    Super cool video! In the comparison you could really hear the difference! I prefered the stock on the guitar, because the modded had a bit too much low end for my taste (but I'm sure that could be easily fixed by repositioning the mic). The modded mic really stood out in the vocal test, because it doesn't have the harshness of the stock one anymore!

      Thanks a lot! Yeah the guitar itself is already a fairly dark, warm instrument so does seem to benifit from the brightness of the old capsule. Vocals are really what I changed the capsule to suit anyway :)

    I think the mod gives the sound a vintage vibe, which may or may not be desired. The stock one sounds a bit more natural and open to me, but slightly hyped at the highest frequencies, whilst the modded one has a smoother top end but the high-mids / lower highs sound a bit pronounced or ringy to me. I think it's basically a matter of taste and style which is better.

    Thanks for the video. Listening with Sony MDR-7506 headphones, twice. I don't want to be that guy but I don't see it as an upgrade, just different. The stock on fingerpicking guitar danced around magically in my head. The RK-47 was subdued. I noticed a much clearer midrange on the stock for strummed guitar. The stock for soft vocal had the same delightful articulation. The RK-47 more subdued. The rock vocal was painful, rocks in a blender for both. The voice over was easy on the ears so if that's the goal you made a superbly non irritating vocal mic.

      Yeah. I agree. Its just different. Id say, if you have one of the rodes, don't do this mod. But if you have multiple, and want a different sound in your arsenal(using different sounding mics can help a mix) but want to stick to the transformerless design of the Rode, which far as I know, is the cheapest of its kind, I see no issue going for a mod like this.

    Have a feeling a transformer in the mic with this capsule would make the more intense/gritty vocals sit in a mix super well. Kinda sold on the idea of combining this with their fet transformer circuitry, but at that point a kit or like wa47jr might be at a similar pricepoint- wish I had the experience to know which would fit my needs better =p

  • @aholder4471
    @aholder4471 2 роки тому +3

    So glad you showed it mixed. The whole point of doing this to me would be because a 47 would take eq and compression way better than a stock nt2a. It has a little more low end thar could be muddy, but you kind of want to have so you can pick what to pull out and the top end is more natural, which a lot of people are going to perceive as not as good. But to me, I'd rather be in a place that I had to add some top end to a mic that would take it well then to try to remove harshness. The second you run that already bright nt2a through a compressor it's probably gonna be harsh. A good comparison to add to this would be of both fingerpicking parts after eq and the process to get both of them to sounds the best you could get them. That's what I'd like to see. I wouldn't care if it was perfectly scientific, music production isn't purely scientific anyways.

    Thanks for sharing. Bit of an expensive upgrade though. $170.00 for a new capsule. After buying in from the US and adding delivery cost, import duties and VAT you have likely spent more than what the NT2A cost in the first place. My reasoning would be spend the total cost of the original mic and the upgrade = £450.00 + on a mic that sounds the way you want it to.

    I prefered the origional capsule. But I am 64 and not good hearing. Abused my hearing (Rock Music) from 11 to 40 ish. Plus a mechanic. I think the origional had better highs. But what do I know. Thank you Sir for making this video. I feel depressed now! Why is it always cold in a football stadium. Because there is a Fan on every seat.

    • @PhenixDj
      @PhenixDj 2 роки тому +3

      The original has more highs, not better highs. It's a classic first intuition to choose the brighter mic in a comparison, but it can host a range of troubles when actually starting to mix a bunch of overly bright mics, often the highs in the cheaper mics are also more resonant, so a simple attenuation would decrease the amount of highs, but not the harshness that comes from those resonances. On the other hand, boosting the high end on a really good sounding microphone, will yield much better results.
      I'm a self taught sound/event tech, coming from being a bedroom producer a good while. And when for a long time I also didn't get why Neumann for instance are so popular, when other mics in a comparison sounded more "Hi-Fi" at first, but once you work with them, you understand the difference in qualities. Although I still do believe Schoeps blows out even Neumann from the competition.

      The issue with buying cheap generic capsules is they are just that, generic. You never know what you might be getting and what standards they have been manufactured/calibrated to. My understanding is that mic parts are extremely picky with what they sell and test everything, ensuring only repeatable quality and characteristics that match what you expect from each capsule design. It would possibly be interesting to compare although I suspect it would be down to pot luck with the quality of the cheap capsule. Thanks for checking out the video!

    This is the same stock capsule that's in Rode's K2 tube mic. No cheap capsule so should you change it you are not upgrading merely altering the signal. l would consider doing this if l found a cheap NT2-A with a cap from Peluso or Luke. Maybe Micparts but they don't make their own so why so high a price? Whatever I'm still keeping the NT2-A l have stock.

      You would destroy the capsule by unscrewing the sealed wires on the front and back capsule membranes! They are extremely fragile, lightly gold plated for conductivity, and perfectly tuned by the tension ring (the ring with screws all around each membrane). For the same reason he said do NOT touch the capsule membrane, you, even more so, cannot loosen or tighten the center terminated wires. You would destroy a perfect $169USD + tax capsule.

      @PhenixDj 2 роки тому +1

      @@Pule12345 It doesn't suit the Guitar as well as the old capsule in the position the mic is in on this recording, but it has a smoother high end Response.
      When you'd mix recordings made with the new capsule, and just boost the highs, it will much likely sound a lot smoother than the old one. Also adjusting the positioning that works better with the darker sound will do a lot here.
      It's a classic to prefer the brighter mic at first, but they often have actually more resonant high end, which can't simply be attenuated by normal equalization. Darker mics with smoother Frequency response on the other hand can be very nicely boosted, without falling apart.

      Those are factory reject capsules and imitations. Matt McGlynn is legit. Sure, you can go on Ali Express or wherever and buy “RK-47” capsules for practically nothing - and I’m sure some would sound better than absolute garbage, but they are not built, tested, regulated, and quality controlled. Having designed and built/modded for years, I know from experience who to trust, and there’s a few - Matt McGlynn of MicParts / Roswell is one for sure. Or you could buy a capsule of the same quality, slightly different vibe from Neumann for $500+ USD

      While it may sound more hifi on some sources due to the high frequency hype, it is an unnatural boost that also creates resonances and distortions that both add poorly in a mix and also cannot simply be overcome with corrective EQ, as there’s more than just frequency response causing issues here. Placement and gentle addition to a darker, higher quality capsule will produce much richer results. Some things are a matter of personal taste, sure, but you’ll never find mics voiced like this in strictly commercial applications and settings for the reasons I mentioned.
