      You can't give a general answer, of course it's subjective.
      A 20 year old who exercises regularly can train much more and more intensive than a 40 year old who didn't exercise much in his life, and the same amount of exercise would be detrimental for him. Following some general advice without listening to your own body often leads to overtraining.

    5 hours a week? That is preposterous. The CDC is taking the average of humans today, which is not an indication of anything. Average humans today are lazier and eat more calories than our bodies are intended to. Basically, that number has nothing to do with original average human health necessity, which I suspect is much higher than the current situation and/or recommendation.

      Chad B I love how its strongly implied that over 5hrs a week is "too much exercise". Why Tech Insider would decide to emphasize the so called dangers of execessive exercise instead of real issues like obesity is beyond me. The problems brought up in the video mainly affect professional top athletes, which is a fraction of the population. Quite frankly this is just spreading harmful dissinformation imo

    • @nickvoelker7180

      The CDC's recommendation is a minimum, Tech Insider didn't communicate that very well. 5hrs a week of moderate exercise won't make anyone fit or healthy, but it might keep them from becoming morbidly obese.

      That's not what the video is trying to propose. It's just do that people should know that there the human body has limits. It's not so that people can find a lame excuse to be lazy. Heck, I myself am lazy and I know that it badly impacts my health and therefore I plan to exercise. Had I been the type of person who is obsessed of exercise than this video would have be vital to me. Things need to be balanced

      apparently u need at least one rest day a week for 48 hours of muscle recovery. but I really feel like everyday working out for around 2 hours is "not enough". I think maybe I should plan more one day total only arms . so that's my leg rest day. but I do planks with arms as well so not sure if that's considered a rest. but can't stand the thought of doing nothing the whole day. I assume for others a rest day still require walking and stuff but for me I just lay on my ass all day, exercise is the only thing keeping me moving.

      Average people can overstrain. Even by only doing 20 min - 45 minute hitt workouts everyday can lead to loss of period for a lot of women. You have to listen to your body when it asks you for rest. The rest period is also the period where your body can repair the damage that has been done from exercise.

    I started my weight loss journey about a year ago everything went great until I got into a car accident I had to wear a leg cast and couldn't exercise so of course I gained weight as soon as the cast was taken off I started exercising like crazy
    I've been restricting my food intake and I can't focus if I miss a workout
    Today was supposed to be fun because it's Christmas but instead of enjoying this time of the year I went upstairs at 11:40 pm and exercise till 2:02 am
    I feel great after exercising and that's why I don't want to seek help because exercising makes me feel so good but when I'm not exercising I feel terrible so I exercise more and more I can't stop I feel out off control..

      @Banana telekenisis I wouldn' t say that. I also started working out about a year ago and I for a very long time I worked out 1 hour every day which doesn' t seem that much but I have never really worked out before and I also ate less so it was way too much for my body. I remember one time I got up very early and I worked out even when my view got black and I felt like I was about to black out. What I want to say is that at the point where you force yourself to work out even when your body hurts like hell and only the thought of it makes you feel exhausted, you shouldn't ignore it. Your body is giving you signs and it doesn' t help to look strong and handsome when your a physical wreck and training makes you cry. I hope I didn' t offended anyone, I't different for everyone, but I hope this helps a little bit.

      I hope you've found some balance. Calisthenics with light-moderate weight lifting feels the healthiest for me for injury reduction and overall mood, but it's time consuming. Weight lifting is less time consuming but helps with mood unless hangry from overdoing it. Injuries are easier to encounter with weights too. Currently stuck lifting and want to go back to a mix of calisthenics and moderate weights.

    Speaking as a distance runner, overdoing it is more to do with how you train rather than how much you train. The key to becoming successful as an endurance athlete is building stamina; this involves strengthening neuromuscular pathways and teaching your body to effectively use energy. A lot of people who overexercise forget that this doesn't include damaging your body; if you damage your body you need a rest-day. Continuing to exercise usually just screws it up more, and rest-days can be useful to build muscle.

    Thank you for bringing awareness to this. I struggled with exercise addiction for 6 years and I wish there were more resources like this around at the time. I now help those who live with pain following an eating disorder.

    I do 2 workouts a day. My first work out is strength training - I break a little sweat, but I'm not dying or pushing myself too hard. My second is a 10 - 15 minute HIIT workout in the evening with 15-30 second breaks in between exercises so it's 10-15 min straight of hardcore routines. That's what I define as "moderate." I skip the HIIT when I don't have time or I feel tired (always listen to your body) or I skip the gym when I'm not feeling it. I definitely love to workout because it gives me sustained energy, going more than 2-3 days without working out makes me feel tired. I may be half-addicted?

I'll go from feeling good or neutral before and when I first start my workout, to feeling great about halfway through it and beyond. Usually ride the high for a few hours and then feel good the rest of the day. But sometimes ill experience both of these feelings and then feel an overwhelming feeling of sadness toward the end of my workout and for the next couple hours afterwards if I go too hard. It's so weird!

    If you get 8-9 hours of sleep, you're more than getting enough rest for your mind/body.

    "One unsurprising study found that light to moderate runners had a lower risk of death than people who didn’t exercise. But, in a surprising turn, some people who ran at a faster pace for more than 3 times a week had a similar risk of dying as the non-runners. So running too much, and too intensely, seems to undo some of the health benefits gained from regular running.

      Then what i would eat in the day be like:
      5 am: preworkout: banana or nothing cause every calories count
      7 am: a bowl of cereal whole grain with oat milk
      10:5 am: a little bit of fruit or apple
      12:00 am: small portions of steak, chicken or healthy noodles (really small)
      : sometimes when I allowed it as a cheat day I would have priobiotic yogurt as dessert
      5 pm: another bowl of cereal, oats or tiny portion of what there was for dinner (smt I would only eat an apple because I thought the food would make me fat)
      The worst it that I didn’t lose that much weight doing that for months

    I don’t think I’m overtraining. I’ve made a lot of progress in the last 10 months, but my sleep has gotten so much worse. I enjoy working out but there’s some days where I don’t sleep enough and it takes hours to fall asleep and I just want to give it un entirely. But I like working out and I’ve made so much progress but it’s like my body doesn’t want me to. It takes minimum an hour to fall asleep every night and I usually sleep around 7 hours. I’ll be so happy if I get 8 hours. And even if I do sleep 8 hours, I’ll get up multiple times during the night. I go to the gym every other day so 3-4 times a week. I genuinely don’t know what to do. Hey what’s happening is your prolly overtraining and not getting enough rest. When you workout your body is under stress but it’s good stress if you do it right, but what’s happening to you and has happend to me many times is that your body is staying elevated cortisol after your workout , cortisol is the stress hormone and it stays elevated when you train to hard to often without rest. You can’t sleep because your bodies flooded with cortisol and is in survival you are cetabolic ur body is literally eating away to survive. Other signs of high cortisol , low mood low sex drive flat muscles fatigue and the biggest one trouble falling asleep. You need to take some time off and relax do deep breathing exercises. Your adrenaline is pumping at night when you should be sleeping I been there it’s horrible. Listin to your body don’t push it rest and grow

      First of all you should consult a Doctor or health professional so that they can give you advice and recommendations on what you should do. When you workout you also gain muscle and bone mass while loosing fat so don't expect too much of a loss in weight. You should also take a look at your diet and how often and how much do you eat. If you have more caloric input than the amount you use, your also not going to loose those fats. Everyone is different some have high metabolism some don't. That's why it is important to consult a health professional and get advice from them as you embark on a weight loss program, also be patient the healthiest way to loose weight is to loose it gradually.

    Wait, but "Its okay to be smart" has a video about the human body being greatly built for long distance running, such as hundreds of kilometers, because our joints and moving mechanics make this possible. SO how tf can someone get tendonitis doing something they were naturally born to do?

    • @mionity8060
      @mionity8060 6 років тому +2

      Michael Khiev well , if you do it excessively it will generate that. The human body is 70% water but still you can die for drinking excessive water. And the body was made naturally for that.

    • @PhaseSkater
      @PhaseSkater 6 років тому +1

      Michael Khiev because of higher body fat. Obviously someone lean can run without tendon issues versus someone 250 pounds

    • @datatsushi2016
      @datatsushi2016 3 роки тому

      The human heart has a finite number of beats, the back has a finite number of bends, the joints/tendons have a finite number of shock absorbtion etc, etc. One you reach your quota that is it. Your body will start breaking down.
      How many times do you see runners wearing knee bands because they're injured yet they still keep going? Because these people are addicted to excercise. They think they'll die young if they don't run. When in reality they're destroying their body at a faster rate than non runners. Including their heart.

    just listen to your body. Our early ancestors were very active but most of their activity was likely low intensity (walking and such..) and probably only had to exert themselves a little bit every now and then to run away from predators or chase after prey. I imagine if you are a slow paced jogger or walker it would be hard to over do it , but if you are hitting it hard with weights and high endurance activity, probably easy to exert yourself. Sometimes I do two hours a day but it will be one hour of low intensity / low impact weights , then later in the day 1 hour of something like a hiit workout. I am very sedentary at my job so I need it.

      2 hours of soccer and you can still lift weights 2 hours?? WTF man. Your lifting quality must be shitty and skip leg training. If you are really working hard 2 hours and do drop sets push to failure in compound movements, you are fking done for the day and the next day.
      Plus, 2 hours in the gym for 5 days, what the f do you train? 20 sets of curl? Effective workout just need 2-3 working sets for each body part. If you are doing 5 day split, how do u use 2 hours on a let’s say chest day? Bench 5 sets? Fly 5 sets? Flat dumbbell 5 sets? Incline 5 sets? Dip 5 sets? Later on it’s all become junk volume.
      This is ridiculous.

    The human body is capable of doing more than we think. It's better to aim high and miss, than aim low and hit. Exceed your expectations, etc., etc.

    This is obviously for the weekend warrior. We humans can’t get to much exercise. As primitive hunter gatherers we hunted large game for hours every day. Sometimes not getting a kill which meant no food for the day. Or week. We still have the same body’ as our ancestors. Except now we are surrounded by food. No need to hunt and exert an enormous amount of energy to get the nutrients. Point is we are meant to move every day. We are capable of so much more our bodies endure. Use it or lose it.

    I came because I have been weight lifting for 11 months first time in my life and I get angry way easier. I had no idea that over exercise is counter productive. The saying too much of anything is not good. Nice video 😎

    i think i overexercise at times.. right after meals i go for a light walk or do crunches and leg raises. and just woke up with entire body sore, not that my body isn't sore everyday but today's a little worse. even my hips feel like they're bruised.

    oh "according to the CDC". Well the CDC is crap. If you maintain proper nutrition , you can easily work out 12 to 15 hours a week. There is such thing as training wrong though and if you do not take proper rest do not get proper nutrition, etcetera, it will be bad

    Over training is very rare. It occurs mostly with elite athletes or people who take part in endurance running. The majority of people do not get enough physical activity. Not getting enough exercise is a far greater problem.

    I have to because I binge eat whenever I diet I my body demands 2400-3000 calories and the only way to correct it is burning a thousand calories a day. Honestly I feel fine.
