I saw GnR 11 days after this show at Pittsburgh's Civic Arena, when they were opening for Aerosmith. My cousins and I went to see GnR, and they did not disappoint. At least to my 15 year old ears, they blew Aerosmith off the stage. I never saw a band so ferocious on stage ever again, not even the 1993 version of GnR.
Thank you so much for posting this. Everyone in the comments are right. This footage is so precious and for so many reasons. I'm praying someday Axl will allow the proshot video from this show to be released. My hunch though is we probably won't because of those people who were trampled to death. God bless though souls who died that day.
OK Irregardless of the imperfect video quality, just having this recorded and uploaded on UA-cam is a rare GEM. Thank you so much to the uploader of this video!
As great as this was... and I was there... two rock n roll brothers died during this set and numerous people had life changing injuries. Keep safe and keep rocking.
The image is not that good, but I am shocked at how the quality of the sound is great. Sound is clear and almost perfect, very clean. Thank you for posting this!
i was there crushed up against the barrier stage right with my friend,12 days after my 15 th birthday,13 days after my friends 15th. when axl stopped the crowd there was a woman near us whos boots had come off int he crush and her feet were all bloody and broken when the crowd passed her over to the medics
People don't realize that yes just like you saw he stopped it he tried to stop the crowd as well. Again they don't realize that he does this to help the people that are hurt, getting hurt, or about to get hurt. He's really not a bad guy and he didn't do that to be a bad guy he did it for the sake of someone who was getting hurt...
The events at this particular concert stayed with them forever. He felt the losses very deeply.. and had a difficult time recovering from this incident.
@@witchywendywoo9553 yes I've seen many concerts where he's done this but yet he is the riot starter. It's funny when you're someone like him you will always be labeled and stereotyped. He was free he did what he wanted how he wanted when he wanted because he could. People just jealous of this the events here saddened him and all deeply.🌹
I was there as a 16 year old with my twin brother. It was my second time at Donington, and perhaps the best. GnR were near the bottom of a 6 band bill having been scheduled before Appetite broke really big in the UK. When GnR came on stage we were quite near the front and the place went nuts. We only found out later 2 people had been crushed to death. I've seen GnR again in the early 90s, in the 2010s (no Slash/Duff) and most recently in 2016... they are still a great band but nothing compares to the energy of them in 88. This is a great video - capturing a truly great band in their heyday.
If we ignore the tragedy that happened here, and I know that’s hard, it’s incredulous to underestimate Steven Adler’s influence on this band particularly live. After 1988 they never sounded this good again. Paradise City was so slow and flat with Matt & Gilby in the band. 1988 was their peak and nobody will ever convince me otherwise.
I was stood about 10 metres behind the guy filming it!! Awesome day - RIP our pal Keith who was with us that day who is longer with us today. He was sat on our shoulders during Kiss - he loved them
Ty for the post! Audio is decent! There is film of this show that is in the vaults ( used for the Paradise City video). I really hope it sees the light of day!
At least they actually cared about the people getting crushed in the crowd. Travis literally told the crowd to shut up when there were dead bodies being tred on
I was there, no amount of hyperbole gets over how scary the surge and crush was, so glad that once it started me and my friends pushed our way in the opposite direction and got out to the side of the crowd by the time Megadeth came on.
yea was at the front 17 came over from the west of ireland, fell down in the crush but lucky some one pulled me up. it was a great performance, tragic two people died.
Must admit Axl Rose sings live he definitely goes for it! Let's it rip. He definitely has a real powerful voice live. His voice is still powerful on the studio albums. But live more powerful. In my mind one of the best vocalist in rock. Never gets recognise for it. Shameful because he should.
I think I must have been standing next to this bloke that day as that's exactly as I remember it. I also remember how the crowd surged.and.you.were lifted off your feet. It was time to move backwards then
I was at this gig - aged 17 - was a brilliant day! Didn't know people died until after, but we got caught in the crush and had to literally fight our way out.... Megadeth and Iron Maiden also played great sets
Glad I wasn't at the front during the stampede. Rest in piece to those souls! Axl knows what is going on here and it's pretty fucked up watching it! Great audio tho!!
He didn’t know people died till after the show, he just saw the crowd getting rowdy and told them to calm down, unlike Travis Scott who encouraged them
