Repairmen Val McKee (Kevin Bacon) and Earl Bassett (Fred Ward) are tired of their dull lives in the small desert town of Perfection, Nev. But just as the two try to skip town, they happen upon a series of mysterious deaths and a concerned seismologist (Finn Carter) studying unnatural readings below the ground. With the help of an eccentric couple (Reba McEntire, Michael Gross), the group fights for survival against giant, worm-like monsters hungry for human flesh.

18:40 That's the great thing about this movie that makes it one of the best monster films. The characters actually make logical and smart decision for the majority of the film. There are one or two exceptions, which can be handwaved by panicked reasoning (the guy getting on the tire), but they all usually go with the best choice with the information they have. It's so refreshing to see. Even when the Gummer's refuse to abandon the basement, it's completely understandable and in character for them to do that. Something moving underground like that is nothing that they'd ever been aware of or experienced, so it makes sense that they'd ignore the information because the information doesn't make sense to them. But once they see first hand what the creatures are and what they can do, they immediately take it in stride and adjust accordingly.

    Love this movie!!
I grew up watching this movie on the Navajo Nation.
The idea for the movie came from Brent Maddock and SS Wilson, both of them were in the Navy. They were taking notes on a large rock in a Nevada Nuclear Test Site and one of them said, "What if there was something under the ground tht would never let us off this rock?" Amd thus TREMORS was born.

'Visceral' is the perfect word for the quality of good puppetry, costumes, miniatures, etc. It's the same charm the old Godzilla movies had: you knew the monster was a stunt performer in a rubber suit, but they had a certain gravity to them that CGI monsters lack. And in 'Tremors,' in addition to the great effects, we had the unprecedented chemistry between Fred Ward and Kevin Bacon; they play perfect bro-buddies who've probably been friends all their lives.

In real life, Kevin Bacon did pole vaulting in high school or college. I head cannon that Rhonda had a track and field scholarship. A deleted scene says Marvins parents spend most of their time gambling in Vegas. He acts up because he gets ignored if he doesn't.

Definitley I'd recommend reacting to the sequel Tremors 2: Aftershocks after this. While it doesn't have Kevin Bacon, it does have Fred Ward returning as Earl Bassett, who's been hired to deal with a Graboid infestation at a Mexican oilfield. Plus, it has Michael Gross return as Burt Gummer, which makes Burt more of a main character. It helps to cement Burt Gummer as one of the legendary horror heroes and sets Burt up as the main character for the sequels after Tremors 2. It's a lot of fun and highly recommended.

These movies are a more of an "action/comedy with monsters" type than horror, etc. They're intentionally campy, and it's part of what makes them fun.
No CGI in the first Tremors movie. Very little if any in the second one. They used some sparingly in 3 and 4, and got more into it with 5-7. They did it all practical whenever they could, though. Some was large hydraulic and maquette puppet stuff, close up of the tongues was actually a hand puppet on a guy's arm. A few things done with miniatures. You can actually find a lot of stuff on the "Making Of" for the various Tremors movies.

I know this tends to be seen as a campy B-movie-style monster movie, but it's a genuinely pretty solid movie. The characters are likable and smart enough for the situation, it does a great job making the monsters a bigger and bigger threat in a logical progression by having them learn, the monsters look good, the fact that they're underground makes it easy to use the models sparingly, the practical effects work, there's actual setup and payoff, and it's just a lot of fun throughout

A couple of fun facts about this movie: they were supposed to film the car being pulled under completely but the day before they shot that scene the rig broke which is why the switched to just the headlights going out in the night sky.
Second fun fact the scene of going though the dirt was made by having a camera pointed straight up looking through a tube then they just poured dirt down the tube.

    3. Burt
    4. Heather
    5. Walter Chang
    6. The doctor
    7. The doctor's wife
    8. Nancy (Mindy's Mom)
    9. Mindy
    10. Nestor
    11. Melvin
    12. Miguel
    13. Fred
    14. Edgar
There are seven movies in the series, and all the rest went straight to video. I'd say that the first four are the best and then the quality kind of went downhill for the last three. Coincidentally, that's also when they stopped using practical effects (mostly) and went to all CGI.
There was a one-season TV show on the Sci-Fi channel that had all sorts of other creatures turning up. It was even more silly than the movies and they aired the episodes out of order.
in 2018 Kevin Bacon filmed a pilot for a new Tremors TV show, however they not only passed on the show, the pilot has never been aired. There's a teaser for it on UA-cam and it looks like it was finished, but there's not much information on the net about it. Some say it was completed and some say it was never finished.

(Edit) Apologies - 6 follow up movies.

Oh, and there is also a TV show that picks up after the 3rd movie. It's a 90's low budget TV show, so the effects suffer a fair bit but by the 2nd or 3rd ep it gets to be a lot of fun. Sadly there was only one season.

I love Tremors, it's one of my favourite films overall. The monsters are dangerous without being unstoppable, and there isn't just one cheap trick to defeating them. The people are pretty clever once they figure out the rules, and aside from Melvin they're likeable. The sequels are great too, definitely worth watching too, and even the TV series is fun, even if it's a bit wackier than the films.
