I own an FS-91R and love it. It really helps with the thicker SE Louisiana grass. (Dat torque!) Plus I’m a big guy so weight isn’t and issue. The factory Stihl head is ok for a tap and go but the Speedfeed is way easier to re-spool. Echo has Stihl in that department. I figured I spend a little more ($300 new) for a unit I can maintain for a decade or more rather than a cheapo unit that will last a couple of seasons. I contemplated the FS-94 as an alternative but I figured the extra torque would be better for the pole saw attachment or brush cutting when I needed it.

This is the same thing my Husqvarna is doing. I replaced the carburetor, spark plug, fuel lines and filter. The Air filter and as soon as it warms up it dies. I will try to adjust the carb. Hopefully the same as your Stihl. Thanks for putting this video out.
Not one minute of regret on my Stihl purchase. My complaint, if any is that I should have purchased a rancher model based on my yard. Four years no issues. Performed my spring check, burn off the carbon & now adjust the carburetor. 👊🏾
I would pick up a used one in a heartbeat! I use a friend’s Stihl on his yard and a Shindaiwa on mine. I use a shoulder strap on the Stihl but don’t need one for the Shindaiwa because it is so light.
I own several chainsaws, blowers and weedeaters made by Stihl. They are reliable, durable and require little service as a homeowner with 3.5 acres to cut and trim. As a retired automotive technician I find it no more problem to service than anything else I've owned. Never been back to the dealer for service. Most problems are fuel related and I dump mine at the end of the season and only use premium fuel. Works for me.
Good ol’ STIHL. That one just needed adjustment. No biggie. Never had a STIHL product fail on me. Reliable as hell. Well, that’ll go for most brands if maintained correctly. But, ya know, unfortunately a lot of people in this don’t give two shits about their engines. Anyway, great video!
@@flix8743 I'm going to say yes. I hesitate because even if it was running slightly lean, it should still have carbon on the tail pipe. Its best to remove the spark plug and its thats black as coal then I would say its definitely running rich.
Hi thank you, I'm normally pretty good with mix motors, I've checked all the usuals mix ,filters spark ect, didn't realize the the adjustment screws would move from normal use, I do have to adjust my chain saw but never figured it on the trimmer. Peace and thank you
Hello sir, I have an echo-30weedwacker, I watched the video on starts but wont stay running and figured that would do the trick and it probably would have except apparently, there are NO adjustment screws on the carburetor otherwise I checked all the usuals, and the filter in the fuel container. What else can cause it to start but not stay running? The adjustment screw I found seems to control the idle speed but not the fuel air mix flow. Any advise would be appreciated. Thank you.
My Stihl edger idles low like this one, but it doesn’t quit by itself. I do like my equipment to idle lower because it consumes less fuel if I need to check something and don’t want to stop the engine
In my experiences I think stihl trimmers have more torque but I found they also have the most problems, especially with the carb. Echo’s are cheaper but have less power, but they also really reliable and last wayyyy Longer then stihl. That’s just my opinion. Have a good rest of your day
I have a UK Stihl FS38 and it's doing the same thing so will have to look at that as it's embarrassing when it keeps cutting out. Big up from Scotland 👍
As a former service mgr/mechanic I found Husqvarnas hard to service (trained on Stihl), Stihl and Echo were easiest, but for quite a while had no dealer in the area (Echo) even though they were based/made about 100 miles from here. Now I'm more inclined to go with Echo as they keep their units more basic. Stihl and Husqvarna have gone to more "style/design" which IMHO makes them more complicated to get into for service. Looking pretty hanging on the wall, or sitting on the bench doesn't mean much to me.
I only buy Stihl products. I have several weedeaters that are close to 20 years old and still running fine. Same with chainsaws. I seldom have any problems with any of my Stihl products and when I do it is easy to get any parts and service that I need. A little more expensive, but like anything else in life, you get what you pay for.
Depends where you buy it from and your skill level. Stihl only sold at dealers that will start and adjust run it first. My experience with newer Husqvarna from the box stores is they typically need adjusting out of the box. Fortunately I was able to do that. If you can't I would purchase from a dealer that makes sure it runs!
Just bought this exact trimmer yesterday and am already having this issue. I’m about to try and adjust it but… 1 day old and my 1st Stihl! I’m not impressed yet. 😏
Maruyama trimmers if you can find one hands down the best most reliable very little maintenance needed ever worth every penny built the way things use to be built Japanese perfection also Tanaka is a very good brand solid machines
Thank you for your time in producing and uploading the video. I have the same trimmer with exactly the same issue. Its now fixed thanks to you. Cheers! Edit: I forgot to mention that I subbed to your channel as well. Thanks.
I had the exact same problem with my STIHL trimmer and I just purchased and received my replacement carburetor last night. I didn’t think to adjust the screws (and your runs perfectly). Yet I think I’ll replace it anyway
I’ve had an echo trimmer for 25 years and it’s still going strong but I have a few friends with sthil trimmers and they completely broke after just three years
I owning nothing but Stihl. At 49, I have plenty of time behind saws, trimmers, blowers, edgers. Stihl has always been my go to, I have owned Echos before and yes they are good. From my experience Stihl has always worked out for me. They may cost more, but I would rather have tools last me a lifetime or close to it, then replacing them every season.
I have a Stihl trimmer and it’s always been extremely hard to start once the machine is hot. If I finish the yard in one shot after mowing I’m good. I’ve been told this is very common with Stihl’s
I have a Stihl auger that's always been finicky to start after adding fuel. It's prone to flooding, so the choke is only used when cold and only for a couple pulls
I had an old handlebar Stihl trimmer but it was awkward to use. It was really a brush cutter but I had used Echo and it was really reliable so that's what I got. I wouldn't mind a Stihl but it'd have to be 2nd hand because Echo works just as well. Thanks and Blessings!
@Arsene Lupin III Mine had a carbide table saw blade and was as dangerous as a gun with a hair trigger and an itchy finger in a ivy patch. It wasn't worth much trimming being too awkward but was a terror to clear and underbrush with. Cut stuff 3 and 4 inches through in a blink from the back side. Wind it up and hold on. Never did break the shaft or gears but the Echo convertible was a lot more versatile.
@Arsene Lupin III I don't blame you one bit. If they can't breathe, they can't breathe. I've never had that problem but have had neighbors that have and I've been the maintenance man on others that have so I understand perfectly. My MS440 Magnum saw just had one exhaust outlet. Now it has 2. Anything can be improved upon, don't care what it is. YOU are the one that has to use it and there's no need for any more boat anchors. Gopher it and BLESSINGS 2 U!
@Arsene Lupin III Sounds like the price was right. Mine was 35+ years ago and bought new. Now I gave all my 2-cycle stuff to my son-in-law and we have 2 battery trimmers. They're not nearly as good as the 2-cycles but when you get geezerish you sometimes have to do something different.
Thank you for making and posting this video. Shows me how to adjust the idle speed and low/high mix. (Very clear explanation). Thank you for the explanation of the work you did in this video. God Bless.
i just got an fs91R for 50 bucks.. sold it same day for 250, needed carb adjustment.. also yes i'll buy anything if the price is right.. personally bought into the husqvarna 525 series, L string trimmer then ECS edger... looking into getting the 525 pole hedge trimmer next... professional equipment stihl, echo, husqvarna = worth the money 100% of the time.. new or used
@@HomeGaragechannel hey man im stumped. Been doing this 15 years... Have a bolens b110 string trimmer.. Getting spark, cleaned carb the primer isnt not pressing fuel into the cylinder but even when i prime it with gas and a spray bottle it still wont start.... Any ideas?
I only buy Stihl. I don't have a problem with the other quality brands, it's just what I have always used! Kind of an, if it ain't broke, sort of a thing!
I have a dealer not to far from me so its easy to secure trimmers and if its giving problems i buy parts and repair it myself becuase its usually really expensive
My fix was on the ignition coil at the rubber part at the top of the spark plug there is a black rubber wire that pushes into the backside of it and it must have gotten pulled away far enough for the spark not to travel to it so I pushed it back up the neck at the back and it works 100% the spark needed to connect closer to this spring inside the rubber head
I still Run STIHL. I have an FS 56RC and now a 91R and they have been solid. Just use the top quality fuel and they will last. don't buy gas station crap buy pre mixed ethanol free cans at the hardware stores. My leaf Blower is a Makita backpack though :)
Yes in fact I have this same model and I really like it. The last trimmer I had was a Troy Built and it not worth the money. I rather pay more and get a trimmer that works.
I have a Stihl FS75 and it's driving me crazy. Tried running it without the screen in the muffler and air filter removed. Tried to adjust the carb and it still will not idle. Runs great when you rev it up. Hard to start after it gets hot and heat soaks. Think I'm going to check out a new Echo.
I have a Husky that runs great and I have no issues tuning it. I have a Stihl I got from a friend that only runs on choke. May just need a good cleaning. I need to get it to stay running in order to adjust it. This video was all basic stuff I already, know. Good vid though
I do agree, My spark plug in there now is the original ( 2 years old ) at wide open it seems to have a miss and you can hear it from the exhaust, it also vibrates more. Soon ill make a how to vid on changing the plug.
seems like 9 times out of 10, yes, it's typically the carb. But the problem isn't the carb, its the person who's not taking care of them properly. The problem is most people won't take responsibility for it though.
I have a fifteen year old Husqvarna trimmer, every year I change the spark plug and air filter, on the third pull it always starts. When it'll hit the bucket my next trimmer will be a battery one.
Hi thanks for ur video's I have a fs 45 stihl trimmer where i have spark, petrol, im getting alot of resistance when starting and i have done alot of things to it like Clean spark, clean the exhaust, new caburettor, new coil Now im running out of idea's, im wondering if you have any bright idea's where or what should i do??
@@HomeGaragechannel figures. Got it running right, then picked up some fishing line that's gone into the shaft. God is telling me no more yardwork today. Haha.
I would buy Stihl, brand because Stihl, is the best brand, that they make probably the top number 1 brand for weed whackers, leaf blowers, hedge trimmers, brush cutters, and edgers. I would definitely go with Stihl.
I would like to try & buy a 4 stroke trimmer such as the Honda GX35 powered unit that my father has,Ryobi used to make them but they only seem to make either 2 stroke or electric powered line trimmers now so I don't know what has happened !
Why don't you like the two stroke? They are lighter and more powerful for the cc...no oil change, level check or starvation issues...I would consider a quality battery product if I only needed less than an hour run time...but at the EOD I like 2-cycle small engines best
I used a Stil and felt it was too heavy when compared to the Echos. Also they seem complicated too, there is a reason for them to be popular with pros but I can't seem to buy into it personally. I ended up buying a brand new Echo last week and was blown away between the difference of a new vs an old machine.
Nice video .. I just bought a echo 225 from a yard sale. The owner said he put regular gas with no oil and I bought it for 40 dollars and the trimmer is brand new. My question is can it be fix ? Please help 😂😂😂😂
I love Stihl products. Especially their chainsaws. I think the price point for their trimmers is a little high, but probably worth it for lawn care businesses. What is your opinion on all of the new electric trimmers on the market? I haven’t used one yet.
@@DethBy3ToeSloth well I think they're great but its like electric cars. They have s place but they don't work for everyone. If you have a small yard I say go for it. However if you have a big yard and you have a tendency to let it grow long before you mow i think your going to tax that plastic deck and the battery.
very good eye. Yes i started cleaning some of the equipment because the thumbnail pics look better. I just use an orange based cleaner and a brush to clean with.
@@HomeGaragechannel I just hit mine with a pressure washer every couple weeks during the season...if ppl have a quality straight shaft trimmer don't forget to grease the gearbox (if you haven't done a video on that-perhaps you could!)

50to1is the key pre mix gas is better for your trimmer reduce the ratio of your trimmer if you run 40to1will make your trimmer smoke like crazy it'll do if you don't have anything else to use

Peace and thank you
thank you MarK Johnson.
Thank you.
sure, if you can't adjust the carb, then you must replace it.
Best video yet. You've outdone yourself with how much time you took to video and edit. Thank you.
Thanks man I appreciate your comment
@@HomeGaragechannel Hope your wife knows she has someone awesome.
@@999thenewman lol.. yeah I think she knows
@@HomeGaragechannel Careful now, she reads these comments.
My Stihl edger idles low like this one, but it doesn’t quit by itself. I do like my equipment to idle lower because it consumes less fuel if I need to check something and don’t want to stop the engine
that makes sense.
In my experiences I think stihl trimmers have more torque but I found they also have the most problems, especially with the carb. Echo’s are cheaper but have less power, but they also really reliable and last wayyyy Longer then stihl. That’s just my opinion. Have a good rest of your day
You put that very well. Thanks for the comment
Stihl FS 56 C has been very good on 6 acres fence line for three years with minimal maintenance.
very nice trimmer!
If I was a
Landscaper yah it would make sense to buy a STHL. But as a home owner a MTD (Made To Die) will do just fine.
Lol. Nice
Hahaha
Yup keep making more waste and spending more money
If you are in the US...just buy an Echo SRM-225 from HD...$199 (at least they were before Brandon's inflation!)
I have a UK Stihl FS38 and it's doing the same thing so will have to look at that as it's embarrassing when it keeps cutting out. Big up from Scotland 👍
Good luck, and thank you for the comment Ppp
As a former service mgr/mechanic I found Husqvarnas hard to service (trained on Stihl), Stihl and Echo were easiest, but for quite a while had no dealer in the area (Echo) even though they were based/made about 100 miles from here. Now I'm more inclined to go with Echo as they keep their units more basic. Stihl and Husqvarna have gone to more "style/design" which IMHO makes them more complicated to get into for service. Looking pretty hanging on the wall, or sitting on the bench doesn't mean much to me.
thank you Todd Ostendorf for the great comment.
RIGHT! I agree with you totally. Looks don't cut the grass.
Thank you Barry Henry. I also feel the same way.
I love stihl they are a great company
I 100% agree with you
And just like that, mine just kept running, thank you so much for this video!!!
Glad it helped!
Thank you Mike Buehler
Just bought this exact trimmer yesterday and am already having this issue. I’m about to try and adjust it but… 1 day old and my 1st Stihl! I’m not impressed yet. 😏
I wish you luck with it

thank you Darryl Carpenter I hope so too.
I had the exact same problem with my STIHL trimmer and I just purchased and received my replacement carburetor last night. I didn’t think to adjust the screws (and your runs perfectly). Yet I think I’ll replace it anyway
thank you Tymothi Coffee.
Enjoyed video as I just got done weed eating yard. It doesn't stay running every time so will review video again before working on my Stihl.
good luck to you
We 've use stihl on the job for years, me personally owns a Husqvarna and think it's just as good.
they're good too
I’ve had an echo trimmer for 25 years and it’s still going strong but I have a few friends with sthil trimmers and they completely broke after just three years
thanks for the information
I owning nothing but Stihl. At 49, I have plenty of time behind saws, trimmers, blowers, edgers. Stihl has always been my go to, I have owned Echos before and yes they are good. From my experience Stihl has always worked out for me. They may cost more, but I would rather have tools last me a lifetime or close to it, then replacing them every season.
thank you Kris W.
I have a Stihl trimmer and it’s always been extremely hard to start once the machine is hot. If I finish the yard in one shot after mowing I’m good. I’ve been told this is very common with Stihl’s
really? because It seems like a carb issue to me.
Mine does the same thing. Whenever I have to put fuel into it when hot it won’t start.
I have a Stihl auger that's always been finicky to start after adding fuel. It's prone to flooding, so the choke is only used when cold and only for a couple pulls
thank you for the vid man! I was afraid i was going to have to dig into the carb again but it just needed a small adjustment
Glad I could help and thanks for the comment
Yes i ranned Stihl for 26 years but i didn't have any luck with their 4 mixes problematic,so i stick with Stihl 2 cycles easy to work on
I have to agree, I find their 4 mixes.. a bit temperamental
Thanks mate! I fixed my whipper snipper, back on the job now💪 Cheers mate👊
no problem and thank you for watching
I had an old handlebar Stihl trimmer but it was awkward to use. It was really a brush cutter but I had used Echo and it was really reliable so that's what I got. I wouldn't mind a Stihl but it'd have to be 2nd hand because Echo works just as well. Thanks and Blessings!
it's a real toss up so I'd say just get both
@@HomeGaragechannel There you go!
God Bless.
Glad it helped
i just got an fs91R for 50 bucks.. sold it same day for 250, needed carb adjustment..
also yes i'll buy anything if the price is right..
personally bought into the husqvarna 525 series, L string trimmer then ECS edger... looking into getting the 525 pole hedge trimmer next...

@@LegendMuscle can you get a compression reading for me in the engine? If that's good take the flywheel off and see if the key has sheared.

I have a dealer not to far from me so its easy to secure trimmers and if its giving problems i buy parts and repair it myself becuase its usually really expensive

Thanks! Fixed my trimmer because of this video.

My fix was on the ignition coil at the rubber part at the top of the spark plug there is a black rubber wire that pushes into the backside of it and it must have gotten pulled away far enough for the spark not to travel to it so I pushed it back up the neck at the back and it works 100% the spark needed to connect closer to this spring inside the rubber head
thank you David Vancouver ,for the tip.
@Arsene Lupin III I’ve been happy with all my pieces so far but can admit the design of this spark plug is poor
I still Run STIHL. I have an FS 56RC and now a 91R and they have been solid. Just use the top quality fuel and they will last. don't buy gas station crap buy pre mixed ethanol free cans at the hardware stores.

I have a Stihl FS75 and it's driving me crazy. Tried running it without the screen in the muffler and air filter removed. Tried to adjust the carb and it still will not idle. Runs great when you rev it up. Hard to start after it gets hot and heat soaks. Think I'm going to check out a new Echo.
have you considered replacing the carb?
I have a Husky that runs great and I have no issues tuning it. I have a Stihl I got from a friend that only runs on choke. May just need a good cleaning. I need to get it to stay running in order to adjust it. This video was all basic stuff I already, know. Good vid though

Yeah we had the same weedeater so we had to buy a carburetor rebuild kit and it worked but is a carburetor always the problem
seems like 9 times out of 10, yes, it's typically the carb. But the problem isn't the carb, its the person who's not taking care of them properly. The problem is most people won't take responsibility for it though.
I grew up with with stihl equipment and now at work i keep our 8 year old or older trimmers running

If you didn’t adjust the idle screw, do you think the L screw adjustment alone would have fixed it?
no. if you have to adjust the L screw it will affect the engine idle so they kinda go hand in hand.
Yes i want to ask what kind of fuel do you use do you a gas and oil mix ir the ore mixed stuff you can by at home depot
I mix my own fuel. 89 octane and a non synthetic 2 cycle oil and of course some stabil.
I would like to try & buy a 4 stroke trimmer such as the Honda GX35 powered unit that my father has,Ryobi used to make them but they only seem to make either 2 stroke or electric powered line trimmers now so I don't know what has happened !
You and me both.
Why don't you like the two stroke? They are lighter and more powerful for the cc...no oil change, level check or starvation issues...I would consider a quality battery product if I only needed less than an hour run time...but at the EOD I like 2-cycle small engines best
After fighting to keep every stihl I've ever owned running I prefer my echo it runs better and stays running longer without having to be repaired
nice choice
I have the same trimmer and also my dad he has had his for 5 or 6 years.
nice, it's a really good trimmer to use.
I used a Stil and felt it was too heavy when compared to the Echos. Also they seem complicated too, there is a reason for them to be popular with pros but I can't seem to buy into it personally. I ended up buying a brand new Echo last week and was blown away between the difference of a new vs an old machine.
I absolutely love echo equipment. Thanks for the comment I appreciate it

Yes you need to buy a new piston with rings and a new cylinder and replace them.
Everyone is different i reckon however Stihl are a decent brand etc
They definitely have great resale
I love Stihl products. Especially their chainsaws. I think the price point for their trimmers is a little high, but probably worth it for lawn care businesses. What is your opinion on all of the new electric trimmers on the market? I haven’t used one yet.

@@DethBy3ToeSloth well I think they're great but its like electric cars. They have s place but they don't work for everyone. If you have a small yard I say go for it.
