Ep043 Things That Go Bump in Long Island Sound...

  • In this episode we sail all the way through Long Island Sound from New York to Newport, RI. Along the way we have a close call with a channel marker, share the waters with submarines and accidentally sail through a torpedo range! Never a dull moment and some fantastic sailing with it.

This video has been filmed in 4K but might be viewing as grainy due to the long buffering times of UA-cam post upload! It's the first time we have used this higher resolution and didn't realise this is a common problem with 4K footage :( it should look nice and crisp when UA-cam finally sorts it out! Nicki and Ben.

Sincerely, do not bother with the 4k. Personally I watch your videos in 1920x1080 and the pictures are just superb. 1280x720 30fps is the good compromise minimum between beautiful images and the duration of upload (in my opinion) - Moreover YT transforms the native 4k for its platform, the video will be truncated). Bons vents, belles mers ;-)

By the way, we both absolutely love your boat. Not only well built but maintained to a very high standard. We are (six month a year) cruisers on a 1970's, 34 ft boat and appreciate just how much work is involved in keeping an old boat to that level. Well done guys!

Glad you liked the oysters. If you did ever sail the PNW / BC coast, the oysters are huge and everywhere. Two summers ago we cruised Desolation Sound and had oysters for breakfast, lunch and dinner LOL. Miss them so much now that we are in warmer waters. Enjoy them while you can and safe cruising. You are a great and talented couple.

Understand the radio problems in New York. Caused by something on vhf called intermodulation or “intermod”. All the vhf signals in NYC bump off each other making harmonics that kill some marine VHF both transmit and receive, mostly receive. Think of your radio in a thick soup of interference where the total power swamps your radio’s circuits. As you leave it starts working again.

First time viewer, and I must say I just love you channel and especially your boat! Looking at the video from the cockpit I would have thought her to be a 60 footer she looks much bigger than she is. Love the aft cabin with the windows wish I would have discovered her when I was younger and still sailing. Due to health issues, I've converted to a trawler now a days which still allows me to take off by myself. I think your's is the perfect boat for two people so much storage. Well I'm going to start binge watching all your videos from the start now just wanted to say how much I love your boat and your channel!

Haven't worked on a horn like that in years but as I recall there are contact points inside and if the points get corrosion on them then you get low volume farty noises. Some contact cleaner and a pass or two of emery cloth should clear it right up. I used to reseal the cover with silicon to keep moisture out. Welcome to the USA. Doc

When I was young, my grand parents took me on a boat tour around NYC. As we passed under one of the many bridges (don't remember which one) kids? threw rocks at our boat from the top of a bridge. Everyone but me ran for cover inside the boat as rocks hit the water all around the boat... I remember thinking "is it raining?". I didn't realize what was happening until I was struck in the shoulder with a rock. I realize you're likely not in new York anymore but wanted to warn you with this story anyway... please keep it in mind, stay aware and safe.

To get the pulley Bolt 🔩 undone you can hold a breaker bar + socket onto the nut/bolt and use the engine starter to crank the engine over with the breaker bar (or very long spanner) propped up against something solid.
Check which way the starter spins the bolt so you know where to prop the wrench/breaker bar.
