That pedal and a heavy flange at a slow rate = Judas Priest Turbo-era sound. 1987? Sounds about right.
Stoner? Drone? Now you're speaking my language! Didn't expect to hear any of that with a title like this. Also I think this is a David Gilmour favorite, if I'm not mistaken.
I've had one for a few years, it sounds amazing through tube amps and humbuckers.
Such a great pedal! An absolute monster in stereo. Used extensively by Aussie band The Mark of Cain.
That first jam was a delight. Verging into Gilmour at moments, so nice!
Would love to hear your take on bone petals, I love me some time on my baritone. ✌️😌🎸
Great show, as always a perfect blend of info, music and humour.
Thank you!
Weird I was looking for a good video on this the other day, love your channel!
That sounded great! Can’t believe it’s out of print- it’s a really unique sound. Thanks for sharing the sounds you got out of it.
As I understand it the distortion side is analog (I was told it’s based on a DS-2 with the turbo mode engaged- but I’m not a circuit guy, so don’t know if anyone can confirm that) it was on David Gilmours board for a bit. Actually it great if you back off the volume on a strat.
It really shines when used in stereo when it really does ‘fatten’ that sound. I think it’s the coolest looking boss pedal - that red abs black just pops!! Great video !
Happy to see you mention this pedal! I’ve heard that it’s one of Chris Carter’s favorite Boss pedals and I always wanted to learn more about it since then. Thank you! Love your channel
You hit the nail on the head when you used it for down tuned riffs: that's why I have one.
I love Boss distortion pedals and I have most of them from the 80s - 90s.
Great video, thank you! It's a nice pedal to use with the volume at 100% - it has lots of headroom there and goes into the fuzz area and drives beautifully a tube amp.
The Rage by Judas Priest on doubling mode 3
Seems like this would be a perfect single-pedal option for the Killing Joke sound.
You nailed it.
Dear lord, now that's a pedal i never expected to exist!
Darn, I thought it was purple with pink letters and knobs. Now THAT would make it a party pedal...
Power Ballad my garbage can This is a straight up rawkin’ pedal Mostly 80s rock
dude... you can make anything sound good!
This pedal sounds really nice and it's been on my board for quite some time now. Also sounds heavy when boosted by a TS style pedal.
I remember seeing this pedal as a kid in my local music shop and being like Omg I NEEED that pedal. Hahah
I had a spoiled friend whose parents got him one. We took turns playing whatever riffs we knew through it and thinking it was the Pedal Of The Future(tm)
@@StompboxBreakdown Ohh those were the days. Ignorance is (Un)bliss.. or something.
“All I need is this rack mount digital delay, then the gigs will pour in”
I traded one of these that I modded for a DC-2W. I don't regret my decision because the DC-2W is awesome, but I do miss it.
YES!!!!!! All the yes!!
Years later Rainger FX will release the Break Box, which I think takes this merged distortion and modulation concept to a very creative place.
90’s Van Halen tones on a budget for sure.
This pedal sits in a unique place between an OD and a distortion, Rat has been mentioned and that's not wrong but this is better IMO, I never gelled with Rats but this one is big in my book, aside from the digital efx. The efx makes for a quick stereo solution which is not bad. I use to sell these when they came out, they were not cheap. I've got my own now and I love what it does. I think Gilmour also used one for the overdrive.
Stoner metal part was hudge! Thanks for the review )))
Finally!!!
I prefer the MZ-2 over the HM-3 and the MT-2.
The pedal isn't for me, but that kick ass shirt certainly is!
Heck yeah!! What scale you rocking with?
@@StompboxBreakdown XXL for the shirt. Aeolian for the pedal. :)
It say metal, but looks good to play some songs with distortion and chorus, like The Cult or some other bands of pos punk that i remember use chorus and some drive/distortion, can this pedal get waza some day? I will love
Great pedal, without the efx it sits in a great place between OD and Dist, a hidden gem.
Ahh, the forgotten David Gilmour distortion. I've always wanted one but they're getting pricy.
But I've found the Digitech Grunge gets surprisingly close.
A baritone video eh? I've been playing Ibanez 5 string bass and a Warmoth baritone. It's a good pair. I use the same pedal board for both. ...Bass Clone, Nobel's ODR mini, russian Big Muff, Revv G8, a looper , a tuner...
DEAR BOSS PLEASE WAZA THIS METALIZER FOR US OKAY THANKS
...but really Boss, c'mon. Please? PLEASE
I bought the same like 2 years ago, but I don't use it a lot, just cause they tone knob isn't sharp enough, honestly I prefer to use my METAL ZONE and add it chorus or what I need, when I bought it I really had a great expectation, I was thinking on sounds as Slayer's album Show no Mercy or something like that, but as I said, is not enough sharp distortion
Nice! BTW, is it modern PSA powered, or old-school ACA? And I wish you would've tried it out on the bass. Just to hear it.
Thanks! Yeah, it's modern PSA powered. I tried recording bass stuff, but it really came out inaudible and not that interesting. The chorus/doubling might have been interesting by itself, but the distortion really wasn't doing it any favors, and I didn't want people to close the video over it.
@@StompboxBreakdown LOL, I suppose you're right. But us bass-players want to know how crappy it is. Otherwise we may still be tempted to try it. You know how GAS is... 🤣And good it's PSA power.
As always, there is an oddball Yamaha answer to this pedal in the DM-100 except it has a BBD-based modulation section and modes where you can use the modulation without the distortion.
Yamaha? The motorcycle company?!
@@StompboxBreakdown You're probably thinking of the people that make outboard motors for speedboats.
does it clean up with your guitar’s volume?
Yes! That's one of the things i like about it.
Is the basic distortion circuit analog? I feel like I read that somewhere.
Yeah, analog distortion with digital time based stuff
Thanks ! but you forget the big question : is the drive analog or digital ?
The drive is analog. It's only the time based stuff the pedal that is digital. It's a great sounding drive too!
No man, you are not a chugging guy 😢
I dont know where i heard that the dirt is supposed to be a rat style, is that true??
Sounds about right to me
Do DOD Attacker
Sounds like crap and I love it
Didn’t know Boss made that. Probably don’t make them anymore……
I had one of these years ago that I literally found in a garage. If you want a really processed cheesy sound here it is. Sounded horrible in mono.
Sounds horrible, but in an interesting way..... would probably be interesting to use with synthesizers.
In your hands it sounds almost like a Rat. Thanks for using an actual clean tone in front lol
With stereo, this thing was obviously trying to simplify EVH's evolving wet dry wet thing to make is accessible to regular folks
