It was a good a day as we can ask for. Thanks for the invite on the butter boat. Looking forward to many more adventures in the future brother with you. 🙂🙂
Keith learned that there are even more tasty fish in the sea, you learned that you're ready to invest in a larger cast net. Sounds like a great day for both of you, thanks for sharing.
I really like the positivity of sharing and letting the whole community grow together. We all need to bring each other up. It's such a rewarding feeling.
I spent a year in Sweden as an exchange student. Herring is so big there! Pickled, in cream sauce, etc. Only, I never had them fresh! Would love to try them one day! I love them in cream sauce and pickled. Which was saying something for a 16 yo at the time! Learned to eat all kinds of foods since then, and I know, that is a good thing! Thank you, for an impressive show!
I learned from my good friend Robert Cerny, to eat pickled herring in wine sauce at 12 midnight on new years eve in 1968, for good luck and $ fortune in the coming year. It's worked very well, I am 75 now and have a net worth of over $2M! Try it!
We used 50/50 cornmeal and flour, just take the head and guts scale them roll in flour/cornmeal mix and shallow fry in oil or butter. Season the mix with your favorite seasoning. Delicious 🙌
Awesome job with the net. We dipped for smelt in upstate New York as a kid. Great memories with uncles on the water. Thank you for taking the time to share your experience.
I have watched both of your channels for awhile now so it was great to see you both do a trip together. Looked like great fun and the Herring looked pretty good to eat as well!! Also, nice to see you still have the Whaly.
This is an awesome collab! I learned alot from Keith's teachings. I think you guys ought to go troll for salmon together and talk about the differences of methods between kayaking and boating.
Hey Dude, here in Germany we pickle hering and eat it as a salad with cream. Sounds strange but is lovely. When you add beetroot it turns pink. Raw onions and potatoes. Super quick meal.
Yes the Whaly is back! Herring is delicious….we have them for breakfast occasionally, salted and dried then fried, accompanied with garlic fried rice and a fried egg. 👍🏽
Loved this one Matt, please do more bait fish catch and cook, but straight fried, salt, pepper, onions white and green, garlic, butter, and few splashes of lime and white vinegar and please tell me how it goes if you try it.
Lost Anchovy fits Keith to a tee! I think I have fished around you before when I was in California. Love my contacts from the NCKA. Great bunch of guys to hang out with on the water
Spot burning leads to increased pressure on the environment, not just the fish population. It means more trash, more crushed mussels, more plants trampled on, in what maybe was a more pristine spot that fewer, more responsible anglers used. There's plenty of public places the city, county, or state list for beginners to find fishing spots.
Ive heard of "spot burning". People complaining, about fishing spots, is so overrated. Let people fish and have a good time. Good Vibes, happy fishing, and positive thinking. Fishing wouldn't be called fishing if it was easy, it'll be called catching
Used to eat for lunch almost everyday at work, my boss used to make a big deal of the smell, so 1 day i flipped his seat upside down and poured the juice from the fish on the bottom. he never complained again.
The spawn in NorCal and the Lost Coast has been very early this year. Glad you’re taking advantage of the free bait. I’d get on it if I had a freezer in my car im living out of lol
Drowning is biggest safety risk for waterfowl hunters and fishermen on the water- consider making a "no waders" rule on the boat. its one thing to rescue a 200lb person, and a another to try and rescue them with another 200lb of water in their waders.
Awesome Matt when my notification bell came on and seen it's Fisherman's life I immediately stopped what I was doing and turned on the big screen. I believe with this pandemic going on and the price of food skyrocketing some people that's all they can afford to live off the land. Anyways epic video Matt and you stay safe out there and have a blessed day and continue the great video's you do. Aloha from Kansas
Cant wait to see the future videos when you use those for bait, thats if you dont eat ALL of them lol. Great to see TLA in the video, always loved his videos and the knowledge he shares. I would read his blog years ago to learn which tide is best for the different bay species and how I know that today is because of him. Loved this collaboration!
Fishing in the area you’re in makes all the difference. Living in NM is hard especially this winter. But I’m hoping with the improvement such as fish habitats and better quality waters things will change.
@Jersey City alot of fish actually, seabass, flounder, cod, are some of the fish that are here alot. Herring is something dutch people eat alot of because it tastes really good! We eat it with union and pickles. Rich in omega 3 and vitamines.
Great video! Brings back memories of the 1970's, we used to snag them with a large treble hook, when thousands of Herring spawn at the Coyote Point Park in San Mateo.
I'm surprised that Herring is considered to be a 'bait' fish in the States, as it is a very healthy oily fish to eat. Tthough it has lost popularity since the 1970's here in the UK, herring has often been eaten. When cold-smoked, we call them 'kippers' and again, though they've lost popularity, they are thought of as a breakfast food or tea-time treat. I personally don't like kippers, and have never tried unsmoked herring, but I do know Mum and Dad liked kippers. Mind you, seeing the size of the first fish you caught, perhaps I shouldn't be surprised at all. The Herring in the UK are only landed if they are at least two or three times that size. As they have a lot of pin bones in them, they need to be a good size to make them a worthwhile fish to prepare and eat!
Believe me, in Seattle herring are very popular, especially among older Scandinavian folks. Ya, sure, you betcha! Lightly grilled over alder to get a bit of smoke. Yum.
@@MK-qb5qv I often see something called 'Rollmop' Herring in the chilled fish section in our supermarkets, which I believe is something similar. As I said, herring was once very popular here in the UK, or perhaps I should say England, because I don't know if the other three UK nations have followed the same trend. I believe kippers are still quite popular, as is Herring Roe, but the fresh fish itself isn't eaten so much now, as far as I can tell. I suspect it comes down to a familiar tale: herring was over fished round our shores, the stocks crashed and for some time, Herring wasn't fished to allow their numbers to recover.. By the time they had, a generation had grown up without eating it, and forgotten about it.It can be a fiddly fish to prepare and cook, and being an oily fish, gets strong tasting and 'fishy' as it gets older. These days, people want fish they can just shove in the oven to cook, or better still, get it from the fish and chip shop, and they've lost the taste for Herring and other oily fish...
Another awesome video. Not sure if you knew, but that was Nick Fish on his AI kayak netting right under Spinnaker. I paddled over in the blue kayak when you guys were wrapping it up. So GRATEFUL to have finally caught a herring spawn. Love watching your videos but I must say that it's even better seeing it this stuff in person!

Nice work mat 👍 love the new Collab still being your self. That's y I can watch you bro you love to fish and help others the man. thanks for the content.
In the Philippines we dry herring. afterwards you can grill or fry them. but whats best with it is what we call paksiw, it's boiling it with vinegar, ginger and tomatoes until the vinegar is almost in a saucy consistency and the herring bones are soft.. dip with chili lemon and fish sauce..eat it with rice..
Electrical tape weaved around the weights keeps the net from closing too early. As soon as the net hits the water, it starts closing, especially when there is a little tension on the line. I've got one arm and have been throwing nets for 30 years.
Herring is a delicacy in Northern Europe. The Dutch fur example eat them raw with finely chopped white onions served in something that reminds me of the container a NYC dirty water dog is served in. It's held up by the tail became and bit from the bottom. FRied anchovy in Portuguese dishes are delicious as well! YUMM!
In the village up in Alaska we cook then whole. Scale then and make x’s on the out side skin to allow the bones to get crisp and you don’t notice that the fish has bones when you eat it. Nice to see other still eating herring. Right on man.
I think it is awesome when guys share secrets on whatever when it comes to fishing. Because a lot of fishermen are just trying to feed their families. And just trying to catch fish. Love his videos
Atlantic herring is fattier then the pacific herring and therefore better suited for raw eating. I grew up in Holland and had no idea it was raw till my mom told me. After getting past that idea I went right back to enjoying them green herring. Pickled herring is also good if raw herring is not available. Great video.

Up here in the North East ( Long Island) we usually catch them by pole from local piers with sabiki rigs. Worst season this year as the Atlantic Herring fishery is facing major issues.
Herring (nishin) used to run in large numbers in Otaru, Hokkaido near Sapporo. They barreled them and used them for fertilizer. These days the runs are small but fresh nishin is a wonderful sushi fish. I did have a frozen nishin for breakfast and it wasn't nearly as good. I also tried nishin sushi at the airport...also not as good as the really fresh sushi-ya in Otaro. Im a fan and intend on catching fresh herring in WA state soon. Love your show.
Love eating herrings too a lot of people sleep on hearing don't want to eat them but they are great fish as long as you season them properly and cook them hard you can eat it with no problem
Take the gills off and wash. Throw the whole fish in the grill..scales on. The scales will burn , oil will drip..prepare kikoman soy sauce..spicy with a little lemon for dip. With steamed rice...yummm..island style
We buy it here in India and deep fry them after gutting and scaling…with some turmeric salt and red chilli power in coconut oil….that’s it…you will never regret it.
those "bait fish" takes me back when my late mom cooks those like Spanish style sardines in a pressure cooker 6lbs at a time, heads and tails removed. sliced whole pickles, peppercorns, bay leaves, olive oil, and some water. we'd have really good eating fish for weeks, even months!😊
The best way to eat Herring is acc to me as a Swede, Just gut them and remove the head and back bone, Fry them with salt and pepper serve with freshly made potato mash with butter. Crazy good!
Thanks bro , another episode as I sit back with my bulletproof coffee it don't get no better...... And Lost Anchovy on the Collab , that's what's up , do more collab's you 2 ..🤝🏼
Good catch, I'm glad you got a decent meal out of it. up here in Maine they sell cold smoked herring at some of the local stores. It is very salty and has a strong flavor. You have to eat it in moderation because one fillet contains enough sodium to make most people sick. I respect you guys for demonstrating that any fish can taste good if you know the right way to cook it. The areas where I fish contain an abundance of Atlantic mackerel. They make great striper bait, but no one around here would even consider eating them. unfortunately people don't realize that mackerel are a good eating fish if you know the right way to cook them. The trick is to keep them fresh. Soon as you land them you need to clean them out and throw them on ice because if you don't they will spoil. It's also important to peel the skin off before cooking otherwise it will taste like a bait fish. I'm sure the same would apply to herring as it is a soft fleshed fish that is prone to spoiling quickly. I love your videos and I look forward to seeing more content in the future.
Nice video. We're fortunate to still have a herring spawn being that they're on the bottom of the food chain. Yeah. Some mixed feelings. I just hope people are responsible when harvesting.

I love your videos and I look forward to seeing more content in the future.
try a japanese style preparation of mackeral...and eat with rice...it rocks.
This is what we do every year with the white bass run in March - May where I live. Clean and cook them up the same way.
In the Netherlands we eat these things cured with pickles and onion. Its a dutch delicacy
Bad net throws are called "tacos!"
Nice video. We're fortunate to still have a herring spawn being that they're on the bottom of the food chain. Yeah. Some mixed feelings. I just hope people are responsible when harvesting.
recreational harvesting will not make a dent...talk to the fishing boats...
Man, those looked so good!! You wouldn't even have to ask me twice! I'd eat em' in a heartbeat!!
Very very small compared to what i am used to here in Norway but they will do the job both as bait and food for sure.
