What a wonderful demonstration of craftsmanship, patience, and artistic expression for a basic functioning tool!! Remarkable! Despite my fascination with the work and the process, I found myself coming back to thinking about having to sharpen all those chisels!
A perfect mix of modern tools to speed up the process without sacrificing the artistry. There are 8 billion people on this planet and at least half of us need one of those.
That is the most beautiful chalk line tool I have ever seen. And, based on what I learned of the technology it uses, it is better than the normal chalk line tool normally used here in the States. Permanent ink saturated cotton line run through wetted fibrous wadding. And totally a sign of the craftsman carpenter's pride in his work.
His work is so moving. I want one. EDIT: I read from the comments he's no longer with us. Thank you to him for putting beauty into the world. And thanks to the filmmaker for immortalizing his beautiful work.
I am so sad to hear this. This film of Mr Tamaki was great gift to humanity, and I so appreciate that the film-maker did such a beautiful job, respectfully portraying a humble master at work!
The skill of this carver is incredible. I believe it is also important to recognize the skill of the videographer who recorded this (very clearly!), and to thank whoever created this program to record and share the skills of such artists and craftsmen. Thank you all

Don't get me wrong the craftsmanship is incredible but with things like chalkline and laser guides it makes sense why these type of things are highly sought after anymore.

No, you should absolutely use it, to honor his work and the spirit of craftsmanship it represents. Just use it carefully, and only on projects you really believe in (pieces and projects that you want to really put your heart and soul into.)
I still remember carving my Sumitsubo 10 years ago :) It was so much fun but also very demanding work… Mine is nowhere near as detailed but I’m still very happy with it :)
There is a surplus of material needed in order to carve from. There’s probably cheap plastic versions of these but some people buy tools not to use but to collect.

The Japanese hate to break tradition, so even the modern versions of these are probably much bigger than our chalk lines. I used to be a carpenter and had a chalk line (Stanley ?) that was shaped like a plumb bob and could even be used as one in a pinch. The elaborate carving and decoration here ($$$) is likely to only be appreciated by collectors or enthusiasts. Someone up above said that this fellow has unfortunately passed on. Many trades like this in Japan are dying out because these guys die and the young people aren’t willing to toil away for years in order to barely scrape by. An apprentice to a man like this would traditionally spend his first couple of years unpaid making tea and learning how to sharpen the tools before being trusted to do anything else. Not a lot of young Japanese are willing to do that now.
As much work and craftsmanship that was and as beautifully it turned out I just feel sad because that’s a tool that’s made to be used on a construction site where delicate tools do not last and if it even does it will likely be damaged …. It’s like going to work on a concrete site when the concrete is being laid wearing a $10k watch that is super delicate … you know it doesn’t belong there and the risk of damaging it is way too great… but it’s beautiful work no question

私も35年くらい前に、会社の先輩に職人さんの道具はまたぐなと、教えてもらいました、日本人にとって大事な事ですよね
69歳大工です。過去には少し職人を雇っていましたが今は一人親方でリフォーム主体で営んでいます。この墨坪使わなくても手に入れたかったんだけど縁がなかった！
ついつい機能重視でパーフェクト墨坪使用してます。今からでも手に入れて床の間に飾っておこうかな、すばらしいですね！😊

壺の字が間違ってるけど、凄い技術ですね。
まさに匠の技だと思います。
独立した時親方に買ってもらった墨壺は神棚に祀ってあります。
製造工程は初めて見ました。
凄すぎます。
墨ツボは以前はこうでした。これにバネを組み込んで、手を放せば自動に糸を巻き取るものが出ました。
そして今では形を変えパーフェクト墨ツボなるものがあり、プラスチック製ですが性能は結構いよいです。
でも、私は、この手彫り墨ツボのほうが仕事への気持ちが乗り、今でも使っています。
壺静さんの墨壺とても使いやすいです。何度も墨付けに使わせていただきました。ありがとうございます。
使い込まれて黒光りする墨壺を見ると
忘れられていく道具、だけど確かに使われ続けてきたっていうなんとも趣きが感じられる
有為転変は世の習いだけどさよならと言いたくない道具ですね
安価な物でもなんとかなるけど良いものはやっぱり使い心地と完成度が違うしこの技術,技に敬意を評して買うし使うんだなと思う
祖父が若い時大工してたけど家にあったのは瓦みたいな硯みたいな素材の墨壺でした。
手仕事は美しいですね。
東大寺山門修理の時、梁の上の墨壺が残されていました。鎌倉時代でしょうか、当時の棟梁が意図的に残したのだと言われています。数百年を超えて。ロマンがありますよね。

プラスチックはいろいろと問題になっています。一つが1000円ぐらいで買える木製の墨壺売れると思います。私の父親が大工だった頃昭和30年頃は大工さんは自分で墨壺を作っていた！

プラの墨壺は使い込んでも変化は有りません。使わないと割と速く乾いてしまいます。、木の墨壺は保湿するのか墨の持ちが良いです。使い込めば墨の持ちが更に良くなります。蓋が無いので墨刺しも使い易いです。(墨汁は反射が少ないのか線が見やすいです)
他のコメントに鶴や亀の装飾は必要ないと有りましたが、誰の物かわかりやすくするためのものかと思います。差金にも干支がプリントしてあったりしますので。プラでも木でも、ジップロックに入れておくと乾かなくて良いですよ。
めっきり使用頻度の減ったリフォーム大工でしたm(_ _)m

「墨壺」は昔、鉄板を溶断する際に「白い墨汁」を入れてけがくのに使ってたなあ。
最初は「けがき針」でやってたけど、時間がかかるから「墨壺」でピシッとやった。

墨壺を知ったきっかけが、霊幻道士で・・（学生時代は何回も観てた映画）。
近頃は、ホラー耐性がなくなってきてる分、観れなくなりつつある・・。
今は亡き、おじいちゃんと父親も建築家だったが、
道具を使った姿は見たことがなくて、鉛筆派だったのかなと思ってしまう・・。

먹줄을 튀길때 정확하게 직각을 이루지 않으면 오차가 발생할 수도 있겠네요. 먹줄을 누가 튀기느냐에 따라 먹줄의 위치도 약간씩 바뀔수 있으니 오래된 숙련된 목수가 먹줄을 튀기는 것이 바람직할듯 싶습니다.
