  • Using fire for the important tool it is to improve wildlife habitat! Join Grant and the crew on the fire line from first light to mop up!
    Watch to see the choices that are made as the circumstances change throughout the day.
    We cut and felled the cedars, allowed them to dry for two to three years, then burned them where they fell. A fabulous composition of native warm season grasses and forbs will recolonize the area.
    If you take degraded habitat - unless it’s been intensely plowed and that seed bank really messed with - if you use prescribed fire or whatever the appropriate technique is for that habitat, usually the natives will recolonize that area.
    The value of these areas after fire is to many species of wildlife, and the views created, and the value to hunters, is much, much greater than the value it had when they were covered with eastern red cedars.

    Years ago, somebody was dragging a load of scrap metal down the road on a low trailer. A piece of metal was hanging off the back of the trailer dragging on the asphalt throwing out sparks. Conditions were dry and the sparks caused a series of fires along the roadway. One of the fields was about a 20 acres covered mostly with what we call broomsage. Most of the field burned before fire crews were able to contain it. In a few months, it was the greenest field around.

    I have a 4 acre plot that is severely overgrown in briars. I used this area to teach my kids how to conduct a controlled burn after watching your videos. I didn’t figure the fire would burn all the briars down but wanted to clean out the under story so once I get my road repaired to access the land I will be able to see well enough to avoid stumps with my brush hog.
    My kids were extremely nervous about the whole ordeal but once they saw how slow a backing fire worked they calmed a bit. That is until I blacked enough area to start a head fire! Then they thought we were going to burn the world down. Great teachings and everything went just as you taught. Thank you for putting these videos together and sharing this information. My kids are looking forward to the next burn. God Bless you all.

    Great video. If you could add the black area on your graph to show the progress, it would be great. Also, time lapse on a spot.

    Great information! I'm trying to get a small burn done, but reason and humidity have not helped me. We'll get it done, maybe just a touch later than I planned.
    Looking forward to the teams turkey hunts!

    Love your videos and especially the technical stuff y’all talk through in easy-to-understand language. Thanks to your encouragement, we now burn about 1/3 of our property annually here in Georgia and are really enjoying the increased habitat quality and reduction in wildfire threat.
    Blessings to you and the crew!

    Wouldn't a clump or 2 of remaining cedars provide SOME value to wildlife (maybe in the form of a tree stand location)? Also, it looked like a thorough burn from a percentage point of view. Did you leave 'mosaics' of unburned 'leaf litter' to perhaps shelter some beneficial organisms (worms, fungi...) to later recolonize the burn contributing to soil health? Maybe them worms were down deep with dry conditions...

    • @GrowingDeerTV
      @GrowingDeerTV  2 роки тому

      David - it's always best to replicate nature - what the early settlers reported. Leaving cedars means leaving a seed source of an invasive species. Worms survive fire fine - they simply move under the soil's surface and since heat rises they are fine! Prescribed fire is a very common practice in many areas and has been researched for years by many conservation groups. Even the NWTF is as strong proponent of using prescribed fire!

    Hi !!!
    Always enjoy your videos.
    What do you suggest if I can’t do prescribed fires in my area
    Thank you

      M A - Thanks! Glyphosate or other herbicides can be used, but this cost more and isn't near as natural. Fire is a very good tool where it can be used.

    How would you deal with the prescribed burn on a wooded property that has an invasive grass such as cogon grass in some of the Meadows on the property, about 20 acres total?

    • @GrowingDeerTV
      @GrowingDeerTV  2 роки тому +1

      Cogon grass - yuck! Fire wont' control Cogon grass - you need to treat it with a herbicide - soon - as it will continue to spread!

    You don’t like the “fwoomp” sound and seeing the leaves jump when you touch off the start of your fire? :)

    • @GrowingDeerTV

      What makes you think I don't like starting the fire?

    • @saltybr

      I wasn’t saying that. With your description of fuel mixing and letting the gas volatize before lighting , I know you’ve probably heard the sound of a hot mix going off at the beginning of a burn a few times. You’re speaking with a voice of experience.

    • @GrowingDeerTV

      Kelly - I doubt any hens have started laying here. The research is extremely clear that the benefits of fire far outweigh any risk to wildlife when planned and conducted accordingly. Let's be pro habitat improvement! One last thought, fire often terminates a few snakes and snake are common nest predators!
