There's a lot of misinformation, and fear mongering, out there about the Panama Canal. All of the cruising guides we read said something along the lines of: _you should definitely hire an agent, it's too difficult to attempt on your own_. Many of the cruisers we spoke to said the same and several of the other UA-cam videos we watched all used agents.
So when we asked our friends Rufus and Kate who transited the canal 2016 without an agent, their response: It's CRAZY easy and you can totally do the canal without an agent. We weren't totally convinced it was going to be a breeze so we decided to document the process and share it.
So join us as we Sail to Colon to begin the process of transiting the Panama Canal without an Agent.
We share way more info on our website. Including links to the forms and documents you'll need to begin the process along with a few other tips we learned along the way: gonewiththewyn...

We hired an agent and I don’t regret it. Erik took care of everything and we did not have to leave extra money for contingencies. We made the transit in one night. Our schedule started at 1600 hours at the flats. By midnight we were looking at the Pacific. We found all our line handlers at the Shelter Bay marina. Extra line and wrapped tire fenders were provided by the agent.
Since our boat had been through twice before, the admeasurer had really nothing to do except have us sign the paperwork. Hope your trip went well.

Another fabulous video for the "save file." All the needed stuff to do this on our own by following the leaders and connecting the dots. Thanks guys. BTW, met Kent at the Miami Boat Show over the weekend (Feb 15-16. 2018). One step further to getting on board our cat.😊👍👌👊✨🥂⛵️⚓️✨

It’s really nice to know everything that goes into the crossing. I never realized all that it takes to get through there. It seems like every time you turn around someone has their hand out wanting money. Always thought you just got in line and waited your turn Ha Ha . Good luck and looking forward to the next video. 👍

Great "Game Face" Ha Ha Ha I love it. You are a lucky couple when you can have family fly right in at a weeks notice at their own expense to help you do a job on the boat ! You have an amazing family. I will follow you's anywhere you's go to, so keep going. Waiting for your next episode. Fair winds.

I've been following your UA-cam channel for some time and why the two of you seem to do so much so effortlessly is because of your ability to tag team projects and because of your resourcefulness. You don't like spending money any more than my wife and I do. (I bet you do your own taxes too). ;-) Because you are willing to put out a little effort where others don't is why you ended up with $300 - $600 in your pocket at the end of the day. That money is better spent exploring some island in the south Pacific somewhere... Safe Sailing and keep up the great work!

Thanks to the 'guys' for the link to Jason & Nikki's video! With absolutely no disrespect, I'm a 'land-lubber' so the RV Geeks are at the top of the list for my video watching the last while, where in the past Jason & Nikki where with their motorhome video's (which I still watch btw!). I find, the places I want to see in the world are more local than some others, so North America...here I come! Can only hope one day down the road Jason & Nikki jump back to land travel, but at any cost...I'll watch them occasionally to see how they are making out...and follow other RVers videos! I did quite enjoy Jason's 'Lithium' video, and SO much changes technology wise these days, I can only imagine that realm will hopefully become less costly, and give the average motorhome/RV/marine more options for their power needs! Thanks for the video, and safe travels!

New boat designs are not as good as the older ones, which is good for us, we will want a 10 yr old cat anyway. We actually want your boat, should you change your mind! Ha ha!! Happy sailing!

You know, you can go to any Marina around the canal, at the Colon end there is one by the old JOTC base, jungle operations training center, the old jungle warfare school for the U.S., you can still see the old barracks and movie theatre from the marina, and post a request for line handlers, and tourists will do it for free, just supply the meals, and they get a first hand look at the canal, I did it myself, had a blast! I didn't realize where the marina was, till I saw the old barracks, went through that school when I was 18, in the 82nd Airborne, in 1977. Colon can be a very rough place. Love your videos! Went to visit a friend in Panama for a week in 2011, stayed for 3 months! Portobelo was very interesting. Have a great day!

Captain you need to station Jason in the crows nest for best tanker navigation.

You can usually hail on the VHF radio and get other cruisers to line handle for ya for free.(I give em 50 bucks each on deliveries)

This is much better and clearer information that I've seen before from only one other video that I saw. The other video was Zingaro. They said that they did it the absolutely cheapest way possible but it seems as though you've done that as well but it sounds much easier the way you explained it than them and that's due to calling the boat measuring people that I assume was free. Nice job! Was there anything that you could have done to make it even less expensive? I did hear that you had to have certain dimeter lines and I think that was one inch. Is that true?
