H/H match update and preview of the week ahead: ... Here we go with week 161 of our favorite classic game show (the final week will be 291). These episodes were taped on August 7, 1976 and first aired in late September of 1976. Our three stalwart regulars are all in fine fettle and are joined by: ~~~Semi-regular Joyce Bulifant, back after four weeks away (and in her "proper" seat once again). This will be her 21st week (of 38). Joyce has only played the H/H four times, but she's matched three of them, so she enjoys an incredible 75% accuracy rate. ~~~Scoey Mitchell, back for his eighth week of 12. Scoey last visited in episodes 681-685, and still has never played the head-to-head. ~~~And Debralee Scott, making her Match Game debut. This will be her first week of ten in that fourth seat. (For comparison, both Ann Elder and Mary Ann Mobley also appeared on the show for ten weeks.) Last week Richard played every H/H question save for one (which Fannie successfully matched). But it's not really exaggerating to say that the H/H has become Richard's almost exclusive purview. Reviewing the past 16 weeks, Richard has played 66 times. Everyone else combined played 13 times. (Fannie got 6 opportunities, Brett 5, Betty 1, and Lynn Deerfield 1). Percentage-wise, Richard played 83.5% of the time over those past 16 weeks. His cumulative accuracy score briefly fell below Brett's once again last week, but his match on Friday allowed him to end the week with a slight lead. (His 41.322% vs Her 41.269%.) What's in store for us this week? I keep repeating myself, but I hope Charles is called on to play the H/H again. It's discouraging to see him so ignored. He hasn't been called on since his mega-run of 7 + 2 attempts back in 707-717, so we're looking at nearly 85 episodes with no CNR H/H action! Scoey has been on the panel several weeks now (this is his eighth), and he's never been called on for the H/H match. And we have newcomer Debralee Scott, who, thankfully, isn't another one-and-done panelist. In fact, Debralee will become a notable member of the extended Match Game family with ten weeks of appearances. Will she get her first opportunity at the head-to-head in her debut week? Whatever happens in the H/H this week, I'm sure Match Game will be serving up plenty of _________! ~~~Today's action: (At the tail end of the last program, one champion was defeated after winning $3,450, but there wasn't enough time for the new champion to play the bonus round she'd earned.) Today's audience match question: "Ah ________" (My thoughts: (censored), darn it, poor thing, heck) The celebs: Richard (So), Scoey (Choo), and Charles (Men) -- It's hysterical that when Charles was called on, Brett and Scoey immediately shove cards with suggestions in his direction. It's even more hysterical that he tore one card up and went with his own answer! And to add to the hilarity, his answer was the first one revealed! The choice: Choo The answers: Men, Choo, Ha Our champion picked the best suggestion that was offered, but no one thought of the top response. Now the guessing game. Will she pick Scoey for the H/H? Or is the Richard Dawson mystique simply too powerful to overcome? She chooses Richard. He's matched seven of his 20 most recent attempts (35%). Today's H/H question: "Hi _______ " (My first thought was High Noon, but then Gene spelled the question. Hi Mom? High-tech is often spelled hi-tech today, but was it in 1976? Hi and goodbye? Hi there? All the good answers are "high" like high and dry. I also thought of hi-yo Silver, but that's problematic as most people remember it as Hi-ho Silver. Hydrox cookies don't work either.. I'll just say "hi there" and be glad I'm not on stage. Actually, now that I think about it, I wouldn't mind standing on that stage in 1976 even if it meant not matching today!) Debralee is watching closely as Richard writes his response... Gene asks the contestant for her response and I'm flabbergasted. I gave a valid but seemingly lousy answer in desperation, and the champion gives the same answer! Maybe it wasn't as bad as I thought? The audience sounds less than enthused. "That's a possibility," Gene says charitably. Well, now all eyes on Richard. He says "I was thinking of that drink that Cosby advertises: 'C'" -- Not bad, I think I like it better than my answer, even though I did match the contestant! No match today! (And Richard drops back below Brett on the leader board for the umpteenth time.) ~~~Here's our updated leader board showing the 11 celebs with at least 3 H/H matches, ranked by accuracy: (Note: An asterisk before a celebrity's name signifies that she has "retired" from the show and her H/H stats are now complete.) (Note: For tied scores, I consider the one with the greater number of matches to be higher; if the matches are equal, the celeb who first achieved that score goes on top.) Orson Bean - 100% (4 wins in 4 attempts). Gary Burghoff - 83.3% (5 wins in 6 attempts). TIE: (*)Jo Anne Worley - 75% (3 wins in 4 attempts). TIE: Joyce Bulifant - 75% (3 wins in 4 attempts). Charles - 51.0% (27 wins in 53 attempts). TIE: Betty - 50.0% (18 wins in 36 attempts). TIE: Fannie - 50.0% (13 wins in 26 attempts). Jo Ann Pflug - 44.4% (8 wins in 18 attempts). Brett - 41.3% (26 wins in 63 attempts). Richard - 41.2% (200 wins in 485 attempts). Bert Convy - 33.3% (5 wins in 15 attempts). *These stats include every head-to-head match from episode 1 through 801, excluding the lost/missing/damaged episodes: 31, 32, 33, 311, 312, 313, 324, 325, and 645. (As per MatchGameProductions, these episodes "are nowhere to be found and also aren't in the Goodson/Todman Library. Sadly, looks like they are lost forever!")
One of producer Ira Skutch's most redeeming qualities was this: if there was ever anything questionable or unfair about the resuls of an episode, he would investigate. If he determined something was wrong, he always invited the contestant to return for a second chance.
Always great to have Joyce on the panel; she's such a funny lady.(Joyce and Shirley Jones were both considered for the role of Carol on "The Brady Bunch"!)
( from Wikipedia) Debra Lee Scott's fiancé John Dennis Levi, a police officer with the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, died in the September 11 attacks. In 2005, Scott moved to Florida to live with her sister. Shortly after her arrival, Scott fell into a coma. She soon recovered and was released from the hospital on her birthday. On April 5, 2005, three days after her 52nd birthday and being released from the hospital, she took a nap and apparently died in her sleep. Scott's body was cremated. Her fiancé's mother stated that Scott had a drinking problem that led to her developing cirrhosis, which led to her death. Her sister Jerri said, "She never did get over Dennis' death."
4:13 I love it when Scoey says _"Get the money, Mama"_ and this time he added a _"Baby."_ Even though he gets teased (mainly by Brett, who seems to in truth love him) for not being a great player, he tries his best and he's always rooting for the contestants. And he's funny without demanding a lot of attention.
I knew Bart was going to be back. Two episodes ago, when red-headed Mary was playing against him, she told Gene that she didn't know if she should answer with a general or a specific example, and Fanny yelled out, "General," and Mary won.
At least this time we know why the contestant was called back. For anyone who didn't see the episode where he lost, his opponent Mary had to match one person to beat him. It was Fannie. There was some "table talk" between Mary and Fannie and it won her the game. I'm glad they had Bart back!
In a previous episode, Fannie Flagg let the word, "General" slip out, which gave away the answer. Bart's opponent won the game based on that and this is why thye had to call him back.

I always had such a huge crush on DebraLee Scott.
One of producer Ira Skutch's most redeeming qualities was this: if there was ever anything questionable or unfair about the resuls of an episode, he would investigate. If he determined something was wrong, he always invited the contestant to return for a second chance.
Something I haven't seen the producers of the new show do, even though I've lost count of how many contestants got screwed by the judging.
Absolutely correct - have we seen this anywhere else??
Nice.
The quiz show scandals were still a lingering memory in the 1970s. No producer wanted to risk looking like the game was unfair or rigged in any way.
The one with Fanny was much too obvious. They needed to toss the question ASAP.
I knew it! I knew they'd have to bring Bart back. Fannie's slip of the tongue was what triggered his return.
I think the previous time, Bart asked Gene if the answer should be general or specific. Fannie muttered "general" just before Bart gave his answer.
Always great to have Joyce on the panel; she's such a funny lady.(Joyce and Shirley Jones were both considered for the role of Carol on "The Brady Bunch"!)
