This version of the theme is amazing. Dionne Warwick is one of the greatest singers known to humanity.
Unless you're Wendy Williams.
Dionne warwick is a so awesome with so many hits do you know the way san hosay.
I wish it was released physically...it sounds absolutely amazing... Gorgeous
@@stephenlundy1828San Jose, but point made.
Absolutely horrid opening. Why change a classic?!
In later episodes you can see the ship changed and to me lost its own personality,i wish someone would've bought the original ship and refurbished it as a romantic couples cruise line were newlyweds could experience love on the seas
Welll....there's The Real Love Boat on tonight....(rolls eyes)
Teri Hatcher was one of the 'Love Boat mermaids' (seated first row on the right)!
I love this version of the theme, obviously the original from Jack is better but Dionne does a great job on it and I just love seeing the young legend in the making herself Teri Hatcher with the Mermaids at the end.
Which one was her?
@@colleen4ever She was the one on the bottom row all the way to the right with the curly hair.
@@PredatorKingdomYeah, all The Mermaids were cuties, but this was 1985, so Teri Hatcher was 20 going on 21 at the time, so she stood out due to her later 1990s Lois Lane and 2000s "Desperate Housewives" notoriety. The Mermaids and the Dionne Warwick version of the series theme helped make more contemporary the series and update it for the mid-1980s.
Betty White got to do one of those primetime soap diva turns, like Susan Sullivan.
After all the years of seeing the opening with her in it, I could not put it into words on how I looooved her opening and you just said it in two seconds.
In fact, Betty invented that quick, over-the-shoulder turn toward the camera during her earliest days on television. It went on to become a famous reveal technique in both film and on TV. I imagine here, in this clip, she's paying homage to the cheesy night-time soap stars using her move without likely knowing it belonged to Betty.
Constance McCashin had a great 'turn' in the Season 9 opener for Knots Landing (the retooled version with the lush slowed down arrangement and the paint splotch artwork background)
Ken George Jones Right I noticed that too
Ken George Jones Yes! My exact thought. Falcon Creat
A couple of interest observations here:
1. I did not know until only a few days ago Dionne Warwick sang the theme to this series in the last season.
2. I did not know Teri Hatcher was featured in the intro with her mermaid co-stars in this series.
3. This intro features stars from three of my other favourite series (Golden Girls, Mary Tyler Moore, and Desperate Housewives) and one of my favourite singers.
Quite an interesting intro here.
For me the Jack Jones version will always be the best.
I Agree Whit You.But Both Of Them Are Classy.Dionne Warwick Is A Great Voice Too
I love this one better.
This one will always be the best
The original opening sequence and theme song she better IMO. Sure, there are changes but this major overhaul just didn't age well. DW sings beautifully but the mix is hard to listen to, those waves are so 80s, and the green screening is obvious when we see certain actors and their background scenes.
100% agree
That's got to Dionne Warwick right?
It is
I never knew Dionne Warwick ever recorded The Love Boat Theme until now. It’s not Jack’s (and I only like the ‘79 version), but she does all things well.
Wow me neighter 😀
There were four or five specials that came out after the 9th season ended. Some like to refer to it as a 10th season, but most say it was 9 seasons and 4 (or 5) specials.
@Bradley J We were both right about the 9 seasons, but there were 4 specials that came on after the show ended it's regular series run. One episode, "The Christmas Cruise," was a two-parter.
@@jwavada And Fred Grandy was not in the specials.
@@samsticka I noticed that! He got elected to Congress in 1986, the year the original show ended.
Wait a minute. Did I just see Jefferson Darcy as the ships photographer.
Yes indeed.
The character's name was Ace
@@vjmlhds oh ok. I always thought it was ships photographer. LMFAO.
He took Gophers job in season 10 when Julie returned
@@erikbergquist5632 ohhhhhh
I see the TV show killer himself plays the photographer.
But what a GORGEOUS killer! Yummy!!
Ted McGinley, the infamous "show killer". He gained such a reputation for joining shows during their waning years like "Happy Days", "Dynasty", "Married With Children" and "The Love Boat".
Before smoking weed ate up Warwick's voice and she still sounded good.
Her voice is still great, but were you expecting her to sound like this nearly 40 yrs later????
Funny how Betty White was in 2 shows at the same time. A.B.C. 9 p.m Love Boat and Golden Girls on N.B.C 9 p.m. She killed her own co-star show. Golden Girls killed the Love Boat during the 1985-1986 season.
My Lord!!!! Little Vicki was no longer a little kid. She was now a beautiful young woman!!
getting really cute at 16 in 1982 my Senior year
Do you have the episode where phylicia rashad guest starred??
Hi :) No I'm sorry, I don't. She was in one of the skipped episodes, so I don't have it.
Always loved the way the (Dutch) windmills were shown at 0:20
@ 1:37... The Love Boat Mermaids. I am pretty sure that is Teri Hatcher bottom right.
I would love to hear this version slower like a romantic song
Is it some weird coincidence that every version of the love boat theme on youtube has Betty White in it?
Actually Betty White was Co Starring on the Golden Girls at the time prior to her Co Starring on The Golden Girls she was a Guest Star on Mama's Family in 1983 she was a Guest Star on The Love Boat in 1985 that same year she Co Starred on The Golden Girls until 1991. then she appears on the Golden Girls reunion in 2003. she also Guest Starred on the Mary Tyler Moore Show in 1974 and she did a commercial in 1959. and Betty White wasn't really on TV Shows in the 1960s. there she is on TV from 1959 to 2015.
By reckoning, Betty White would have been 62-63 when she appeared in Season 9, coming 5 years after Allan Ludden's death.
@@michaelj.richard8353 "The Golden GIrls" ended in 1992, not '91.
This was a good show. I watched it when i was younger
R.I.P. Gavin MacLeod :(
Rip Betty white
R.i.p carol channing
Was that Teri Hatcher as a Love Boat “Mermaid”??
Why does everybody seem to accuse Ted McGinley of killing the show? He was actually a regular cast member during season 8 also, so it’s not like the show instantly died as soon as he joined.
It's a slow, painful death.
1:25 no wonder the show came to an end!!!
I'd pretty much stopped watching by then, so this is the first time I've seen this intro.
same here
Wow!@0.10 Istanbul :) and Betty White ♥
Was that Terri Hatcher as one of the mermaids?
I don't like Dionne Warwick's version of the "The Love Boat" theme. I prefer Jack Jones' version better.
It's not just the song that's horrid it was also the revamped graphics. Terrible. It's no wonder this was the final season.
it's been nearly three decades that love boat went off the air and the show lives on today.
RIP Gavin MacLeod
I usually like Dionne Warwick, but, she just sounds shrill singing this. Almost like the notes are too high for her.
Ted McGinley is absolutely beautiful!!!
If he;'s the patron saint of Shark Jumping, he can jump mine anytime! ;)
RIP Gavin Macleod
Rip betty white
Wow, Ms. Warwick!
When Love Boat jumped the shark.
I like Dionne Warwick's rendition.
What about season 9 ep. 13, the one with the Hulkster?
I'm afraid this show had already "jumped the shark" by the time the mermaids came along, though they were there to remind us of that fact. Comparisons with the god-awful Brady Bunch (Variety) Hour are not unwarranted. This is another example of a good light drama/comedy show being ruined by incongruous singing and/or dancing (e.g. anybody remember the last few seasons of Petticoat Junction?).
Next time we'll see Marcy Darcy on What's happenin
Season 9 sucked .I could tell it was the beginning of the end for this show.Come on! The Mermaids?Really? This show was good up til season 8
And the addition of Ted McGinley made the show "Jump the Shark."
MrJacMac1986 I agree with you
But what a jumper! He can jump over mine anytime he wants! ;)
Awww. Betty White was so adorable.
Yes! This is Dionne Warwick singing. I met her and Carol Channing in the same place at my workplace in Los Angeles between 1991-1992.
Usually, I like Dionne Warwick, but I didn't love the way she sang this theme. The original was clearer. The way she sang "love" at 1.33 was long and drawn out and it's hard to understand what she's saying unless you already know the words.
Good Lord, this 2nd version is a perfect female complement to the original. Why didn't they do a Duet as well?!
That voice!!
1:22 Iceburg dead ahead!
How fitting that, immediately after is Ted McGinley.
@@lordsnivyofnottingham2948 You mean.
Wonder if Teri Hatcher is embarrassed, by this old footage?
Considering that she looks embarrassed in the actual footage, I'm guessing yes.
Did you happen to catch her on SuperGirl? I think her sense of shame jumped the shark long ago.
@@mickeymoosf Quit watching Supergirl, after Season 2. The woke and SJW stupidity ended it for me
Whitney Houston would have done this song as well.
don't get mad at ms warwick, if you were paid, you would sing the song as well.
Ted McGinley. Always there to take a TV show to the scrapyard!
It was on for about 3 more years after he joined!
Afret fred grandy my beautiful Puerto rico .el morro ✌
I had this on dvd i regret trading it, I would buy the whole series again
Who sang this theme song, please bring back Jack Jones.
Teri Hatcher in her debut at the end of the video.
1:23 OMG JEFFERSON!
nonsense...Jefferson doesn't work.
Next we'll see Marcy Darcy on Happy Days.
LMFAO. He must be a spy.
Started going downhill when Vickie came on board...
Was this the last season of the show? I'm asking because anytime Ted McGinley joined the cast...
Mia7189 This was the final season of the show. However Ted McGinley actually joined the show as a regular cast member during the next to last season.
Yes it was.
Why on earth did they change the open? This is beyond dreadful.
Betty White !
Rip
Carol Channing is a respected british stageactress, Ted Mcginley played the role of Jefferson in Married with Children
and Betty White in the soap opera " Golden Girls."
I believe Carol Channing has died and she was most definitely American. She was actually biracial, which went completely unnoticed at the time.
That was a sitcom
1:22 Ice burg dead ahead!
Lmfao. Titanic
When u mess with a good thing it's never the same and they got rid of Juile and added crap the love boat sank like the titanic
I thought they HAD to get rid of her?
In Italy the Song by Singer Little Tony.
.
Charles Frank from AMC!
1:09 ¿Cartagena (Colombia)?
With the love boat mermaids
Dionne Warwick !
Genial cuando era pequeño
Beautiful
Hi Dylan
1:01 Hong Kong 😍
I love 💕 it the German version of love boat is okay 👍🏼 but the aUS version is legendary 😊
I completely forgot that Jefferson D’Arcy was on this show!
This is from the episode where Charles Frank's character is an athlete who has frequent fainting spells. The doctor (Bernie Kopell) examines him and tells him he has diabetes.
This version of the theme song and the opening moving pictures are really pulling me emotionally. It stirs me up emotionally. It is so amazing. I’m very captivated with this version. Very beautiful.
I love this theme. Feels like I'm dreaming in paradise.
Man I miss this show.
That's it I'm buying the DVDs.
Wait I can't afford it?
Someday it will be mine oh yes it will be mine.
Ya can always watch The Real Love Boat on tonight,. (rolls eyes)
@@colleen4everI’ll pass on that. CBS eventually passed in it too. LOL.
With a cover like _this,_ it's a shame Don Cornelius was never a guest on there.
R.I.P. Pacific Princess (1970-2013)
1:39 what is the names of the love boat mermaids? I think i know some one. right down teri hatcher, yeah i win a date with her, when?
Please have a Sea. 10 theme (w/o Grandy) ready in the next couple of days or weeks.
I'm watching an episode of season 5 but the theme is sung by a woman?
Yes to Dionne, no to the Solid Gold Mermaids.
Can't say enough about her version.
I never knew this damn show lasted this long lol
why do the later seasons look like they been horribly remastered?
As I child, I believed that the show was doomed and cursed by the change of their theme song. I'm sure there was more to it than that, but I was certain that was why it was cancelled because at the age of 7, that was the most exciting part of the show for me.
timothylegg ..You know mr.legg.i fully agree with you why did they cancel the only show that I ever liked..I was in my late 20s..when they canceled the show.but now iam. still that 70s.disco. freak..But seriously on a sad note,.did you know that they dismantled the original. pacific princess .the.. ship used on the show..on about 2014..those haters try to destroy everything of sentimental. to love boat fans..
Pradeep.... there are some videos of that online... sad.
Sail away, Captain Stubing 1931-2021
I'm sorry but, part of what ruined the show was switching to Dionne Warwick doing the theme song, INSTEAD of cheesy Jack Jones (oh yes, I ADMIT he was PURE CHEESE) But that's part of why the show was such a hit. Now, I have never really been a fan of hers (but here?) Dionne sounds like she's singing out the roof of her mouth, like somebody is squeezing her throat!
They had a reunion just recently (November 2014) - with Lauren Tewes, Fred Grandy, Gavin MacLeod, Ted Lange, Jill Whelan (still very pretty!) and Bernie Kopell and everything. They were christening a new cruise ship.
Remember this show as a kid, loved the original theme music... this just don't fit
I'd like to see the opening to the very short 10th season, which is actually just 4 specials.
The 4 made-for-TV movie specials are called "The Shipshape Cruise", November 21, 1986; "The Christmas Cruise, Part 1" and "The Christmas Cruise, Part 2", December 25, 1986; and lastly "Who Killed Maxwell Thorn?", February 27, 1987. There's a clip of the Christmas movie here on UA-cam but it's really brief and it doesn't feature any of the main cast...but the actual opening themes to those movies aren't on-line, I don't think.
I like it
I know this was The final ABC Season and the theme song isn't bad, I like it, but The Jack Jones version will always be the best, after (The Love Boat) left ABC and came back for a few specials the next fall 1986 to early 1987, "Did they use this theme again or was it redone again?" "Did Captain Stubing, Vicki, Dr. Adam, Gopher, Issac, Ace and Judy return or were there some new cast members?" because I heard Fred Grandy went to Congress so I don't know.
80'sTV TimeMachine for the 1986-87 specials, they used Dionne Warwick's version. Cast credits in order: Gavin MacLeod as your captain, Bernie Kopell as your doctor, Ted Lange as your bartender, Jill Whelan as Vicki, Ted McGinley as your purser, Lauren Tewes as Julie, your cruise director, and Marion Ross as Emily Stubing. Patricia Klous and Fred Grandy left.
@@heidimountain606 Grandy was campaigning for the US House from Iowa when the four specials were filmed. He was elected and served five terms in the House.
Has anyone noticed how when major 80s shows changed their theme songs, they tended to get cancelled one season later. Different Strokes, A-Team, Facts of Life, Love Boat. Never failed - off the air and cancelled usually the season after changing the theme music.
Falcon Crest as well
That's not true for Facts of Life. They changed their theme song in Season 7 and the show ran for 3 more seasons. Btw I really liked the new Season 7 theme song much better than the previous versions.
Gimme a Break changed theme songs too and stayed on for more seasons.
At least Fred Grandy was still on the show when they switched to this version of the theme song.
He was on the series until the end. He did not appear in the movies after or Love Boat The Next Wave’s episode with the cast.
