LIGHT! 💡Strong agree about what you said about readers and empathy, reading allows us insights into worlds and experiences outside of our own and that is one of the best ways to grow empathy in a human. Great wrap up and I love your hat!
I loved your rant, and I agree. Readers, no matter why they say they read, or what they read, are more practiced in putting themselves in another person's shoes than non readers.
"I'm Jesse" more like "I'm RESPLENDANT"--that shade of orange/red is truly made for you! Also Akasha is precious beyond belief and you have the patience of a saint 😆😆 Winter Counts sounds AMAZING! My issue with thrillers is often that Things Happen too fast, so a slower burn sounds perfect, and I love that afterword excerpt you read so much. The cover of You Had Me At Hola is breathtaking, I can't take my eyes off it! I'm glad to hear the inside is just as beautiful. Also: YES PLEASE to the video about why you love horror and romance together. Nightlight sounds so cool! Adding it to my podcasts. I love how much you love this community. That's all ❤️💡
Holy crap, I can't even tell you what NOS4A2 did to me. I read it around this time last year and then when Christmas songs came on the radio I would be like "no, no, noooo thank you!". The creepiness stuck with me for like all of December. Now I'm thinking I really need to reread it! Definitely want to watch the show too.
It's very interesting how some reviewers completely glossed over the micro-agressions of When No One Is Watching!!! It made my stomach hurt in the moments it wasn't even trying to be "scary"
Also I really love your discussion about booktube and I think that’s so true that booktube is a mostly really great community and that books help us experience empathy for others and that’s why readers tend to be more open minded and I think that’s a really beautiful thing! You made a lot of really great points and I’m so happy to share this community with someone like you 🥰❤️
"Readers are particularly situating in practicing empathy" I live for this! I completely agree, the exercise of always putting oneself in the place of the main character or trying to better understand the main character is a constant favorite part of being a reader!
I totally agree about perfecting romance as a side plot in fantasy, thrillers, etc. Also your mini chat about readers and empathy and the booktube community was just 🥺❤️💡💡💡
Thank you for the short discussion about BookTubers..💡💡💡 I'm a new BookTuber and I totally agree with you... I've loved reading since I was a child. I've always loved Fantasy 🎠👑 and now I love to read High Fantasy..👸🤴 It helps with my anxiety. But I am trying to branch off into a different genres.. .. I don't like romance but I will try a Paranormal Romance.💑 .. But over all I enjoy watching other BookTuber's reviews of books and their opinions. Its how I choose a lot of books I read.. 📚🖥... I love the energy of other BookTubers to💕 when they're describing why they hate or love a book... You have great energy.👍🏼📚😊
💡: I’ve been looking for a new podcast! That’s too perfect! I also really want to read something spooky in December but still has holiday vibes so thank you for the NOS4A2 recommendation. 😁
Love your discussion about readers and empathy! I definitely agree with all your points - though some people can use reading just to back up their own opinions, but I think even then they exercise their empathy muscles maybe more than average. Also your description of Nos4a2 is really the first that intrigues me to read the book. But I don't know if my anxiety will let me. Generally I get invested with characters quickly and so knowing the book is horror would make that very stressful. We will see! Also completely recommended Nightlight to my bestie who LOVES horror stories in podcast form. So thanks for sharing!
I was studying for exams last night and saw a new Bowties and Books video and got so excited! (I also love your outfit in this video and the Ana Luisa jewelry) I need to read Gods of Jade and Shadow!💛 I am also SO intrigued by Winter Counts and Blacktop Wasteland. I also really want to read When No One Is Watching, it sounds amazing and has been on my TBR since your discussion video. I’m also not a huge fan of romance but you make You Had Me at Hola sound great! Your stats this month are incredible like 7 books, 90 pages per day, and 4.86 star rating?? That’s awesome 😍 I love what you said about BookTube and reading too!💡
When No One is Watching was so good. I loved the deep sense of history that made the horror elements that much stronger. This was a story that even when my stomach was churning I knew I had to see it through. I listened to the audiobook of Gods of Jade and Shadow, which I can definitely recommend. Putting NOS4A2 on my December TBR. 💡💡💡
Just started Freshwater from your reccomendation and I gotta make another trip to the library. Perfect timing for a thriller dump yaaaaaasssssss. Oh and liiiiight
Adore the hat. I'm reading NOS4A2 but I admit I haven't picked it up lately. Joe's writing reminds me of his dad's. Light. I enjoyed God's of Jade and Shadow too.
💡hey I appreciated your improv on readers being empathetic. It’s one of things I really get out of reading! Already have Gods of Jade and Shadow on my TBR, but definitely moving them up the list based on your insights on them. NOS4A2 is one of my all time favorite books! Loved hearing someone talk about it so fondly!
Ok. First...you're gorgeous, as always. Now... I'd love to hear why you don't like romance as the main plot or genre. I don't either. Usually, I steer clear of romance proper altogether as well. So much so, that I'm FINALLY reading The Kiss Quotient, and it's the first romance I've read since I was a teenager.
found someone that also loves thrillers!!! i read them all year long. Im excited to pick up When No One Is Watching but i have so many books in my tbr already 😩
I read When No One Is Watching last month and absolutely loved it, I'm new to the genre so it's really easy to surprise me and shock me, but the idea was so incredibly original. I have this feeling that all the thrillers that discuss contemporary and real topics are so much scarier than those discussion paranormal ones! Now I genuinely want to listen to the audiobook 'cause you sounded so excited about it!!
💡 You have such a strong hat game! I'll definitely check some of these books out. But first I'm listening to The Burning God which I'm getting today and I'm so excited!!!
I've been eyeing Joe Hill's books for a while now but have been iffy to pick them up because I was afraid his portrayals of women and womanhood would be like his dad's.i know, I know its kind of close-minded of me to have assume that but for whatever reason, I did. However, you have made me excited to give him a try and the premise of NOS4A2 sounds really good! 💖 NightLIGHT 💡 also sounds so good, will definitely be checking out!
No i was also really worried he would write women the way King does. He def doesn’t!!! At the end of the audiobook, he has an interview where he talks about how his mother taught him to write women. The whole interview was super insightful
I've been hesitate to read anything by Joe Hill but you made that book sound so intriguing! And I agree with you about booktube, I can't believe I've been a reader for so long and only just discovered it last year!
I totally agree with you! Reading is being open to educating yourself, self-reflection and learning. Oh, and something similar happens to me regarding romance. I don't like these cute romance books because I don't believe in these story, so I need something dark to give them a different shade. Thanks for the book reviews. I added like half to my TBR! 🤣🤣🤣🤣
Nightlight sounds interesting, I'll have to check that out when Sesamy is asleep, because he can't do scary without the light💡on. (I'm too proud about having fitted that in). Horror romance is a thing?? Not sure if I'm going yay about that or not, romance is usually something that makes me want to put something down, maybe that would change it
I know exactly what you mean about feeling like you can trust an author enough to relax while reading! I might have to check out Joe Hill just based on that piece alone. So often I just want to read a book for the story, but get so distracted/exhausted from shitty representations of people minoritized by gender (among other things).
I will say, she does endure lots of bullshit and trauma perpetuated by men but shes still a fully realized character in her own right with her own agency and motivation and ugh she was beyond special
I just read Winter Counts and I was also really moved by the authors note at the end, it was very eye-opening and sad to learn. I totally agree with that other comment that you should check out the movie Wind River, it’s sooo good and so important (but major trigger warning for rape, it’s quite brutal to watch but it’s a damn good movie)
💡 so glad you enjoyed Winter Counts! I'm mid read right now, and agree the pacing slow down about in the middle. N0S4A2 has been on my radar for a while but wasn't sure if I would like it or not. Will definitely be picking it up now!
💡💡💡 still have a few weeks for When No One is Watching hold 🙄 but I did recently finished The Death of Vivek Oji and I already bought a hard copy! The audiobook was AMAZING! I haven’t sobbed with a book for a long time! Can’t wait to reread it and take in more information than the first time!
NOS4A2 has a really good TV adaptation that came out a year or two ago that you might like! I think it ages down some of the characters but it's really good and I was terrified the whole time!
The protagonist from Follow Me to the Ground and Pet from Pet by Emezi come to mind! I’ll start making a list of these characters and hopefully turn it into a video someday!
I have read so many great books that you have recommended. Thank you for your amazing content and commentary ❤️ Fun fact - Joe Hill is Stephen King's son!
please do the horror romance video bc....... that's my bit.. love it the most~ also, nos4a2 been on my list for the loooongest, but now I'm finally excited to pick it up the way you talked about it 🤩 I don't usually like podcasts, but I liked lovecraft country's, so I'll definitely checkout nightlight! thanks for the rec. I always love to catch black horror anywhere I can find it :3 💡💡
Though i im halfway through Mexican Gothic and debating on temporarily dnfing for now 🥴 lol Gods of Jade and Shadows sounds SO FREAKING GOOD lol. I love when prominent or powerful historical figures are thrusted into our reality and dont know what the heck is going and are just like little vicious beans 🤣 Sleepy Hollow the tv show is a good example if you've ever seen it! 💡💡💡
it needs to be said: this is such a look!!! the hat!!! the lipstick!!!! 💡💡💡 I looooved When No One is Watching - and have been referring so many people to your white authors/Black thrillers video. the audacity + privilege of saying this isn't a thriller....phewwww.
I really want to read gods of jade and shadow and you made me all the more exciting. And wow, what a stat about the tribal / indigenous cases not being taken on D: I should read something by Joe Hill honestly. Also agreee on the dehumanising of celebrities / creators so much.
I'm a super coward, I like thrillers but not horror, but I really really want to read NOS4A2. I don't know if I'd be able to handle it but it sounds so cool!
Maybe I'll try the audio book on your recommendation, I will add it to my want to read shelf on Goodreads and when I can pick up the audio book I'll try it:)
Light 💡, your content is quality. Do you ever read Octavia E. Butler or Samuel R. Delaney? I'm reading their complete catalog. Can't wait. I am a non-white Black and Chickasaw and I participate in many book clubs that read exclusive books by black and Chickasaw.
I'm absolutely grabbing Gods of Jade and Shadow right now, immediately, it was on my radar for a while and if you've liked it, it's even more reason to buy (for some reason I end up buying books because you recommended them specifically? I already got Raybearer and The Vanished Birds). Also Nightlight sound amazing and I'm absolutely bookmarking it on Spotify to check out 💡
@@JesseOnUA-cam I have started it but due to covid lockdowns coming and going I mainly was working from home and I listen to podcasts while going to work. I'm looking forward to continuing it though because since then I have gone further into the horror genre!
Hi, I've come across the booktube community and your channel for a while now and I really love the content that you've created on your channel. You really had shown me more books by black people than my old bookstore job did, which blows my mind. I really want to ask your opinion on becoming a booktube creator.
Hi hi! Ok so feel free to email me if you want but overall I recommend to just POST! You can always private your videos or delete them later but my biggest regret is not starting my channel SOONER
Wow you had such a great reading month! You made me want to reread NOS4A2 right away 😍 I have to say though, I also read Joe Hill's first novel, Heart-Shaped Box, and I didn't like how women were written. I don't remember if I found it sexist but I thought it was very cliché! Anyways, I'm so glad I read NOS4A2 because I could see how he had evolved as a writer! I loved it so much and I also adooore his graphic novel series Locke and Key 😍 I almost cried at the end of the series because I got so attached to the characters ❤️
@@JesseOnUA-cam Maybe I will 😊 I started 20th Century Ghosts by Hill and so far I haven't found a story that I love, but apparently Pop Art is really good, so I'm excited for this one. Have y'all read Locke & Key??
Never apologize for impromptu discussions, I enjoy them. Some of my favorite moments in videos.
I will never understand how someone can think that When No One Is Watching is not a thriller. I was terrified
Same!!!!
Honestly I'm so glad to have found this little corner of the Internet and met so many lovely people in the booktube community!
Off topic but you should really wear that hat more often. I don't even know why I got distracted looking at the hat!!
Agree the hat is amazing

I need to know more about this horror/romance genre I didn't know I needed. I need the video and recommendations pretty please.
Gods of Jade and Shadow has been on my radar for a while now. But NOS4A2 sounds so up my alley! I am definitely going to look into it.

How people don’t see When No One Is Watching as a thriller is disappointing but not surprising. 💡💡💡
Exactly
Oh no, I had to DNF Gods of Jade and Shadow because I didn't like the audiobook narrator. I need to pick up a physical copy so I can finish it!
Ooo now I’m super curious to see if I like the audio!
I loved it so much and I also adooore his graphic novel series Locke and Key 😍 I almost cried at the end of the series because I got so attached to the characters ❤️
relate to this comment with my whole heart 🧛🏾♂️ will u be rereading nos4a2 this year?
@@JesseOnUA-cam Maybe I will 😊 I started 20th Century Ghosts by Hill and so far I haven't found a story that I love, but apparently Pop Art is really good, so I'm excited for this one. Have y'all read Locke & Key??
You look stunning today.
light... I also listen to When no one is watching on audio and man was I scared asf
