    One thing you should have pointed out, there's a lot of what was the time, innovative versatility, because they used an actual Pen and Paper RPG system as the base and wanted to have it feel the same. So for example, that first door you picked. You didn't have to pick it. If you only had a character with safe cracking, they could also use it to open the door, just not as easily. A strong character could have used strength to break it down. A slightly weaker character could have used a crowbar, or sledgehammer, to bust it open. Explosives such as TNT, Plastic Explosive, or even grenades could be used to blow it open. You could even use the various portable rocket launchers to blast it to smithereens. And finally, the most overpowered stat in the game, Luck, could often be used to luckily stumble on things (though I think that door you couldn't luck open, but I know there are several safes that it will work on because you just guess right on the combination).
    Sometimes even high perception would work, as you might, say, find a key under a doormat (I think that's in the game somewhere). Also, the game checks perception if there is anything near you every time you move, but it is not as good as the full 'Use perception' skill. So a 3-4 perception character might notice the cave without needing to look. You also gain exp that isn't displayed for automatic or even used abilities. If Angela Deth picks the lock, she gets a bit of exp for it.
    The match is usable down there in the cave, but I forget where, I think it might be right where you came in? It lets you see the dog at a distance, and changes the name of the dog to something else, and makes the fight slightly easier. Note that hydrophobia is a classic sign of rabies, btw. Thus the note.
    A few other things: Canteens for each character are absolutely necessary for travel in the heavier desert, otherwise you take damage every step. If you wander around at night there is an actual game effect: You can see the glow of radiation at a distance, thus avoid it. And skills can be improved through use as well as spending skill points, which you earn by raising your intelligence. Walking back and forth in the water will give you a chance to improve your swim skill. There are slippery sand dunes that improve acrobatics. Etc.
    The hint about the man older than the wasteland is about the equivalent of Mama Murphy giving a cryptic clue about Kellogg. It won't help until significantly later.
    One interesting thing that carries over kind of into Fallout is that the NPC's you hire are not fully under your control. You hire one with a cool gun, they might refuse to hand it to another character, unless they've already been given a better one. They can also do things in combat you would not normally do, against large, potentially dangerous enemies they might fire all the ammo in their weapon when you are trying to carefully whittle it down with 3 shot bursts from everyone as it approaches. Or instead of attacking, they may move on their own. Oh! The best thing about splitting the party members off is they could be split way off, let's say you got 3 rad suits and wanted to cross a radiation zone, you could literally drop two people off in Highpool and take the other three across the map. Though it will swap to the other party in combat and make you Evade them, which is annoying.

Being a D&D player in my youth games such as The Bard's Tale and the old Forgotten Realms early computer games were the spiritual successor to table top games. Even though the graphics couldn't match our imaginations it was nice to have a computer to do the rolling and keep check on all the maths. It wasn't until much later that the graphics started to become better and the dice rolling become even more 'in the background'. Even though I never played this, I think I would have enjoyed it.

      @mudcrab3420 4 роки тому +1

      From memory the Mauser C/96 used a stripper clip back in the day. Rifles like the Lee-Enfield also used a stripper clip (and by stripper clip we mean that the bullets are held together in a clip outside of the gun and the clip is used as a tool to assist rapid reloading) and the M1 rifle the US used in WW2 a 8 round clip that actually went into the weapon (and was ejected at the end - bang bang bang bang bang bang bang bang ping!).
      I guess the term 'clip' became 'American English' for what the rest of the world started calling magazines, because clips and magazines are technically different things.

And I'm sure that ending your "rebuttal" with the only phrase more childish than "Checkmate atheists!" would make you great at parties if you were ever invited to one.
      The fact of the matter is that among first world countries, US citizens spend more per capita than anywhere else and they get less bang for their buck. We have a lower life expectancy at birth despite spending more than any of the places you mentioned. Corporate healthcare is bad for citizens because the corporation is going to do what is best for the corporation. The poor in this country actively avoid going to the hospital because they know they could be paying for it years down the line. Drug prices have skyrocketed over the past decades, partly because of a trend where a pharmaceutical company will buy up a failing company, completely gut their R&D sector, raise the price by a factor of three, and turn around to their investors and say, "Hey, look how much more money we're making! Clearly that's because we're good at business and not because we're demanding $2000 a month for a drug that certain people need to survive!" for the investors to lap it up and let them keep doing it.

    Also +1 for an Arcanum playthrough Incidently it also had an amazing game manual- better than some DnD supplements.

    So are we getting a full playthrough of it? It definitely sounds like it would be one hell of a grind of endless deaths but it would be damn interesting if not from the game play but definitely fun to see where everything came from. I know, I'm sorry I know the playthrough comments are a pain, but I'm also curious how many people are interested.

    References to the manual were a subtle form of copy protection as well as saving the KB's. Back in the day, it was easier to COPY DAT FLOPPY than it was to photocopy the entire manual. I remember an old Strategy game called Empire required the player to periodically to enter line x from page y to continue playing. These paragraphs probably served the same purpose.

    At this point its not retro, its ancient. Retro now is Mario 64 or NFL Blitz, getting a bit...antiquated now are we. You apparently have never played any old games based on text. Like Zork or the likes. Typing commands was confusing since it had a set registered amount of commands. But there is a reason why it didn't last and its not because people didn't get it, it's because graphics and tech updated enough for MS DOS to load the graphics card and play the game at the same time or something like that.

Also Jon if you're reading this, let it be known that Wasteland 2 plays superbly on a controller. Got it for £5 on Xbox really not expecting much and was blown away how well it had been ported over plus the game is bloody amazing which helps.

    Yeah I'm old enough to having played this game (C64 version), though I was a teenager. I got stuck on the Scorpitron and couldn't get passed it, so never finished it. I actually have the game again since it came with Wasteland 2 (which I did finish), just hard to get myself into it. The save system is very unforgiving.
