Guys! With the 3000GT, you are testing a 25 year old car, based on a 32 year old design. Technically an antique! It's bound to have some wear such as the sloppy shifter. I agree the base model was just for the looks. I had a 91 VR-4 and then a 95 VR-4 both fantastic state of the art, reasonably reliable and quality cars for the time. Plus the VR-4 was an incredible performance bargain, especially the 91. All the performance of an NSX at 1/2 the price. Add to that the all season capability with the AWD. PS it was 2+ years ahead of the Mark 4 Supra. Although the Supra did eclipse the performance by a bit and was much bigger in the aftermarket, I still went for the 95 VR-4 at the time.
Sometimes they forget this are old
cars, most cars don't last 10 years without turning into a rust bucket or scrap, Mitsubishi back then bad good build quality regarding longevity, just didn't have the fit and finish of other brands
VR4. State of the art yes. Very fast yes. Replaced the motor twice...also yes. STILL MISS IT THOUGH.
Does anyone remember the 3000 GT VR-4 Spyder? It had a mechanical retracting hardtop. I remember seeing it at a Chicago Auto Show and it was amazing!
@@conroypawgmail the Spyder was really cool. But it added weight, complexity, and $$$ to the car. Interesting how it was gen 2 of folding hardtops. Late 50s Ford & early 60s TBird, then the Spyder, and then the Z4, BMW 3 series and other cars of the early 2010’s made it popular for a while.
That 3000gt wasn’t cheap back in the 90’s. My friends dad had one, it was $40k for the SL in 1997.
@@googleaccount2637 I agree with you on that one. My favorite was the 98-02, honestly I’m actually looking to buy one soon.
3000gt was better looking compared to most everyday cars back then but $40k worth? No way. Total ripoff. 🤣
$40K for an engine that was impossible to self service and a transmission that was known to grenade. It wasn't the best car Mitsubishi made.
If the Aveo had a Mini badge Tommy would be in love. LOL
But the Aveo was a turd I agree with Tommy but I mean I’d drive one in hatch I love cheap turds but buy an old Corolla I think
This didn't look like an Eclipse at the time. The Eclipse that looked like the 3000GT was produced AFTER the GT ended.
And that Eclipse was horrible to look at compared to the previous generation. No turbo or all-wheel-drive and that plastic body cladding made it a huge downgrade.
Yeah like the 01 models that didn’t sell well I always thought those where ugly
Thats not true they were both sold together the second gen eclipses is based on the gto styling not the third
That car was amazing along with the Dodge Stealth. I can't believe that guy doesn't like it. Especially being a car guy like he is. One of his enemies must of had one or something.
Yeah, what do you expect for a vehicle that's 20+ years old? It's not going to be in rock solid condition.
They didn't exactly pick a gem example of an SL either. Although you gotta respect how well the whole car held up cosmetically. They didn't rust
He prefers an Aveo to a 3000GT, he thinks it is a DSM, he thinks an interior features from 91 was inspired by a movie made roughly 10 years later, he chooses to whine about rattling shifter. Does this guy have the credibility to critique anything? (Also, recommending someone drive in an Aveo for speeding may not be the wisest choice from a safety perspective. Beyond the fact that speeding is illegal).
watching you guys try so hard to not say "shitbox" when talking about the Aveo was hilarious.
He got bullied in high school by a guy that had one, thats why he is so emotional about it.
I think you nailed it. Someone with one of those cars did him wrong…goes way deeper than the car itself lol
I`ve owned early 3000GT VR4 few years ago. It was a fast, cool looking car and because it was rare it also turned heads. Base models are not that great though, but should be a decent grand touring machine.
That 3000 GT is older than the 1st Fast & Furious movie. Not sure how the three pods were influenced by a movie that hadn't been made yet. It's interior build quality is pretty spot on with most manufacturers from the 90's.
I disagree with the build quality. Have you ever been in a 90s car? I own a 1997 toyota camry and it has much better build quality. My dad also has a 2000 ford escort (same as the 90s ones) and the build quality is also much better. I don't think the specific example in the video was treated well and thats why its a little rough.
the 3000gt is a sweet car, back in the day 200 something horsepower was something even in the base model.
My Iroc-z had the 305 V8 215-220hp and the Mustang V8 5.0 had 225-230. 200hp non turbo v6 was nothing to sneeze at.
"back in the day" cars in the 60s were putting out 300+ HP and 500+ torque out of big blocks... 200 was NOTHING. Get educated
@@bldontmatter5319 a BMW E36 325i of the early 90s had 192 HP. With a manual and LSD performance was okay. 200 HP in a 3L V6 wasn't too bad for the time.
I'll stand behind the longevity of the Aveos. My ex mother in law had one for quite awhile with no issues. When she passed her son started driving it and it's still on the road today. BTW, It is a four door sedan with an automatic. Happy New Year!
With the 3000gt the looks are not the issue, repair costs are the issue and they can be a nightmare to work on. They look awesome. American 90s cars had terrible plastics too
Two kids reviewing cars older than they are 😊. Brendan, the 3000GT was a bad ass car back in the day. The Japanese triplets were all highly desirable and the vast majority were the base models. Their top trim turbo models were crazy expensive and very rare in real life. Of the 3 the 3000GT was the most comfortable as a daily driver and a great highway touring car.
but to his Point the bare bones SL NOT the GT with 320HP Twin Turbo V6 AWD 6 spd ~ SO the BARE BONES did Suck A$$ as much as bare bones 4 banger mustang from the same era. ~ He did not say the GT sucked.
Back in the day people didn't know that the base 3000gt would be crap. Now we do.
Eliott thinks ALL cars from that era were bad because they didn’t make enough power.. be less like him
Mitsubishi is knocked for reliability quite often but I think it is undeserved. Some of their cars are junkers, but overall I think they make quality. My 2002 Mitsubishi is less than 300 miles away from 250k miles and shifts like day one. The engine is still in great shape too. It has needed some work as it aged, but it is cheap and easy to repair and has overall been a very dependable car.
That leaf would make a nice air conditioned, rain proof golf cart.
When the nissan leaf came out , you knew instantaniously to leaf it alone , well alone , the mitsunishi has the ancient old montero 3.0 motor that never pulled the skin off a rice pudding . The aveo was always something to avoid , my money on that was $500 on a good day .
The 6g72 has made 1600whp before. Documented on UA-cam. They're stout motors, they were just never super high powered from the factory for insurance reasons. They could've easily gave that thing 500 horsepower reliably.
Best car I ever owned was a 95 Stealth. Had it for 16 years before I bought the Camaro. Miss it so much. Brendan has some bad feelings about something more than the car.
Eh, we’re always an overweight pig and not very durable….. but the Fast and Furious line was really stupid as it predates the movie. I don’t think they were terrible but definitely overpriced and over weight.
so when i was a kid, early 2000's, i went from a 91 Z28 to a 96 3000GT, base V6 w 5 speed and the 3000GT blew the doors off the Z, fastest car I ever owned, and it was non turbo. I ended up getting rid of it when my son was born for a family mobile, but i think the one you guys got might have had issues or, because of the 5 speed, the auto is just that much slower, and it was great in teh snow in western pa, it was all around a great car
I worked for an Auto Parts store in college that had yellow Aveo's as their delivery vehicles. They were slow but you could have fun in those little things. Driving it like you stole it, flying over railroad tracks at 50 mph, etc.
Bro really just said that 3000gt is ugly, I respect his opinion but couldn’t be more wrong looks better then some modern day cars
You guys are 😂😂. One hypes up a lemon, the other one says no way. My wife’s nephews wife had a Chevy Aveo when they got married, it wasn’t long before it was traded for a full size car. Back in 1975 we bought a 1972 Chevy Vega GT stick shift, we enjoyed it very much, until in 1976 our first child was born try to get a baby car seat in & out of the backseat was a pain, so we replaced it with four door sedan. The people at the auction was wise to Leaf the Nissan alone. Guys I ❤ these episodes very much & hope that you don’t stop doing them. Keep’m coming
I love the mitsubishi 3000gt always wanted one. Used they get abused so it's hard to find a decent one.
I remember when the 3000 GT 1st came out. The fanfare it got was overwhelming. Now it gets crapped on everywhere. I know it has its problems but I always considered it a kind of unique car.
@IronmanV5 worse decided chrysler ever made was getting into bed with thar crap car company
@@IronmanV5 I do. I didn't really care for it though. Dodge had such a crappy reputation in the nineties, So I kind of stayed away from them.
@@TheMeanmarine13 Main reason I remember it was because of the Bandit TV movies where they used it instead of a Trans AM.
Oh God. This guy... 3000GT is a legend just like almost all 90's japanese sport cars. At least Tommy could more or less see why it is a special car.
My best friend had a Dodge Stealth and even though it was a non turbo FWD one, it was still fun to kick around and I still think these are good looking. They’re heavy and don’t handle well, but it’s a GT car. It’s literally in the name. It’s a great highway cruiser. Also, 220hp wasn’t a slouch in the 90’s. 4.6L Mustang had less HP.
I get excited every time I see a new buy or bust video posted. Thanks guys
These guys don't have the knowledge required to make these videos.... So the people who support/ agree must know even less.
In reference to the gauge cluster comment. The 3000 GT was built from 1990 to 2000, the first F&F movie was released in 2001. If anything, the Stealth/3000 borrowed the gauge styling from the Datsun/Nissan Z cars.
Literally the first person I have ever heard say the 3000GT was ugly.
Love these videos! The format is cool!
I use to really want a 3000gt I miss weird and cool 90’s Japanese cars.
I certainly hope this is a bit scripted because for someone to trash a Mitsubishi 3000 and say a Chevy Aveo is good, I don't trust their judgement at all.
A 1999 3000GT recently sold for over $100K at auction. The values are starting to increase for well preserved examples.
Might be my favorite part of Classics 👍🏻
Fun fact about the Chevrolet Aveo is that in atleast northern Europe of the first gen only the sedan was sold as Aveo and the hatchback was sold as Kalos.
Which older Finnish people pronounced as "kalossi" which means galosh.
Not a 3000 GT owner, but I love them. You are just dead wrong on this one. 😂
The lack of automotive knowledge by the big guy is shocking, actually stunning, but the kid is still doing a good job.
Lmao the way he hates on the 3000gt... and then praises the crappiest jeep liberty he could find for its build quality 💀
I had a 2001 Diamante which I loved driving. A couple things that sucked about it; the rear suspension would sag when you had people sitting in the back seat. Working on the engine was a pain, especially when trying to change spark plugs; replacing suspension bushings meant you had to buy the whole assembly and not just the bushing itself.
Other than that the car was a champ and I got lots of compliments.
I'll never forget in the 90's Autoweek published an internal document from Daewoo for it's "5 part plan" to turn things around in the U.S. market.
The plan consisted of parts
1, 2, 2, 3 and 4.
I own a 2010 Aveo5 MT in silver as my daily driver. I own it for all the reasons Brendan said. He gets it. I also own a couple sports cars, but sometimes you just want a no drama drive to work, and the Aveo is plenty fast in gridlock.😏
And Tommy is right about his complaints. I've owned several econobeaters over the past 20 years to do yeoman's work. This is the worst of them all in materials quality, but I don't buy a hammer based on the quality of the grip finish.
2 years ago I bought a 2007 Aveo sedan with a 5 speed manual and 180,000 miles for $500. Only reason I bought it was to see if a $500 car was still a usable car or if it was only good enough to take to a junk yard after I beat on it on my property. Surprisingly it still ran and drove good and was fun to rev match the shifts. It just wasn't in the best cosmetic condition. I sold it after owning it for a month to a guy who is still drives it to work.
I actually would have bought the Leaf for a few hundred just to drive it for getting to work. (about a 12mile round trip).
You mean the eclipse looks like the 3000GT because it came out a year before the eclipse. These cars were ahead of there time with some of the firsts in the car market. Also this car had just as good of quality as there counterparts. Mocking out a 25 year old car for minor things makes you sound dumb. If it was a couple years old ok but again this is a 25 plus year old car.
Omg. Tommy had me at prehistoric sex toy. Hahaha! Quality content guys. These are great! Keep them coming!
I remember reading a C&D article comparing the 300GT VR4 with the 300ZX since they both had 300HP. The article concluded that while the 300ZX was more expensive, it was by far the better, more refined car.
Love these videos..
Soo fun to watch 🤩
I drove a chevy aveo from Connecticut to Florida and back twice in one year never had a problem. Average over 30mpg and yes it's a cheap car but not that bad overall
The leaf's popularity makes battery replacements/upgrades so much more accessible that I think it's actually a good cheap car.
Yeah I think you can easily DIY the battery in that thing. You might even be able to take the battery apart and replace each individual cell yourself. Watch UA-cam.
We like our 2012 Leaf, even if it looks like a butt suppository (probably end up a classic). Bought used for cheap and got a new battery before warranty expired. It's been a solid car, quiet and plenty of fun up to 30 mph. You guys didn't consider parts, the on-board charger is worth $1,000. What's left of the battery has value as a home energy backup, or refurbishment... I bid $800.
I learned to drive stick in a bright Orange 2005 Aveo. Owned it for 6 years, a ton of miles and never had a single issue with it. Even took it offroad up logging trails. Tommy you have no clue how great these cars were bud!
I’m guessing the shifter is the way it is so that they don’t have to make separate ones for LHD and RHD models. And the car predates F&F.
The Mitsubishi 3000GT is NOT ugly!🤨
I lived in Korea five times. Daewoo’s last car with any charm was the Maepsy, and they discontinued that in 1989.
The 3000GT was not worthy of "hate". The other two cars weren't worthy of notice
The 3000gt is many things. Ugly is not one of them
Bought brand new 05 Aveo for a commuter scooter for $8,900. I am 6'4" and had loads of head and leg room. Had factory air added. Fun car to drive. But as a replacement for the Geo Metro mpg at 35 gallons a little disappointing. Also it did not have antilock brakes as I discovered the hard way as traffic on my commute came to and abrupt stop one day and I was forced onto the shoulder fighting to keep it straight. Build quality wasn't bad for a car at that price point. The safety arguement for it being a bad car is lame because no one who held safety at a high priority could ever reasoably expect it to be safe at that size and price point. Ended up trading it in for another vehicle 2 years later to avoid 2 car payments but I would otherwise have kept it.
My dad owned an Aveo YEARS ago and he actually loved it... until he smacked a deer going 60. Surprisingly enough... after the accident he limped it to his workplace. I recently looked about for an "econobox" and the Aveo was TOTALLY on my list. They aren't GREAT cars by any means... but they're perfectly fine for what they're meant to do.
Thanks, Tommy and Brendan, Auto Auction is a candy store for automotive nerds. Comparison of the Cheap Compacts? Aveo vs original VW Bug or Mini Cooper, Geo Metro/Suzuki Swift, Toyota Tercels, 80s Honda Civics, Subaru Justy, 80s Dodge Colts
"It is mechanically totaled....but at least it's ugly" - I'm dead🤣🤣🤣
Had a 3000gt base model and loved it. Very reliable, manual and great handling. It wasn't the fastest but back then 220hp was quite a bit and the styling, to me has queues from a super car.
A friend of mine got one of these 3000GT's for $500 because it stopped running and he didn't know why, friend bought it and got it running for $200. It was the model right before the VR4 so it had everything the VR4 had except the awd, it was a manual as well.
3000GT VR4 was the car back in the day. Or it's counter the dodge stealth
I enjoy this videos! It's fun to guess what they'll go far.
The Holden version of the Aveo, the Barina Spark is the biggest piece of garbage. Every used one I've seen (usually helping friends buy cars) was trying to blow all the engine seals off. One shot the oil filler cap across the car yard. My Neighbor had one and tried to top the oil up while it was running. The blow-by wouldn't let the oil go in the filler. It's one of the funniest things I've ever seen!
As someone who’s part of the 3000gt owners club, I can confirm that we do not appreciate the hate on our cars lol😝
I actually have a 1993 base model and I’d like to clear something up. The vr4 was the performance trim and was very much a sports car where as the lower trims only had the appearance of a sports car but were more grand touring cars at heart (hence the GT in 3000gt lol). You need to have the right expectations with this car otherwise you’ll be disappointed. If you’re looking for something performance oriented then the vr4 is the one to have as it definitely won’t disappoint. That thing is as quick as my previous supercharged jag that had over 500 hp, for a 90s car that’s insane! The other two trims are for someone like me that doesn’t prefer a manual but loves the looks and nostalgia of the car, and you get a comfortable gt car that you can enjoy cruising around in and it still turns heads.
Your comment about them being ugly is just crazy to me but to each their own🤷🏻♀️ although I will say, the first gen is the best looking imo! Can’t beat pop up headlights😜
P.S. my shifter wiggles too, the bushings are just worn. I mean it’s a 30 year old car, comes with the territory!🤣
I love my 2013 Leaf. It still has 80 miles of range and makes a great commuter car if you live in an area with a mild climate. But I agree it didn’t help the public perception of EVs.
Edit: Don’t buy a 2011 or 2012, those batteries were the worst.
@@waggitnshaggit6592 According to Leafspy, it’s at about 85% original range. Winters here are mild and it gets charged in an enclosed garage, so there’s minimal range loss in winter. Maybe 20% less?
The public got a good perception of Eevee because it was cheap not like what Tesla does to the ev
The only reason someone buys a 3000GT is because they cannot afford any other 90's hero sports car. It has no advantages. It's fat, slow, uncomfortable, feels cheap, and is unreliable. All those cool features you might list, like active aero or 4 wheel steering? None of that works on the car you might find for sale. If it does miraculously work when you go to test drive it, rest assured it will be broken in the next 5,000 miles.
Didn't the Mitsubishi Montero have the same v6 option? The Montero/Pajero/Shogun was also known for being a great offroader around the world.
I doubt it was the exact same engine, but it could have been a different engine with the same displacement. If anything, that 3.0 would be derived from the Galant and Diamanté.
Dude said the EBrake is "Flaccid" 🤣🤣🤣 had me dead
I owned a 1996 3000GT VR4 and loved it. Unfortunately, it developed an electrical issue that I couldn't fix, and one sad day, I eventually had to get rid of it.
Love it when you guys go to auctions... i also feel they get way to much for cars at those places
And this is an auction for dealers only, meaning the end-consumer has to pay even more!
That 3.0L was also used in a lot of Dodge's in the late 80's. Dodge Dynasty for one. Hilarious car to drive.
3:25 The first "The Fast and the Furious" movie came out in 2001. The Mitsubishi 3000GT was sold from 1990 to 2000. So, no, they did not watch any of "The Fast and the Furious" when designing the gauge pod in the 3000GT since the movie had not yet come out back then. I would still be doubtful of the reliability of the 3000GT.
The 3000gt are very powerful car. Thr v6 has the same design engine as the 4g63 with 1 cylinder chopped off and turned into a v design.
Arguing the aesthetics of the 3000gt is irrational ...
.. when the objective argument against that car is that the base model with automatic transmission is a dog to drive.
Like the DeLorean or a Mustang with a 4 cylinder the 3000gt base model combat the incongruity of a visually appearing fast car with a disappointing driver experience.
The base model came with 164hp, SL model with 222hp and the VR-4 had 300hp ... which one is most appealing??
The sister car. the Dodge Stealth, was definitely more polarizing….
Really? I always thought the Dodge name plate ruined that car. It was still a cool car back in the day when I was a teenager but couldn't get past it being a Dodge, With their bad reputations for transmissions in the nineties.
Especially when they had the Bandit TV movies and Bandit drove a Stealth instead of a Trans Am.
When the Aveo was built Daewoo didn't exist as a automaker.
The Aveo was built by GM Korea.
I love the 3000GT VR4. The base one like that I wouldn't buy...
I had a 94 3000gt SL manual in the same red. Official specs on it we're 0-60 in 5.9 seconds from c/d. The car was lightweight and quick for 225 hp. The materials were high quality on the interior for the time. No hard plastics anywhere and the stereo was amazing. The exhaust was insane, with more flex pipe than some supercars of the era. All around a great car that i regretted parting with.
Everyone that i let drive that car thought i had added a turbo because it was so torquey off the line.0
Even the base model from 1991-1996 came with the same V6 as the SL, 220hp. From 1997 until the last year of production, the base came with the crappy V6 160hp comes one in the video has, unlike the V6 in the SL 220.
There’s a bit of a lack of research in the channel…

That was fun! I have read that the Leaf and the BMW i3 have the worst depreciation rates of any cars. If it is true that battery replacement costs are falling then maybe this will turn around but I am sure that the $35000 replacement costs for the Chevy Volt (and the invoice estimate was proof) will continue to scare off people as the electric cars are seen as disposable as cellphones after a decade.
The leaf is terrible because it wasn’t engineered properly. The BMW however is an awesome little EV, it was just priced in the stratosphere when new. The i3 makes a terrific buy if bought cheap now.
@@aussie2uGA I have a friend who bought a used i3 last year and loves it. Interestingly, the dealership keeps trying to buy it back from him.
@@Sprocketboy1956 They dropped hard for a few reasons, the average BMW person wants nothing to do with an “electric city car”. It was a hard sell to that customer base, then add the weird square looks and skinny tires, then add the the high price and nobody was buying it. They languished on lots and you could even lease them in Georgia for $99/month for a year or two with all the incentives staying with BMW. Now that awareness has grown, people realize BMW actually engineered a great car with a lot of good tech and safety into it. The structure is almost all a carbon fiber composite blend and the battery is excellent for longevity. Bravo to those who recognize it’s now a great car at the right price.
The 3KGT is actually pretty cool. It was the only competition for the 300ZX.
Y’all should do one where who ever is closest has to actually buy the car 🤔🤔🤔🤔
The only redeemable feature of the aveo is that the wheels are essentially at the corners. I used to deliver for napa and can attest... If you got bawls this thing will take a turn
1995 3000GT VR4 was amazing made over 300hp and 300 Torque the torque came on low too... handled.... amazing car....
I have a first gen Leaf 24kWh. Rubbish remaining range... 40ish miles. Bought a used 30kWh battery for $2000 which returned it to the original 24kWh range of 80ish miles. I used a system invented by a Leaf guru on youTube, called Dala, that cost less than $20 and then $200 for my local EV shop to do the work. My car is low mileage and 13years old, and now as 'good as new', which might not seem much initially but kind of is a big deal. Leafs are astonishingly reliable mechanically, so cost next to nothing to own either to 'fuel' or maintain. Perfect for town use, as that's where poor modern-day range makes least difference. Buy a good one without damage or shonky electrics, then budget another $2500 to do a battery upgrade if needs be. Then just keep it and use it. Maintenance consists of checking your tyres, topping up the washer-bottle and an annual check over... and that's it.
Great video guys as always!!!! My wife bought a 2012 Sonic with the turbo and stick shift. At the time my wife did a lot of highway driving so the Sonics fuel economy is what sold me on it. It was a fun car to drive but didn't really have any power and the transmission felt pretty crappy after 90,000 miles on it. We retired it for a Equinox with the turbo and it was by far more peppy and nicer to drive. Fuel economy was almost as good as the sonic to. The sonic almost felt like it had a tuning issue like it was running to lean maybe.
Here's my take. The 3000GT was a sexy, cool car for its time. The base model had a 12-valve 3.0L 164hp V6. It was basically just a nice affordable sporty looking car to cruise around in, not a performance car. The 24-valve version had 222hp, which rivaled the Mustang GT. The twin turbo version had 300hp and was a performance monster for the time. You just don't see these cars anymore, so I'd have considered that base model for the right price. A nice highway cruiser, perhaps. As for the Aveo, I had a sedan version as a rental once. It was incredibly roomy inside, decently comfortable for city duty, and felt surprisingly comfortable on the highway. The interior plastics were nasty cheap, even for cheap cars of the early 2000s. The ride was very comfortable, but the handling was comically awful. Lastly, the Leaf. I test drove one. It was comfortable, very roomy, interior quality seemed good, and it was super quiet. It essentially felt like a nice midsize car. The problem had always been the stupidly short battery range, the battery degradation, and the cost to replace. Major bucks. Imagine living with an ICE car that can only hold 75 miles worth of gas, takes hours to refill the tank, loses that range the longer you drive the car, and requires the entire powertrain replaced every 100k miles for half the price of another new car. What a racket!
Nissan Leaf, there is now quite a market for the early ones and replacing the battery with a newer and more powerful unit, giving a 150 mile range. Without the update though, its spares.
Anybody remember the Daewoo ad campaign that played off the fact that nobody in North America knew who they were?
"Dae who? Daewoo!"
Honestly, the AWD twin turbo version of the 3000GT is a maintenance nightmare. If you buy the naturally aspirated FWD car, it really isn't too bad. The FWD cars are probably less likely to be trashed or modded, too.
Being a facelift id agree but those early ones with the pop ups... 🥵 the last 2 years had another much better looking facelift too ❤️
