For me….Seiko’s were a take it or leave it brand. But the longer I collected, the more I learned. The more I learned, the more I realized Seiko was a really innovative brand. I now own several and have modified almost all of them in some fashion. I love the fit or wearability of the Turtle. But my daily wear is usually MM 300 (SLA021). Seiko’s just work! I never have to worry about them. Even with scratches and dings, I wear Seiko’s more than ANY Swiss brands I own. As I aged, and work from home became an option for a lot of us, I found blue jeans and tees were the norm. And Seiko fits perfectly for everyday life.
Turtle dial, bezel and hands(Monster seconds) in a Samurai Case. Easy Mod watch to build. That Samurai bezel probably could use a new gasket and some lubrication on said o-ring gasket. That should free it up a little bit.
My dad had a Pepsi Dial Seiko in the 70s, and is the reason I got my first Seiko in 1990. Still have it and will be 34 years ownership in few weeks. Got my first Seiko mechanical Turtle last month.
I thought I was seeing things, I thought I had not had enough coffee in me, I thought I was delusional.... Are you telling me that my favorite Audio guy-man-head is also my new favorite Watch guy-man-head!??? No, friend. it's my lucky day! How did I just find this out! Ah.... I know... I just got into watches at the beginning of August and am realtively new to this whole world. In all seriousness, I enjoy your content in the audio realm. I have no doubt that I'll enjoy your content here as well! Looking forward to hearing your speaky words coming out of your face from the Youtubie screen! :)
I've always been a turtle/WIllard fan due to the cushion case design. I especially like the 779 Pepsi turtle with the black dial. Finally, ditch the bracelets. Seiko divers are meant to be worn on rubber. Finally, I appreciate you mentioning the "original" Seiko designs/heritage. I'm not a Chinese clomage fan.
Definitely the Turtle, but because the cushion case does some sort of voodoo magic where its enormous size somehow shrinks and fits even the thinnest of wrists.
Samurai all day then Sumo . I own 5 Seiko divers 2 of them actually go into the ocean. I live in Florida and go diving/ snorkeling and they have never let me down .🤿👍🏻
Both🤣🤣 because I have them both. I had sold my turtle and kept my Samurais but had to buy another turtle because I missed it to much. I would highly recommend replacing the bracelets with Uncle Straps bracelets because they’re so much better.
I am a proud owner of a Black Samurai. I feel the Seiko bracelets are rubbish, so I wear it on a Barton Tropic strap and could not be happier. I am certain that after 20 years, the patina of an Aluminum bezel and Hardlex crystal will really be something special.
I just ordered a blue samurai last night. So I'm gonna go ahead and say that I like that one more Side note, ive been watching your other content for a few years now. So its cool that your doing this now as well. Love the content man
I love my king samurai. I don't like any cushion style case. The samurai needs female end links which will make the integration to the bracelet better and a wider better bracelet. Wider to balance the case width. Otherwise its perfect.. Loved to hear your thoughts over this. Any seiko diver is good imo it just the style of the watch the makes the difference..
I'm an 80s and 90s kid too and I think the Seiko stigma back then is that Seiko is an old person's watch. I remember Swatch, tag Heuer, and G-Shock we're all the rage for teens and young adults back then .
I own a version of both watches and changed the bracelet on both. My turtle has a jubilee bracelet from strap code and my samurai has a hex bracelet from either strap code or Long Island. Thanks for sharing.
I'm a Samurai lover, but the 'Grand Turtle' is tempting, but as you already know, I am an emotional purchaser, so watches that commemorate a vessel, fish or event, will always be first in line. Too many divers in this price group to choose just one manufacturer. Thanks for your time and efforts sharing this with us all as always. Stay well brother.
My favourite dive Seiko is the "monster" I've just got the "save the ocean" version, there's 2 "the penguin" and "happy feet" great watches, big chunky buggers 👍👍
I have King version for both Samurai n Turtle..both with rubber diver strap . Each design look different n I love them both. My other Seiko diver watches are with steel bracelets.. MM300, Willard, Sumo n new monster. Again, I love them all and its really a disease...( on adding more.....arrghhh).
Love me the Seiko King Turtle. The solution to Seiko bracelets is Strapcode : ) Cool comparison. Seiko calls it a "Special Edition", which is by default kind of limited, but they also have other designs that are limited editions.
My favorite Seiko diver is the SRPA21 the Pepsi PADI turtle. I have mine on the Strapcode Angus Jubilee and a ratcheting Seiko MM300 clasp. Cheers from Atlantic Canada.
Seiko also offer so called King Turtles and King Samurais. The don't cost a whole lot more, but they both come with ceramic bezel inserts and sapphire crystals, albeit with cyclopses.
Seiko divers are simply fundamental in the history of dive watches. The 'best' is obviously subjective, but Seiko divers are meant to perform and anything else is personal preference. I don't particularly care for cushion cases, but the Turtle is a truly iconic Seiko watch with a long history. Seiko is an innovator and you can't mention Seiko divers without mentioning the 800lbs fish in the corner of the dive bell: the Tuna. I'm wearing my Darth Tuna as I type this. However, in this price range the street Tunas are players and another iconic Seiko is the Arnie. That's a hint.
I have the 2019 King Samurai with cyclops, sapphire crystal and ceramic bezel insert. Such a baller watch in black with waffle dial, gold printing and gold seconds hand. I have an Islander bracelet on the way, much better clasp and screw adjustment not crappy pins and collars. I paid under $370 USD from an Authorised dealer in Australia. Shipped to my door in 3 days!
I have the Pepsi PADI Turtle. Love it! I like the rich blue dial better and the bezel is aligned. I prefer a day-date. Bracelet is a non-starter. Strapcode to the rescue with a ratcheting clasp. Oh yeah. Best Seiko diver? No, not the Willard. Second Gen Monster-Dracula version. Paid $250 seven years ago, now worth $700! It lays on the wrist better, has the best bezel action, and GREAT lume.
Appreciate your real man delivery style and I can just taste the coffee. Looks like a great place to chill. Cold beer at lunch and a sip of whiskey after dinner I assume. I have a few of both and if I had to run out the door and not ever return I suppose I would grab a turtle. They just seem more natural and organic in shape like a well smoothed river rock. Since you like the Pepsi dials try the SRPE99 PADI blue dial cushion case diver. It ought to quench anyone’s thirst.
Nice vid CWM. Thanks. Want to take your Samurai to the next level? Flick the original bracelet and get a Strapcode Hexad bracelet. It take the design of the case and extends it to the bracelet. Lets face it, Seiko are not renowned for the bracelet design (or quality). My Samurai was rarely worn until I upgraded the bracelet. Now it gets plenty of wrist time, probably more than my more expensive watches.
I have several Samurais, several Turtles, absolutely love them. None of them even come close to the 62-MAS reissues, specifically the SPB143 and the SPB239 - Period:)
Nice comparison Randy. My favorite Seiko was a 1st generation orange dial monster. It had the rubber strap and rubber makes me break out and since I had over 100 watches at the time I sold it, bad mistake.
@@cheapwatchman_official They have a good deal on them on Amazon as well right now. It is still more than Jomahshop, but I love that watch. I’m pulling the trigger on it.
I've owned both, the one that's still in my collection is the turtle. I even added a willard, something about the heritage and design makes me love the cushion case. The Samurai by all means wasn't bad. Just my taste change out of the angular design styles. I think you nailed all the great points in this review.
I don't have an Omega or Tudor.. but I do have a Longines Conquest and Oris D65. But when spring/summer rolls around I'm wearing my turtle manta... Would you look at that, I'm wearing it now lol nice video
Try the Seiko King Samurai line. They have sapphire crystal, ceramic bezel, and better dials. You can also find them for like a 100 or so bucks more than the standard samurai.
I own both. It’s a hard to say which is better. Both lovely designs, but imo, both are about 2 mm too wide, and 1 mm too tall. For me, the Turtle has the better case shape. Though I put an Uncle Seiko razor wire bracelet on the samurai and it absolutely rocks.
Besr seiko dive watch or THE best dive watch off all time will always be the Tuna marinemaster. 14,104 feet - under the sea. That's precisely the depth a submarine carried a randomly selected, off-the-shelf version of a Tuna before the pressure crushed the sapphire case crystal into the movement enough to stop the second hand. When surfaced the watch still worked flawlessy. Between their feats like that and inventing quartz to their revolutionary new spring drive movement, the Japanese are not playing when it comes to horology engineering.
I own 3 of each (yes, it is a disease). I like them both a lot but prefer the Samurai. I also added bracelets from Strapcode to each. My PADI Samurai has a waffle dial which is really cool. The colors on the Turtle are the PADI colors. I have 2nd Gen Monster Dracula, an SKX 007 J1 that I never wear (collectibles), and a 2nd gen Sumu (Blumo). Of all of my Seikos, the Sumo fits my 8" wrist the best and has the best finishing and also has a Strapcode bracelet.
Great watches, terrible bracelets! If you want to up your bracelet game on the Samurai or Turtle (or the Monster or SKX, etc.), my suggestion is to go to Uncle Straps or Strapcode. It literally took me from wearing my Seiko's occasionally to regular rotation.
Another great review. Thanks. IMO, The bezel and crown are easier to grip on the samurai, and I’m not a fan of a cushion case. I’ve owned both, sold both, rebought a samurai save the ocean, sold it, now have a monster happy feet. I’ve said before you can’t go wrong with any one of them. So buy what suits your taste.
I have the same Samurai and absolutely love it. The OEM bracelet is not great, so I have both a Hexad Miltat bracelet and a Clockwork Republic rubber strap with metal endlinks, which look amazing. I know Marc has his own brand version of the Hexad, the #BRAC-02, which is quite a bit cheaper and well worth the upgrade.
There is no debate on this. For the history, horology and military history of the Turtle, its the turtle hands down. The Samurai is nice it just doesn't have the history of the turtle. Plus the cushion case wears way more comfortable.
Plenty of aftermarket clasps at Long Island Watch. Just need to check on the lug width. I never owned a Seiko until last week. Got the Sport 5 GMT. First thought was “This bracelet has to go”. Most of my watches are Islanders and when I put the Seiko on it just didn’t have wrist presence my LIW’s do. I think due to the bracelet.
I just subscribed to your channel. Yesterday while viewing your channel I pulled the trigger on that Seiko tropical lagoon turtle from Jomashop, so I curse you and thank you. (JK). Truly thanks for what you do here. Harry L
I don't know a lot about watches but ive been eyeing 2. The seiko 5 gmt is at the same price with prospex samurai padi pepsi bezel. Can you help me out?
I've got a King Samurai. Bezel feels pretty soft compared to my SMP. Is the Turtle any crunchier? Also, a Strapcode hexad bracelet is a great upgrade to a Samurai, especially the clasp.
Sumo….no contest. It’s a very comfortable big dive watch with beautiful lines. It’s a 45mm watch that you can easily wear as a daily; that’s a hard thing to pull off.

My favourite dive Seiko is the "monster" I've just got the "save the ocean" version, there's 2 "the penguin" and "happy feet" great watches, big chunky buggers 👍👍
I'm a samurai person. I have an OG one but have a homage of the turtle. By the way the king versions have sapphire and anti reflection
And is the same price of a normal one
Stupid seiko
My favorite Seiko dive watch is the green King Turtle, with the grenade-patterned dial. Even the green rubber strap is the bomb.
I have a Samurai and a King Turtle. Turtle all the way for me. I never really gelled with the Samurai. Great comparison!
Don't know if anyone has already mentioned them already, but you should check the "Save the Ocean" samurai and turtle special editions
I have the PADI Turtle and the SKX007, really looking to add the SPB143 to the collection soon as well as a Samurai!
Turtle on a tropic strap. Can't beat it.
Totally agreed. Tropic strap all the way. I've never understood bracelets on a dive watch.
Just pulled the trigger on the turtle. Jomashop has a good price. 😊
the pictures on there don't do it justice. it's gorgeous in hand
@@cheapwatchman_official awesome, can't wait to get it. I don't have a true turtle.. I have a Capt. Willard, but it's not the same.
Love me the Seiko King Turtle. The solution to Seiko bracelets is Strapcode : ) Cool comparison. Seiko calls it a "Special Edition", which is by default kind of limited, but they also have other designs that are limited editions.

The cyclops thing is a no go for me. The previous generation of these models without cyclops I love them even without sapphire and ceramic!
