  • From bcfarmsandfood.... - Rebecca Jehn shows us 23 of the unique heirloom bean varieties she is helping to pass on to future generations. Among Jehn’s treasures are such unusual pulses as the Cave bean, which traces its history back 1,500 years.
Heirloom dried bean growers like Rebecca Jehn preserve a wealth of traditions, diversity and flavors not found in today’s mechanized food chain. At her farm at Rebecca’s Garden in Victoria, British Columbia, she grows over 30 heirloom and heritage varieties of beans, chickpeas and lentils.
Heritage and heirloom bean varieties have been passed down through families and friends for generations and are prized for their unusual colours, flavours, sizes and textures.
    Featured heritage beans include:
    Agate pinto bean
    Beka Brown bean
    Black Coco bean
    Black Kabuli chickpea
    Black Turtle bean
    Borlotti bean
    Cannellini bean

Thanks for all the lovely beans! Wondering if you find it necessary for home gardeners to distance their pole beans to prevent cross-pollination? I'm trying my hand at more seed saving and have read varying thoughts on this.

I crossed a 1,500 year old Cave Bean, with a Pinto Heirloom this year. I was curious if anyone is aware, of another Cave Bean\Pinto Hybrid? Thanks

I recently bought a similar bean mix from Costco and I'm sure there not the same.

so when grow these do let dry on plant. then keep or do have do special get keep. do only grow one kind so don't cross? so every year only grow one? got lot bean pest? I grew sweet potatoes years was carving punkin patterns into them then stinky yellow and black Beatle showed up start trouble. found pray mantises like eat them but think this year not grow them hope with food source gone they leave. so with beans grow every year or do hold off year so pest leave? how beans get plant? is any that afraid losing just don't have to many beans saved? best luck bean farming.
