Hi Stan, it used to be around Halloween when they show here, but been getting later and later, and now its mid Nov before they show on the lower Yukon. always tough fishing with nets freezing up and ice flowing and not very safe yet. But better than 5'ft I guess :)
That's a shitload of eels, wow, the numbers of them must be phenomenal. How do you clean and cook them, they look like an oily fish. Very nice video..you absolutely nailed it with that tune!!!
+SwampDonkey530 Thanks, Yes they run thick for a few days each fall around Halloween ,we cut the heads with holes off and bake or fry or even jar them , they don't have much for guts so we dont bother gutting them, they are very rich and oily , you can taste them where ever they sell sushi ask for smoked eel it taste the same..
Thanks Jeff, great video once again! Do they also come for spawning in the river or what is going on? I'm surprised to see how easily the yukon eels stay on the ice :) I've got some european eels in my fish trap, never eaten them so far but it's funny to watch how fast they find their way back to water. Old fishermen say it's better to have a wooden boat where you can nail the eel somewhere for taking it home :)
Thanks VK yes they are spawning in fresh water they live in the ocean attached to salmon most of their life. you might want to try one of those EU eels they might be good try bake one :)
VK Its too cold to smoke outside here now or I would try that they are very oily I bake for 40 minutes at 350 f and dump off the excess oil and bake another 20 minutes.
VK That's a interesting looking steam bath but I think I might catch cold in there looks too big and roomy :) mine is ready in about 30 minutes with usually one load of wood even in winter I am going to light it up here in a few minutes :)
yukonjeffimagery ...might catch cold :) You should have been in the World Sauna Championships, too bad it's too late now. They stop it when it got out of hands in 2010. The toughest guy got serious skin, lung ... injuries and had to be kept 3 weeks in medical coma. The second toughest died of third-degree burns. In the end the unlucky guys were both rejected because they weren't able to get out of the sauna unaided :)
+timothy mcswain Ha! .. they are good baked some jar them too they taste sort of like sardines, try ask for smoked eel in a sushi bar and they are pretty much the same.
How you know when they are running? Just keep going down to the river and testing until you catch some? Hear anything about if Pat Moore in Tannana got enough eals that he and his dogs can survive the winter? I'm friends with Charley Wright on FB maybe I will ask him. Give you a 5 on the music it suited the video but not Iatolla of Rock and Rolla type song.
Oh That's who you are talking about I don't have tv so never saw any of those Yukon men shows. And yes we have to check the river daily or we will miss them they only come through for a day or two we need the right ice conditions as well since its during freeze up when the ice is running. And thanks I will be back on the hard core rock music next video. :)
No we bake or fry them mostly some people jar them. If you order smoked eel in a sushi bar them are smoked and tasty in some kind of sweet sesame sauce.
awesome job as always Jeff thanks for sharing !!
Thanks for coming ! along glad you enjoyed it.
Those are lamprey...
Yes Arctic Lamprey
another fantastic vid..and I still love your choice of music :)
Hey Thanks Lindsay! glad you have good taste in music too :)
Amazing fishing. I hear it's about December when they go by here in Tanana but never saw anyone try for them. 4 to 5' of ice then is probably why?

Where is it in Yukon, it looks very interesting, good music, great work。Real Alaska Life
I am 70 miles inland from the Bering Sea coast, on the Yukon River in Alaska.
Very interesting. I imagine they would make good marten bait too.
Yes they do make decent marten bait and fox too if tainted.
no shit there is a market for those eels? nice I hope you get your cut before you freeze:-)
I got 800 lbs so far, mostly in just a few hours X $1.50 a lb = :)
