54:19 Yes please. I'm actually surprised that you haven't made a video on how copyright law is different between Japan and the US. I know it may be boring and tedious but I can assure you that I will watch that even if it's 2 hours long.

I'm not surprised considering the property is owned by four companies at this point (Nintendo, Game Freak, Creatures Inc, And The Pokemon Company International), it's basically it's own governmental system from the US, PLUS the FBI/CIA group associated with Capital Hill in the Pokemon Companies. Game Freak being the White House, The Pokemon Company International being The Judicial Branch, and Creatures Inc. being the House of Representatives (Or it can be the other way around and nintendo would be the judicial branch and Creatures Inc.+ The Pokemon Company International would be the House of Representatives all in one).
A correction about Iwata: he did create a new compression algorithm for Gold and Silver, but the intended aim was not to save storage space. Gold and Silver could accommodate Kanto simply from the fact that the new cartridges were larger (twice the size!), and instead Iwata's new compression algorithm worked *faster*, allowing Pokemon to render on-screen much quicker than in RBY. I remember trying to track this down one day, since it's such a common piece of Pokemon folklore, and the story seems to have arisen from an interview where Iwata was credited and thanked for his work on a compression algorithm, with no further details given. It's likely that readers made the assumption that space-efficiency was the aim of this algorithm, and thus that Iwata must have been solving a storage space issue for Game Freak, with the myth continuing to grow from there.

This is what makes your channel feel unique among a see of other explanatory and retrospective video essays. I really appreciate your work and hope you continue in this manner.
Man, it really is a Dodrio, isn't it? Using a Pokemon as an analogy for a corporate ownership structure isn't what I was expecting, but it kinda works.
@@SJrad After watching the video Hydreigon might be more appropriate given just how much control Nintendo actually has but I think Dodrio is better because of how good Nintendo is at redirecting/obfuscating blame and responsibility. Don't get me wrong there is plenty "going wrong" with the franchise right now that isn't Nintendo's responsibility but it's incredible just how much is Nintendo's responsibility and they have convinced nearly everyone to blame Game Freak or at best The Pokémon Company for something that should in fact fall on Nintendo. Ironically a lot of people think Nintendo will be the Pokémon franchise's saviour when they are the ones who intentional or not pushed for such tight development cycle in the first place. At the end of the day it doesn't matter if people are blaming the "correct" head; all heads are hearing the complaints and I assume internally they are all doing the best they can to address them even if publicly it doesn't seem like it and practically it is going to be many years before we see the effects of their course correction.
A part of me wants to say that the development of Earthbound and the development of Pokemon might have been in roughly the same studio, but also I find it very doubtful that the unfinished, unpublished sequel to Mother 1 mattered compared the clearly purple and white Frieza. Also you’d honestly have better luck convincing me Mew is Gygas. Like, it’s halfway based on an embryo? Real obvious with the Gen 1 spritework
@lancesmith8298 Obviously they're talking about the "GIEGUE" sprite from Earthbound Zero/Mother 1, not the red skull fetus from Earthbound. In that one he's white with long ears and a tail and sits in a liquid-filled tank, much like Mewtwo upon its creation.
To me, the most clear Mother reference in Pokémon is when you find an old man who talks incomprehensively, so you have to search for his denture, and then you find it near a sign that says "If you see my teeth, bring them back" Of course, the joke is funnier in Mother
Music in Pokemon properties somehow can't access each other; we see that with Pokemon Masters, a gacha game which had Ash at one point using music from the anime, yet after the promotional period, stopped using it despite being licensed from TPC - IMO the music is probably owned by Warner Music who TPC "buys" from them to use in the movie IMO (and Warner Music still gets royalties when the music is kept being used IMO).
In the case of “The Power Of One” specifically, that song has a “Nintendo of America” copyright (as do most songs written or re-written for the first two movies), so there you go. Explains everything, right? 😉 of course, owning the copyright doesn’t mean all the royalties go there, depending on the laws in each territory, where the song is being used, etc., which is its own topic. Oh, and don’t forget the song is based on score elements from the movie itself.
@@pokepress Owning the composition of the song and owning the recording of the song are two different things. They could own both, but that's another thing to consider.
If you see all the big push that Nintendo is making here in Brazil, it feels like we are really at the grasp of having pokemon fully localized in portuguese, or even in them having a pokemon center in sao paulo (the true dream to finally get official merchidise easily). If am not mistaken, before X was banned here, people even found out that they werr setting up an official pokemon brazil account just like the official Nintendo one
41:10 Iwata didn't compress the data. He made a line of code that sped up the game's speed. Very common misconception spawning from a mistranslated article nearly two decades old at this point.

That story of Kanto only fitting on the GS cartridge because Iwata helped out is a myth, btw. While he did work on the compression for that game, his changes actually COST space, as they were about speeding up decompression. There is a long and well-argued and -sourced Reddit post about it, for anyone who wants to know more.
@@costby1105Yup, all of the overworld assets are left decompressed as well in the game as well a lot of redundant or outright unused assets still being in the game that could've been trimmed if they desperate for space.
@Shalakor Yes, while Iwata didn't exactly make the game's size smaller, it did optimize certain aspects of the game much smoother, which is impressive for a GBC game with that content IMO.

Also a couple of them got approved for Catholicism, in spite of goofy things like “giant talking cross praises Jesus”, and are known as the Apocrypha.
@@lancesmith8298If anything, some of the canon stuffs are closer to fanfiction, though. @@lancesmith8298 So this is a common misconception, we have no records from the Council of Nicaea that the canon was even discussed - only vague hints from Jerome. Interesting to know. So game freak and Creature's inc, are kinda like companies that pay tributes to Nintendo. Nintendo has the funding and political power, but the other two have weaker positions, and were given the IP details to manage. Sheesh. This goes to show how fragile IP Laws are worldwide, especially in regard to what Nintendo has “Golden Eggs”. Microsoft has Minecraft, Sony has…erm…something, but Nintendo has to manage some of gaming’s most beloved IP on top of a juggernaut like Pokemon. I still believe the Pokemon Company does share some fault here, but ultimately I can understand why Nintendo has to be this defensive. These IP laws just don’t cut it anymore and being lax like what Sega does with Sonic has consequences. In regards of the games, perhaps that’s why the expansion building for Nintendo in general is being built for more leg room for their IPs. Who knows, but the takeaway from this is managing Pokemon is a Herculean effort.

While Nintendo definitely has the most control over Pokemon compared to the other two (and has some level of direct control over Creatures, with strong push over gamefreak but not direct control of any sort), I think the video also does minimize to a certain extent the autonomy of TPCi itself. TPCi might need to bow to Nintendo (as well as gamefreak and creatures to some extent as well) when direct conflict occurs, it does have some ability to make decisions without purely being bound to Nintendo policy. As an example, Pokemon was making mobile games a decent amount of time before Nintendo had it's own mobile game program with stuff like Mario Run or Fire Emblem Heroes. If it was just apps like Pokedex 3D it'd be one thing, but some of these were full fledged mobile game. And given the head at the time specifically talked in interviews multiple times about not having a ton of faith in Nintendo's console business and the switch's potential, I feel like the initiative was largely led by TPCi itself. Nintendo definitely could've vetoed it of course, but it likely wasn't a policy push coming from them. I think in general Nintendo probably doesn't do much directly to micromanage the Pokemon Company except when they have specific things they want to happen, or things they specifically don't want to happen are going on. I think when it comes to legal management, it's not a direct result of Nintendo setting the policy, they have their own lawyers who don't need to get the ok from Nintendo at all times for literally everything. That said, if their policy caused issues for Nintendo, Nintendo would likely intervene directly, and the desire to avoid that could even cause the legal team to be overzealous on issues where Nintendo might be more lax themselves
I do agree that I notice some distance with how TPC does its licensing over how Nintendo does itself...if Nintendo has significant power over TPC I have to assume the Pokemon mobile games would have some part from the Nintendo Mobile division but they usually dont; the most Nintendo involvement that I know is the use of Nintendo accounts for personal details and save data.
In all fairness, Nintendo likely didn't intervene with TCPi's plans to port Pokemon to mobile (in case the Switch was a dud) because Nintendo themselves doesn't see it as a direct competitor like Sony's Playstation is.
It's worth keeping in mind that the vast majority of TPC's revenue comes from merchandise. The games, anime, etc. exist in service of the real money maker.
I would be super interested in a US vs Japan IP video... but I'm also working under a US patent lawyer (studying up for the Patent Bar!) for the US arm of JP conglomerate. So, uh, I might be slightly more interested in it than the average viewer. Love your stuff!

Yes! I was hoping for this one! I was aware of the general gist of it (including that Itoi was involved in some way) but the details of the web I didn't quite know. I remember it was one of those "juicy funfacts" around my school that "did you know that HAL was actually related to Pokemon??" (it usually came up because of Smash Bros) but it took YEARS for me to actually and look up what the deal was. "Pokemon is more complicated than god" is one quote I won't forget for a while.
FYI: The Power Of One was never officially associated with the Olympics. It may have been played there, and according to my interview with Mark Chait, NBC used it in some highlight reels. Interestingly, one of the other songs on the soundtrack, “The Extra Mile”, WAS intended for the 2000 Olympics, but apparently was turned down.
The only issue I have with this is that it GREATLY implies that Nintendo is behind many of what the community considers Pokemon's bad gameplay decisions, or that the game's quality was due to Nintendo's fault. **Considering Nintendo had to publicly apologize for Scarlet and Violet's poor optimization not long after release,** it's hard to say that poor overworked GameFreak simply took the blame while big boss Nintendo snickered in the corner. Especially when there are plenty of interviews that showcase that GameFreak's choices in the "international Era" - That I've dubbed because 2013 was when Pokemon games released internationally all at once instead of released first then a translation later on - are deliberate in scope: no hard mode toggle and forced experience share was because their target demographic is kids with low attention spans in the mobile era of games, they want kids to easily complete a game and are fighting that attention span with easy to access mobile games. While their optimization issues could also stem from just how poor their coding is. Remember Iwata was the genius that helped Pokemon Gold and Silver have Kanto, yet after the International Era started and Iwata was absent with Pokemon especially after his death Pokemon has gotten so bloated even in the expanse of being forced to be a console series - to the point that they decided to cut Pokemon out in order to likely save data and it shows even with Scarlet and Violet that it doesn't work with optimization. It doesn't help that GameFreak likes to divide their small staff for other projects which I'd argue really cuts against a game's optimization. There was even a point when Pokemon's CEO told Nintendo the Switch would be a flop in the mobile era, and while GameFreak was likely forced to make a console Pokemon game, which I believe Nintendo helped with Let's Go Pikachu and Eevee in order to get a game out in 2018, it's possible that Pokemon likely would've gone completely mobile had Sword and Shield not proven to sell well, or that Ishihara wasn't convinced the Switch was a seller.
"Imagine the horrors of a world in which every Pokemon...is Lopunny." Well...we live in a world in which every Pokemon _might as well_ be Lopunny, given how online fanart tends, so I doubt my willful suspension of disbelief will get a good workout from this one, but alright, here goes... _...Ooh!_

I guess my only question is that if Nintendo has so much power and control in so many nitty gritty teeny ways, then how can they simultaneously be the one most likely calling for GameFreak’s ridiculous release schedule while they have a habit of having games completed and sitting on them until “the time is right.” How is it there are so many instances of not milking franchises in the same way. There are definitely instances where this did happen, especially in the earlier days what with the rushed development of stuff like Majora’s Mask and Smash Melee. But these days it seems like the only subsidiary not getting the developmental leeway that say The Legend of Zelda or Kirby or anything else is getting is the Pokémon Company. And so much of their money is coming out of merch and so many other things that Game Freak has the least amount of incentive to keep pumping out games. The games are the least of their profits. They could be left alone for five years the same way new Zelda Games are usually a twice-per-console (I’m including handhelds) affair. I mean, I know the answer is capitalism but capitalism is already doing so much heavy lifting in all other aspects.
Nintendo probably just lets them I assume, because it hasn't been to a point of "undisgraceful" (even though I might think it has been). I agree it's out of character from Nintendo to allow a product they have a lot of influence to have a lot of unatisfied backlash (they are usually "squeaky clean"), but maybe this is where GF had some objections that Nintendo just lets them be. Some interviews coming from Masuda himself say that TPC and Nintendo lets GF has its autonomy, and unless Masuda is lying (which to be fair, the Dexit debacle shows that there is doubt with him) then de jure Nintendo doesn't influence GF's decisions as much for Pokemon. I have to finish the video, just to see the argument though (although I know Nintendo part-owns Creatures so it isn't true 1/3 each).
Ok, I watched it to the end, and it mostly says Nintendo has the most influence in how the Pokemon brand is being managed over all. Interestingly I don't disagree to that, but I do disagree that they are the ones telling GF to release games each year against their will. As you said it is out of character for Nintendo to rush games and they will typically want the games to have as less drama attracted as there is. But even with the backlash of games even since LGPE (many felt it was too basic for a $60 game) I don't seemingly think Nintendo cares to change it per se. IMO Game Freak has the final say for game design decisions and also game management, but they would need to defer it to Nintendo, which Nintendo for the post part seems to allow them. If stuff like National Dex, much less glitches in a game, return of certain features, and longer development times, I think I agree it should be directed to Nintendo. Not to put responsibility on them, but rather using their power to pressure Game Freak to have certain standards met before releasing a game.
Because it's just speculation from him. When you compare pokemon games and Nintendo games be it developed by Nintendo or not there's a large difference
Pokemon has the unique issue of needing to align the games with the TGC, with the anime, with the manga. If one thing gets delayed all of them get delayed. Given the amount of tie-ins and whatnot, that is kinda problematic.
Genuinely, this is one of the channels I am most happy exists on youtube. In the age of content slop, Moon channel is thoughtful, unique, and educational while also being actually entertaining. Helps that they don't plagiarize as well. Incidentally, bold choice to use the phrase "of the same substance of" in the intro. Certain people would seek to crucify casual use of the phrase "homoousian". The council of Nicaea called.
The Iwata thing for Gold/Silver is actually a misconception, the algorithm he created was related to the speed of the game and not the size, Kanto making it in was unrelated to that but without him the games would likely be noticeably slower so his contribution is different but still valuable

another good video thank you, I think the script was really good actually, the little jokes helped to break up the pace and while I've seen it done before, I think the VSauce style intro of the topic where you start with something unrelated and then having it come back full circle in the ending is always satisfying. i would like to say that I still feel that the siivagunner music is incredibly distracting, as I'm trying to process a lot of information, while I feel it is explained well, at the same time the siivagunner mashups of 2 songs I know at the same time makes it hard to focus on it. I think it is specifically the mashups as half the time my brain is trying to figure out the joke and the other half it is hearing 2 songs mashed together and unwillingly attempting to separate them. I've expressed this sentiment before but I understand if I am the minority, I think if you used regular music the volume balancing with your admittedly warm, low and smooth voice would be adequate. thanks for this video as I have been interested in this topic tor a while!

See, after watching DYKG's many videos on pokemon, I already figured that Nintendo was still top dog. In fact, my thought, based on interviews, was that while all three shared TPCI, Nintendo was using TPCI to pressure or meddle in Game Freak's affairs. This video just further proves my conclusion. My main beef was always "why do the devs, the people making the games, have to answer to the marketing/promotions people, the people reliant on said games and characters to be made in order to do their job?" It's just weird. And here's the answer in all it's ridiculous logic. Game Freak really got a bad deal.
I do think Nintendo has most influence but do you genuinely believe they're the ones telling them to release games yearly when it isn't in their typical behavior (if we are to treat Game Freak as de facto Nintendo first party)?
@@zjzr08 I mean, if the interviews are to believed, then we'd have gotten a better gen 6 game than what we got no thanks to corporate meddling to keep the games "safe". I do think Nintendo treats their first party studios differently from their second party studios. They have absolute control over their first party studios so naturally, there wouldn't be any crunch time (they'll always adjust if needed). For second party studios, they only have a degree of control and I'm willing to believe they are on a tighter leash because of that. Game Freak's a special case because of pokemon. They're making sure they have their golden goose in check. Game Freak isn't first party from what I know. If it was, we wouldn't even be having this discussion probably.
@@nicodalusong149 It was a time where the 3DS struggled to get footing so maybe it was a desparate booster shot for Nintendo, but before that, Iwata has been very involved with Pokemon I notice, and maybe more direct in involvement than what we have now IMO.
Nintendo, if they were directly meddling in game freak's affairs, we'd have much better quality games from gamefreak than we do, that's the one thing Nintendo cares about a lot, quality, and experimentation, and that's not what gamefreak does usually, heck, tbf, they maybe only made legends arceus because nintendo forced them to stop making nothing but slop for a bit, so their IP would stop getting associated with sloppy and broken messes The model of constantly pumping out yearly, if anyone is likely to blame, it'd be creatures, more than nintendo, given that Nintendo hates that exact type of model, but it makes sense for gamefreak's middle management to pull this actually

Eh, I'll continue to use TPC for shorthand for management and Gamefreak for shorthand for ground level devs. After all, it's why the The Pokemon Company was made... to manage the Pokemon IP. And given how most of my complaints stem from how things are managed.... yeah.
@@encapturer Except there difference and most people show by your comment don't know or understand what each company do. Which is why this video will hopefully cover the difference. GameFreak are a game development company, they make the game of pokemon. They are not just the ground level dev's. They handle everything from planning and producing. That why Masuda job title used to be 'Director' at GameFreak during most of the production. Because he is helming the game. (Note Game Director is different from Movie and TV director.) TPC handles everything that isn't the games. Such as the publishing, marketing, licensing of everything pokemon. They handle the card games, anime, manga, film and much more. The only time TPC are involved with the game is to handle publishing, marketing, licensing of the game. And most cases, they don't do much because a lot of the choice would made by GameFreak. The choice of when to release the game or age rating would be done by GameFreak first, they then tell TPC which allows them to start making marketing for the game. Gamefreak also owns TPC. TPC are not shorthand for management, they do much much more then that and are own by Gamefreak. Gamefreak are not shorthand for ground level devs, they manage and produce the game themselves.

Game Freak owns a share and the general soft agreement between the involved parties is that as long as Game Freak can regularly output new generations, they can have effective control over the future of the IP. Nintendo can dislodge Game Freak if they were a considerable disaster that needed to be replaced for new entries. Despite the technical defects, Scarlet and Violet are the best performing entries since the originals and the IP is in its strongest phase is associated materials so, there is no need for those drastic moves but in the case of actually broken game or a game taking more than 5 years, there might be a need to do so.
OK, watching the video, there is a summary that says that Moon cannot confirm or deny if Nintendo directly mandates Game Freak, but it has the power to do so. I don't disagree with this possible reality, but I also think that based on info that we do know that game wise that Nintendo (and TPC) does give GF a lot of autonomy in making their Pokemon games. So in essense it is true Nintendo has the most influence among the 3 in the conglomerate, they just let GF be IMO. That being said it also reinforces that Nintendo doesn't care about blunders GF made as long as it seems to get them money - I don't think they directly impose a yearly schedule, but they neither stop GF (game directors in particular) from doing it IMO.
This is an awesome video but it also made me sad because it reminded me just how incredible satoru iwata was, this man single handedly saved not only gamefreak and pokemon but also earthbound and many other legendary games like smash bros, while also being instrumental to growing the pokemon brand and Nintendo as a whole, what a damn legend, rest in peace.

This is one of those topics that lives rent free in my head. I knew most of what was brought up, but the smaller nuances behind the IP being put in a neat and tidy order really helps bring things into focus. Though still not a 100% confirmed, I do believe that Nintendo being the "main head" behind this collaboration makes the most sense. Also just wanted to point out that DYKG stated about a year or so ago that Iwata didnt personally work on the code for any pokemon games. He made an algorithm that was used in Earthbound to help speed up the game in certain places. That same algorithm was applied to Gold and Silver. The real reason Game Freak was able to fit the entire game on a single cartridge is because they were allowed to use a Megabyte cartridge which was double the size of other Gameboy games at the time. Iwata did help a lot clearly, but the rumor about him single handedly making the games fit onto the cartridge arent true.

Did You Know Gaming also debunked this common misconception in their Pokemon Gold & Silver Facts video from October 2023.

Mother, Pokemon, Undertale, share some strange DNA.
Also, Mewtwo has more in common with Gygas than with Freeza.

Obviously they're talking about the "GIEGUE" sprite from Earthbound Zero/Mother 1, not the red skull fetus from Earthbound. In that one he's white with long ears and a tail and sits in a liquid-filled tank, much like Mewtwo upon its creation.
To me, the most clear Mother reference in Pokémon is when you find an old man who talks incomprehensively, so you have to search for his denture, and then you find it near a sign that says "If you see my teeth, bring them back"

Who the hellhas the ip pokemon us held?! Maybe?!
Pretty much, there's also tpc talking about support for switch or how they thought switch would fail. Tpc has a lot of independence
@@Dakress23except that Nintendo themselves don't do it and tpc has put games on pc and mobile like in 2014

"Imagine the horrors of a world in which every Pokemon...is Lopunny."
Well...we live in a world in which every Pokemon _might as well_ be Lopunny, given how online fanart tends, so I doubt my willful suspension of disbelief will get a good workout from this one, but alright, here goes...
_...Ooh!_
"Well welcome to Moon Channel" Yeah, my exact thoughts at that moment were "No I wasn't expecting it, but I am not event remotely surprised."

The Pokémon franchise might have the most complicated business relationship in the entire industry.
what about the enlightened few among us who already knew that gary was based off miyamoto and already thought that he and satoshi tajiri should kiss in real life. didn't consider that one huh moonie
15:27 Such a Gex moment. You know want I like about Gex? Consistency!
That’s so f*ckin’ Gex.
HOUR LONG MOON CHANNEL VIDEO LETS GOOOOOOO
(Love you moon channel :D)
I'd like to see the comparisons between IP laws across the countries.
here here!
Yes, there are German IP laws which have their own equivalent of the public domain, but tend not to have fair dealing. Australia is a commonwealth country which also has both a life plus 70 term and its own public domain, but features fair dealing as a decent response to infringement instead, as with India and the UK.
I love that as I was making a Trinitarianism joke in my head, you went and used that same comparison. It's a useful point of reference, even if TPC isn't one in practice
I remember the days when Moon Channel made Mother 3 copyright videos. Man this channel has been a ride.
I enjoy your content Moon. Your work in these videos has made a great impact. If not in all of ours but in my life.
I mean, Dodrio is cool and all… And it’s gen1. I get it.
But Hydreigon is right there if you wanted to do the Ghidorah meme. Come oooooooon. The dark dragon muppet deserves more love.
I did consider it but I needed imagery that did not ostensibly imply one head was the "main" one, that would just not be accurate to the situation. I do love the dark dragon muppet though!
That’s a fair point, I’ll concede. I don’t regret sticking up for my little guy though. He’s had it rough since the fairies attacked…
@@louritashineI mean a big portion of the video was about Nintendo pulling the strings of the whole operation
@@usernametaken017 That is correct! But it wouldn't be any fun if we presented the answer too obviously
From what I know the other 2 Hydreigon heads are also kinda "dead" so they don't function the same as what a Dodrio does IMO.
The wit in this video was off the charts - love it! I give it a non-euclidian hyperbolic triangle out of 22!
IP laws explanation are probably the main reason I watch hours long video from this channel. That and your historical tangent LOL.
It’s not a schedule it’s brand synergy
Each branch of the series is interlinked to one another
Pokemon has the unique issue of needing to align the games with the TGC, with the anime, with the manga.
If one thing gets delayed all of them get delayed. Given the amount of tie-ins and whatnot, that is kinda problematic.
9:39 "You see, in the year 325 AD..."
56:09 "The year is 325 AD"
Moon that Brick Joke was immaculately set up.
15:33 get yourself that vacation man!
15:26 and 59:03 for the gex the gecko cameos, for anyone who wants to re-find them.
so... you hear about the Palworld patent infringement thing?
The Iwata thing for Gold/Silver is actually a misconception, the algorithm he created was related to the speed of the game and not the size, Kanto making it in was unrelated to that but without him the games would likely be noticeably slower so his contribution is different but still valuable
Mitt Romney history being referred to as ancient history when it's like 10 years ago hurt.
But continue.
Still can't believe he strapped Fidough to the roof of a car.
So... as Moony suggested, did you schedule your colonoscopy?
Reminder that Displate has created a system that supports art theft. They do not "officially" allow it and will remove stolen works at the request of an artist, but anybody can upload images and each one of those requests need to be individually filed.
Thank you for this! I know you were reluctant to make it :3
Moony, you have to understand, some people find the inane intricacies of law just as fascinating as you do but simply couldn't get into law school because we come from poverty backgrounds XD
I'd have been a lawyer if I could have, but I'll settle for being educated and educating others in turn on the second most important legal framework in the world right now (behind human rights) known as "copyright law".
I could write a PhD thesis on the semiotics of that Vaporeon PNG in Moon’s videos.
I honestly think the symbols this channel uses have gotten away from me at some point, and now I'm somehow having trouble figuring out what something as straightforward as vaporeon represents despite the obvious joke. When it started showing up on the diagrams all my brain could do was go "oh look, there's pictures of pokemon!"
I was so taken aback this video, never before have I been so compelled into shouting “Moonie!?” At a quip or transition since I’d first subscribed. Such a treat.
I have been catholic all my life. When the tangent about the trinity of God came up I giggled. When the bit continued I smiled. But now, at the end, I understand. Now i know the truth.
Both Pokemon and Catholicism are ruled by one thing: Thick, Long, Throbbing Neck.
another good video thank you, I think the script was really good actually, the little jokes helped to break up the pace and while I've seen it done before, I think the VSauce style intro of the topic where you start with something unrelated and then having it come back full circle in the ending is always satisfying. i would like to say that I still feel that the siivagunner music is incredibly distracting, as I'm trying to process a lot of information, while I feel it is explained well, at the same time the siivagunner mashups of 2 songs I know at the same time makes it hard to focus on it. I think it is specifically the mashups as half the time my brain is trying to figure out the joke and the other half it is hearing 2 songs mashed together and unwillingly attempting to separate them. I've expressed this sentiment before but I understand if I am the minority, I think if you used regular music the volume balancing with your admittedly warm, low and smooth voice would be adequate. thanks for this video as I have been interested in this topic tor a while!
...am I hearing a match up of coffin dance and emotion for pokemon b&w?
you could make a video talking about anything law related that interests you and i would eat that shit up. Seeing one of your smooth voiced law nerding videos cross my path is one of the greatest joys in life
See, after watching DYKG's many videos on pokemon, I already figured that Nintendo was still top dog.
And yet none of that goes to other Nintendo series only pokemon isn't that funny?
Nintendo, if they were directly meddling in game freak's affairs, we'd have much better quality games from gamefreak than we do, that's the one thing Nintendo cares about a lot, quality, and experimentation, and that's not what gamefreak does usually, heck, tbf, they maybe only made legends arceus because nintendo forced them to stop making nothing but slop for a bit, so their IP would stop getting associated with sloppy and broken messes
The model of constantly pumping out yearly, if anyone is likely to blame, it'd be creatures, more than nintendo, given that Nintendo hates that exact type of model, but it makes sense for gamefreak's middle management to pull this actually
Definitely want that vid on US vs JP IP law. Also, I caught that melodic coffin dance, and I was beyond confused when I did.
As a Pokemon and IP law enthusiast, this was a great video to watch. I commend your ability to present the complicated field of IP and Pokemon to your audience. The Christian theology analogy is brilliant.
36:08 Oh wow, I think I still have that shiny Pokeball and gold Poliwhirl card somewhere.
No I am not at colonoscopy age yet I was born in ‘92, but I appreciate the warning.
Hopefully this video will dispel the idea that people seem to have that the Pokemon Company is control of Gamefreak…
Despite the Pokemon Company being a child company of GameFreak with having a percentage in the company
(Note Game Director is different from Movie and TV director.)
TPC handles everything that isn't the games.
@@lukestarford7608 Nintendo are the ones who decide the release date. Game Freak may have negotiation power to eek out an extra year of dev time while another company handles a spin-off, but ultimately nintendo needs to line its pockets and they're gonna do so quality be damned, especially when they have nothing to lose by using TPC and Game Freak as a shield for any reputation hits.
@@lukestarford7608 The actual IP is under the control of the The Pokemon Company/Nintendo.
The dolphin leaving to watch jacob geller taking the vaporeon then coming back later was a funny gag
Bravo bravo! What an extremely well crafted video. Thank you very much for doing all of this research and compiling it into a palatable video essay.
Moony gets more and more unhinged as we allow him to sidetrack his thoughts. Not unlike Tim Rodgers or Hbomberguy. I mean, that Jump reference was pretty on point.

Sir, you are an investigation monster, and I mean that in the most respectable way possible. The fact that you read the anual share holding release from nintendo is just another level of depth. I am forever grateful to have such a knowledgeable man sharing his knowledge with us mortals.
As a Pokemon fan and casual spectator of the beautifully horrible web that is US law, being algorithmically served this channel has been amazing. That IP law video sounds grimly compelling ^_^ love the work!
Man I really would love to see that Nintendo American Copyright law differences video. I

Jesus dude, the comment about the parents whose children died from the burger king pokeballs is really disrespectful. *Bowls* and *cups* don't form airtight suctions around children's faces.
I’ve never understood why Game Freak were the ones getting pounded, even with my previous understanding of the TPC being wrong. They’re shown they can make good games before, I don’t get why people thought it was all their fault all the sudden that the games took a quality dip.
Might need to rework the Palworld script
This is kind of unrelated, but at 54:27 I just couldn’t focus on what you were saying cause the little monster in me IMMEDIATELY recognized Poker Face by Gaga with the Gen 5 soundfont, and I’m OBSESSED!
