Back in the 70s & 80s Production racing, especially Production endurance racing was HUGE down here in the Southern Hemisphere, the "Castrol 6 hour" races in Australia and NZ where hotly contested, so much so that when Honda rolled out the CB1100R and started to dominate, Suzuki built a very special Katana 1100 to go head to head with it. Called the GSX1100SXZ but known in NZ and Aussie as the "Wire-Wheeler", at first only 20 units were built and delivered to NZ, as 20 units was the minimum required to homologate it as a production motorcycle rather than "racing specials" under the rules of the New Zealand Autocycle Union. It came with Yoshimura cams, bigger carbs, freer flowing exhaust etc, and won the 1981/1982 NZ National Production Champion. Anyway production racing was BIG down here is the gist of what im trying to say :-) In 1988, at the Castrol 6hr production endurance race a ZX10 was entered, up against a horde of FZR1000s, (the winner of the 87 race and favourite to win) a couple of GSX-R1100s, even an RC-30. The ZX-10 just took off from the start! was waaay in the lead until a botched rear tyre change during a pitstop saw the FZR1000 in 2nd take the lead. The grunt of the ZX-10 was clear, you could see it pulling away from the FZR1000s (itself no slouch!) the Yamahas would gain ground in the infield and corners but it was clear the Kawasaki had more power. Anyway, cool bike, don't see them much now, so much better than the model before it, the GPZ1000RX.
Awesome, I'm just starting a restoration on exactly the same bike. Would you know, is gold the original colour of the brake calipers? What is the little window in the faring @ 2:02 for?
Hi - I think the gold is original colour as I have seen others with it plus this was such an original example with only 14k miles so whilst cannot promise - pretty sure. No idea about fairing cut out unless it's a grab are to put on centre stand?? Good luck with yours - massively under-rated bike at the moment :D
What I used to go to work on. What a way to start your day!
a bike a dreamt of when i was a teen, but had neither they money nor the skills......... a dream remains a dream... cheers
