Don't know if it's still there but there used to be a wrecked F4U Corsair and some Quonset Huts on the NE end of the runway. We did FEX's (Field Exercises) out there ... (6:14) That is a look at one of the landing beach's from WWII, near the villages of Santa Rita and Agat ... (7:04) The Lake in the jungle is Fena Lake ... (7:34) Where you took the left turn to look at the lake you were just about above Mount Lamlam, the highest point on Guam with 3 crosses on top of it. I climbed up there back in about '87-'89, it's covered in Sword Grass ... (8:04) Guam's National Wildlife Refuge, contains the only wild heard of Water Buffalo (Locals call 'em Carabo) left on the island, they shit everywhere ... (8:27) The "Old Hangers" by Fena Lake, are actually earthen explosives bunkers, part of the Naval Magazine area, yeah they store bombs out there and have the explosives range out there as well. Fought a wildfire out there back in jeeze '87-'89? It was small, but a fire in the Mag Area is never good! ... (9:36) "Little Reef" is the Glass break water, protecting Apra Harbor, also known as the outer harbor ... (10:22) The tank farm (seen to the left) caught on fire during Super Typhoon Pongsona, Dec '97. I believe 6 of the tanks burned and they held the entire islands fuel supply, yeah, it sucked for awhile ... (10:27) National Historical Park is also a landing beach from WWII, on Asan Beach. Close by are the Piti Bomb Holes (Spoiler Alert, they are not "real" bomb holes) ... (11:22) Yes, there is a small scale version of the Statue of Liberty, it is in Paseo De Susana Park. Also home to Chamorro Village, huge tourist destination and Great BBQ. Not shown is the Paseo Baseball Park ... (14:05) To the left is the old Naval Air Station Guam, now de-commissioned and turned over to GovGuam ... ( 22:32) "What's that?" Glad you asked. It's the Naval Communications Telecommunications Station Guam and Double Reef Beach or Haputo Beach, home of Tweeds Cave. Navy guy who escaped capture by the Japanese during their invasion. Bunch of bombers deployed there, I've seen B52's, B1's and B2's. Yesteryear, bombing runs into Vietnam and today into Afghanistan. Cap now you guys have to recreate those long missions those guys in the mustangs flew to escort the b29’s when they bombed the Japanese mainland. Basically you have to fly for 8 hours (that’s how long the missions were). Pretty please with sugar on top

Big "golf balls" at 22:33 are part of the Naval Computing and Telecommunications System. They protect big satellite communications dishes from severe weather. We have similar domes (for a different reason) near where I live.
The Golf Ball domes are communication stations. That part of the island was a Navy base known as NAVCAMS (Navel Communication Area Master Station). All communications to US warships in the Pacific flowed thru NAVCAMS on Guam. I was stationed there from 91-92 as part of Marine Barracks, Security Forces, Marianas Islands. We provided security for NAVCAMS and the Navel Magazines further south. Those bases were closed in '92 due to base realignment and force reduction after the Gulf war
It (A.B. Won Pat International Airport) used to be called Naval Air Station Agana and the Guam International Airport. It was penciled into the July 1993 BRAC Commission at the last minute by the Guam Senator who was on the committee.
ED really did a great job finding the only 1000km x 1000km region of the world with roughly 10 square meters of land to model a free map for. Seriously did they really need to make that much ocean if there is NOTHING there at all? At least we can do some island scenarios on a free map. Or we could if the frame rate wouldn't be abysmal even on decent hardware.

Ohhhh yes. Anyone trying to make an ocean based mission will be thrilled. It was four days ago I made a naval action in the middle of the Black Sea, to simulate an ocean battle. I did learn that it takes 92 Harpoon missiles to get through that defense. 6 flights of Hornets.
Great Vid, I was instantly on here watching because i currently live on the island of Saipan. The game has recreated it very accurately. The little island you were talking about moving Reaper HQ to is named Managaha pronounced Man-ya-ga-ha. it's a resort beach twice as beautiful in real life. The place you called Pizza Hut aka Saipan International Airport was also recreated very accurately in that the 6 Jetways are missing from the departure terminal just as they are in real life, that is because they were completely ripped off of the terminal building by Typhoon Yutu. Great Map , I'll be flying over my house in no time. By the way, the pizza way out here isn't bad at all. it is better than Papa John's

There used to be a wrecked B-52 in between the end of the runways on Andersen and one of the roads on base. It got wrecked in a storm and they just shoved it off with a dozer or something and left it. Wonder if that shows up.

Looks really good. I did some flying around tinian island and got pretty bad performance at 2k with everything on lowest setting XD. Was hoping it would be better than other maps do to it being mostly water, but i was wrong. I can at least get ok performance at 1080p with everything on minimum(decent enough for me to want to come back). But hey, isnt the vulcan api update around the corner?
Assuming DCS gets around to adding WW II aircraft carriers and some of the naval planes from that era (the F6F Hellcat comes immediately to mind), you could do a great mission as the Grim Reapers - the name of the fighter squadron from the USS Enterprise, CV-6.
I must say, although I hate Razbam like a bad hang over, the Harrier is one of sexiest planes out there. I don't even have a historical connection to it really, I just love A-G jets with quirks and bubble canopies :) Cant WAIT to fly it over these beautiful islands in VR. ALSO, and Im not being a schmooozer because I dont even watch GR very often but... The Orion is the best HOTAS for the money hands down. Virpil is a competitor for sure but winwing has better value at the moment. Absolutely stoked that I can bolt on a collective and learn how to fly whirly birds properly without rebuilding my setup

The Japanese civilians had been told by the Japanese army that the Americans would eat them and so to avoid being eaten they threw themselves off of cliffs rather than be taken. The army had told them this in an attempt to get them to fight but by the time of the suicides, most of the men had already been killed during to invasion so the ones left alive were women and children. To save their children from being eaten, mothers threw them over the cliffs and then followed them.
Those aren’t hangers, I believe they’re quonset huts. While it’s possible to use them as hangers for a single piston engine fighter, they were typically used as barracks.
Thank you for this. I have a technical question: I can see the map and chose it, but can not fly the Su25 or P51 on the map. Free Flight will not give an option to fly on the Marianas map. Nor does any Create Mission allow me to fly on it. Do I need to buy another airplane or a mission or any other DLC to fly on it? Steam edition. Thank you

The golf ball things spread around look like "RAF" Menwith Hill near Harrogate in Yorkshire. Similar to the old "RAF" Fylingdales in the North Yorkshire Moors, once three massive golf balls now replaced by an enigmatic pyramid standing proud in an otherwise barren moorland landscape. All in reality strategic US ballistic missile defence and covert communications interception bases. For a Cap bonus point they are technically geodesic domes if you should ever need to test their structural integrity with some high explosive delivered from on high.
Absolutely the worst game for your back, rotation cuff injuries guaranteed to have you in the doctor before age 50 if you play often. I speak from work experience...tons of golfers with the same back injury.

My father corrected me, back AND shoulders (he's a doc). Rotator cuff is a set of shoulder tendons greatly stressed by a golf swing. The back injury is from leaning over a golf ball and pinching the soft discs in the spine, then rapidly swinging, grinding it down over time. Yeah, I was never a fan of it when I was younger, but then my older cousin took up the game, to which my dad warned him against. Sure enough, 10 years later... 😕

@All: hey wassup. i am fairly new to DCS and i watch your vids to learn and for laughs(ROFLMFAO) : ) from time to time you guys try some stunts to see if theory matches virtual-reality(ex, the Top Gun canopy to canopy thing). ever since i started wit flight sims(F22 lighting-wish i still had a win 95 computer) i have always wondered if a fuel-tank(empty or not) could be used to get a bandit off your six. is there any way possible you guys could demonstrate this??? i am waiting your response : P

When did BIGNEWY say that!? I assumed before the map dropped that it is, like Caucasus, meant to last years and demonstrate their latest capabilities and what the newest and near future graphics tech can do. So in that case a significant proportion of us are going to struggle to run it. It's not a bad thing, it's inevitable that you and I will eventually need to upgrade our PCs.
@mi24sturm good for you. I've spent thounsands of dollars on my hardware over the last years to run DCS. I upgraded my system regularly to keep up with the developement but if you can't play DCS in VR with a 3090 and 64GB RAM smoothly then the bottleneck is definitely not on my end but on ED's coding. It's crap. period.
Missed opportunity here. Should have had everyone grab a chopper or warbird for this, planes that are good at slow and low. Nice opportunity to show off your Hinds and look more closely at the sights! I enjoyed the sightseeing none the less, good video!

Saipan is my favourite island. A good place for a very rich CSAT equivalent if DCS would make it.

You should have access to it with any configuration. You have Open Beta version yes?

The golf ball things spread around look like "RAF" Menwith Hill near Harrogate in Yorkshire. Similar to the old "RAF" Fylingdales in the North Yorkshire Moors, once three massive golf balls now replaced by an enigmatic pyramid standing proud in an otherwise barren moorland landscape. All in reality strategic US ballistic missile defence and covert communications interception bases. Rotator cuff is a set of shoulder tendons greatly stressed by a golf swing. The back injury is from leaning over a golf ball and pinching the soft discs in the spine, then rapidly swinging, grinding it down over time.
Yeah, I was never a fan of it when I was younger, but then my older cousin took up the game, to which my dad warned him against. Sure enough, 10 years later... 😕

I always force rads open now on all warbirds. Never had a problem since. Lose a few mph.

@All: hey wassup. i am fairly new to DCS and i watch your vids to learn and for laughs(ROFLMFAO) : ) from time to time you guys try some stunts to see if theory matches virtual-reality(ex, the Top Gun canopy to canopy thing). ever since i started wit flight sims(F22 lighting-wish i still had a win 95 computer) i have always wondered if a fuel-tank(empty or not) could be used to get a bandit off your six. is there any way possible you guys could demonstrate this??? i am waiting your response : P

Yes, there is a significant fps drop in this map. It is barely playable in VR.
I had quite a lot of jerking BUT there were 25 reapers all together so maybe not a fair test?
the performance of the map is crap. as DCS is since 2.7. Eye-candy only. Performance nowhere. DCS is what BIGNEWY said: a DEAD END.
When did BIGNEWY say that!? I assumed before the map dropped that it is, like Caucasus, meant to last years and demonstrate their latest capabilities and what the newest and near future graphics tech can do. So in that case a significant proportion of us are going to struggle to run it. It's not a bad thing, it's inevitable that you and I will eventually need to upgrade our PCs.
@mi24sturm good for you. I've spent thounsands of dollars on my hardware over the last years to run DCS. I upgraded my system regularly to keep up with the developement but if you can't play DCS in VR with a 3090 and 64GB RAM smoothly then the bottleneck is definitely not on my end but on ED's coding. It's crap. period.
