A near perfect film doing exactly what it sets out to do. And the characters are not "horror movie stupid" most of the time but make smart decisions and are actually trying to survie. A true classic and definitely a personal favourite with a great cast.
I'd argue that it IS a perfect film, or at least as a script. I'd put it in the same vault as BACK TO THE FUTURE.

Tremors deserves to be in a comedy/horror hall of fame alongside GHOSTBUSTERS, ARMY OF DARKNESS, and BIG TROUBLE IN LITTLE CHINA.
As an actor, Michael Gross playing Burt was brilliant. When he is handed back the unloaded gun, he knows it is unloaded and he still safety checks to see that it is unloaded. The movie is remarkable in nuance. Also, when Earl falls out of the truck in the beginning, that's foreshadowing of the Worm out of the cliff.

I guarantee you that he was instructed to do that, since he hates guns and knows little to nothing about them.

This was such an under the radar movie for the longest time. Then it started getting play on cable and the internet has raised the awareness of it. It was better than it deserved to be.
I probably watched this movie, plus the first two sequels, about 2 dozen times a piece on SyFy (when it was the Sci Fi Network), and the first one in particular is just sooo damn good
Not true, this was a big hit at the time. That why Tremors 2 came out soon after but Kevin Bacon said no, Fred Ward and Michael Gross jumped at the chance to do 2, Reba said if Michael is in it, Hell no. Hello gave her a very hard time on Tremors seeing it was her first film and never wanted to work with him again.
After 2 it died down, then 3 brought the original characters back except the leads, they screwed up their own lore, and it took Tremors the TV show to make #4, and the rest is history.
Tremors 2 came out 6 years later and straight to video. Tremors was only an immediate success once it was released on tape.@@Smileybeeblevrox

Box office numbers cover movie tickets not movie rentals and purchases. That’s a characteristic of the cult film.
This is great movie, it homage to 50s b-movies. The script is tight, the characters are likeable and you really are rooting for the people to survive. The characters act in a way that feels believable. Kevin Bacon and Fred Ward have great chemistry together. Great reaction

The pan shot reveal to the wall of guns is a thing of cinematic legend. Brilliant script and pitch perfect execution by all involved, such a great fun movie, love it. Criminal it didn't do better on first release. I believe Victor Wong had Bell's palsy which is why he had the squint, like Michael Berryman his unusual looks are what made his film career.

If you like little trivia bits, you might be amused to know that Burt (played by Michael Gross) played a pseudo-hippy father in the 80s hit show, Family Ties. The literal day after they wrapped the final episode of Family Ties, he started on the Tremors project because he was anxious to not be type-cast in roles only like his role on the show lol. There are 7 movies and 13 episodes of a TV show that's set just after the third movie. So, if you want to binge the franchise with friends, the watch order is 1-3, TV Show, 4-7. Whatever you do, don't play the drinking game if you try to binge the entire franchise in one night or something... new livers are so expensive on the black market 😛
Yep. Burt Gummer was a little different than Stephen Keaton.
And he was the dad in Cool as Ice. One of the greatest examples of cinema in our time!
4 is a prequel, though, and doesn't relate back to any of the others except that it also has Michael Gross in it. I'm fairly sure you can just watch it whenever.
It was actually immersion breaking for him to play Burt. He overdid it which helped and absolutely necessary.
I love the first film as fun but the rest of the franchise is a little weak. I would not recommend unless the first really struck a cord with you.
@jack_m100 I kind of like the fourth one for the back story. It has a unique perspective because the viewers know about the underground monsters, but the residents don't.

Bacon is actually an inner city Philadelphia kid. That's just how good of an actor he is. He plays country so well.
This was a career renaissance to an extent for both Ward and Bacon. Ward broke out in the “Right Stuff” in 1983, then was cast to star in a planned series of “Remo Williams” movies, but the first one flopped, and his career generally sputtered until “Tremors,” which led to more high-profile work in the ‘90s. Bacon broke out BIG in “Footloose” in ’84, then his career sputtered until “Tremors.” After that, he scored several big roles in hit movies in the ‘90s.
And I always liked Remo, to bad it didn't catch on, had Big Trouble in Little China vibes and Ward is always so likable. Try out Miami Blues with Alec Baldwini also for a good little movie he does a fine job in.

Possibly my favorite Kevin Bacon movie is "Quicksilver".

The character of Burt Gummer was played by Micheal Gross, who also played the dad on Family Ties. It's funny that you thought that he was slated to be killed off because he is the only actor to appear in all of the sequels and even the prequel. And he starred in the TV series. In 2017 they were talking about rebooting the series with Kevin Bacon, but they decided not to do the reboot.
Maybe they realized the same thing the graboids did: Don't mess with Perfection.
They filmed the 1st ep for syfy. But then the channel passed on it. But now..burt is dead and the franchise is over unfortunately.
One of my favorite giant monster movies as a kid! And it still is!
I remember watching this on the Navajo Nation on NBC back in the early 90's.
The idea of the movie came from Brent Maddock and SS Wilson, both of them were in the Navy. They were sitting on a large boulder in a Nevada Test Site, taking notes and one of them said, " What if there was something under the ground that would never let us off this rock?" And thus, TREMORS was born.
I first saw this movie as a teenager, late night courtesy of the BBC, and I've loved it ever since.
Three things I want to bring up if Shanelle reads this:
1) If you didn't spot it (might be in the full reaction), Mindy the pogo stick girl was played by Ariana Richards, who a few years later had a much higher-profile monster movie role as Lex in Jurassic Park.
2) If you love a good movie explosion, you've got to see Tremors 2, it has the most realistic-looking movie explosion I've ever seen.
3) Burt the "crazy survivalist" has the greatest moment of gun handling I've ever seen in a movie. When he takes the revolver back from Melvin, a gun he knows wasn't loaded when he gave it to Melvin, who he was sure wasn't carrying ammunition of any kind, let alone the right kind, and which Melvin is yelling at him about because it's not loaded, he still instinctively flips open the cylinder to check if it's loaded. It's done in such a casual way that it's got to be instinctive for the character and shows that he's not just a crazy gun nut, he really knows how to handle a firearm properly.
Burt could teach Alec Baldwin a thing or two.

3:12 I love how they foreshadow the ending of the movie right at the beginning. Kevin Bacon's character causing Earl to fall out of the truck, kind of looking like a "Graboid" in his sleeping bag, by scaring him. "Stampede!"
Reba and Michael shooting the piss out of the monster in the basement is the best scene in movie history.

"Consider it stepped on!" is still one of my most favorite movie lines ever.
I always loved this movie because it dared to imagine how people would REALLY act, when faced with scary, unknown monsters.
I can't believe you wanted Burt Freakin' Gummer to die. He's the best character in the film.

This fits firmly in the category of movies that, if it's on TV, you'll watch it again, even if it's the 876th time... feels as warm as it looks, a nice easy, fun watch that always makes you feel better
Light, yet sharply written humorous comedy with great characters
Lost your fear and learned to appreciate the humor of these movies early.
When my sister and niece watched Jurassic Park my neice was cheering for the dinosaurs. We knew she was one of the family then.
Screenwriter S.S. Wilson's UA-cam channel "Real Deal Productions" Is a gold mine of behind the scenes footage, and commentary on the making of Tremors. He's still actively uploading as of this past week.
Can't wait to watch this. Anyone who goes into Tremors with low expectations will be pleasantly surprised. Great performances all around, pacing, amazing practical effects, and humor that still make me laugh even after seeing it 100 times for the past 30 years... I just love everything about this movie!
In the words of RLM, this is a perfect movie. Perfect script, perfect suspense, perfect practical effects, etc.
Tremors is one of the best monster movies ever. There's a lot of good scenes in this but the best ones in my opinion are: when the towns residents are outside the store and the scene goes to a wide shot (especially with the harmonica playing) after they realize there could be more creatures and the other scenes are when we see the giant worms moving under ground through the dirt. Also the little girl playing Mindy in this was the same young girl from jurassic Park.
Great selection. The sequels are pretty good, too. I first saw this film on VHS tape back in the early 1990's. Great memories of this one. Kevin Bacon gave another brilliant performance.
For a campy jaws on land monster movie it has more charm it deserves. Good scares, great sound design and each character has just enough depth. Perfection one could say. Kevin Bacon thought this was the low point of his career, but its legacy eventually changed his mind about it

That should be the tag line for the movie: "Tremors: Better Than It Aught To Be!"
I saw the theatrical release and watched it a ton on cable TV back in the day. I think also some distant relative sent me a DVD copy for Christmas; which is still in my collection.
I see this as a love letter to monster movies of the 50's and 60's. It is camp, switch you brain off fun. I wish more movies were like this.

It also borrows some of the best tricks "Jaws" used, including the creature POV shots and the severed head jumpscare.

The first three movies tell the 'whole' story of the creatures with the 4th being more of a prequel and a way to kind of relive the first one in a different era. The rest kinda take the concept of Graboids and just run with them. Burt does appear in all of them. Most of the cast (who survived in the movies) appear between the first three with the exception of Kevin and Reba - who sadly never came back to reprise their roles. And as much as we all *love* Melvin - Burt does get a smidge of justice in the 3rd one....lol
That drilling and blasting joke went over my head for literally 30 years!
You can’t watch Tremors without watching Tremors 2, it’s just as good 👍
Tremors is kinda of a throw-back horror/comedy suspense movie in style, but it is a fun film. And you can tell the actors had a lot of fun making it.

Fred Ward as Earl Bassett (RiP) was my favorite character in this film. His role in Remo Williams as the titular character was severely underrated. Recommend you check it out.
This movie fueled so many of my childhood "floor is lava" type games lol my cousins and I use to throw pillows down as residual boulders and hop from one to another and if you fell you become the lava monster!! Thanks for the review!
One of my favorites! A bit silly, a bit serious, a lot in-between.This movie has legit "monsters", relatable characters, and plausible situations/solutions with a few grains of salt. Thanks, Shan, for another one that i remember from the theaters (jeez, I'm getting old!). And speaking of Victor Wong, how about Big Trouble in Little China?

It's in my top ten movies of all time. Super sharp script, great cast with a ton of chemistry, highly creative special effects and camerawork, amazing score, gripping action sequences... it has it all. I saw it on VHS as a teenager and its so rewatchable, I've lost count lol.
This movie made me fall in love with Reba! Damn, that little girl will be attacked by dinosaurs in 3 years. This guy wasn't in Gremlins, he was in Big Trouble in Little China. Gremlins guy is Keye Luke, who was a regular in 1970s Kung Fu.
I actually saw Tremors in theater, the 3rd day after it was released. It was immediately added to my all-time favorites list of horror/sci-fi flicks and I've rewatched it at least 30 times since then! Love it!!
I love this movie. The pogo stick girl is the hacker girl from Jurassic Park. Burt is played by Michael Gross who played the father in the family sitcom Family Ties which starred Michael J Fox.
As often as she was mentioning Jurassic Park I was just waiting for her to recognize the actress.
"Tremors": The B- movie that rose to A-level with a mix of Humor, Horror and Romance. Kevin Bacon was at a low point in his career as said, "Yeah, I made 'Tre,mors." These days, he says "Hell Yeah I made 'Tremors!";) 28:50 My favorite monster movie is..."Alien" (1979)! Still scary to new viewers after over FORTY years.;) "Tremors" was a TBS/TNT discovery.

The beginning scene of Kevin Bacon scaring Burt out of the truck in his brown sleeping bag foreshadows the ending death of the monster falling out of the cliff.
There are 7 movies. Earl and Burt are the only ones to appear in the second movie but then after the second movie, this became Burt's franchise as Burt (Michael Gross) is the only cast member to appear in all 7 movies and a short lived TV series.
So many setups and payoffs, just the right amount of characterization for the cast, nearly a perfect script and great audio design. They knew exactly what they were making and executed the game plan with gusto.
Some annoying snobby cinema folks trash this as cheapo Jaws-but-on-land schlock, but I think this film is just plain awesome and so much fun.

An absolutely amazing movie, with damn near perfect pacing. constant set-ups/ payoffs, and just overall FUN!

When actor Fred Ward says "At least he can't climb", it reminded me of another movie he stars in, "Remo Williams: The Adventure Begins", which had a small scene of him being chased by dogs. Do not want to spoil it here though, that movie is worth watching for some great characters.

the greatest b movie of all time. i rewatched this every year with my pops since I was a kid (early 90s) up until he passed in 2020.
Since you have to know: no, I saw it in '91 or '92 on cable (like, DUH!) It was so much fun! Re-watched it every chance I got. This is why I had been requesting it for such a long time. Thanks for finally checking it out. Did not disappoint! 😊

in re: Being afraid of movies .....
Some years ago, the animated film "Monster House" came out. I took my 3 children to see it, with their ages being 11, 9, and 7 at the time. There's a bunch of set up, but eventually the main characters enter in to the titular Monster House. My 9-yr old started keeing a little becuz he was so scare. My 7-yr old rolled her eyes and announced (loudly enough to be heard in every corner of the theater) "C'mon Travis! You know they're not gonna die... they're the main characters!"
The entire room (nearly full crowd) busted out in to laughter, and I don't think any child in the place was scared at all through out the rest of the movie....
I love how the movie turns from a horror movie to a survival movie somewhere two thirds in. It's a subtle shift of genre but this is no "last girl" horror movie, these people actually get their shit together, cooperate, and come up with workable plans. It helps that the monsters actually are bound by (semi) realistically biological and physical rules and are not magical murder dolls or something.
You know how they say that sometimes, the second movie is better than the first? Tremors is an exception to that. The first is significantly the best. Both Kevin Bacon and Reba McEntire have some of the best sarcastic comebacks in this whole movie.
Mom rented this on VHS. Its such a beloved movie imo. Its simple with a stellar cast.

This wasn't made for tv, it actually had a cinematic release...and tanked hard. Then it started doing well on VHS rentals, enough to warrant a sequel in 1996 and spawning a total of 7 films in the franchise, as well as a 13 episode series and an unaired pilot for a Kevin Bacon lead series a few years ago.
This movie has the perfect mix of hyper drama, stinky foot cheese and gooey monsters.
I saw this at the theater in 1990 with a good friend and had a great time!
Just watched this last night with the family. My 9 and 11 year old kids enjoyed the balance of mild horror and comedy.
One of the weird funny lines in this movie that I love is when Val and Earl are getting on the horses, Walter comes up and hands them "Swiss cheese and bullets".
Reba was a barrel racer here in Oklahoma before she was famous. Married to an abusive husband. Divorced shortly after her first hit. Song hit. 🤷♀️
Great movie. I usually don't like horror movies but this is the exception. You should also see Stir of Echos 1999 a sci fi horror also with Kevin Bacon Also a great Fred Ward movie is Remo Willams the adventure begins. I love the scene with the monster that attack the gun crazy couple it cracks me up :) . You got in into the wrong rec room :) . Fyi about the crazy gun couple. The woman is Reba a famous country singer and the guy was famous as the hippie dad (What a 180 :) ) on the popular 80's show Family Ties with Micheal J Fox (Marty from Back To The Future). Also the ending was change because the test audience wanted to be a kiss.
It wasn't a made-for-TV movie, but it fits so well in that niche it did _exceptionally_ well on TV. To the point that I almost instinctively connect it with the TNT cable network.
This was actually Reba's first ever acting job.

First time I saw "Tremors", I remember my dad renting the film from "Blockbuster" on VHS back in the early 90's.
The first 2, maybe 3, of these movies are great. Also, kudos for the Alanis Morissette reference. And, as always, great reaction.

@Shanelle Riccio - I have the perfect Memorial Day film for you…and it actually stars Kevin Bacon ~ “Taking Chance” a superb film and it’s only about 88 mins. There is no blood/gore…and it is an extremely moving film. I think you’ll love it…and be impressed by what the filmmakers achieved.
I had been my annual Memorial Day viewing tradition for about 6 years now.
2nd Best… “Gardens of Stone” which is an older film but will blow your mind when you watch it and see all the cast of it!
This movie at the time wasnt low budget, this was basically a major motion picture type thing back in the day (not "made for tv" type movie). I still remember seeing the commercial for it on tv back in '90. (Scared the crap out of kid me 😂)
There was a billboard of it for weeks on my way to school. But I only saw it on tv.
A reactor who knows film, discussing oners, crane shots, exposition, animatronics, and plot devices rather than just, "That's cool" AND who plays guitar? Win.
I love this movie. I've rewatched it countless times, including every reaction youtube channels have ever featured it. I was born within the same year this hit vhs, and I can't remember the first time I watched it, because I was so young. In 1998 my little mom and pop vhs rental store, gifted it to me when my dad passed, because we rented it so many times together, or even separately, if just my mom took me.
I was in college and saw Tremors at the theater. I thought it was fantastic. It was out of the theater by the end of the week. I had always wished they would have gotten the original cast back together for a finale. I had an idea for a screenplay called "Tremors: Grabageddon" and would take place in Perfection. Fred Ward past away so that idea can no longer happen.
If you like *Tremors,* you should watch *Arachnophobia.* Has a very similar feel imo, but scarier because spiders are real, unlike giant worms.
