If you are worried about using a rubber band, just plait the hair about an inch then continue.

I think if you buy the thicker rubber bands it won't pop and the braids will still be in tact.

Had me til I saw the rubber bands… might achieve this without the use of rubber bands!
They often snap and pull my hair out… 😲
