Jacqueline Higgins I’ve watched this 3 times already. I was already aware of your family lineage from documentaries I’ve seen on the FDNY, but hearing your fathers stories, they are hilarious, emotional and motivational in equal measure. Here’s to your dad, and your family from across the pond.

An absolute legend and a class act. I had the privilege of having Joe Higgins as my DI in the February 2001 class. I’ll never forget the first day of probie school. Full Metal Jacket in effect. I wish I had it on video. Love ya bro. Keep kickin ass!

My DI in 1997. I wish ..God I wish ..I had held onto all his teachings. I remember him saying one day “ If I won the lottery.. a million dollars ..I wouldn’t leave this job”. Never forget him. Like yesterday. He gave respect to all the ex cops, like me, and never spoke down to us. He spoke to us. He never spoke down to anyone. He raised my game big time. I still, still to this day, think about the academy and Joe Higgins. Joe you really had an effect on me not only as a firefighter but as a young man. I still carry those values.
    Job well done.

I took a while debating whether I should write this or not, but I just had to tell you Sir. FF Higgins, you were our D.I. and a true role model for exactly the type of firefighter I wanted to be - and that I know Mike Roberts also wanted to be and WAS. It was an HONOR being in the FDNY and having YOU as our DI.
About Roberts, I know his loss hit you hard. Mike and I had an argument or two, and for those who didn't know us well, it may have seemed we had animosity towards each other. This was not only not true, but as I later found out (when it was too late) that not only did we both have the deepest admiration and respect for you sir, but for each other as well. I saw a devotion and dedication to the idea of what a real hero should be in Mike; he wanted to make his parents proud and uphold the traditions of the heroic father he had. He was a skinny young man, died at only 26 and was a PURE all American hero. To be honest, when I heard he was gone, I couldn't stop crying in private - but I also knew that ironically by his death, he had achieved in his short life EXACTLY what he had set out to do; to be a FDNY Firefighter and HERO.
You inspired us sir. I know you (and perhaps some others) may have thought you were being too tough at the rock, but truthfully, my only wish was that you had been even tougher and harder on us - and I know Mike felt exactly the same way! Mike actually told me that once. He said to me: " come on admit it man, you want him to be like the D.I. in "Officer and a Gentleman" don't you? 'I got nowhere else to go' while doing pushups!". I didn't answer him, but he was right 100%. I KNEW it was tough love you were giving us all and we were ready to run 1000 miles and jump into the fire of the tallest building for you sir.
After Mike died his mother shared something he had said about me which I had not known, and only then did I realize he had the same feelings about me that I did about him. Because I am doing this anonymously I can go around our unspoken FDNY macho code we all have - the code that we can never say anything too nice about each other (at least to each others face!) and only break b-lls. I remember the old joke, how do FDNY FF's say I love you? F--- ou. Well I have to say to you D.I. Higgins, Mike LOVED you, and so do I.
Please do NOT hold yourself responsible or EVER feel ANY guilt about getting him into 214 or that you somehow are responsible that he was in a position to make that ultimate sacrifice. Don't you DARE let those P.T.S.D. demons call your name. We all will always have the trauma of that day in our souls, I never spoke to anyone about it (except here anonymously) but BELIEVE me, Mike died EXACTLY in the kind of way he would have wanted - as a pure HERO. He was absolutely 'truly dedicated, genuinely motivated" BEFORE he met you. All we can do for him now is pray for his soul and be there for his family. Although his body died far too soon, his heroism and his soul live forever. Incredibly I had a nickname for him I shared with my wife and no one else, and at his funeral I heard a member of his family use that SAME nickname! He was someone very tough, very special and a young man who I will never forget or ever stop praying for.
I love you Joe, you represent everything that is good about the FDNY, the USA and I will never forget what I learned from you. Now go enjoy your golden years in retirement, smile, and 'DON'T MOPE!!' ; D
Mike, rest in heaven my brother - I wish I had gotten to tell you how much I loved you, but maybe someday I will on the other side.
    -Anonymous.

In the 90’s, the rap group Boogie Down Productions came out w/a joint & the 1st line went, “When & where are all the real men?” I think I found one & his name is Joe Higgins. Semper Fi, Marine.
