In this video we see a killer T cell of the immune system attacking a cancer cell.
Professor Gillian Griffiths:
"Cells of the immune system protect the body against pathogens. If cells in our bodies are infected by viruses, or become cancerous, then killer cells of the immune system identify and destroy the affected cells. Cytotoxic T cells are very precise and efficient killers. They are able to destroy infected or cancerous cells, without destroying healthy cells surrounding them. The Wellcome Trust funded laboratory of Professor Gillian Griffiths, at the Cambridge Institute for Medical Research, investigates just how this is accomplished. By understanding how this works, we can develop ways to control killer cells. This will allow us to find ways to improve cancer therapies, and ameliorate autoimmune diseases caused when killer cells run amok and attack healthy cells in our bodies."
Cytotoxic T cells are just 10 microns in length: approximately one-tenth the width of a human hair. These movies are 92 times real time.
The original footage shown was made by Alex Ritter, a PhD student on the NIH-OxCam programme, in the laboratory of Professor Gillian Griffiths at the Cambridge Institute for Medical Research and the Department of Medicine of the Clinical School of the University of Cambridge. The images were acquired using an Andor Revolution spinning disk system with an Olympus microscope. Professor Griffiths is a Wellcome Trust Principal Research Fellow.

Your body is spending every single hour of everyday and night without stopping to make sure you experience life and good health as much as possible. if there was ever a reason to exercise, eat and drink healthy , avoid suicide or self harm, this would be the most relatable reason for every person to keep pushing on. Regardless of where you are from or what your circumstances are, you have trillions of cells working together endlessly to make sure you are fine through sick and through health.

In 1996 my brother gave me T Cells to fight the Leukaemia cells in my body that were not killed when he gave me a Bone Marrow Transplant in 1991. That was a (deliberate) T Cell depleted-sibling donor transplant. I stayed stable for 5 years then the T Cell Infusion went in for the ultimate battle. Within six weeks! I was declared clear of Leukaemic cells. I thank him, the medical Team at the Royal Liverpool Hospital in Liverpool and now the Clatterbridge Hospital in Liverpool who now see me annually. Not forgetting the Great Mathematician, Engineer and Architect of all things, watching us while up above. February 2024 is 33 years since my transplant and 28 years I was declared clear of Leukaemic Cells. I owe my life to T Cells acting just like the one in the video above. More power to the understanding and development of T Cell technology by Physicians and Scientists around the World.

This might sound weird and crazy but for years of my life I never paid any real attention to my weight, health, etc. but one day I came across a video like this (not this exact one, just a cell defending against something) and it absolutely changed the way I live. For those of you wondering what the two red dots are, those are microtubule organizing centers. These allow the cytotoxic T cell to direct cytotoxic granules towards the cancer cell. These granules contain the components that kill the cancer cell.

Can we upgrade killer T-cells?
This is amazing, but a little scary. Speaking as somebody who has an auto-immune disorder, the treatment for which is a T-Cell inhibitor. If gene therapy research could find a way of reprogramming these wonderful cells to stop attacking my joints and focus on cancer cells and foreign invaders I'm sure I wouldn't be alone in my joy and happiness.

The work that has been done on T-Cells with blood cancer therapy is legitimately amazing. CAR-T ended up being what kept me in remission for almost a year :) It's really fascinating to watch what goes on at a cellular level.
