I love mine but I’ve got an 8 inch wrist so it’s perfect for me. The other thing I love is it’s a unique diver in a world where most look like a handful of original designs. You’re not going to mistake the Samurai for anything else.
I’m 7-1/4 and I think that’s just the notch up from Jody’s size that makes it work. And yeah the look is unmistakable and unique … and handsome in that black&black color scheme. (And I love my Save the Oceans Samurai from 3-4 years ago.)
Opened my Steeldive Willard Christmas morning. Beauty. Running like a top. Perfect alignment. Gorgeous sapphire crystal. Perfect finishing. Minus 4 on first 24 hours. Clasp is shite. Bit of a hair nipper and not quite enough micro. But come on! ~$100 CDN. It has and will get some wrist time. Jody looking forward to your channel in 2022. Merci!
Me too. Must have sapphire. I ended up selling all my microbrands. I loved them, they were great watches. At the end of the day, the watch "experts" just got to me. Selling and trading and posting things like "no microbrands please". I started buying these Seiko Kings, Samurai and Turtles. Even non King because it's easy and cheap to mod to a new sapphire crystal. So, now I have a great diver, with specs, with name recognition and history. Happy now. :). Plus, Seiko does have beautiful dials with applied indices.
A big improvement - but I'd love to see some other dials. A orange King Sammy would be outstanding with the waffle dial, and both the Sammy and the Turtle Save the Ocean models could stand the upgrade too. Those dials were lovely. Happy Christmas to all.
Orange!! That would be nice....and Yellow, my new favourite dial colour. Loved it so much got a yellow dial Steeldive SD1975 tuna. Hate to say, but it might be even a bit better than my original black one. 🙃
I just got the SRPE77J1, the 'Dark Manta' Samurai, a few weeks from Amazon for the EXACT same price down to the penny that you paid. I absolutely LOVE IT! Its my first Samurai and I am not disappointed (and zero QC issues, hooray!). I was taken by it in pictures and its even better in hand and on wrist, I just love looking at it. I have a 7.25" wrist and it is big, but not too big. Another OUTSTANDING review from a great man. Wish you and yours a Happy Holiday and coming New Year. Keep up the good work mate !
Awesome. I prefer the Manta Ray version, it’s far more impressive to look at. I have the ‘Great White Shark’ special edition Samurai. It has some really nice unique features which I love compared to other editions, but I do miss the absence of the sapphire. I’ve got mine on the hexad bracelet provided by Strapcode, it’s a match made in heaven I’d recommend for any Samurai!
Got the king turtle last 2 years ago jody and thanks to you I have also got even more watches but can't seem to stay away from the turtle for too long love it have a good one mate aw the best 👌
Got a white dial one and put it on a hexad bracelet from Strapcode and I like to call it the seiko "stormtrooper" because of the white dial, gloss bezel, and futuristic hard angles everywhere.
Yep. I got the white waffle dial King Samurai on long rubber strap. Replaced that strap with a shorter plainer black rubber strap. I like it as an occassional wear. Later I bought the white dial titanium King Shogun. Like that one even more. I'm not a turtle case fan. 😒
I'm always amazed by the timegrapher numbers you get from the Seiko movements. I'll just say my experience has not been like that....Anyway, I've got two Samurai's and I think the sure way to minimize the feeling of being so large is to get one in a dark color, and to not put it on a bracelet. Because of the angles, the dark colors really slim down visually. I will say that I am one of those who don't mind the aluminum bezel insert because of the lack of bling and the ability to play with the texture (as Seiko has done on other versions) but if that's what it takes to get sapphire, so be it. Hardlex really starts looking dull when you have quite a few other watches with coated sapphire.
Samurai for me. Looks better, and less likely to get stolen, than a Submariner. I think it’s more handsome too. Shame they are so flipping expensive in the UK.
@@Alex-zr4yl looks are subjective as beauty is in the eyes of the beholder, however, I must agree that most people will definitely find the Sub more attractive. Raymond might just not be one of those people, fair enough
It is a gorgeous looking watch, I find it hard to decide whether to perfer the King Turtle or the King Samurai. I believe the save the ocean dials are even a touch more beautiful.
I have 1 regular turtle blue whale, 1 sammy blue whales, king turtle save the ocean, and king turtle manta ray and y favorite is the king turtle blue ocean. That dial is just beautiful.
It's a nice watch but I think if you're looking to buy right now, you may want to take a look at the Shogun - there seems to be a fire sale for the Shogun with the AD at the moment here in the UK with quite a few at 50% off MSRP, that mean it's not that much more expensive than a Samurai and the Shogun is a far far better watch - this is coming from someone who own both the Samurai and the 2020 Shogun
@@michaelbradley5722 yep, the white dial Shogun is gorgeous, the case shape is lovely - photos doesn't do justice to the watch at all, it is so much better when you have it in your hand
Just picked mine today from Watsons. Tried this and the king Turtle, the King Samurai is really nice on my 7.85inch wrist. Love it. Has a real quality feel and I don’t feel the weight at all.
I just got one lightly used for $260. Not bad at all. Replacing the bracelet with a hexad one from long Island and it's all done. No need to do anything else to it except perhaps a fully lumed bezel insert. We'll see though.
I have a Samurai Save the Ocean. It is one of my favourites. I have never been drawn to the turtles but everyone seems to praise them. Maybe I should try one out.
Love the Samurai case, but not too keen on the tag, especially given the age old question of Seiko's signature alignments. I've been thinking about going the Islander way instead. Although a smidge smaller, it have the same specs, better alignment, better bracelet/clasp & compatible with most of the SKX mods, plus Marc is good people. As for picking between the Samurai & Turtle, I prefer the Samurai.
Whatever you say about this bracelet clasp, the transition between the clasp and the bracelet (on both ends) is almost seamless. With milled clasps there is unfortunately a couple of millimeters "step"... and very often an uncomfortably sharp step 😖 Just the other day I was smoothing the clasp edges on my Zelos Swardfish TI with a fine metal file and sandpaper. And mumbling some bad words under my breath while doing it 🤷🏿♀️
Save The Ocean 2021 King Samurai Special Edition SRPF79K Manta Ray A$465 on Starbuy today, silicon strap takes care of weight issue and colour way is amazing 👍
I can't lie, this one is tempting! I love my Black Series SRPH11, wouldn't mind one more. Great review, thanks Jody! Hey it was 17 C for Christmas up here in Ohiooooo. Amazing! 😃 ❤ ⌚
I would recommend picking up a the Islander Watch version from Marc at Long Island Watch. I bought a new samurai from Amazon about a year ago and it came with an ungodly misaligned chapter ring. Returned it and bought the ISL-62, full lume great wave dial, sapphire crystal, screwed bracelet, milled clasp and felt the same on wrist. The only downside is the amount of micro adjust but it's still leagues better than the seiko.
Certainly a lot of Seiko for your buck. And it is a handsome watch. A must have for any Seiko collector and a good choice for anyone with a larger than average wrist that wants that tooly look and a workhorse movement. Great review !
I love my Samurai. While I envy the king’s sapphire glass, I prefer the regular’s subtle dial, grey 15 minute time indicator, and all silver hands. That is why I won’t go King. The Samurai’s angles are perfection for me 🥰
I have two earlier versions, including the Blue Lagoon. Love the distinctive angular case. But it must be asked, why do the sapphire, dial, and ceramic upgrades and refuse to put a milled clasp on it? It boggles the mind. So much so that you had to sheepishly avoid showing the monstrosity. I therefore deem this to be the Prince Samurai. 😁
That’s a looker! A Miltat Hexad bracelet is a great upgrade for these. I upgraded a black PVD Save The Ocean Sammy with a Hexad, double dome sapphire, and a ceramic bezel. Very happy with it now.
I think the orange samurai's matte black index frames and hands help them to look a little more tidy. The polished and brushed surfaces in this and other models kind of add on to the lume to make the indices and hands look a little oversized. I'm biased towards my orange sami for sure, but it says something that I'm just not much tempted by any other models. The exception has been the Save The Ocean Dark variant - that dark blue/green is just cool.
They could just make a slightly better bracelet with solid end links and dominate the market but for some reason choose not to. Its clearly not a cost issue because brands 1/5 the scale and size manage to do it for a lower end user cost.
I prefer the sharper case edges and lines on the King Samuri over the smooth look of the King Turtle. I only wish Seiko would put the proper milled and not stamped clasp with more adjustment on a lot more of their watches. There are a lot of beautiful Seiko's out there that I would love to own, but when I see them with a crappy bracelet and clasp, I turn away.
Thanks Jodi for yet another crackin' review!! NO ONE is as efficient and articulate as you in this business. I owned the "Limited Edition" deep blue Samurai and the Orange dial Samurai, but they were just to chunky and heavy, so I sold one and returned the other. This one you're wearing Jodi would go straight back for another with that horribly misaligned chapter ring. Just awful. And the Turtle? No thanks - cushion cases just look bloated and ugly, in my not-so-humble opinion. I felt you were pretty easy-going about the misalignment - I suppose you've vented your anger enough times that it just isn't worth it anymore, but personally I've sworn off all Seiko products, except for the Seiko Premier Kinetic Drive, with Moonphase, model SRX015P1. I just opened it up as my Christmas gift to myself, and I'm smitten. Have a fantastic New Year, sir.
Thanks for revisiting the Samurai, Jody. I love my SRPB51 with standard black dial and Aluminium bezel but 3 years on I've bought other Seikos and no more Sams. It's just a little big and my wrist is 7.25. With the King, I'd have to remove the carbuncle on the crystal. I really don't get them. You can read the date perfectly well without.
Definitely a worthwhile watch with nice specs. However, I am very satisfied with my regular Samurais (and Turtles) and feel no need to upgrade to the King. Moreover, my eyesight is fine and I don't need or like the cyclops. That goes double for the hideous candy bar cyclops on the King Turtle. Likewise, I prefer the aluminum bezel insert to the ceramic, as I think the former is more tool-ey and more appealing. Finally, while hardlex instead of sapphire isn't ideal, I have never cracked or even scratched mine and am perfectly happy with them, especially at the lower price. YMMV.
Last Christmas I got an Islander isl-28 (original sunburst silver “dawn grey”) & it’s been my main watch since. Samurai case, great band, grey/orange sapphire bezel insert. I’ve since swapped the band for a strapcode YM 2-tone & the bezel insert for a YM-like steel. But the samurai cases are great & really wear well on me (7 1/2” wrist)
Beautiful watch, guess it should fit my 7.4 inch wrist, how would you compare the fit with the Orient triton which is a bit cheaper I'm in need of a new watch so I'm looking to find the best option under $400.
Seriously wish Aussie retailers had the King Samurai Padi jade colour watches in stock. Been burned on alignment on a previous Sammy & can't quite pull the trigger on an unseen one. Great looking watch though with the specs (movement excepted, but they kinda have to use in-house) we reasonably expect nowadays on a watch like this. I may yet take that gamble...
Cool review, I was really interested in this watch until you pointed out that indexes on the dial do not line up. Unbelievable and a deal killer for me.
Jody, do you keep a data set for the movements you come across? If not, I strongly recommend that you start. l suggest a simple text/Excel/GoogleDocs sheet with a few columns staying the movement, date, model, then the columns from the Weishi time grapher (+/- seconds, amplitude, beat error). This will not only be useful (you can have a mean, variance and know your p-values), but over years the data might actually have monetary value, especially if you had community contributions. Such data sets seem to be difficult to obtain, and you are in a unique position to start one. I highly recommend that you do. I can maintain it for you, but in all honesty, it is no more work for you to enter the values into a table than to type them into an email.
Well done my friend great watch ⌚,I love everything about this piece ,nothing to crazy ,another contender among other brands specifically at this price.... thanks again for bringing us one more fantastic watch,,,.👍👍...
Great review but these are now selling at around 700. I really like the waffle dial but I just can't see myself paying this amount for the specific watch.
Great review and more enjoyable because Mrs. Santa Claus left this one under the tree for me Christmas morning! She knows where I go for my Seikos, so I got a perfect alignment (also, Made in Japan as many Turkish Seiko's are!). The icing on the cake, she put a gorgeous black and grey rubber strap on it as she knows I usually take off the bracelet. Mrs. Claus is absolutely fantastic! 😁
Aye. I just spent 300 on a new Pepsi turtle and now looking at this King samurai haha Where does it end!? Glad I found your channel. Really enjoy the review. And nice to hear a fellow Scot.
Would be cool to have the minute and hour hands modelled on the Katana and Tanto sword shapes, respectively. Could be slimmed down too. Tipping the scales more at a Sumo rather than a Samurai at that weight.
Agreed about the sapphire upgrade but who wanted all the cyclops date magnifiers... The king turtles is by far worse with the candy bar. Is this a Seiko strategy to keep the originals desirable since they look better?
Thanks Jody. This was the last push I needed before pulling the trigger. Just ordered a king samurai for myself today with the Boxing Day sales in Sydney. Got the SRPF79K model.
I've got an orange Samurai (same as the one reviewed here a couple of years ago). I never liked the two tone bezel to the point I stopped wearing the watch. Last month I bought a ceramic bezel insert from DLW watches and bam it's my favourite watch again.
nah, I’d always steer someone towards a Helm instead. If you can buy one. Get a Vanuatu or Khuraburi head to head with either Samurai or Turtle and Seiko is going to be on the receiving end of a lesson in deriving quality at an affordable price. Not a Seiko hater, but they simply fail at quality at scale.
I do like this range of watches, but I found it hard to justify £560 when I picked up a Citizen BJ7111-51M Super Titanium, Saphite, Cyclops, GMT and milled clasp ( admittedly no ceramic bezel) for £252.
Big fan of the Samurai, had the STO version briefly and was very impressed though it did have some QC problems, love the dial on this one but it looks like it has the same issues I had with indices that didn't properly align. Or could it be a perspective thing? Anyways glad they've beefed it up, but still needs a better clasp imo. Hope you had a great christmas Jody.
Its okay, I think the Sumo is the best value Seiko at the moment, if you can get one on sale for around AU670ish, I just bought the pepsi at that price, and love it on my 7.5 inch wrist. I had the SBDC061, and to be honest, I reckon the Sumo has a nicer design, but the SBDC061 was slightly better finish, I'd still take the Sumo though.
The only thing I miss on these Kings is the grey color and unique minute markers from the original aluminum bezel from the 12 to the 15. It really added a lot of character to the Samurai.
I love mine but I’ve got an 8 inch wrist so it’s perfect for me. The other thing I love is it’s a unique diver in a world where most look like a handful of original designs. You’re not going to mistake the Samurai for anything else.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. I really enjoy your content. It doesn't look too big on your wrist
Oh yeah and the mini turtle is better than ALL of these!!! So comfortable.👍👍👍👍
Same bracelet as My sport 5 landshark. That said the clasp is different and has a dive Extention on the Samurai
The king samurai is perfect after the bracelet is upgraded with a strap code
Cool review, I was really interested in this watch until you pointed out that indexes on the dial do not line up. Unbelievable and a deal killer for me.
I can’t wait for the Orient comparisons!
Jody, do you keep a data set for the movements you come across? If not, I strongly recommend that you start. l
suggest a simple text/Excel/GoogleDocs sheet with a few columns staying the movement, date, model, then the columns from the Weishi time grapher (+/- seconds, amplitude, beat error).
Been looking forward to this one. I want to get one of these
Just ordered the “Shu Iro” ltd Ed of this watch. Comes with a rubber strap too. That stainless strap links a little cheap.
Got the SRPF79K model.
how much was it? I'm waiting for EOFY sale.
Great review as usual from Jody! I'm looking forward for a ‘Samurai Shu-Iro’ European Exclusive SRPH61K1 which is coming out in January'22.
With PADI you get much nicer dial, hand in different colors and special edition.
King Samurai is a big winner for me. The Seiko SRPG21 Padi King has my attention. What do you think of it?
All of the Kings are excellent, I think, especially that baby blue and grey 👌
@@JustOneMoreWatch Thanks. I appreciate it.
had my king samurai about a year i think, put it on a retro razor strapcode/militat braclet, looks amazing !
My favorite feature is the knurled bezel edge. The hour hand is too stubby for my liking.
Seiko better step up their game, as micros like San Martin are amazing, especially for the value.
I would loooove a mini Samurai version (something around 39mm)
Super nice/huge big presence on the wrist ! BTW - I hate the Turtle case shape... lol !
That's one well-fed samurai!
I have a SRP775. I wish they made a gilt king turtle or king samurai. I would snatch it right up if they did!
Yep I agree the turtle steals it.
I have the save the ocean great white shark, one of my favorite Seikos. The case is very similar to my Zelos swordfish at only 42 mm.
Greetings from former Timex City, Dundee. Great reviews. This Samurai is a very nice watch :)
Think for the price difference, I'd stick with my original Samurai over the King, could use that to get another watch or two
jv a GMT king samurai in titanium on a real rubber strap, with orange red or platinum plated hands and markers
The only thing I miss on these Kings is the grey color and unique minute markers from the original aluminum bezel from the 12 to the 15. It really added a lot of character to the Samurai.
