With the jewelers torch the heat was rising a LOT faster than with propane so after getting to ~300° I just started watching the rod for signs of heat, definitely didnt want heat to rise too fast and accidentally melt through my part. lol

Doesn't aluminum welding rods have a melting point of 750F your part was only at 300F at the hottest point. According to your meter.
