My problem with buying a former luxury car, is usually the repairs are luxury priced as well.
Only if you are not capable
@@macbook802 nope I’m not capable.
True. As they often say, if you can't afford it new, you can't afford it used either.
@@macbook802 still going to cost a lot more to fix then a Toyota or Honda...
@@polska905 you're assuming, when you assume it makes an....
As soon as I saw the Maserati I figured it had to be a Quattroporte to make it in this video. The maintenance on those things is insane. 10K car quickly becomes 30K
If you are a DIY owner maintenance is simple and cheap. If you need to pay someone to do maintenance dont buy it. The only expensive item is brake components. Repairs are simple but original parts are expensive. Get the best example with good record and use them. The more use the better they behave, they need to be driven constantly.
@@jobselebron5835 simple and cheap... C'mon.
@@jobselebron5835 A lot of these newer luxury cars require incredibly expensive computers to reset things after maintenance. They are not DIY friendly at all. They're engineering high end cars more and more to require dealer-only maintenance.
We have a 13” Quattroporte (4.7) for 2 years and it’s been terrific. What’s true is the parts are expensive. What you’d think is $50 is $500. The plug and play automatic transmission selector that shows PRND got delaminated and was $635! But popped it in myself easily. We got ours with a warranty and only 1 thing went wrong some thing behind the speedometer that was making a slight whirring noise. It was $1,900 plus $800 to install at the Maserati dealership. Covered by our Warranty though. Oil changes there are $485 covered again by warranty. Otherwise I’d do it myself. That’s it. It’s fast it’s got 485 Hp so same as a 22” Dodge Challenger 392 Scatpack and does the same top speed at 180 mph. Plenty of space and it’s super comfortable with leather everywhere inside. The steering is alive and great and it’s basically got a Ferrari F430 engine. Plus you get the rest of the car thrown in for free cost wise today in 22’ think of it like that and it’s really a bargain. Life is too short to drive a boring car like a new Toyota or Honda.
@@palebeachbum haha so a new $35,000 Camry doesn’t ? I sat in one recently an Uber driver had one in a state I was visiting. I thought oh looks decent. About a block down the road I said Jesus I’d never buy one of these. The back seat on that “ luxurious” up level model was terribly uncomfortable. I was seriously thinking about getting out and calling someone else but it was dark and late so stayed put. Thank goddess I spent the same and went for a 13’ Maserati Quattroporte instead. 🇮🇹
That Maserati engine is beautiful. I was involved with the development of the nylon intake manifold. I have one in my shop. It is the highlight of the garage art.
Ooh do tell more Charles!! Was the intake farmed out to a subcontractor experienced with weaving that nylon? I’d love to hear more of course 😊
The part was injection molded as all nylon intake manifolds. This was a multi piece part as is the most common process. Normally they would be vibration welded together. But that requires another set of tooling for welding fixtures and the vibration welders. Great for a 200,000 to 1,000,000 part per year run. Much tougher to afford for a 500 unit a year vehicle. So we helped develop an adhesive bonding process that fit with the small production run. It cost more per part but it eliminated all the tooling and equipment costs. It worked better than a typical welded intake manifold and we never had a warrantee claim.@@chrisdooley1184
Keep smellin those Maserati farts there buddy
I bought a 2005 S class Mercedes with 40,000 miles, 5 years ago. One or two little issues that I corrected, and it’s bulletproof since. I do all the maintenance and fluid changes. It’s my second W220, I put over 150K on my first one. You just have to purchase the right car and maintain it.
Do you need a lift to maintain them?
I thought that Maserati was a buick century for a second there
I bet you Someone at the auction put the Maserati in the ice slow mode to make other drivers think there is something wrong so they can buy it cheaper.
Plot twist...that person was you 😂
@@ovoxo2220 I wish. That would have been epic. Too bad it sold below reserve.
This series is So. Much. Fun! I'm thinking that the CC was the best buy of the day!
This is my favorite segment from the TFL productions.
“Secret stash of what?” 😎 “Okay!”
😂😂😂
All of these become money pits the second something breaks on them. Repair costs do not depreciate in fact they become more expensive as parts become rare.
This is a great series. Auctions are so much fun. Thanks guys
They can definitely pump out a lot of content on a budget. Loving the series
Well car companies aren't giving test drives to amateur UA-cam channels anymore.
As usual great job. None of these were interesting to me, but that’s alright. One of my brother-in-laws bought one of those VW’s for gas savings, the transmission went out was going to cost more than what he paid for the car, he sold as is, lost money & said that he’ll never make that mistake again. ❤what y’all are doing keep’m coming
I really like this episode and the diversity of cars that you picked I figured the mazarati would go low I wish I would've got a final on that nice car ! Merry Christmas to all at TFL cars great year great job looking forward to 23 for more content.
One thing I can say for the Maserati is it's very rememberable from top gear when they tested it against the ugly vw and fantastic looking ford.
I used to have a 09 passat CC but it was the full spec 3.6L VR6 N/A with 4 motion and everything inside also, rear cam that hid behind the VW badge, HDD Navigation, power rear sun shade, adaptive headlights...the list was big...great car and looks awesome even now...i lost it in a car accident but i loved it...the 3.6 VR6 had a great launch and sounded awesome.
These are your best series since you guys got the Touareg. 👍🏼👍🏼
Love this series! Keep them coming!
I’ve owned an 08 335i and they are awesome if u can maintain them. a lot of maintenance requires engine out services on them
Nice surprise seeing the CC plopped in there. I daily a tuned 2012 R-line that is nearing 200k miles that has been pretty darn reliable.
Man I love these series... please keep making these buy or bust videos!!
The VW CC is a cunning way to reduce rear passenger headroom and make it harder to get in and out of the rear seat
They do look beautiful though, don't they?
I have a b7 passat tdi and i love it . I wish VW added that interior to the tdi passat . But im getting a cc they look badass
The laughing makes the video amazing for me. Thanks guys love you both. Best broship ever
Maserati, if you buy it your buried in it due to maintenance cost. BMW. I think that is the era of warping plastic intake manifold. VW CC. I drove one of those with a stick. At 20mph in 2nd I floored it and in
Absolutely love this series!
Not a BMW fan but that was a good deal. although Im sure things will start breaking fast on it, then you're in trouble. I love this series!
I had the 335 and it ate high pressure fuel pumps.
Old plastic parts melting and falling off because they run so hot. Dont get me started on having to unlock the menu with a single lever and a number of paths to take just to get to the engine temp. @@aussie2uGA
Love this series guys!
A fantastically, just fantastic video.
I recently bought an 2007 LS460 with the mark levinston sound system. Super cheap for what it is. Drives like a cloud. Gets 23mpg at 100 miles an hour (on a closed course with a professional driver). I can drive to Portland from Seattle and back again and still have more than a quarter tank left.
I've had two 430s. They will always have a special place in my heart
And a 460 is better than any of these cars shown! Will last forever and is a great car
Loving buy or bust. Nice work guys
The Maserati was the only one to have forget the other to piles of garbage not worth the paper they were drawn on
First thing i would do with that Maserati is get that wood refinished. Never liked gloss finish. Makes wood look like plastic
Dang the premium gas bill alone on the Maserati would brake the bank on a road trip. 11 mpg city, 16 highway, premium required!
Thank you guys,
Love theses video's. Keep them coming
Ive had my e92 335i for 4 years now got it at 115k now im at 172k ive done all the major and low maintenance items myself because im a euro mechanic and i do that stuff for a living but i love the car. Im probably never going to sell it and i can’t wait too get another 200k
Great videos..keep it up
I like these episodes, keep em up!
I wouldn’t touch any of these cars for the 10 foot pole…. Especially the Masarrati and the Beamer.
Love this series
I get this. I regret selling my Toyota fj. Not many cars I would buy twice but I get it for special ones.
Love these aution videos!!
Yeah I bought a 2007 BMW 760li for $5k with 93k miles on the V12, fully loaded too. $120k car when new. Depreciation is a bitch! Lol
I‘d love to see that old Intrepid there in one of your future videos!
They don't really exist, they never made it to 100k
I was looking at some diesel Mercedes when I was making lots of long distance trips but could never convince myself to pull the trigger.
This is my new favorite show!
Masseratis are maintenance nightmares. Fastest depreciating cars on the market, not surprised at the price at all.
I'd have given 13k (starting bid..) for that Quattroporte ALL day long. That ZF6 speed auto is the same one basically used in all Euro 6 speed auto installations with minor differences across makes and is a solid trans. I in fact, have one in my LR3. The only real weak point on those cars was the original Duo-Select gearbox tbh. Everything else was minor, though sometimes annoying (electric window hold clips breaking etc..) The ZF Auto cars had a wet sump vs the Duo Select's dry sump V8, meaning more conventional services as well. Not the worst car to spend 13k on!
i found a 2007 Quattroporte in CSprings Ford dealer for 17k with 27k miles. mental.
I know they are nightmare if they break, and they do break, but I have ALWAYS wanted a Maserati.
I test drove a VW CC about 10 years ago..with a manual transmission and really enjoyed it. I wasn't ready to make a car change at that point but I it drove well and would have been a worthwhile purchase and a decent value for the money.
You must have test drove a brand new one. By 10k miles those things were complete garbage. I guess the same can be said for most VAG products.
I throw up a little bit when I see them
The Maserati may cost 10-15k, but you have to pay Ferrari level prices on parts & labor. So what should be a minor repair can cost several thousands
that cc is a nice car, and they drive very smooth but they have a terribly unreliable dual clutch automatic transmission that is ungodly expensive to repair/replace. def go for the six speed manual or forget about it.
Its gonna be cheaper to LS swap that Maserati than the nightmare maintenance costs
Engines are not their problem. The engine swap is way more expensive. You buy this cars for their engine.
That VW engine had the timing guide problems and would just fail at moments notice
I luv the Maserati, but would be terrified outside of warranty. Owned a BMW 5-speed 328i for two years and would never own a BMW out of warranty . To finish out the trifecta, no way I'd ever buy a VW out of warranty.
That VW was beautiful and the BMW was a great buy for that acceleration!
The Maserati has a mandatory service due to keep the warranty at 50k miles that runs about 12k pounds in the UK. Not sure what it might cost in the USA....
Thank you, Tommy and Brendon, IMHO used European luxury - over 50k and out of warranty = RUN. Japanese luxury (mostly Lexus) BUY, unsure about Infinity (Nissan the Chrysler of Japan).
HINT - Find a JDM Toyota Crown or Century - they dump before 100k, and BUY
Infinity made amps & speakers. 2003 to 2013 Infinitis, for the most part, are tanks. I'm on my 2nd G, had a first gen from 2010 to 2016 and this second gen, final year G37xS since 2016. Never a single major repair, biggest scare was a rad going out due to salt corroding the bottom fittings. (Canadian Winters) ...just about 300,000 km driven without issues between the two of them.
Lol Infinitis aren’t as bad but most are dogged and driven hard. The genre of People Who Dr., Lexus are completely different than Infiniti drivers.
Infinitis are solid. They don't have the cvts Nissan has. Just make sure you don't get one with a bunch of owners as they usually end up in the hood somewhere.
I'd love to see a 2nd gen Solara in a video. It isn't a luxury vehicle, but it was a fantastic car.
I agree with Brendan. The E46 was never bettered, even the 318i was a beautiful car. The E46 328i was smooth, powerful and comfortable. Gorgeous.
Never ever liked the E90, contemporary Fords and VWs looked better.
I'm lovin that VW though.
That maserati is one of my dream cars
Oh geeze, walk away now! lol I had an earlier Maserati and they look so good for a reason - they never stay running. I spent tons on the car and prayed it would act right during it's sale. Never been so excited to see a car leave my driveway.
You guys should have inquired about the Maserati’s reserve price and bought that thing yourselves!
You can justify buying the Maserati if it has the ZF but if it has the duo select RUN
I bought a 2012 CC new with a 6 speed. Absolutely loved that car, but I felt like mine was a bit of a lemon. I had a lot of issues. But, I'm starting to debate buying another one just for fun
Ha!! I had a '09 Passat 2.0T with the nav and sunroof and Bluetooth for music and just adored it. Engine burned up though at 132k miles. I loved that car to pieces and don't know what happened. I'd buy another but lower mileage and absolutely no known issues or misfires or oil consumption of any kind.
This Maseratti was my dream car back in the time
I miss my CC VR6 4 MOTION... Great car but needed to go to a SUV...
That turbo? Those turbos!!!!
I bought a $75K BMW once for $3,500. And it was in nice shape with 92K miles, accident free.
Worst Car Buy Ever! In one year I fixed , window motor, washer pump, power seat, rear spring (broke), rear struts, sensors, oil leak, tires, $120 oil changes, nothing was cheap, still needed some work. I sold it at a loss just to stop the money bleeding.
Bought a Dodge Charger for $15K, put struts and a battery in it over five years. Much better deal.
If it wasn't for the repair costs of the Maserati making the Corvette's look like the cost for a Volkswagon Beetle, I'd be in for that one. It certainly looks well cared for.
BMW's first mass produced inline 6? Uhmm, don't think so guys. First twin turbo inline 6 maybe.
Yea! I misspoke, exactly right
@@TFLclassics keep em coming though, love it!
These cars were NOT 100k new lol
Ha, that Maserati was for sale on our lot! Lot of lookers…. No takers!
A sedan with four buckets is an improvement over a 5 seater with a rear bench seat!
You see kids, when we older people were kids, phones had things called _cords_ .
What do you think about Infiniti G 35 exes and BMW 528IX
You driving an 07-08 G35x with the HR? Solid car. Same chassis as my daily '13 G, same motor as my '07 roadster.
5:03 limp home drive mode lol. Selectable lol
High mileage non-Toyota/Honda products don't seem to be selling for much now. "May be" good buys if in decent shape and don't take too much maintenance. The Maserti with a Ferrari engine would probably be way too expensive to maintain.
Maserati costs a bunch to own but I would have bought that for 9k. Maybe I'm an idiot, lol
The Maserati is a driveway decoration. A 100k car will cost 100k car maintenance even if you get it for free
They are not, actually on that big luxury car segment are the best drivers cars available. They look awesome on the driveway and they will not cost $100,000 to maintain.
How about a Jaguar XJR?
I want that 335 so bad
That BMW was a little too early for BMW to be turboing everything. The generation afterward is where that happened. And it is enough of an improvement that I would much rather have the generation after this.
The generation after this had far worse handling. These drive great.
ZFs are generally good transmissions.
Uh, guys... There are REASONS the Q'portes are so cheap - maintenance/servicing/reliability. Modest estimates will tell you $3000/year, but an honest dealer will tell you that can double with mileage, and god help you if some of those neat electric/electronic gubbins start to go south. Plus the cost of insurance and gas...
Any digital Bimmer with 160K on the clock is going to start to trash your bank account in short order, although not in the Maser's class. BUT, for $4k it might be a consideration...except, most auction buyers have a pretty good feel for market value. It would be hard to sell off your lot with that kind of mileage on it.
Dunno about the VW, but at least it should not require a second mortgage to finance the maintenance. Plus, that particular car seemed quite clean and the mileage wasn't a detriment. A good buy at $7K - there is money to be made there.
Repeat after me, "There are NO bargain exotics or high-end luxury cars!!". Does the word "bankruptcy" mean anything to you?
Imagine putting an alternator on a Maserati? That's has to cost 3g's right
When they refreshed the CC they added the 5th seat
Where's the 325i e30? Is is still alive or sold?
i have a e90 diesel about 400hp 600tq 40mpg great dd
They came with around 140hp
@needabettername in the States, all we received were the 335d. Stock 280hp 420tq ish

"Money Pits"
Oh yes, buying a cheap used foreign made luxury car sounds like great idea.
Until you have to pony up 1,500.00 bucks to do the brakes.
"No thanks"
I got sweet deal on Audi A4 once.
I got the oil, and spark plugs changed.
It was over 500 bucks, and yes I sold it shortly there after.
I own only Volvo 240's now
My daily has over 600,000 miles on the clock, and I can change my oil and plugs myself for less than 50.
I have literally changed the timing belt on the side of the road.
the underlying theme with all these cars were that they were early-mid 2000s European cars that are hediously unreliable and stupidly expensive to run and maintain.
Fore/aft power adjustable rear seats. That epitomizes why I would never touch a Maserati (or similar)--needless unreliable technology, simply for technology's sake. On a side note, I admit the interior looks really nice even today, but at the risk of offending Johnny Sac, I've always thought the exterior styling of the quatroporte (and almost every other modern Maserati) was awful.
Shows you the mark up on used cars
No t surprising result for Maserati. Notoriously unreliable. You couldn’t give me one.
Maseratis are everywhere in South Florida, and have become a symbol of “hood rich.” Beautiful cars, but likely poorly maintained, once past the original owners.
My friend bought one of those really cheap that they never shifted right
do you shoot 2 different "you took me on this ones" in advance of the auction? do you send the losing team's roll to developing countries?
HAVE A GOOD DAY EVERYONE ✌️
dam wonder what the reserve was for the maserati, for 15 grand it would have been a steal
I bought a 2009 e90 3 series back in 2014 for £3300
