I often contemplate the blending of phasers and flangers because I'm always wanting more crispness and edge on my phasers and more roundness and warmth on my flangers. This thing smashes them together in a pleasant way. I watched the video and still don't understand what all the knobs do but it is a feat in engineering and marketing or whatever you call the side of the business that is practical and having to justify this ungodly creation. Great video and great fitting pedal for your format- despite it being massive. The foxy mistress will now haunt us forever
You should call your show “Underdog Stompbox Breakdown.” I love the niche you’ve created within the UA-cam universe: coverage of interesting, creative, under-the-radar pedals. Keep up the great work!
I'm glad that this pedal exists as it's a testament to the beautifully bonkers thinking that Mike Matthews allowed to happen. I'm even gladder that it's been given the Stompbox Breakdown treatment. 😊
These large format EH pedals have always reminded me of toasters. A warm metal box to put your bread. From a time when you didn't have a pedalboard. The pedal is its own pedalboard.
I love the nerdiness of your videos and how much you go into depth in order to explain how stuff works! It's also the reason why your channel won't grow too much, as most people don't care. But I absolutely adore it!
Thank you so much, I always enjoy reading your feedback. I hope you're wrong about it not growing too much, but I'd rather be earnest and speak from a place of real interest than be one of those "OMG YOU GOTTA SEE THIS" people who have to force themselves to get excited about every pedal that shows up on their doorstep.
@@StompboxBreakdown I just want to encourage you to keep going because I genuinely enjoy learning about how pedals work (even if I haven't bought one in almost 18 months!). My podcast is somewhat similar: so geeky that most people don't care to listen to it. But I'm fine, because the listeners are of very high quality and much smarter. The funny thing is that the quality of your content attracts the kind of audience that enjoys it. You think you want to be big and popular until you discover what kind of people lurk in the comment section of these "OMG YOU GOTTA SEE THIS" videos. Kudos to them for being able to handle this, but most of the times popularity also entails a degree of mediocrity. Excellence and genuine passion are super underrated.
As always, your videos are a perfect blend of informative while being entertaining and humorous. But dude you made me belly laugh many times in this one. Great video and as always great content!
I wanted one of these so bad when they first came out! In hindsight, it's probably a good thing I didn't get one - I think I would have driven myself and anyone I was playing with at the time insane with it. This is easily the best demo I've ever seen of this pedal though. Thanks for clearing up some mysteries for us!
Looks and sounds awesome. I want one of those Fulltone ChoralFlange pedals to go with my wonderful Jam Pedals Ripply Fall. That way I'd have Flanger, Phaser, and two different flavours of Chorus in two pedals.
Wow! What a weird beastie! And it's all analog! No wonder they had to stop making it. I'd consider finding one, but it would turn my pedalboard into a war zone! Very strange sounds indeed. Thanks!
there was an user by the name tube or tubes in the ehx forums that I think designed this pedal, and did design the tube pedals. there were even pictures of prototypes. It was wild. Look it up even if you have to use the wayback machine to retrieve those old posts
Just an FYI since you had the back off, you can easily mod this to run on 9V DC as despite the 18v adaptor, the circuit runs on 9v (and less) onboard actually. Up front there is a 9v regulator which you can bypass sensibly....
I did a studio recording with one of these and ended a take by throwing the feedback knob all the way up and it clipped the DI channel to a flat rectangle and the engineer told me it was the loudest thing he'd ever recorded.
What was wrong about this pedal is the inconsistent colouring and the labelling of the knobs and function and more LFO would be useful tho. Got one, love it!
I was not aware of anything like this out there, but yeah - How very "Electro Harmonix" of them to do this. The labeling on the inside and unpopulated spots on the board deserve some sleuthing. I'm more interested in that bit of the story than anything else about this pedal.
I've always thought ehx stuff sounded better than boss. Boss pedals are kinda idiot proof.. Ehx has character.. And not just because the boxes look far cooler. I got a rusty fuzz for $35 and every fuzz I try .. Wouldn't win in a shoot out. Shout out to earthquaker for making super cool stuff I wish I could afford.

🤙🏻👍🏻👊🏻
There’s no one that explains pedals in the depth that you do.
I really enjoy you explaining them from a technical point.
Thank you so much, it’s my pleasure
What a beauty! I had one of these taking up a full quarter of my pedalboard in college.
Worth it!!

need to get mine out the EHX cupboard I have (over 25 old big box pedals) and see if I can replicate some of your settings. Sounds rad :)
Thank you for a great breakdown of this complex pedal. Particularly helpful advice on checking your house power panel before purchase! ;)
I like to be thorough :)
I Iove your shirt! And this episode
Thank you! It's one of the silliest shirts I own, it gets a lot of double takes.

Glad to put it in your radar
Brilliant! I had no idea.... learned allot. Thank you!
I just got one a couple weeks ago! This thing is such a sleeper!

Oh interesting! I noticed the board said 100mA, despite the housing saying 500mA. I wonder what the original plans were for this thing.
@@StompboxBreakdown yeah the Belling manufactured BBD devices wont run on more than 12v anyway.
That thing is almost TOO much pedal, lol. Thanks for making and sharing!
Absolutely. I don't think they expected it to really take off or anything, just a "what if" kinda pedal.
I did a studio recording with one of these and ended a take by throwing the feedback knob all the way up and it clipped the DI channel to a flat rectangle and the engineer told me it was the loudest thing he'd ever recorded.
Hahahahaha that’s awesome
I love EHX pedals I have a Pulsar, Soul Food, Holy Grail Plus (discontinued), Neo Clone, Nano Muff and a Nano 360.
Mod this thing for a couple expression pedals... Ohhhweeee!!!!
what a fine swoosh
It ought to have a Nike logo on it

7:53 um…. Yeah 🛸
We do need the lovechild of the Flanger hoax and the Wiggler.....
i was thinking about selling this thing but now i have second thoughts
Aaaa finally the elephant in the room.
Wow, you've got a course on EHX Mainframe Assembly? Sign me up, I'm interested in assembling my own bitcrushers.
Haha, I'm sure there's some overlap between the pedal and the platform
Phlanger or Flaser?🤔
Definitely Phlanger

Oh shit my old nemesis the flanger hoax I just couldn't get anything i wanted from it
Imagine if ehx had added an envelope control too.
No one man should have all that power
