  • Carburetor Rebuild On Stihl FS38 Grass Trimmer
In this easy to follow video tutorial I show you how to rebuild the Zama carburetor on a Stihl FS38 grass trimmer. Some symptoms that may indicate that your carburetor needs to be rebuilt are that it may bog down when you throttle up, adjusting the carb makes no difference, only runs on full choke, lacks power, very hard to start and possibly many other symptoms.

Easy to follow and thorough step by step tutorials do it yourself (DIY) to help you with your broken lawn and garden equipment including snowblowers.
I do my best to teach you how to easily diagnose problems the fastest, quickest and most efficient way with real repairs beyond just replacing a spark plug. These tips are for both the homeowner and shop owner.
Whether it be a handheld, two stroke, two cycle engine like a chainsaw, weed eater, weed wacker, string trimmer, grass trimmer, line trimmer, hedge trimmer, strimmer, brush cutter, leaf blower, or four stroke, four cycle units like a lawnmower, wood splitter, lawn tractor, snowblower, pressure washer, generator or a ride on mower that needs parts installed or replaced, I’m your go-to guy.
My favorite brands of spark plugs are NGK and Champion and are the ones I recommend.
I’ve been a small engine mechanic for many decades and also run my own repair shop so my videos are loaded with tips and tricks that I have learned and want to share with you. You will also find many tool and product reviews from top brands on my channel as well.

Wanted to say thanks for all of your vid's. I got an old Toro mower a few years ago for free. It ran good, but only on full throttle. It worked, so I didn't worry about it. Last week it started running rough, like it had some dirt in the carb. Thx to your videos, I pulled the Walbro Carb off, checked it out, cleaned it, fixed the low idle return, adj. the mixture, set the idle and she runs like new! Because of you, I'm almost done with my old 3 HP, side exhaust Tecumseh project. Thx Donyboy!!!

Awesome video Donyboy. I"ve rebuilt carbs on 4 cycle engines so I had a pretty good idea on how my Stihl grass trimmer would work. I actually took it off and cleaned it just as you described. However, I forgot to check that fuel filter--which is very important. And. .I didn't clean that valve orifice inside. Normally I use a thin sewing needle to physically clean these out. I've found that physical cleaning is surefire versus carb cleaner which doesn't always break up ethanol gasoline. . another bad idea to use. Live and learn. You've done a fabulous job with your presentation as well as the tone of voice. This couldn't have been any better with a hired actor. Well done ! You're a very good teacher. Love my Stihl.

Still the best carb video. I just found it I had already replaced everything and couldn't get the throttle cable on the carb good and it was running fast at idle to the point that the head was turning only way I could slow it down was to turn the choke on a little. I am going to see if i can roll the throttle around tomorrow and see if i can get it to seat down in it then it would lower the throttle.

Best DIY video I've seen - by far. Thank you for taking such care to make it so professional.
I watched it last week, then checked my FS45 which bogged down when opening the throttle. Didn't rebuild carb. just blew through fuel lines and filter. Put zip ties on fuel lines as the tubing seemed a bit loose.
Result: Like new again, no hesitation on running straight up to full power.
This week, horror! It was back to square one. Terrible bog down, no power. Life is so cruel!

I can't say enough about this video. Easy to follow with no distractions music or kids etc. I bought a Stihl weedeater 1 1/2 years ago and already it won't start. 2 blisters later I am pissed off that a weedeater I thought I would never have any problems with for at lest 5 years or so has already failed me ugh. I'm not sure where to start and I doubt it needs a kit already but who knows for sure. It acts like it is not getting any gas and the primer bulb does feel different when pushing so I will start with the basics inspections to see if anything obvious is wrong then maybe change the plug out, filter and things like that. Anyway thanks for your video and I will be following you from now on.

Thanks for your response Donyboy73. After all my rambling about the piece of crap stihl trimmer I had watched a video on timmer line replacement and didn't realize that you could feed it in from the outside. I tried it out and it worked. I don't know how many choice words I used trying to figure out how to get the line rewound without it all coming apart. My point is on doing so I had pulled the plug wire to check for spark and barely pulled the cord and it started. What the heck I thought so shut it off put the plug wire on good and the protector cover and it ran like a new one. I just figure I had rocked it back and forth enough to unlodge something in the fuel lines so were good now. I will watch your video anyway for more info so thank you very much once again.

One of the best instructional videos on UA-cam, to the point, great camera work, no stupid competing background music. Was wondering if using a spray carb cleaner is of any value. They are pretty weak compared to the carb cleaners 20 years ago so it is necessary to "rod" the passages. I did this on my motorcycle and will now try it on my Stihl trimmer and MS261 chainsaw. Keep up the excellent work.

    Hi there donyboy73,

And this carburettor with that tiny round filter, which to a layman looks like part of the solid bit of the carburettor but you show it isn't. Great video - thanks mate. Have just ordered a couple of kits and will have a go at doing my own when they arrive. Unfortunately our local Still repair shop where I live in Kalgoorlie WA is not worth the effort, otherwise I'd get it done there.

Your video saved my bacon. Trimmer would only run on choke, and not very long. With your help I was able to disassemble and find the problem . . . gas had congealed inside and needle valve was totally clogged. Cleaned that up and it runs just fine! Any suggestions re optimum type of gas? I'm using a lower octane now.

Can I ask a daft question? How does the fuel feed through the carb? Is it just a gravity thing as there's no pump? Very clear video by the way.

    • @donyboy73
      @donyboy73  10 років тому

the pump is built into the carb
