  • Testing 14" Macbook Pro M3 Max 14 CPU 30 GPU in 3D Mark, Cinebench and FCPX for temperature, heat throttle and performance.
    Did test again plugged in on high power mode.
    CPU: 1360 points
    Frequency stayed at 3.4 Ghz so not much thermal throttle.

    I got my 14" M3 Max 14/30 two days ago and had many headaches before thinking it was a bad choice because of the thermal issues. Today I can gladly report that all this is nonsense. So far, the fans have never kicked in at any moment. It happily runs through the geekbench tests without going over 50 degrees Celsius. The fans remain even completely off during whatever I do.

    Glad, this is what I wanted to know. I'm not video editor but web developer and was afraid of the loud fans even on binned. Because I will only give it short CPU spikes (basically GPU on lowest), this is good to know. So I can buy it without being pissed of I have returned back to Intel Mac :)

      what do you mean by binned?? i'm confused

    • @ZhuJo99
      @ZhuJo99 9 місяців тому

      @@series25a turned off some cores not performing up to specs. You have only 3 models of M3, basic, Pro and Max. All have two variants, one with reduced core count and other, full ie. Max is 14 cpu/30 gpu cores or 16/40 for full. It's the same chip, but "binned" is the one with turned off cores. This is same die, same processor. Chip makers do this to not throw away otherwise perfect chips as it would be very expensive to produce. Lower versions with turned off cores are perfectly fine.
      Now, I'm aware that PC gamers like to mark "binned" chip as opposite, the best performing chip able to be over locked to highest frequencies possible, but in terms of Apple, it's opposite - lower performant version of same processor. Actually, for 14" it's better to have less performing Max due to heat the full version produce

      But notice how video exporting test never goes above 20% cpu usage. Web development won't really use hardware acceleration and I would say this video is not relevant to your usage.

    • @ZhuJo99
      @ZhuJo99 9 місяців тому +1

      @@hardaqa well yes, but with web development I will never use performance cores to the maximum.
      Anyway, I already decided for M3 Pro, 12 cores, 36/1 TB.
      Easier to sell it every year too which I'm going to do. Less value lost, no need to spend so much money suddenly. And for tax write offs I need that anyway

      I have the 14 inch 16/40 m3 max, in baldurs gate it gets to 90 degrees average, fans slightly above half their speed, i'd say 3/4 their speed (yes they are noticible, u'll need to play with headphones). Playing unplugged drains the battery like crazy. Playing max settings and the game runs smooth all the time.

    Is it really a performance bump up from my M1 Pro where I can basically do the same project in the same time? The only reason that Im upgrading to M3 max is for the 3d tracking performance with Motion vex plugins. rotoscoping also is impractical for more than a few minute 5k raw files for me. Have you tried that on M3 Max? Im sure they're awesome times too.

    • @LucasCreativeTech
      @LucasCreativeTech  9 місяців тому

      I can but just so you know, you will not get any throttle or fans unless you are pushing the chips to the max and in that case, why not just go full power to benefit from what you paid for?

    • @hendriconken4430
      @hendriconken4430 9 місяців тому

      @@LucasCreativeTech I got your point.
      As you have shown, with full load on CPU the fans go also to full speed, but no throttle. But if you like to have less noise, low power mode could be a solution. So you can decide to work or play more silent, or use the full power of the chip.

      I think many of us are debating if we could use a m3max machine as a m3pro but with an option to have extra power in the future, knowing the tradeoffs of noise, battery and thermals between m3pro to to low power mode m3max would be really helpful@@LucasCreativeTech

    Why wouldn't the fans go on more if instead of throttling? Still think it's less hot than the higher unpinned version? Still want to see how much different some of the pros are with temperature/throttling as well :)

    • @LucasCreativeTech
      @LucasCreativeTech  10 місяців тому

      Not sure but I also did a test where I forced the fans to run full blast and it held the frequency at 3.45-3.5 Ghz. If you can keep the overall temperature at 85C, the clocks stay around 3.5-3.6 Ghz. Must be an automatic Mac setting. Realistically, will anyone ever hit such a sustained 100% CPU load to experience this slight drop in speed? You'd have to use specific CPU heavy software
