  • Jeremy Irons- I wish I'd buttoned my lip.
    The Oscar winning British actor, Jeremy Irons, tells Stephen Sackur that his words are often taken out of context and that his strong opinions often get him into trouble.
    He has been in the media spotlight for his strong pro-smoking views, an apparent criticism of gay marriage and opinions expressed relating to sexual harassment.

    I don't see why they're having a cow about him honestly expressing his opinions. Leave the man alone! As far as smoking, I think he was right in saying "Have a sense of proportion!" And why are they so insistent on knowing what he FELT about gay marriage? And he didn't say anything AGAINST gay marriage, he said it might change the institution of marriage. Stop putting words in his mouth just to make a headline!

    Jeremy is a badass. That interviewer doesn't seem to know what he's talking about.

  • @Nanciefy
    @Nanciefy 9 років тому +77

    When Jeremy Irons says "I don't have a strong opinion either way" and people think that he is trying to say "I don't like Gay Marriage"... what I think he actually is trying to say is "I don't really care about marriage and it's not such a big deal" but can't just outright say that. It seems like he's trying to express that it's not such a huge deal and that if someone wants to ask him what he thinks about 'gay marriage' they'd first have to ask him what he thinks about 'marriage' in general.
    In the other interview where he actually makes these comments, he discusses all weird aspects about it, as though he was thinking about it on the spot. I don't think he had some agenda just because he didn't outright state "I love Gay Marriage" in that video. He began to discuss the fact that marriage has a Christian definition and that by allowing Gay Marriage, it would change that definition which has been Christian in a very particular way. Yes people can say that "people are allowed to get married in vegas etc and get divorced etc" but it's clear that same sex marriage is a very different thing especially in terms of the fact that marriage itself, the label, is based in Christian traditions.
    Jeremy then clarifies that his rambling and thoughts from the other video may have been misinformed because he might not know exactly how similar Civil Partnerships are to Marriage. And that if for example the question was raised whether same sex couples should have the same rights in a partnership as married heterosexual couples have, that Jeremy would most definitely say yes. And if Civil Partnerships actually do not have the same rights, then he would definitely fight for the same rights and be okay with that. However in terms of 'marriage' itself, with its Christian based label, he was simply discussing the fact that it is a label and what allowing same sex marriage may do to that label.
    When he said "it worries me" it seemed as though he was directing it to the path of what could happen when allowing homosexual marriage (i.e. breaking a Christian based label in a very definitive way and what it could lead to). I don't think he was trying to STATE that by allowing same sex marriage that then suddenly incest and all this other stuff would follow. I don't think he was even pondering this for any malicious intent, but rather simply discussing it and expressing his thoughts as the interviewer questioned. Jeremy is an older man, he's experienced a lot, and so I imagine when he's asked a question about his thoughts on something, it may not be a simple surface answer. And if the lack of a surface answer, to you, makes you assume that he is outright against gay marriage or fundamentally the acknowledgement of equal love for all genders, then 1. You are making an over the top accusation, and 2. You are insulting his intelligence, and frankly being disrespectful.
    Just because it is a big issue or topic in the world today does not mean that anyone who is asked this question should outright state how much they love it. People should not feel so threatened. Jeremy Irons obviously doesn't care who loves who, if anything I am sure he finds it funny even being asked such a random question, as though it would make any particular difference to his life in terms of who loves who. That would be a more plausible reason for why he simply didn't really comment on that as much but rather mentioned the political implications. Marriage itself does not 'prove' Love. Marriage in the end of the day is literally a label invented by Christian tradition which nowadays exists as a way of forming a partnership that is recognised by the law. If there is something else which exists that is equal to this (civil partnership) but without the religion-based label already, then clearly when talking about marriage etc, it's not so much about whether they should have the same rights (because they do) but rather what it means in terms of this label. Either way, don't jump to accusations. He clearly doesn't have a problem with it. If he did he'd say something much more simple.
    P.S. I am not against same-sex marriage. I am for same-sex marriage. I'm not religious, and also my mother is a lesbian. However for me civil partnership and marriage don't really make a difference, as long as people who are in a partnership can have the same rights, I am fine with that. That's all I care about. In the end of the day label doesn't mean as much. If people want to say, the label of marriage has changed a lot nowadays and isn't really a 'Christian' thing anymore, so it shouldn't be viewed like that, then that's great - allow same sex marriage. If people argue, no it still is a Christian thing and it doesn't make sense to change a tradition when gay people already have the ability to make a partnership that is recognised by law in the exact same way, then that's fine too. I don't care as much about the label. I care about the rights. As long as both relationships can be recognised by the law.

    I'm completely heterosexual...

  • @MilkySandwich
    @MilkySandwich 10 років тому +57

    "It's deeply unpleaseant to people nearby who hate cigarette smoke" - Well there is a difference between deeply unpleasant things and life-threatening things. If we talk about life-threatening things, then cigarette smoke is just a drop in the ocean and Jeremy is right -> the hypocrite attitude on a global scale makes non-smokers to miss the point : EVERYTHING that pollutes our planet is almost forgotten when it comes to blaming the Tobacco Industry, this " bad guy " is taking all the credits for our environmental problems, because of the poor judgement of so many people.
    Smoking is a very old habit, yet WE are the ones who have rising rates of cancer because of all the other things that are harming us at the present moment, so this problem is far more than just some damn cigarettes. This is what Jeremy meant when he said " Have a sense of proportion " , but he could have also said : " Get yourself a brain. "
    And no, he is not trying to justify his habit. Smokers aren't trying to justify their behavior in any way, this is just a presupposition, the truth is that many smokers couldn't care less about what others think of them.
    Irons is simply making a point, not because he is a smoker, but because he is able to see things in a logical and analytic way.
    You either get it or you don't.

    I just adore you Jeremy Irons. You are so forthright; such a Class Act... extraordinarily, brilliantly and exasperatingly human. Such a genius of a man and a genus of an actor. I watch The White Queen, I did not know who the young man in it was and researched and found that Max Irons was your son. I just wrote which I never do several comments one on one of his interviews and one on another. He is such a sweet kind honest forthright classy beautiful young man. And you are quite right as I watch more than one of your interviews, he can and is holding his own and it would be just lovely to see the two of you do something together one day. But he is truly amazing. I even wrote quite a detailed notes to him wishing him well now and in his future God bless him and God bless you of course mentioning you his dad that I have watched you since I can't remember when. I am 65 years old and I will continue to watch you both until I exist no more. I love the part about the flowers in the garden, and how Max said it really helped him. This is something I had done with my mother from a very young age whether it was lying the hay down to grow the grass, weeding, cleaning, seeding, sodding, planting flower bulbs and growing the flowers around the house in the good old of USA on a corner lot nearly two acres. No one can understand what this is like...so therapeutically embracing... it IS something bizarrely amazing. It reaches way down into the soul, the mind in a kinetic way that is just so lovely and heartwarming and heartfelt. I will tell you what I told your son when I wrote a note and a comment to him oh, the same to you God bless and keep you healthy, happy and safe

Although I don't normally like to be touched and kissed by strangers I would have been happy with just a handshake, but I didn't mind because it was him! its not like I was going to push Jeremy Irons off. but if it were anyone else I would have. but there are times when I just cant cuz its too awkward or intimidating cuz you don't want to cause a stir and you want to seem complacent, and I think thats what most women are talking about. You're joking right? According to the U.N. and their medical partners Cancer is up by 400% since 1986. If the growth continues it's likely that almost everyone you bump into will have Cancer at some point in their life. But Jeremy is right, it's not caused by smoking (the increase is what I mean), it really is caused by the garbage pumped into our food and the fluoride in the tap water (gives you brain damage). But nobody seems to talk about the flu shots that admittedly have Mercury, it's on the insert!! You can ask your doctor for the insert (NOT the fact sheet) and see for yourself. Anybody that still has half a brain knows that Mercury is just about the WORST thing you can put into your body. It causes 40+ Cancers, nerve damage, brain damage, bone degeneration, and in some cases... Paralysis, irreversible. Now that's in a good dosage, your flu shots have very small amounts, but those who get them more than once will no doubt have at least 1 Cancer, and probably brain damage in their Adult life (as in age 30 to whenever death occurs) Get your facts straight. Thank you.

      @ignesandros 10 років тому +2

      mcsoHicks If you live long enough, you will get cancer. Cell division and mitochondrial DNA replication are prone to errors and attack by HPV and the like. You have to remember, most of what we consider carcinogenic is such only at impractically high concentrations. Most of what we've eaten for millenia has always contained chemicals which, under the right circumstances, can cause errors in DNA transcription. Read the WHO data on cancer. They blame Hepatitis B, HPV, tobacco, OCCUPATIONAL carcinogens, alcohol, sedentary lifestyle, and obesity. www.who.int/features/qa/15/en/

      ignesandros Funny that you're using recent "studies" from them. Since 2003, everything they've said has been a lie. Not even joking when I say they said Mercury was good for you. They said Alcohol increases your decision making and may improve reaction time. They said Marijuana protects your brain (we now know it causes schizophrenia). They said having a hot tub causes global warming. Funny, because global warming doesn't even exist. The earth has been cooling for decades, and those ice caps that were melting have regrown to 2X their size on average, while polar bears are at the highest population numbers in their history. The point is they've been hijacked by criminal bankers who don't give a damn about us. Don't believe their garbage.

    I see where Jeremy is coming from the point of having a discussion. I think that people should be allowed to have their own opion without loosing their job. Or having a mob try and pursicute them and make them give a public apology that they don’t except. It’s sad.

    on his last question/response: hes right, in order to have personal civil liberty, we have to all be trusted not to do something, and that if we do go wrong hold each other accountable. What we don't need is special attention and or government oversight on particular types of acts. This type of condemnation only creates unfair judgement that does not fit the crime.

    'when i'm walking down the street smoking, it doesn't hurt anybody'. It DOES. it's just that the smokers' sense of smell is atrophied and they don't feel it, but everyone around DO inhale it. and they shouldn't.
    and bringing up that it's not the only thing that's polluting the air is the same is "well, this person gets beaten up every day, why is it bad that I hit him too?"

    not heard more than opinions and a frisky comment that may be preliminary for still a conversation further interesting ...nothing that special that might offend someone on national television,having said this, offense is subjective in relation to individual ,context and culture.
