    A huge thank you again for you’re video, the past several months my 2002 forester ( old car) as needed maintenance, which thanks to all you tubers has saved me massive worry and cost by doing these jobs myself, ( not mechanically minded) I realised that the forester isn’t hard to work on , but getting great info from videos as been an enormous help and relief thank you again, it is extremely appreciated, now I will service my transmission, I’m daz from australia

    Great how to video thanks. The only issue I have is that if you got the filter off amazon and not the dealer you probably got a clone and not a real OEM. If it's a lot cheaper then the dealer chances are it's not a real OEM part. It may look the same but is not. Amazon is not to be trusted with after market auto parts. Sorry.

    How much fluid do it take to fill it ?

    • @garageworker
      @garageworker  9 місяців тому

      The pan takes around 4 quarts of fluid, I bought a jug as pictured and had enough to fill it up. I would put a few quarts in and start checking the dip stick to get the correct fluid level.

    I watched videos they say if you change transmission fluid, it make transmission slip. Did you have that problem? Thank you

    • @garageworker
      @garageworker  Рік тому +1

      I have not personally had that problem. I think that logic comes from if you had a transmission that hasn't been serviced in let's say 200K miles, don't start now. The fluid has so much clutch material in it that when you put new fluid in, it's too slippery for the clutch packs to grab on. They have friction modifiers for that incase it happens, like Lucas ATF additive.
      I personally, just follow Subaru's service manual. Plus the fluid change on this car is so easy. It would be a judgement call for your own car.

      Manual Transmission?

    • @freebird889
      @freebird889 Рік тому

      @@garageworker do manuals have transmission fluid? I was just at Walmart with my manual and they told me they wouldn't give me an oil change because I have a catastrophic oil and transmission leak. I'm pretty sure they're just not wanting a lawsuit or something, but I explained to them it's actually in the head gasket and that oil leak was from when I was adding it and the wind was blowing hard. They still refused. I don't remember ever hearing about transmission fluid in my manual though....

    • @BlackwaterDSM
      @BlackwaterDSM Рік тому

      @@freebird889 You do not have ATF (Automatic Transmission Fluid), but a Manual Trans absolutely DOES contain lubricant, it’s called “Gear Oil”, and it’s more like a thick motor oil. Most are 75w90 type oil, but I recommend you check your service manual or search online for the specific fluid for your car. Most manual transmissions will have 2 plugs, a top “Fill” plug and a lower “Drain” plug. Usually you drain it all out, and with the car sitting level, you have to pump the fluid into the fill hole (on the side of the trans) just until it starts to pour back out of the hole, thereby indicating it is full. Re-install the fill plug and torque to spec. Super easy to do, just make sure you have a hand pump ($20 at most auto stores) or you’re gonna have a rough time trying to get the fluid in. 👍🏻

      The pan holds around 4 quarts when you drain it. As you put fluid in keep checking that dip stick.

    I would t trust a filter from Amazon, I once got a counterfeit timing belt tensioner pulley that almost ended in disaster… Subaru rates the tranny filter for life, no need to replace.

    • @garageworker
      @garageworker  Рік тому

      It's the only one I've seen that looks like that. The bottom of the filter even says "ATF Filter". I've heard many stories of lube technicians draining the transmission fluid instead of the motor oil because they look so much alike.

    😕 So um….it’s actually kinda compromised by changing fluid. You take away the material from the wearing of the bands. It’s harml😢 moving around and actually makes it work longer because it can hook up longer. It’s not terrible but it’s not great either. I only change my fluid if it gets water incursion or starts smelling burnt. I have 297k plus miles on my 05 Forester. More immediately necessary and vital to change is the rubber portion of the transmission cooler lines!! 😅 I had one ruptured and I could very likely wrecked my transmission because it happened but thankfully I was actually at Walmart when it happened and I had everything necessary to fix it before I went anywhere but if I was on the road I very well could have locked up my transmission.😔
    I had to add a gallon and I stopped immediately when it burst! ❤️🖖🏼🇺🇸✌🏼

    • @garageworker
      @garageworker  Рік тому

      I've heard that, but I always thought it applied to neglected transmissions. Like if it hasn't been changed in 200K, don't start now. I just follow the service manuals routine maintenance list and do what Subaru says to.
