might look good in horns.
