I have 41 trees and bushes and 23 different types of hydrangeas. I planted in last few years and I really like your videos the way you care for them. I also dry my hydrangeas for the winter. My biggest hydrangea flower 17 inches.
I have large heavy pots that I bring into my garage every year. My pots are smaller on the bottom and most have an edge at the top. I take a rope and a hand truck (dollie) to move them even though the base of the pot is larger. I walk up to the pot and tie the rope to the left side of the dollie and go around the pot and tie the loose end to the other side of the dollie pulling tight. The pot is now connected and can be moved into the garage! If the pot is very wide you can place a piece of plywood on the bottom of the dollie and rock the pot on to the dollie. The weight of the potted plant holds the plywood in place long enough to get it in the garage. Some of my pots are 20 inches tall x 20 inches wide while the base/bottom of the hand cart is only 9 inches wide. It works great without any help!
Most hydreangeas are down to zone 4 so container planting are perfect if your zone 6 and up. The rule of thumb is to make sure your 2 zones up whenever considering to leave them out in pots during the winter. I'm in zone 7b so this isn't a problem for me. I have the limelight & mophead hydrengeas in containers throughout the seasons.
I found a beautiful big leaf hydrangea plant at my local sams club, April,2024. I'm going to grow this one in a container on my covered back deck. I'm going to over winter mine like you did in the garage. I'll let you know how it did next spring. Thank you for such great recommendations. I subscriber and I'm going to follow your channel. Thank you for sharing this knowledge on container hydrangeas! I was planning on putting most of my macrophylla hydrangeas in containers here in KS zone 6. This is my first time growing hydrangeas. Our winters are very similar, Chicago probably has a tad bit worse winters than us only because we sometimes have mild winters. Just never know which year that will be. This helped me to decide not planting some of the bigger ones in the ground. I was afraid no blooms would come since we have up and down crazy weather especially in the spring. Keep doing these videos your great in front of the camera clear, precise speaking, great at explaining things and very beautiful. Think your channel is going to do well. ❤️😊❤️
Thank you so much! Your kind words mean a lot to me. Hydrangeas has always been one of my favorites and I thought I wouldn’t get to enjoy them since I don’t have a yard, so I’ve been so happy they’ve done well in containers!
@@ChicagoGardener Ah you’re welcome! Hydrangeas are definitely my favorite too! @@kushclarkkent6669 not super versed on hydrangeas, but they’re beautiful plants when in bloom. Most of my knowledge comes from the industry mentioned in your username lol. Got one in a container Bethany and it is doing great so far. LIverpool UK weather to contend with so lots of rain and wind 😂 but it's dling well. Thanks for the advice video.
Great video! For my indoor plants, I use a plant tarp for potting and it makes minimal mess. It might work for your deck but you'll probably need a much larger tarp for the container sizes.
Yes I use a big blue paint tarp to first mix soil and fertilizer when I'm doing plants with same soil and fertilizer needs. Then fill container with soil in middle of tarp.
I've grown cuttings for Hydrangea, Hebe, Buddleia, Spirea & Lavender. It is very rewarding when they survive and flourish for many years. Most of these are now on my channel header and I made a new Hebe video which shows these cuttings on their journey into big shrubs.
Great information on posting hydrangeas. I bought a few small ones this year and potted them because the soil in my garden is so hard I can't dig a hole for them. The flowers seem to be turning brown. I am experimenting with changing their location si they don't get too much or too little sun. Leaves seem to be bright green so I know they are not dead. Thanks again.

Thanks for sharing this video. I have one in a container. My flowers are dead, should I dead head them in order for them to bloom again? I am totally new to them.
Great video! I have 3 on a big pot for the past 3 years, I water them 2 or 3 times a week due to hot 🔥 weather here, about 91degrees, I have too in a shaded wall whit maybe 4-5 hours of sun but I barely get 2 or 3 blooms, should I give them more sun? Also you mentioned, fertilize twice a year, if I haven't fertilize them in the past year would it be OK if I fertilize them now?
Is your garage fairly warm to be able to overwinter the plants and hence survive? Do you know how warm it stays in there as opposed to outside? I'm asking this because our garage on a single family home gets very cold, the ceiling is not insulated. My daughters live two miles from me in a townhouse and their garage is insulated by their own floor above the garage and both sides, also. Even when it gets below zero outside it can stay above freezing in their garage and it also faces south and gets warmer from the sun as opposed to mine where it is only a few degrees above the outdoor temperature with only one of the sides of my garage against a wall that is attached to the heated house. Just wanted to point that out to some to check to see how cold their garages get before assuming they can overwinter in their particular garage. Beautiful hydrangeas!
I have been gifted a potted Hydrangea with blooms. in June. I live in Kansas zone 6. So far the plant is doing great indoors. It gets the morning sun from a kitchen window. Could you give me tips on what to do with it after it bloomed, and before I put it in the garage for the winter? Will it always be potted or can I plant it outside now before winter? Thank you very much for a response. I enjoyed your video and it is very informative.
Hi! Thank you for a nice video! I got a potted hydrangea in late spring which has been growing well on my balcony. However, the fall is now here, I live in the hardiness zone 5 and in an apartment building with no unheated garage or basement. The only possible places to keep my plants at home are either the balcony, a storage space in the balcony (without any insulation so not much warmer probably) or inside of the apartment (which is quite warm). Would it be possible to overwinter it in any of these places?
Would it be possible to put it in the balcony storage space and then pack burlap or some other insulating material around the pot? I think that’s what I would try.
super helpful, thank you for sharing! i'm so excited to try growing hydrangeas in containers myself this year, they're just so pretty! i'm in a similar climate to you (Ontario, Canada. zone 6b) - in your experience, when would it be safe for me to buy/plant in a container? i'm soo over winter and eager to get started on my yard and gardens! 🙊
I try to wait until early May here but that doesn’t always happen 😂 If you buy it and plant it now you could move it inside if temps drop too low (assuming the container isn’t too heavy to move). I did that with a few plants I potted up too early last year.
@@ChicagoGardener thanks for that amazing information. My question is how long can the plant last in a pot 1 yr 2 yr ?? How do you know it’s time to move up to a bigger pot. I am in zone 6a Ontario and we have pretty brutal winter here and I’ve seen the hydrangeas that bloom on old wood is not blooming this season
Hi Bethany - I have a covered screened in porch that gets the perfect amount of sun in the morning for hydrangeas, however, I wasn't sure if I grow them in containers on a covered porch, if they would need bee pollination in order to bloom. Any advice? Thanks so much 🙂
What fertilizer do you use for hydrangeas in containers? My blue color blooms are now changing to green . Bought from store, repotted in large container with good potting soil. Was blooming perfectly for a month.
I use anything “bloom boosting” for fertilizer but the bloom color is dependent upon soil acidity, so you might want to try adding soil acidified to the pot.
Yay!! Pruning will differ depending on the variety. The safest bet, if you don’t throw away labels like I do 🤣, is to Google the exact variety and pruning.
Hello! I love your videos! But I need your help! I potted my hydrangea & I overwatered it. I also thought I had to water hydrangeas over head since they want so much water but apparently I wasn’t supposed to do that. My pot soil started growing white mushrooms. On the web it said if hydrangeas do this that there’s no treatment & mushroom root rot will kill the hydrangea. So I started pulling it out. When I noticed, the white mushrooms were growing from the outside potting soil I added to fill the pot & not growing from the hydrangea soil. Do I keep the hydrangea and change the pot soil or ?
The only way I’ve managed to save a plant from root rot was to replant it into dry soil! So I took the whole plant out, knocked off as much soil as possible, and replanted I’m fresh dry soil.
This is how I don't make a huge mess: get a large tote (I have a few 27 gal. HDX totes from Home Depot), empty the 50 qt. bag of Miracle Gro potting soil into it. I add perlite and worm castings to the tote (add whatever amendments you prefer). Then, I get my plant pot, my plants and a little stool to sit on (I'm old) and while holding the pot so it's sitting on the rim of the tote, I reach into the tote with a 3 qt. feed scoop (Tractor Supply) and fill the pot. The soil falls back into the tote if I don't get it into the pot for some reason. Sit the pot right on top of the soil in the tote to put the plant in the pot. It's large enough . Brush off any excess soil back into the tote. It's a handy method for window box containers too. I always have a tote or two full and ready to go. Buy the soil and other stuff when it's on sale. Best wishes.
Hello! My dear friend gifted me my first hydrangea! I live in a townhouse in KY (zone 6-7). I unfortunately dont have a garage....any suggestions for winter? I do have a outdoor storage closet 🤷🏼♀️ Thank you!
New Subscriber here!! Just bought our FIRST HOUSE and am beginning my journey of gardening! I bought these huge black planter. Its 21 inches tall and 11 in wide across each way. With that much DEPTH how do I fill it up 🥺 Do I just need bags and bags of soil? Thank in advance!
If what you plant it in will use all the space, yes lots of soil!! I also like to mix in compost as well from local garden centers. If you don’t need all the space, I have seen people fill the bottom of large containers with bark or mulch then put soil on top.
Thanks so much for this info . It’s my favourite colour . My leaves or hydra gena are falling in spite green ... what can be the reason ? Please guide .
If you have an unheated garage or shed, id recommend putting it there for the winter. If not, move it up against the wall of a building for more winter protection.
Yes, beginner here… The purple cow activated organic compost is not available for purchase in Connecticut or for delivery. Is there any other suggested compost?

I have 3 on a big pot for the past 3 years, I water them 2 or 3 times a week due to hot 🔥 weather here, about 91degrees, I have too in a shaded wall whit maybe 4-5 hours of sun but I barely get 2 or 3 blooms, should I give them more sun? Also you mentioned, fertilize twice a year, if I haven't fertilize them in the past year would it be OK if I fertilize them now?
Yes! I would fertilize now.
@@ChicagoGardener I will try it out! Thanks!
super helpful, thank you for sharing! i'm so excited to try growing hydrangeas in containers myself this year, they're just so pretty!
i'm in a similar climate to you (Ontario, Canada. zone 6b) - in your experience, when would it be safe for me to buy/plant in a container? i'm soo over winter and eager to get started on my yard and gardens! 🙊
I try to wait until early May here but that doesn’t always happen 😂 If you buy it and plant it now you could move it inside if temps drop too low (assuming the container isn’t too heavy to move). I did that with a few plants I potted up too early last year.
@@ChicagoGardener okay, thank you ☺️May's not too far away now! but i'm still not sure how much longer i can resisit! 😂
It looks beautiful. Could you pls share the name of this hydrangea?
Thx so much for the advice & great video Bethany 👍😘🌼 how do you think they’d do in Colorado ? ?
I don’t know much about the weather there but what’s your growing zone?
I believe it’s 5b
This hydrangea and container both are beautiful ...😍😍can you specify where you got this container
Thank you! I got the container on Amazon. It’s called the Countryside Tub Planter.
@@ChicagoGardener thanks 😊
I live in chicago what if I cover it with another same size pot ? Will that protect it from the winter ?
Hi Bethany - I have a covered screened in porch that gets the perfect amount of sun in the morning for hydrangeas, however, I wasn't sure if I grow them in containers on a covered porch, if they would need bee pollination in order to bloom. Any advice? Thanks so much 🙂
I’ve never done it myself but my aunt has some in her sun room!
Here in chicago they live ok everybody keep it uncover. With tons of snow. Temp below, zero. And they survive..
@@ChicagoGardener can you mention the name of the brand for any “bloom boosting” fertilizer?
I like this buatiful flewers they are strong and so beautiful to be honest I have that as well injoy but thanks anyway ❤
Did you use the base for the pot?
Are hydrangeas able to rebloom while in containers?
I’m in the Chicago area as well! So can I leave them in a container in my Solarium during those Cold Winters?
What temperature is it in the solarium during winter?
@@ChicagoGardener Now it’s around 60-70 , but winter it can get down to 20-30
18-20 inch pot seems very large. Is that really necessary or only if you plan to grow them very big?
Should I be pruning? I am learning how to grow in pots, so far they are all alive, yay
Yay!! Pruning will differ depending on the variety. The safest bet, if you don’t throw away labels like I do 🤣, is to Google the exact variety and pruning.
Thank you ❤️❤️

Hey what time of year do u repot?
In the spring or fall! I try to avoid the hottest parts of the year.
@@ChicagoGardener thank you!! And when I do does it have to be dormant? Thank you for responding
@@ChicagoGardener thank you so much for your advice! I will be trying this !
Is your garage attached or detached? Those few degrees from your home's radiant heat will make a huge difference.
When exactly do you bring the hydrangea in your garage? When its leaves die or as soon as the weather gets to certain degree Celsius? Thank you!
Usually when the leaves have fallen off!
@@ChicagoGardenerThank you very much ❤️
This is how I don't make a huge mess: get a large tote (I have a few 27 gal.
This is such a good method, thank you!! I just recently got a tote to store soil in over the winter so I’m definitely trying this out!
@@ChicagoGardener Atta girl! Keep going 👍
What type of fertilizer do you use? Also how do you prone the flowers when they start to wilt?
Hello! My dear friend gifted me my first hydrangea! I live in a townhouse in KY (zone 6-7). I unfortunately dont have a garage....any suggestions for winter? I do have a outdoor storage closet 🤷🏼♀️
Thank you!
I would put it in the storage closet and put some burlap, blankets, or other material around it for insulation.
How many days to you keep watering after repotting?need help
New Subscriber here!! Just bought our FIRST HOUSE and am beginning my journey of gardening! I bought these huge black planter. Its 21 inches tall and 11 in wide across each way. With that much DEPTH how do I fill it up 🥺 Do I just need bags and bags of soil? Thank in advance!
If what you plant it in will use all the space, yes lots of soil!! I also like to mix in compost as well from local garden centers. If you don’t need all the space, I have seen people fill the bottom of large containers with bark or mulch then put soil on top.
Hello dear. I have this plant in my garden in London uk . Please let me know when can i put Fertilisers?
Kind regard

Thanks so much for this info . It’s my favourite colour . My leaves or hydra gena are falling in spite green ... what can be the reason ? Please guide .
Is your hydrangea in the ground or a container? I would check for water issues first, either too much or too little.
@@ChicagoGardener it’s in container ... I guess the container may be the issue too. Thanks so much for ur prompt reply . I will look into it . 💖💖❤️💕💕
Blessings! I live in New Jersey how I protect my hydrangeas in winter?
If you have an unheated garage or shed, id recommend putting it there for the winter. If not, move it up against the wall of a building for more winter protection.
Can you show me what kind of fertilizer that you used for hydrangeas and how propotion of soil to fertilizer ? Thank you somuch.
Yes, beginner here… The purple cow activated organic compost is not available for purchase in Connecticut or for delivery. Is there any other suggested compost?
I’ve had good luck with all types of compost! The mushroom compost from Home Depot has worked well for me if that’s available near you.
@@ChicagoGardener Awesome! Thank you so much for your tip.
I just got 4 Wee Bit Grumpy :)
Can you link everything you used?
Do we need to propagate hydrangeas if yes how we can do this?
can you divide the roots of a hydrangea mine is huge and to me should be outside. live in scotand
How long can the average hydrangea stay in the container? I mean do the out grow it and die after a year or two?
From my experience, 2 to 3 years before I need to pot it into a larger container!
Hi, plz. Update about begonia & Hydrangea plant.
